One of the best fix it videos I've seen. Followed your step by step video and replaced my son's Cat with ease. Just passed emissions yesterday. Thanks from AZ
Watched this video as I was removing the cat from my lancer. Took me 5 hours to remove and put back on due to not having wd40 but I got the job done. Thanks.
Thanks for the video. If this helps anyone you don't have to completely remove the the power steering pump. Just the two front facing bolts. You can then pull it out enough to slip a socket on that one pita bolt.
Had a P0421 & just replaced my catalytic converter. Thanks for such an informative video! Fingers crossed that the CEL doesn't come back on, the initial o2 results look great (bank 1 sensor 2 doesn't jump up & down). Really appreciate your help in making the process an absolute breeze!
I just did the job and did not have to take off the power steering pump bracket. I used a modified 14mm Gearwrench All I had to do on the modification is grind out a couple spots on it to allow me to ractich it one click at a time until the nut came loose. It worked great and saved me an hour plus time.
Good video. Mine is 2006 year which will be the same and no doubt will have to change my CAT at some point. I like that you've included torque settings, a great help, many thanks. Have subscribed.
I have a Mitsubishi Lancer 2008 DE. I am having the P4021 threshold below efficiency bank 1 sensor 1. I’ve replaced the ERG valve , all the carbon, replaced all my 02 sensors . I was going to buy the cat under the vehicle because that is what everyone is recommending but now I’m not sure. Would it be fixed doing this way in the video or the one under my car ?
Hi Angel, I dont think issue was with the sensors or EGR, since even after replacing it didnt fix the issue, However before you try to replace the Cat, make you Cat System shows ready, and give you the same code. If it does then issue is your cat. Good Luck,
I have a 06 lancer es it need a catalyst converter after watching your video and what they want to do the work I'm just going to junk it the cost exceeds the value of the car

I also tried a flared crows foot 14mm for better grip it won't even fit lmao. So now after wasting a whole day I have to do it the hard way anyway. Be careful is all I'm saying
AfzaMoto, what was the part number for the new catalytic converter you used in this video. I would like to know because I have a 2005 Mitsubishi Lancer with the same code.
That white powder on the tip of the oxygen sensor is what got on the honeycomb part of the catalytic converter, that is caused by a lean condition so either old spark plugs or failing mass air flow or something else, if you can get a cleaner that can remove that powder out of the honeycomb there is a high chance you might be able to get rid of the code.
is there usually a problem that causes the Fail of the Catalyic convertor ? I heard that there has to be something that leads to its damage so that if you change it, it will break again very fast. any ideas on this ? thanks
Wow seems so easy due to your detailed quite tutorial. But it seems like that 1 nut fucked up everything lmao. If there was access to it without having to pull the steering and etc the work would be cut in half.

Junior Espinoza hi, thanks for watching my videos. I would try to eliminate other factors that could distort the o2 sensor’s value. Please check my video on how to diagnose a bad catalytic converter. It lists some possible causes and try to eliminate those one by one. Your last resort should be to change catalytic convert. If there are other issues that are not fixed after installing a new converter. It could end up going bad very quickly. th-cam.com/video/DoOXcN0eAN0/w-d-xo.html Good luck and let me know if I can help any further.
Quick question I have the same code coming up on my 2002 lancer. Are there more than one catalytic converter? I bought a new one that goes underneath the car. Should I send it back and buy one that is in this video?
I have a 2010 kia rio, lx ave it has repeatedly gotten a p2096 code, even after I replaced the upstream o2 sensors add cleared the codes thrice now. I took it to the shop and they informed me that both of my sensors are working fine. about 6 months ago I abandoned muy car because it was running very rough due to a bad coil pack I installed, which I left that way for a long time, therefore everytime I started my car, it would misfire. I left it this way for about 3 months before I abandoned it. I'm convinced that my front converter is clogged because I allowed it to misfire so many times. I ruled out a vacuum leak, and it no longer misfires. I also don't think my car is equip with a maf sensor. I thought it might be the fuel injector, but if I'm not mistaken, that is behind the front converter. What do you suggest? I'm considering removing and cleaning the front converter.
Ayana Sioux Art Hi Ayana , thank you for watching my video. I really like your determination and persistence on getting this issue resolved. Here are some of the things I would do before pulling out the converter. Check fuel trims lean/rich this will indicate potential air leak, injector issues, understanding these levels can help. I would suggest watching a video on lean/rich levels. Check for any oil leaks Check for if engine oil is at normal level. Too much oil can also destroy cat Compression test. Check spark plugs. Do a air leak test. Even a small pin hole leak can disrupt the functionality. Check air flow sensor.
AfzaMoto: Thanks, very good one! I wonder where you got the repair manual. Going through this+the manual at the same time would be a good combo. Also, I see autozone has catalyst alone without exhaust manifold, maybe a good option.
The Mitsubishi Lancer ES has 2 sensors, but as for your car I would not know. But I can suggest looking into your car manuel if you have it look in there and also try checking you tube videos of your car and see if anyone posted a video

