At least there's an "Old Folks Home" for antique iron with a good nursing and doctor staff.
Perfect!😂
9.00 that gentleman deserves a medal for his dedication to the machines 🇬🇧
Those are awesome - I imagine the gentleman that looked after them for the last 50 years is sad to see them go. You can tell he took great pride in them. Glad you were able to give them good homes and they aren't rotting away in a bush somewhere.
For sure. I would love to get mine all painted up in the coming years
I enjoy living vicariously watching you boys with your toys, especially when over 60 years ago "Mary Ann Steam Shovel" was my favorite book
I loved that book.
I sill have my copy, 60 years later!
Amazing that the shovels were still being used and had been so well cared for throughout their lives by a dedicated mechanic/engineer. I bet you couldn't believe it when you found them, straight start - no jump pack action certainly didn't have Matt's name on them! Did they, Thanks Sam & Big John
Wild isn’t it! I had no idea any were still in use
All the old iron you and diesel creek revive or preserve are just awesome. Amazing how far we have come with technology but the old timers were smart
Just think about it, at one time, each piece of ALL that equipment was the newest, upgrade of its time ! Cables then hydraulics !! They needed both hands AND both feet to operate alot of that stuff... compared to now(two hands, legs crossed[relaxed]) oh, and they added heat(not just how warm the motor got inside the body with operator ) and A.C !!
Those machines with the Murphy diesel were fairly comfortable to run in the summer, as the fan drew air from the house and pushed it out through the side, and by opening or closing the doors for airflow, kept a good breeze going by you.
I love seeing that old Superliner on the road, looks great with the lowboy behind it.
Old School Iron, always cool to see a part of history still in action🤘 Have a great weekend Sam👍
Years ago I watched an old guy (everyone was old I was 8 or 9) dig out the side of a hill with one. That ground was as smooth as if it had been graded. He also dug a trench for a gas main that was smooth as glass. His name was Hubert and had been a Sea Bee during WWII.
That man could make any machine he operated an extension of his hands.
Thanks for saving these old machines. Marion Power Shovel was another manufacturer.
Cheers
Terry
I had a 1952 model 25 dragline crane, still had the Murphy diesel, biggest 4 cylinder I've ever seen, 4 inches longer than an 855 Cummins, but very easy on diesel.
Folks think those old machines are made of iron, the truth is they are really made out of grease, the iron is just there to hold it all in place.
For the open gears for the swing and travel, i was told by the old timer at the Northwest factory so had been there since the 50s to use "gear shield extra heavy" by lubriplate, it comes in caulking tubes, and it is extra sticky to stay in place.
Jeez, that Mack Superliner sounds amazing. Those big EA9 V8's have a sound all of their own! Love these little screamin' Jimmy powered shovels! Both of them sound like they've been well-maintained!😄👍👍
I find it so refreshing to see young guys like you actually get into saving these old machines, and have the interest in them and can run them as well. God bless you both, and Matt as well for saving and repairing the old machines and equiptment and using them, givening them more and new life..Nohting like watching two guys playing in the dirt!! Awesome!
I looove the sound of that Mack. Always a cool videos boys
Probably the shortest "Will it start" video I've ever seen. 2 beauties, looks like they've got a lot of life left in them. Fun to watch the digging race at the end.
You guys probably already know this, but having run a couple Unit magnet cranes and an American 4120, we always kept the drive sprockets to the rear when traveling. If the tracks are even slightly to loose, they will come off easily with the drive sprockets forward. Keeping the drive tension to the bottom of the tracks makes all the difference. Awesome vid, glad I found it. Brought back memories
