This video is so on time, I was just telling my husband yesterday that I didn't want to put mums in the new garden, but you have made a great case for the MUMS! Repelling ticks, making a wonderful cut flower, getting 3 bloom cycles, and being able to divide them. Whew girl you SAVED the MUMS in my garden. Thank you for sharing and your hair looks great and so does the smile.

Amazing! I learned so much about mums from you today. Thanks for sharing with us. I'll be adding more of them to my garden along with my endless supply of zinnias. Your hair looks beautiful today. I think I identify more with your other gardening " hot mess look." I pretty much look like a trainwreck when I garden, as well. After all, it's all about how the gardens look, not us. Enjoy your cooler weather because summer is on it's way back for us zone 8b and 9 Texans.

I do enjoy this video. I have watched it again to brush up on my mum facts. I try to get at least two bloom cycles per year. I'm not wasting time pinching off buds.
You looked very nice in this video. I garden in southeastern NC, zone 8a. The heat and humidity are super high during the summer. I come in drenched in sweat, and I am the poster girl for a HOT mess!
Humidity is the worst!
I use all of my blooms for tea and sometimes as garnish in cooking! I love that they are all edible, it’s literally a all around amazing plant 😻

Once again I'm going to mention my daughter's garden in comparison to yours, bcuz she lives in Rockwall, which is just a hop, skip, and a jump away from you.
So y'all have the same soil. These past few years she and I have been trying out different plants in her front garden just to see what works. I think I may have previously talked about how the plant Cat's Pajamas just never liked her garden, which was surprising.
However-
Low and behold, the MUMS are a shining star at her house too!!
We couldn't be happier to have them flourishing in that calichè clay y'all garden with!!
Hers have given her multiple bloom cycles too, with hardly any care, just a few times of deadheading, and VOILA!!

Here in zone 5 some mums work (for few years) too but I must plant them in the spring to let them establish themselves before winter.
+Not Always Lurking yeah, zone 5 winters are much harsher than what I deal with in zone 8a
Mums were one of my very first plants I bought when I started gardening. I had no idea what I was doing so I was pretty sad when I didn’t care for them as I should and they died before the fall season was over. I didn’t give up though. This is my second year and I am happy to say that with a little bit of research I have successfully maintained all 6 of my mums this year. I’m in zone 9b where the beginning of fall is still hot in the high 90°’s so I made sure to water them everyday so they wouldn’t wilt and die on me. Thank you for encouraging us beginning gardener’s. We truly appreciate you putting out this information for us.

I had been plucking buds all summer bc I was led to believe if I didn't I wouldn't have flowers in fall. They looked leggy and awful then a spell of rain three days long killed them. I have clay soil too and am in zone 7b. I'm going to follow your advice from now on!

Just saw this video. It is now April 2022. You look fine without make up. I garden the same way. I am surprised you are an 8a. I live in Oregon and I'm an 8b. I really don't know how they figure it out. You have given me a different perspective on mums. I thank you for that.

Your hair looked really pretty. I garden in zone 8a also, coastal southeastern NC. When l am work in my yard, it is HOT and I am a MESS. I am usually filthy, but the flowers do not care that l’m dirty and my hair is sticking out every which way.

I love how showy my ground planted mums look. I have had the same red mums for 4 years. I just planted some pink mums to fill a hole in my flower bed. I planted yellow mums from 50cent clearance and they are huge and beautiful yellow in my purple yellow and pink garden. Girl I miss my Texas flowers. Living in Ky now. BUT I did find a Mexican Bush sage plant and so far its doing great. I miss the Texas Sage Shrubs I had, and my Sweet Olive Shrubs and Oleanders.

Love mums and I will be planting those I bought for fall decorations out into my garden. I also noticed that the flowers I chose at Trader Joe’s today were mums. Love making bouquets with mums. So many different colors and shapes of the blooms. Thanks for sharing this information.

I Just started doing a whole lot of container planting Last year when we bought our home and II have containers that I plant in the Spring, containers that I plant in the summer, and containers i plant in the fall. One reason for this is because sometimes the summer containers are still looking good and I don't wanna pull them out yet, to plant things for fall and then have a few weeks of not a lot of xolor while the fall ones are bulking up, another reason is so that in the fall, my fault containers can stay on my porch looking good and I can go ahead & plant bulbs for early spring color in another set of containers, issued of having to pull the pants early or have to be put in the freezing cold planting bulbs! 😄 But all that to say planted mums for the 1st time last year and left them in the containers all Winter and noticed in the Spring that they were starting to flush out with fresh growth So I just left them in the containers beside my garage and I didn't have to buy that many plants for my fall containers this year!

How do you know if they're hardy mums? I heard you say, maybe earlier this year about your mums blooming more than once, so I let mine grow without cutting them back but they didn't start blooming until August.(I'm in zone 7, Maryland)
That's fine but curious if that means they aren't "hardy mums."
The other mums I have I transplanted so I deliberately cut them back and they're blooming now.
I have to say this was a heartwarming and laugh out loud video towards the end. Your openness and enthusiasm about your hair, and getting out of quarantine, enjoying be outside and "hiding out" from your family, and normal things like the mailman driving by, I just loved it.

+Janice Tanner I have yet to figure out how to tell if it is a hardy mum that will survive the winter … mums seem to be rarely labeled at nurseries! If yours made it through the winter, then they are hardy mums. Thanks for the sweet words ❤️❤️❤️ I definitely like to be as real as I can on video!

I watched this video again, and I learned additional things. I am thinking where I can plant several colors that could be year round, like red & white. I’m still going for pink as well. I’ll watch this video additional times because we are in the same growing zone. Our summer temps don’t get as hot as yours. I’m in southeastern NC.

One year ago I planted a mum in the corner of our house the plant grew is tall as a bush! My question have you ever seen one that tall and lanky?

Thanks for disclosing that you don't garden in full regalia. I also become a hot mess in 8b Austin, TX, and I hate having moisturizer, sunscreen, or anything else like sweat flow into my eyes when I garden. Laura from GA gardens in low humidity so her hair remains fresh and bouncy. Not mine. My clothes are strictly segregated from anything that looks respectable because dirt seems magnetically attracted to me and everything I am wearing. I end up looking like a kid who has been playing in the mud, and I am happy.

I'm down in Houston in zone 9. I want to plant chrysanthemums by seed. Are they best down in spring or fall? How do they handle our blazing hot summers here in TX?
+Shekhynah Curtis I haven’t grown them seed before … they do beat when started from cuttings or starts. I recently ordered several chrysanthemum plants from Bluestone Perennials. They handle our summers pretty well but I would consider giving them a little shade in the afternoons.