Hi, thank you for making this video. The mechanic told me my car has the p0421. But that's all he told me. I don't know if it's bank 1 or bank 0. I don't know which catalytic converter to replace, the one near the engine or the one under the car? Can you please help me with this? My car is a 2003, Galant, 2.4L. I already replaced both o2 sensors.
Allan Rimban the first cat converter like you see in this video is the only one that's monitored the one underneath the vehicle does not so no engine codes will come on so if you replaced both your sensors and still have the code then it's the first converter that's the issue like you see in the video and for future cars if you get this code again check your converter first because 98% of these codes are for the converter and not the sensor
Allan Rimban no prob if you scroll through this guys comment section he's got some insanely detailed comments and answers that would help your problem out he's also got a video how to diagnose a bad converter you should check out

+Gabe Diaz Thanks, I am still working on it, however if you need any help on it right away then please let me know. I will send you a text document. thank you
thanks for the help. I previously replaced the converter on my 2002 lancer a few years ago. the p0421 came back after only putting 35,000 miles on this new cat and keeps coming back after i cleared the code a couple times. i knew something was not right so i did some more research and there was a recall to reset the car's computer back in 2005 before i bought the car from the original owner. it appears he never took it in and that may be the source of the problem. i took it in and had them reset the computer at the dealership and the code still came back. the converter might already be damaged and i need to pass smog ASAP. i'm going to clear the code and drive it for awhile to see if the code comes back. if it does i might need to put another effing cat on. i'll keep you posted.
+AfzaMoto i'm going to take a look at the oxygen sensors too but i doubt that is the problem as the code is for the cat again. you can't return a used sensor so it would just be a waste of money if its the cat. either way when they take that converter off I want to look at myself and inspect it. hopefully that computer reset at least prevents another early converter failure.
I agree. A month ago I had to go through all of this due to a smog check problem. Hopefully you have an honest mechanic who will provide you with an accurate diagnosis and will not waste your time and money. I always had a bad experience with my mechanics and ended up understanding and diagnosing the whole problem all by myself. I recommended that you understand the below areas before investing time and money because if the actual problem of failure is not fixed then there is a possibility of your new convert failing due to the same unknown reasons. I. Perform exhaust leak test, a small leak, pin head wide can trigger catalytic convert code. II. Leaks from exhaust flange can trigger the code. III. A clogged EGR Valve can trigger it. IV. A bad PCV can trigger it. V. Any vacuum leak can trigger it, defective throttle body, MAF, engine valve cover leaks. VI. Defective O2 sensors. VII. Inspect for rich/lean conditions. If you don’t have any of the above issues, and all of the sensors are working normal than we can assume that the ECU is reading correct data and it is not distorted (any of the above issues).
+AfzaMoto yeah it's going to be a pain in the ass but I want to take care of it once and for all. thanks for the great tips. I'll let you know how it goes.
Henri Verwayen, my problem was catalytic converter. Once I verified there were no issues with any leaks, O2 sensor and many other others things I had to verify before changing. This video only shows you how to change the converter. Also code means that's readings from bank 1 to bank 2 are similar.
Hi Joshua, it worked for me, did you complete the drive cycle for the catalytic converter? watch this presentation on diagnosing a bad catalytic converter, th-cam.com/video/DoOXcN0eAN0/w-d-xo.html. thanks and feel free to ask any further questions.
my 02 Mitsubishi lancer rpm when I start it is at 2 and 1/2 its high I think. also its slow to get to 55mph. do i need to change my cadillac converter? ?
Kristina Knott Hi Kristina, thAnks for watching my video. If your engine light is not on then all systems are working okay. Unless it was reset. So I would suggest connecting obd-II scanner and make sure all system are in ready status. If not you will need to work on the system/fix. Other things you can look into is cleaning egr, pcv and make sure you don't have any vacuum leaks.
AfzaMoto yes engine light was on and brought to oreilys to have them read it. it did day under threshold forgot the numbers thou. Lola but they did say it was cadillac converter. .its hard to find a mechanic that won't over charge u or will do a good job. plus I live by myself so money is tight. so is. there anything else I can do besides changing parts?
Kristina Knott, all other alternatives are difficult. Ur only other option is to find a used cat and have installed by your mechanic. I bought mine for 325 I am guessing it will take 2 hours of labor to install a new one. So you could easily end up spending 475 to 525. Used cat might be able to save u 150 on the total cost. Your car will not stop working due to a bad cat however your car registration might ask for a smog check that requires a functional cat. I hope this feedback helps and good luck.
I have a 98 Mitsubishi galant GDI , that's starts and run good when its cold for about 1-2 miles then starts to idle and shuts off especially if going up a hill , I lost for what could be the problem ? .any suggestions ?.
Arkenseth Israel hmmm, I would check the fuel trims also vacuum leaks. But in anycase car's computer should give u some sort of code. Check with a scanner and see if all of the systems show as ready or complete status. Let me know. Thanks
AfzaMoto I take it back ! When my car is cold are normal temp ! It starts good , however when you drive it for a mile are so and the temp for the engine go up like a quarter the engine begins to lose power and the warmer it gets the more power the engine loss so when it comes to hills it just shuts off ! But will shuts off the longer it gose ! And when its off if its hot are warm it won't start until its cold again I made this evaluation this morning , .