I guess I’m truly old, because I remember shovels like those actually working on construction jobs. I’d stand there forever watching them.
I didn’t realize you could buy one in the 70’s. Seems everything went to hydraulics overnight, about the late 60’s. The only cable machine I ever ran was a Bucyrus Erie dragline. It was on a barge and used for dredging and setting pilings for a marina.
Wow! That was an awesome episode!!! That Led package really makes that thing awesome in the dark.
Fun video, Sam. Loved it. Thanks for sharing. It was good to see you, Big John, Geno, and Matt working together again, sort of like a "super-collab" video. 🙂
And now for something completely different. . . 😏
The structure of the video was unusual for a Scrappy Industries video, though. It reminded me of watching an episode of the Twilight Zone as a kid. . . a bit surreal. 😵💫
In this video, you introduced the topic, went somewhere, loaded up some equipment, took it somewhere, and demonstrated it working.
• There was no need to clear trees, or dig and pull the equipment out of the mud. In fact I didn't see any mud around the equipment. The cable shovels were sitting on a large, mud-free, crushed brick surface. Weird.
• I didn't see any cans of ether or jump packs being used, since the engines started up easily. And there was no need to troubleshoot why an engine was losing prime, or how "all that diesel fuel" got into the oil pan. Between yours and Diesel Creek's videos, I didn't realize that 50-year old diesels could be started without ether and a jump pack.
• No onsite maintenance needed to be done to get the running gear unlocked and functioning so that the equipment could move. But that was probably just a side effect of having NOT sunk into the mud over the last 20 years.
• And, except for Geno's cable shovel slipping sideways a few inches while loading after the equipment demonstration - a minor issue addressed by the judicious application of bulldozer (thanks Matt) - there appeared to be no significant struggles or mishaps during the entire video. This was very odd indeed.
Everything just. . .worked. Many thanks to Mr. Dan for maintaining and taking care of the cable shovels all these years. Well done. 👍
Love that Mack Super Liner. Thanks for the ride and the sounds of that E9 beast.
Nice toys. Looks like some folks are having a blast. Tks for sharing.
I like watching you come down old US 40 to get to steam town yard.
Kinda cool to see these still being cared for! As a kid growing up in Green Bay Wisconsin we would go past the Northwest Engineering Company and see these in various stages of development.
Nice one guys. That ending with Matt’s D-9 was the cherry 🍒 on the top, that thing is one cool 😎 monster.
I really hope you can have the caretaker out to the show and have him out for coffee and put him in front of a camera telling you the ins and outs of those machines in detail
This made me happy! Love seeing those old girls do some heavy lifting.
Moving dirt, one bucket and the next. Thumbs up 👍
Came over from Chris Chanel! Those machines are super cool but that super liner big dog take the cake! Love it!
LOVE that truck. Thanks for letting us ride along Sam!
A+ content Scrappy! Thanks!
With 3 shovels you can run a construction business. Greetings from Germany.
E9 Superliner sounding good!
Wow, I wasn't aware that cable machines were being manufactured as late as 1973. My guess would have been mid-50s and early 60s at the latest.
Point of fact, P&H and CAT still make rope shovels.
Just the very large electric variety.
Me neither. I'm curious if that's the most modern shovel at the steam show.
I was thinking the same thing lol it has to be up there
I didn't realize when you told me Sunday about new shovels that they were yours..lol. Looking forward to August to see them all in action again. Thanks for the video, bud!
I look forward to it! Thanks for the hat!
This ,,is equipment heaven on earth, good stuff, dreams are made from this , beautiful sound and people, thanks BigAl California, thanks to all of you that have served, and are ,serving now, for my country thanks BigAl
That shoval is in great condition and would still be very practical to work at something.

