About to go fishing on the Jersey shore in the morning. I got some gulp, do I just put it on the hook and cast it? Do I need a weight or anything else? Right now my rod is set up with a weight, swivel (I think), and a hook that has the shiny tale thing you used it the video. (Sorry I’m new to this haha)
Its ok! It is all a little confusing at first but will make sense soon. If you are on the shore, you will need a little weight to get to the bottom. Drag the gulp really slow along the bottom with little "twitches" as you reel in.
@@BobAquaticthanks for advice man! tried around noon today and no bites, but I know I should’ve gone earlier, also there was a big sandbar. Going back out later
hey mandrinvuthatj4543. It is a G Loomis steelhead rod. I wouldn't recommend it for most applications in salt water honestly. I just use it for particular methods. Not a great all around rod. Reel is a Penn Clash II 2000, I highly recommend that reel, here is a link: amzn.to/4cgDZFq
Its crazy, me and my buddy were out for 2 weeks fishing almost the same exact waters and caught 0 fish, we would have been happy with a sea robin. you Just casually stroll out and catch multiple keepers

Hey man I’m in Suffolk county getting into fishing for the first time in my life. After some extensive research I’ve finally got almost everything I need to get going. Just wanted to know What process do you recommend I take in finding good spots to go fishing at. I’m tried at a couple local marina’s as well as sore thumb beach and a few others but I haven’t had any good luck aside from a few bites and a few that got away. Haven’t gotten anything rewarding yet. Any insight on how I can find more places would be helpful. I have found that everyone in the community out here for some reason tends to gate keep locations lol
I would download navionics and learn the structure of your area. Take it to spots you already know and look at the depths based on your location. Cross areas off the list that are good or bad. Ask yourself, why would a fish be here? Is there bait? Is there structure? You might have an incredible spot in your backyard. If you are worried about that gate keeping mentality, you are already fishing wrong. Fish move around and spots only matter if you understand how the tides affect them differently. Keep a log book of your catches
@@ConeyIsland1952 hey coney, it’s a gulp sandeel. The one I had is silver/black. Not sure if they make other colors but the ones I get are silver/black and look like an albie snack
@@BobAquatic very interesting as a Bass angler sometimes I'd like to go try Saltwater fishing off the beaches I am so close and your videos are very informative and what weight Jig do you use Thank you
You're reeling in too fast for the flounder to see the bait. The flounder lie on the floor. You must let your bait sink down far enough so they can see it. Both eyes are the same side for a reason. They are looking up for prey to the swim by. Try it, you'll like it. That's why you're getting everything but fluke.
Hey bob. I’m one of your biggest fans, I’ve seen all your vids. I really enjoy them, thanks for the consistency. What time of day do you typically fish? I’m down here in the dmv where the fishing can be hit or miss. Curious to know when they bite, where you are
@@reeldrytv hey reeldrytv, thank you for the support. There are about four bites per daily cycle. Morning/evening dawn & dusk. Then there are two tidal bites. They typically occur on the beginning and end of the tides. I don’t have an exact answer to this because every year cycle is different and you have to adjust daily to the tide.
I was here yesterday , I spent 3 hours casting and trying different lures and baits but no luck. You make it look so easy. May I ask, how long is your rod? I was using a 7 feet rod.
@@ponci1119 I use 7ft for fluke. This is a 9ft this day but could’ve done the same with a 7. You don’t want a long rod for fluke, your wrist will get tired quickly
Does being enrolled in the marine fishing registry counts as a fishing permit in this area? I was watching this place and there’s a sign saying that you need a fishing permit to be there. Sorry I’m not that familiar with permits and licenses in NY.
hey, not too sure. I get permits through the DEC depending on the state. NY has a DEC website you can get permits from and is required to fish from this pier. They do check sometimes so its best not to risk it
The permit that the sign is talking about is probably for parking and night fishing. You can fish there with a free saltwater license but you need a permit to be able to park there and to be there at night.
Weather and tides, moon phase. I spend a ton of time prepping fishing trips dialing it all in beforehand. It doesn’t always work out, but pattern fishing is how my brain breaks it down and is very productive
The drag was not set correctly and sometimes I will do that to get a feel of how I need to adjust it without turning the dial. Turning the drag dial while fighting a fish can be a no no because drags can slip and you can lose the fish from lack of tension
Now that's a nice day had! Catching at a few diff spots. A few diff species! Thanks for taking us along with ya! I frequently use that rig also. The bucktail tipped w sand eel. What size bucktail was that Bob? 1oz or less?