William Lomax it looks exactly the same as 2004, but I don’t think this is interchangeable with the link you just sent me. I would check with the seller if it’s interchangeable.
its easy to fix and stop the engine management light coming on, it's because the cat is starting to break up and block the exhaust system causing an over rich mixture thats detected by the downstream landa , one of the best ways to fix the engine light problem is to simplify look down the exhaust or up into the manifold and see if it's blocked and running black over rich, if so smash out the blocked cat with a length of steel bar shoved down or up the exhaust system, will mean taking it apart, but you have to be careful not to damage any landa sensors in the process take them out as well if need be, once done disconnect the vehicle's battery to reset the engine management light that's if you don't have a reset tool, once all put back together the management light shouldn't come on and the vehicle will run properly again as an over rich mixture can cause very poor running, to get it through emissions testing next test go become friends with your local garage and bribe them to use another vehicle to stuff the tester up, everybody dose it here in Britain and if you've got the problem you haven't got much to loose by doing this or it's off to the dealership and loose shed loads of money, and the really funny thing is they run better and use less fuel once the cat is gone.
this is exactly how I like the video no chat or music and great zooming in and easy to follow directions. great job

Is this video applicable to the P0420 BANK 1 code on the Lancer? I already chanced both O2 censors. Thank you for this video sir.
Henri Verwayen, my problem was catalytic converter. Once I verified there were no issues with any leaks, O2 sensor and many other others things I had to verify before changing. This video only shows you how to change the converter. Also code means that's readings from bank 1 to bank 2 are similar.
bank 1 and bank 2 ???
what happen if i dont change the manifold i only remove the catalytic ?
i got the far left bolt out with a double sided box wrench
did it actually work cuase I just got that code for fail at warm up so I am replacing o2 sensor at top an cat
Hi Joshua,
it worked for me, did you complete the drive cycle for the catalytic converter? watch this presentation on diagnosing a bad catalytic converter, th-cam.com/video/DoOXcN0eAN0/w-d-xo.html. thanks and feel free to ask any further questions.
Is it possible to get to that lady exhaust manifold bolt without taking off the power steering bracket? Like from underneath
Detailing With Drew yes you can, using a crow foot tool.
th-cam.com/video/0EjICSp7oAo/w-d-xo.html
This video shows you, how this tool was used to remove it. Thanks
So is this Code what's causing my car not to accelerate faster?
yes it is possible, mine did that. After replacing the CAT, there was significant HP increase.
Hey where did you get your cat and for how much
325 from eBay
What kind of time commitment is involved in this project?
Jeffrey Hawkins hi Jeff, 2 hours if you all the tools, parts and instructions.
great video bro! can you do a video replacing entire AC
Thanks, it is on my list, i will update you once I make it. Thanks for watching my video.
+AfzaMoto thank you I subscribed👌

