Handy Heater Review: Does it Work?

  • A hands-on review of the As Seen on TV product called Handy Heater.
Regarding the issue of the heating element when turned off: Other customers have stated the same concern, although it appears that this is merely an LED back-light (simulated heating element?) which gives the inadvertent appearance of a hot element.

We have a couple of these units and we use them in our RV. We winter in our RV in The Great White North (Canada), and we find that they make a significant difference in our bedroom area.
We use a Mr. Heater Big Buddy (portable propane) as our primary heating source, but these little electric heaters are worth their weight in gold to us. We have one running constantly (it’s FREEZING here) and keep the other one as a backup.
They cost pennies to use, which is nice, and the dry heat offsets the moisture produced by our Mr, Heater Big Buddy, so we couldn’t be happier with our little combo.
As concert artists, we’re on the road for about ten months a year, so we’re particular about the quality of everything that keeps us warm and healthy.
I’d recommend these little dynamos to anyone. (Our RV/tour bus is 192 sq. ft.)
    Love and All Good Things,
    Jesse.🌹

I installed this unit in a small out door house for my cats. The house is only 14 cubic feet and has an always open door way and a smaller "escape hatch" in the back of the house which has a cloth flap door. I used it all winter and the only problem I ever had was it shut off because I didn't set the timer right. Since no cats were using the house at the beginning of this month I kept it turned off. A neighborhood mother cat moved in today with two kittens about 4 weeks old. I've turned it back on and they seem really appreciative. These cats were previously living outside under a nearby porch. Where it was somewhat open to he elements in that gusts of wind might have been "broken down" some and no rain could get them but the temperature undoubtedly was the same under there as outside, sans the wind chill. For my purpose it works great but I don't know how anyone would expect such a small unit to warm even a small room in a house. It might be worth it to heat a little kids play house in the back yard but kids being kids would be opening the doors and even leaving them open. Not to mention I'd never feel 100% safe having this around my kids unless I was there watching everything.

I have just received my handy heater and it stopped working after half a minute !! It won’t start up again. It looks like there’s a short somewhere. I tried to set a different temperature but it doesn’t work at all. If it doesn’t work how am i supposed to see if the timer or shut off works? Would not recommend this product. Bought via Amazon next day delivery, will be returning it today !! Cheap and probably nasty !!

We use one in our 18 ft travel trailer and it works great 👍. It does have an internal thermal switch for safety and will trip if you block the airflow on the bottom or front of the unit. The glowing you are seeing is not the heating element, it is an orange led they have used to give it the look of a fireplace. Ours will come to temp and the fan will continue to run on a delay until the element cools. The fan will now shut down, however the led will stay lit, giving you that orange glow. We have used ours while camping in moderately cool Florida winters, about 45 degree outside temps.

like all heaters, their thermostat is interfered with by the heat it produces. You will never have an ambient temperature away from the heater, which reads the same as the thermostat connected to the heater unit. It's just common sense.... which obviously Freakin' Reviews doesn't have... regardless of that, this unit could be defective... hard to know from the video if it's a defective test...

I have it in all my bathrooms i dont use the timers all we do is turn the unit on when were going to shower when you turn it on its in 90 and high it works best in that setting so just turn it on when needed and then turn it off when your done its the only way it warms the small room and only a small room, it does the job for me I've had them for over 2 years now and they still work.

I own this. I don't use the timer feature. When my brother in law would do overnight stays, we would usually get this going 20-30 mins before he went to bed with the door closed. And yeah, maybe it didn't get super hot in the room, but for us you feel it kept the chill off and maybe added a slight bit if warmth. Now that room tends to be colder since it is not completely next to the heater in our mobile home. Unike my bedroom that gets roasting hot. But I so far have no objection to it.

The heater works as a ventilator. it sucks all the air in the room slowly and emits warm air. its working like a charm with me. Also it is totally safe to use unless you really don't know how to place it properly.
it takes about 2 to 4 hours to heat up a totally isolated home.

  • @BirchlegGrim

I have one of these for my RV and I use it in the bathroom. Works great for me. I don’t really care if the temp read out is accurate because I’ve gotten used to what temps I want at what time. For example, I set it at 76 when I go to bed (during cold winter nights) and it keeps my bathroom from being a refrigerator when I get up and use the rest room. I set it to 80 when I take a shower and it makes the bathroom nice and toasty.
I’m pretty sure the heating element doesn’t get red hot, but there is a LED light in there that makes it look like it’s red hot.
I bought this one and a ten dollar version at Walmart on the same day and this one is far better than the ten dollar one.
If you need decent heat in a relatively small area, this is a good heater in my opinion. I’ve been living in my RV for six months and it’s gotten down to 20 degrees outside, but my bathroom is nice and warm thanks to this heater. For the rest of my RV I use bigger space heaters (electricity is free with my rent).

I have 3 of these heaters and they work just fine .. the smell is because it was NEW, it eventually goes away .. I love the 12 hour timer and the H and L settings .. even when on high setting the sound is not as loud as a hair / blow dryer .... and it does shut off when it reaches the desired temperature and will resume again when temperature drops !! .. that light that stays on just glows when it turns off but it does not throw off any heat ... when we got down to minus 19 degrees last winter ... these handy heaters were a blessing !! I'm thinking you just happened to get a bad unit or you've not played around with it enough . ( just saying what my experience has been with these Handy Heaters ) I give them 5 stars !!!

