I weathered my mojave this weekend. Dust, grass and a couple High speed cart wheels. But nice work paintin, looks realistic.

Going over everything with super thin coats of white first is a great way to fade the paint.
Looks great. Busy customizing mine. Glad I made my own inner fenders. Bought sliders and needed to do significant mods to make them fit. No issues with the ARB winch bumper. Looks like I need an airbrush.

Weathered up my HG P408, just got finally done with it. I use Rustoleum and Krylon Fusion camouflage paint. Also use Rustall weathering kit. Finalize everything with a matte clear coat, which is also great for "dirting" up the glass.
On my first weathering job and I think I overdid it on the salt method for that deep rust effect. I used rattle cans for all the details then used the Vallejo wash for added details.

I'm going to try this on my 1/18 D90, just need to wait for the rest of the parts to come in. I have already done the flat coat, that really toned down the paint a lot. It was just too shiny.

Very nice work, brings the model to life, looks much better. I weather all my other models, but my hard body D90, in metallic gunmetal? Still not sure. One can use weathering powders from MIG et al but make sure that they are sealed - and be aware, the powders can change colour when sealing them. Also one can rust bolt heads, add corrosion to the Birmabright alloy panels (Land Rover Series 1-3 iirc) and worse on certain later Defenders, including heavy rusting to the rear cross member. Lots of fun.
I've driven myself mad trying to order parts too, my buddy has gone even further. The issue is which parts fit and which parts work together - as you demonstrate.
I like how subtle it looks.
I'm like to keep my trucks clean like I would my 1:1 Landy 110... then drive the weathering on to them. I spray everything with that in mind so a good thick grey base under paint let's the scratches show well. The only thing I am working on now is TPU printed fender flares for my 1:10 Camel Truck so that the scratches stay black....
With my 78 chevy k10 stepside I painted the inside a rust color that I mixed myself then painted the outside blue so when the blue paint scratches off it looks like rust. Worked out well

I really like what you’ve done with it! I think it looks great! I’m building mine to look like the original hue166 version 90 two doors with the complete roof, I have already spent almost a $1,000 to make it look just like the original heritage hue166 edition and that’s without electronics and radio! Just the parts that I have purchased so far! But I hope once finished it will look like the 1/1 scale version. Grasmere green. Ohh I also got the grasmere green wheels to match! 👌😎👍nice job!

Nice video. Really need to use my airbrush more. Btw the k10 in the background is one of my favorites but really needs a least one flat tire while sitting there.
I'm running 4.19 tires trimmed the fenders and used the lower shock hoop hole. No rub. Put an axial ae5 and 35t motor with head tail lights. Xtra speed rock sliders. I'm thinking about xvd shafts and metal drive shafts. Also bummer replacement a d inner fenders

I personally love weathering my trucks. I just finished my demon sg4c and it turned out great in my opinion. I just got a rc4wd blazer and I'm trying to figure out what to do with it. Its a beautiful truck and my other one is done up military style, but I do love the blue that the body came in. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated 🙏 🙂

What's your input on the xvd front shafts is it needed on the newer ones. I know from forums it seems the cup could break and take out the axle housing.
I haven’t tried weathering yet, but I have an idea for Josh’s all-time favorite Ford truck that would require quite a bit of weathering.
Can you do the same thing with the wheels? And is better to do them first before installing them?
Did you sand the body to eliminate the shine, or did you sprayed it with matte clear?
Do you typically paint your bodies with airbrush? or just use it for weathering and trim? I've learned a ton from your vids. Thank you!
Generally I paint with aerosol cans for full bodies. I find it difficult to get the coverage I want with an airbrush.

I mention in the video, it's a Paasche Talon. Also, I use Vallejo Model Air paints.
Do you weather prior to spraying your clear coat? Or after? I know you said to add in the weathering to the body lines after the clear is sprayed- but but about when you just go at it with the air brush?

Awesome video!!! I just did my first weathering on my Marlin Crawler with the Sophisticated Paint! Where do you get your vallejo paints from?
There's a static model shop near me that carries the entire line.
Hey Matt did you dilute your vallejo air before applying them? What is your compressor psi pressure?
No dilution required with the Model Air line of paint! I run around 35 psi if I recall.
Question: I have a lexan body with a Freqeskinz wrap. Should I use lexan airbrush paints over the top of the wrap or just regular acrylics from Vallejo?
If the paint isn't going on lexan don't use it. Wraps are a sticker but should accept Vallejo.
What type of air brush setup do you utilize. I’m considering purchasing one myself but I’m a little unsure about the necessary equipment.

Your going to have to upgrade to an airless sprayer that are used for fences and decks. :)
Matt: So I added weathering to my tiny truck and I finished it up with a wash to make the details really pop.

I think you should make a new windshield bar from metal.
i wish the autobiography version RTR wasn't in that deep red/gloss black color... just doesn't look right. may have to get the older green version if it's still available, hopefully for next year's project.

What you call an air filter is actually a snow cowl to prevent snow entering the heater duct. Could you not cut the grill to fit the bumper closer like I did on my real one.

Rc4wd Tango Down wheels are my favorite for a Defender, but they are beadlock now not glue-on as you've mentioned. Back in the day when first-gen Gelande was around, Tango Down wheels were glue-on, maybe you have an ancient wheel on that truck? Man you're gettin' old! =)

I over weathered my truck on accident, any way to tone it down. Mostly went to heavy on the wash
You can try a little acrylic thinner on a rag, light strokes. Not too heavy, it'll eat through the bottom layers.

Mint? Not sure, it’s the color it comes in from RC4WD.
When i get the body for my crawler build im going to paint it on the outside and then paint it like a light grey metal looking colour on the inside so when I scratch the paint it looks like a real car getting the paint scratched off.
Provided it's Lexan, that will work really well!

From what I've seen IRL and online, these techniques are far beyond most RC enthusiasts. Maybe it's lack of interest, maybe it's a lack of polysyllabic comprehension. :-) Either way, wild that we have some genuine artists sharing freely their expertise, and then there's Josh.

Couldn't agree more with your closing statement about making your rig your own, with some simple weathering. I learned my tricks years ago from model railroaders, who are tops at this, particularly the one about spraying road grime from below. If TH-cam allowed photos I would post, so pardon this link to a video of my own Rover to illustrate how much you and I are on the same page. This vehicle is fresh from the paint booth. I tend to use the natural weathering method.
We all have our methods!
The rubber black on the fender arches is excellent, makes it look 100% more realistic straight away!
If you are concerned about the approach angle with the bumper, consider that this body shell is modelled on the later version of the Defender which had a deeper grille housing for when the vehicle was fitted with air-conditioning... You could always trim the grille around and recess the winch back into it (which is what you see on a number of 1:1 Defenders, particularly when a Warn 8274 winch is fitted). I would also consider mounting the two rectangular spot-lights the other way up, below the hoop of the bull-bar - they would be better protected that way.

HA! I can't recommend a compressor, I bought my last one five or six years ago, but I really like my Iwata!
RC4WD is too pricey for most.
How do you figure? There are trucks from Traxxas and Axial that around the same price.