Brilliant video Sam watching from Edinburgh Scotland UK 🇬🇧 👍
I passed you coming up I-470 outside of Wheeling a few weeks ago. I thought hey Sam. The first thing I noticed was this old shovel. Well done.
Pure music all the way through , sending this to a few mates who will love it.Brownsville reminds me of happy days at BELTRING war & peace show in England , the hay daze were 20+ years ago before the so called authorities ruined everything .
Great to see these all still shifting .
We have been very lucky so far over here for sure
I remember watching a Bucyrus 22B and 19B (both backhoe configuration) putting in our town's new sewage system in the early 60s......also like watching this guy operate that NW....
Repowered with Detroit 71 series power! Your best video yet Sam! Love the channel!

28:35 - like a chorus line!! All those girls dancing together.
I'm old enough to remember when these were on their way out, Great save, you Matt & Gino make a good Team, not forgetting Big John, keep up the good work 🤠
Congrats on the N/W purchase. the comparison of that and the 22B was interesting. Great video.
Glad you enjoyed it!
That LED light package is one sign the shovel has been well taken care of
You could buy new shovels right up to at least the late 70’s, many 1 1/2 yard shovels were still building logging roads in British Columbia well into the 80’s, I think the last one I heard of building road was in 1992, or somewhere around there. The Cat 235 broke, so they brought the old American 750 out of retirement for a bit. They were good machines, built a lot of roads.
Sam that was a super awesome video those 2 Truck's side by side there no words to describe how beautiful they look.
As for the Cable choves there upstanding and working in excellent condition is awesome to see how awesome machines like that revolutionised the industry in the old days and can still working in the modern day 👍 👌
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks for the content Sam! ❤️
Awesome save cant wait to see the 3rd shovel.
Iam happy for your shovels :)
Nice to see you guys are conserving these industrial monuments. Thumps up and that Mack of yours is awesome! Looks 100% original.
Looked like a couple ole pros operating those shovels, nice job. Shovels looked to be in really good shape, fun to watch. Always fun to ride along with ya, especially in the big dawg. Thanks for video, enjoyed watching.
The "how dare you" on that Mack is out of control, I love it.
IYKYK
Great find on those two machines. I love how you guys are finding this stuff and preserving it . Would love to come down to see your club grounds sometime . Not as much of that type of thing on the other side of the lake from you guys up in Canada . But we still have some . I’ve always wanted to to find an old cable machine for show . My dad had a Borthwest 25 D dragline and a Bucyrus Erie 30B draglines ne when I was a kid . I want to find something like that maybe eventually . I still have my 89 Mack Superliner E9 powered of coarse. I only use it for my vintage truck shows that we are starting to get into pretty heavy up here . A nice crane or shovel project would be a nice addition to my collection . Maybe someday . I really enjoy your videos. Keep them coming.
I would take the Mack everyday but that KW looks like a nice heavy haul setup.
Nice old iron that can still move DIRT , Thanks for saving them!
I hope to make your August show and meet you and Mr.diesel creek. You guys come from the part of the country where I grew up.
I love the sound of a old Detroit 😌 they are such reliable old engines ❤❤ those shovels look great and seemed to preform pretty good too ❤❤❤

Thanks 👍
D9 didn't even know there was something to push lol love your videos
Hope everyone brings extra def fluid to the show 🤣🤣
Two really nice red rigs and you boys can ride the snot out of them. Three cool shovels ready to go!

A D9 is ALWAYS a solution - maybe not the RIGHT solution, but A solution.
Anyone that doesn't like a Mack. Never
Drove one
Waiting on your video of the 3rd shovel, that you took to letsdig18.. thanks for sharing this video.. 😊
My Father loaded R20 3 windshield Euclid end dumps under machines like them in the 50's& 60's

Looking good Sam!! Nice find.👍
Great video
What a score. Congratulations! I enjoy your channel. Best wishes.
Good night from the mango farm Thailand
I would get confused with all the levers to make it run
@7:26 man that is two absolutely beautiful trucks. I have legitimately ZERO use for a truck like that, but damn I'd love to have your Mack Sam. The only truck I love more is the KWhopper-100 cab over. Maybe one day I'll "grow up" and find an excuse to buy one.
I'm just a big kid and incredibly jelly of the toys you and Matt get to play with every day. This stuff is just so dang cool!
Hi Sam & it's is Randy and i like yours video is Cool & Thanks Sam & Friends Randy & Super Cool Saving Antique Cable Excavators & Friends Randy
I bet Matt just loved pushing you with the D9
Great video bro, I have seen one video of the show but looking forward to more if they are on the toob. Really good finds that have been so well cared for too. Safe travels. Ken.
9:46 Any machine that starts that easily is too good for Matt! 😂 That thing started in a half turn of the motor! Sam you sure do like(love) these cable shovels don't ya? 🤔😅 It's so nice that these machines are so well taken care of! 👍🏻👌🏻🏗️🚜🦺🛠️🔧🔩🇺🇸
Now you just need Chris(@letsdig18) and (@dirtperfect)Mike to come with their shovels so you can all play in the 'sandbox' together! That Steam Show place looks really sweet, I gotta take a trip out there someday to check it out! 👍🏻👌🏻
Thanks for another great video Sam! Love the old iron!
