      Wouldn't it be better to eat it everyday for breakfast lunch and dinner so the persons brain revaluates cake as very low until the person gets sick and doesn't eat cake for a long time after that,,,, ?

      @@lightbeingpontifex The difficulty with that might be, that the habit of eating cake to maintain your dopamine levels gets so ingrained, that quitting it becomes more difficult and cravings become worse. If you get through this beginning period I do agree, it definitely demystifies the greatness of cake and makes the awareness part a bit easier

      @@lightbeingpontifex Its called a "binge" and it makes it worse as it reinforces "addictive" behavior which is worse than "habitual" behavior.
      It means binges followed by a long rest period which you're basically waiting for the next urge to binge just creates and reinforces addiction.
      Best method I've tried is dopamine fasting 2.0, there is a cool video (with drawings) from After Skool.

      Or how about not eat cake at all ,,, like ever, so you won't have cravings,,, and just switch to something else like cigarettes,,

      @@lightbeingpontifex Full abstinence is the obvious outcome to overcome dopamine addiction but takes time and self-awaresness to rest urges.
      Switching to something else should be redirected to something better, self-improving.

    Last year I was committed and my assigned psychologist was surprised I knew about my alcoholism and the "reward system" of the brain and instant gratification and release of dopamine.
    I was sober for a month before I relapsed; then I realized every time I threw a tantrum or got upset, the LCD was booze.
    It takes _sheer_ will power to discipline yourself and say "fuck this shit. It's dulling my senses so I can't feel anything; but it's getting my no where fast"

    I went through a breakup and during my moving on process I unconditionally did this same thing
    I loved that girl soo much but every time I had that craving of fixing everything I just recalled why I broke up and my brain just remembers those old moments where dopamine used to kick in and that I will not get that same rush again and it's all just a delusion and controlled my urge to go talk to her

    I always try to appreciate all the food I eat and be aware of it, and I can tell you a good cake tastes much better than broccoli! I don't eat cake every day of course. I think this advice can only help people who really overeat all the time and there is no reward when you feel sick from eating too much, but for kicking sweets out of a diet in general I don't think so.

    This helped me . I don't feel bad when I'm rejected by people tbh they are just saying the other person or people they are with are more rewarding than I am
    They get something from being with that group of people or person what they were not getting from me. Being single sounds awesome 🥰 I'm glad I'm single

    The only way I've ever been able to give up negative habits (physical and mental) has been thru hypnosis. I have gone to hypnotists for overeating, boredom/depression, psychosomatic pain, and each time after no more than 2 sessions the problem is gone.

    Found this video while looking for ways to cut down on vaping. I found that when I paid attention to me body, I didn’t like how nicotine made me feel. My heart would race and my mind would feel stuck, and I would more often than not get a headache. I’m aware of this feeling but my body still craves nicotine. As I work through my cravings, I’ve found eating spicy snacks when I have strong cravings helps me put off smoking.

    Great animated video! Rarely struggled quitting undesired behavior, except for swearing a ton. I still think there's content missing on youtube that's covering "How to continue doing things that feel unrewarding & used to be rewarding", especially if you feel like you have a lot of grit / willpower generally speaking.

    I actually did this to quit cigs. I randomly have one or two, like a couple a month maybe.. I have been quit for 10 months, with basically no problem at all.

    what if most of my existence feels dysphoric and acting out the reward seeking behaviour feels slightly less so? And yes, I am a psychiatry patient. Just asking how you think that this method is applicable for that situation.

    I don't know if the experiment fully explain the claim that consuming more of something would break a habit. Me smoking weed everyday or tripling the dosage for a period of time does not make me break the habit. I think the idea of being extremely aware while doing the habit at times wouldn't help me either because I am alleviated from some distress. Some bad habits are hard to reverse because it could be compromising from even worse habits or a trade off from contraindications versus it therapeutic benefits. There need to be more data for different scenarios in order to be relatable and meaningful sources.

    I like the concept and agree it will work for a number of things, but what about things that just don't seem/feel rewarding? Not everything that feels good is good in the long run. I can drink a can of coke and it tastes delightful, but other times, it doesn't. How would awareness address this?

    Another thing with bad habits is that, for instance for smoking, awareness can play a part in bringing you to your senses as in what you smell and taste is bad! Is not rewarding! But the reality is would you even be able to feel that intensely to quit it considering that after years of smoking you have become DESENSITISED to the smell and taste.

    What if I am aware of the reward of a bad habit, and I update the rewards value through awareness and I still find the reward valuable? If a bad habit have a pleasant reward wouldn’t awareness just amplify the “bad reward”?

      It's all about your perception. Yes, you can perceive something to be good and beneficial, and continue to do it. But the whole point of awareness is to break your ideal image of what you think 'feels good,' and shows you the raw, unfiltered, and unbiased truth. So yes, you can convince yourself that whatever the behavior is does, in fact, have a higher reward value, but having awareness of the truth of the matter---as bad habits are bad for a reason---is what ultimately allows you to break free.