where did you buy the part from? I need to buy one and can't find a good price.
ebay seller name is daytonakiamitsu
What would you consider "a good price"? Asking as someone who needs this specific part replaced.
***** under 500
I bought it off of ebay for 330.
most sellers on ebay dont ship to california due to restrictions.
very nice info
Thanks
my 02 Mitsubishi lancer rpm when I start it is at 2 and 1/2 its high I think. also its slow to get to 55mph. do i need to change my cadillac converter?
AfzaMoto thanks for taking the time to respond to my text.. ill look into that thanks.
What did you clean with?
break cleaner
I have a 98 Mitsubishi galant GDI , that's starts and run good when its cold for about 1-2 miles then starts to idle and shuts off especially if going up a hill , I lost for what could be the problem ? .any suggestions ?.
Arkenseth Israel so no engine light ?
AfzaMoto no , no engine lights ! .and starts as good as new when you restarts it ! But when its warm up are hot it idle to start.
Arkenseth Israel hmmm, I would check the fuel trims also vacuum leaks. But in anycase car's computer should give u some sort of code. Check with a scanner and see if all of the systems show as ready or complete status. Let me know. Thanks
AfzaMoto thanks a lot .
How do you remove the two bolts on the side of the belt(s)?
you can access those from under the car,
Did you have to remove the black panels in the wheel well? I was following your video and trying to do this yesterday, but got stuck at that part (with the 2 bolts)
Does this apply to the 2013 model?
Sorry Trevor, I am not sure.
Thats the exhaust manifold the converter is underneath the car
Can I clean it instead of replac?
If I can clean it please tell me how!
Can you possibly point me in the direction of the link for this part kit online?
William Lomax hi, I bought it on eBay, here is the link California Certified Catalytic Converter 2004 Lancer Genuine Mitsubishi Part ! rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F380375593048” thanks
AfzaMoto I found this one, do you think it would work on a 2004 and be a better choice part? m.ebay.com/itm/GENUINE-MITSUBISHI-2005-2006-LANCER-CATALYTIC-CONVERTER-CALIFORNIA-CERTIFIED-2-0-/253056729116?nav=SEARCH
William Lomax it looks exactly the same as 2004, but I don’t think this is interchangeable with the link you just sent me. I would check with the seller if it’s interchangeable.
Thank you very much for this.. did you have any other problems with this same light after replacement?
William Lomax no problems,
For that one screw that is in a tight spot a crows foot would do it without extra work
it's very good
Anti seize???
Where do I find the part number?
I bought this on ebay,
Clean
Dry good
hello how mach the catalytic
Javier Martinez 325 from eBay
id hollow it out dude look at all that restriction...........yea i would have hollowed out the old one ..
so complicated to replace .. What a hassle
its easy to fix and stop the engine management light coming on, it's because the cat is starting to break up and block the exhaust system causing an over rich mixture thats detected by the downstream landa , one of the best ways to fix the engine light problem is to simplify look down the exhaust or up into the manifold and see if it's blocked and running black over rich, if so smash out the blocked cat with a length of steel bar shoved down or up the exhaust system, will mean taking it apart, but you have to be careful not to damage any landa sensors in the process take them out as well if need be, once done disconnect the vehicle's battery to reset the engine management light that's if you don't have a reset tool, once all put back together the management light shouldn't come on and the vehicle will run properly again as an over rich mixture can cause very poor running, to get it through emissions testing next test go become friends with your local garage and bribe them to use another vehicle to stuff the tester up, everybody dose it here in Britain and if you've got the problem you haven't got much to loose by doing this or it's off to the dealership and loose shed loads of money, and the really funny thing is they run better and use less fuel once the cat is gone.
Can this cuase your car to jerk in gear
thought it was going to be easy until 5:12
pain in the ass lol