You mentioned that it sounds kinda like a hair dryer, which made me laugh. My mother had a full bathroom and if it’s cold out, she takes her hair dryer out, turns it on high heat/low speed and the bathroom gets so hot, that she comfortably bathed, gets out to dry, and comes out almost sweating!! Maybe you could compare the two?? BTW, I am LOVING your channel!!

    Hi,
We had ours for about 3 years & we used it mainly in the toilet room for emergency heating in the winter time. So it was used very very little. 🙄
But recently I decided to open it up to clean it (as it was quite dusty inside), but when I reassembled everything the fan stopped working when I turn the unit on. 😕😞
I checked it with a bench power supply & the fan works fine. So I suspect the temperature sensor is the culprit or faulty. 🤔
Still worth the buy (for such the price) in my opinion. We only paid 20 € then. But now you can get it for 14 €. 😏
    Best Regards,

We have them under a different brand name in my country. Looks like a good way to burn down the house. Would never trust a heating element that close to a socket and wall, especially one that needs an active airflow to cool down. Have to say that setting any heater or your thermostat above 69 for heat is wasteful-each degree above that adds 10% to your heating bill. Also since 80% of our energy STILL comes from coal-we ALL need to conserve to reduce our use of fossil fuels that ARE altering our environment and causing more frequent, stronger disasters. Americans are the most wasteful people on this planet and if every country lived as we do-we would need 4-5 earths to sustain our habits!! We have an obligation and responsibility to HELP transition to CLEAN, RENEWABLE energy sources for children now and in the future and for ALL those effected by droughts, flooding, tornados, hurricanes, wildfires, etc!!
Also in the summer people should keep their setting at 75 or above and use fans. Again each setting lower is 10% more on your bill each degree.

The temperature around the heater itself may differ from that of the other side of the room, causing it to shut off before you want it to. Best bet is to set it at the max, then when the room gets to the temp you want you set the digital thermostat. I do the same with my A/C unit in the summer.

I have the handy heater and use it in a small space Also it is only good for like small bathrooms when taking showers or heating it for kids to take baths mine. Shut off very frequently I've had it for a short amount of time I do not think it would be my first choice I would not have bought it if I knew it did not work as effectively as seen on TV

I have one of those in my bathroom, but the temperatures are in Celsius, up to 30°C (86°F) with a 12 hour timer. When I set it to 25°C (77°F) and take a hot shower, it stops running but doesn't shut off.

On my handy heater the heating element inside shuts off first when it reaches the desired temperature and then the fan continues to run and cool the element and then the fan shuts off. I'd consider that a bonus how many heater fans do that ? The temperature setting does seem a few degrees off maybe three or four degrees. Not a deal breaker and mine works well in a small room. Plenty of heat. For the price its not bad. And like any heater they need to be monitored to insure safety. Mine also has the orange glow LED light when plugged in so when you see that its not the element glowing hot its the LED light inside. Im not sure why its there but its easy to see your heater at night when you see that light you know where its at in the dark. It adds a nice look to it in addition to the temperature setting readout display. Id rate it close to five stars as its pretty good at doing its job. UPDATE After closely watching the set temperature on mine I have to say its spot on. 68 degrees is 68. Considering the fact like I said that it cools itself down before shutting off I'd give it a five stars. Mines a dream.

Very good honest review and, you showed a normal bathroom (thank god). A lot of these products are flooding the market and simply don't work in normal conditions. I used to have a bungalow that had warm air flow central heating and cost a fortune in electricity bills, this seems like it's just on the same lines. Although these units save space I suppose you can't beat a small mobile, oil filled radiator, at least you know the heat is good with those.

I just got one of these at home depot today.
It did thermally overload after about 20mins on HH (High) and it didnt turn back on.
I'm not sure if I got an updated model or not. Thermostat seems to have a wide range for like, turning back on.
Say it's set to 72. It might shut off at 70-71. And seems to need a higher temp drop to turn back on, as I have to raise it 2 or 3 degrees to get it to turn back on, on LOW.
On high. When it reached temp the whole thing turns off and I couldnt get it back on.
Was thinking about modifying it and yanking and looping thermostat. While trying to keep thermal OL on it.
Many heaters come factory that do this WITHOUT the thermal. So if it can keep thermal runaway protection then it would be fine
I would rec people just buy a normal little black comfort zone 750/1500 heater with a good thermostat for same price. They always work and work well.
In that case, if I did mod the thermometer.. its use would be limited to super cool nights/days. Just like we are coming into in the next week.
    And I'm from N TX

The air circulation is strongly impaired by the position/location of the heatere -- in the corner. Don't you think the air flow will be deflected off the wall and back into the heater?? It will affect the thermostat reading.

I think this is designed to be a desk heater. If the thing is directed straight at you, then you might enjoy the heat. It's not designed to heat even a small room.

Steven, I have two and believe it or not they are really safe. I usually set mine to low and away from curtains and beddings. I will say this; it can be loud. I have only used it a few times only because it is loud. Mine is a little different from the one illustrated.
