  • How to replace the power steering belt on a Ford Edge. These are 1 time use stretch belts that have no tensioner, so special methods are required compared to a standard accessory belt. I replace the other belt as well.

    Great video on filming the actual job of installing both belts. Seriously I've seen so many and this is by far the best.

    lol, the end is me the first time I tried this! You have to use the heavy duty thick ass zip strips

    I have to say Thank you for making this video, you made things way easier for me. I tried installing the small belt for at least 2 days and wasn’t able to until I found this video worked like a charm really appreciate the help 👍🏽

    I just spent the last part of my night pissed as hell. The out takes just showed me I was not alone in my frustration. Tomorrow I will get that damn belt on.

    My solution for the engineer problem we have is that all engineers should have to work on the engines they come up with. Bet you they figure out their designs suck or that they themselves suck. Hopefully both.

      Yes sir. That tool is proud example of alcohol ingenuity. Thanks for taking the time to put out the video. I just bought a 2012 edge with 115,000 on it so I just want to go through it and looking for people's thoughts and opinions.

      Haha that's a good point. I normally leave out the struggles and related cussing, but I figured I'd add it to this video to show that it really isnt as easy as I made it look. You're welcome for the video. Hopefully it helped you do the job without completely losing your sanity.

    Thanks for the video. Im in the process of changing the alternator which is just as stupid of a job as what you are doing here. I hope you never need to change it or any other ford edge owners out there, as it involves dissembling the whole engine bay... Ive had 8 zip ties snap while trying to put a new belt on for good measure and im gonna go try the pipe clamp trick you use here! Hopefully that works. Thanks a lot! :)

    The pulley you clamped the belt to moves freely in your video. It's not budging on my car. Why would that be?

    • @darkhorseautoanddiesel
      @darkhorseautoanddiesel  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is the power steering pump. Some resistance is normal. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but if it is impossible to spin by hand, then it's probably locked up and needs replaced. It's only 3 bolts and a few hose fittings, but due to its location, it is NOT a quick easy job.

    • @kirstenwatt9605
      @kirstenwatt9605 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@darkhorseautoanddiesel thank you for the quick reply! My dad called right after I commented and kindly explained I had to remove the old belt before it would spin. Belt removed, it spun no problem. I'm 5 parts into what should've been a 1-2 part repair job. 😅 This far into the project, I'm certain the Edge's design was a giant F-you from the engineers.

    • @darkhorseautoanddiesel
      @darkhorseautoanddiesel  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kirstenwatt9605 Well, removing the belt would help, you didn't mention that part 🤣 What are you trying to repair?
      I agree with the last statement, the way these things are designed is definitely not friendly to anyone that has to do any repairs. Sadly, that might be the point. Make it so difficult to fix that the labor cost makes it prohibitively expensive, so people just buy a new one.

    • @kirstenwatt9605
      @kirstenwatt9605 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@darkhorseautoanddiesel this repair started with a battery light popping on. Tested the battery, it was bad. Replaced and tested the alternator. That was bad. When I unscrewed the fan from the radiator to replace the alternator, I discovered a hole in the radiator caused by a 1/4 inch too long bolt. Finally got to the alternator and both belts were cracked and missing pieces.
      After I put everything back together and started 'er up, a P0020 engine code popped up.

    • @darkhorseautoanddiesel
      @darkhorseautoanddiesel  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@kirstenwatt9605 Wow. Looks like you have about the same kind of luck I do. Fix one thing, something else happens. Went though a spell like that on my work truck. Oil cooler had an internal leak, fixed that, then the transfer case started making bad sounds, replaced it, then the radiator started leaking, replaced it, then a u-joint started going out, replaced it, then the power steering pump sprung a leak. It may not have been in that exact order, I don't remember, but either way, it sucked!

    i dont understand how you slipt the belt over the big part mine is too tight and wont go

    • @darkhorseautoanddiesel
      @darkhorseautoanddiesel  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I started it out wrapped around the big (crankshaft) pulley. It is a very tight stretch, hence my use of a hose clamp instead of zip ties, and the resulting outtakes 🤣

    My tensioner will only go to the front of the car. Making the belt tighter. Help

    • @darkhorseautoanddiesel
      @darkhorseautoanddiesel  ปีที่แล้ว

      You either need to push harder (it does have quite a bit of tension, more than you might think) or you have a belt that is too short and, somehow, someone managed to slide it on there. Or possibly a tensioner that has somehow failed internally and is preventing it from going the direction you need, but still keeping tension.
      If you can't get the tensioner to move at all towards the rear, you may have to remove it from the engine. It has 3 8mm bolts holding it on. If you have to take it off, unless it looks about brand new, replace it.