      @@johanm2304 No problem! I was able to find the documents with my original thoughts (it's a bit of a read...)
      A bad habit is bad for a reason. Take the smoking example. The man knew that smoking was bad for him, and yet he would do it anyway out of habit. The knowledge of "smoking being bad" was not enough for him to just simply put an end to it because he had become so comfortable and used to the reward system.

      I think that another big part of it is the fact that we as people are constantly growing and changing.

      The awareness talked about in the video is meant to give you a new perspective on your everyday life; a life that becomes so dominated by routine----whether intentionally implemented or not-----that it can be hard to tell the difference between the days. "Mindfulness creates an awareness outside of our emotions and allows us to see the truth about the loop we are in and creates an escape hatch for us.

      I think I get what you're saying and I would say both yes and no. If you think of awareness as weighing the pros and cons of an action/habit(which I believe you would do based on your emotion) you'll obviously come to the conclusion that it was good and continue to do it.
      Last week I started a new show in the middle of the week. the show was fantastic, but I have a habit of having to binge every. new. show. that. I. watch. Looking back even right now, my brain recalls that being a good experience that added to my enjoyment of life and learning. I think "okay so i wasted a lot of time and didnt get anything done, but that was most certainly time well spent." and that is exactly the problem. for the rest of the week, any time that I had to do something that included working or was difficult, I created an excuse to go online, and since I have of habit of becoming very easily distracted, I get sucked in for hours. I literally did not get anything done at all this week. I have nothing to show for 3 days worth of time. I have a theory that your bad habits tend to build off one another....
      having awareness is meant to give you a realization moment, its meant to stir up and bring to light conflict between your values and your actions. To question yourself.
      I think that for me, the truth of the matter is that sometimes you have to put in a little bit more to break through the hardness to find the reward. Maybe if I would have taken the time to clear my mind of any unrelated stress (via mindfulness/pray/etc) and break down my tasks step by step before starting a seemingly impossible task, i wouldn't have been derailed so easily. If I even would have reached out to a family member or even a friend for help w/ accountability or difficult problems, I could have remained encouraged. or even planned a break! I think I'm starting to realize that it simply isn't a bad habit, but is going to truly bring me down from the inside if I'm not careful. in other words, it ain't worth it.
      You just got to take it step by step, identify it, dont let it escape you, and then take the steps to change from there.
      ------
      From this point in my life I've learned that it isn't very easy to change. Small things ARE hard, and that's okay. Key to acknowledge this and use it as a reason to rest and persevere rather than an excuse to quit. to continue to get back up when you try and fail and try and fail, and to be your own friend.
      Just a whole lot of different thoughts from over the course of a very long year

      Step 1: Buy modafinil 200mg pills (it's mostly legal, but it's expensive)
      Step 2: Take one pill everyday at 6am
      Step 3: Study
      And that's basically it, i should mention that it's non addictive and even safer than caffeine. Worked for me.

    The video was cool.. but that "awareness" things sucks. U need to reward the behavior of not-smoking. Start rewarding yourself every hour (or any other significant period of time for u) without smoking. Every hour with smoking gives u credit to eat a candy or take shower, any thing u want can be a reward...u choose..

    Awareness... to the taste? That's sensory; pastry, chips, pizza, soda--salt, sugar, fat, unami engineered to light-up our reward system vs. cooked, plain broccoli? No contest. So how does one update the reward value when comparing a superNormal stimulus (engineered processed food) vs. a simple natural/normal stimulus such as broccoli? That would seem to require deep understanding of our reward system, the value one personally places on taste (reward) vs long-term health, a willingness to live with less hyperPleasure and accept much more subdued sensory rewards... and more. This would require a significant amount of cognitive skill and emotion regulation to rein in the primordial survival instincts. One could call that willpower.

    Even if this could work I don't see how awareness would make healthy food more desirable. Everyone knows what healthy food looks like and may even enjoy it. I know I love veggies, eat the daily. But put a pcs of fried chicken in front of me and I'm sorry but chicken wins.
    Sounds like "awareness" is just another word for "talk myself out of" rather than reprogramming my brain to get the same level of reward from bland food.

      Good point. I think this video focuses on the case where you _no longer_ enjoy something but stick to it by force of habit. It's less applicable when the behavior is genuinely still rewarding. But perhaps you could alter your perception of rewards by intentionally directing your thoughts to pleasant or unpleasant things; e.g. for smoking, think of horrible cancers whenever you pick up a cigarette, or imagine the healthy life you could have when you put one down.

      Because most people feel better eating cake than broccoli. Also cake tends to be tastier and more filling than broccoli.
      I’m one of the few who’d reach for broccoli though.. unless there’s cheesecake

    But once a while
    And im not addicted to it, because i just use it as "medicine"...like a consultating tool for a thought
