I love both tbh. Moving from Elon's Twitter to Threads or Bluesky feels like moving from a chamber full of toxic gas into nature with clear skies, green brass and fresh air.
I just barely signed up for threads and it's already a mess of weeds. I constantly get thread suggestions in my Facebook and on threads for women. I never asked for these and I definitely don't want them (I'm married). I like the fact that bluesky gives you more control over your social media, including the blocking of unwanted content. The moderation settings in BlueSky is incredible. So even if BlueSky is a water hose, you get control over the hose.
I think Threads has a taste, it's just not one that a lot of former Twitter users like. It's a blend between that and Instagram. Bluesky has that Twitter sauce. And yes, Mastodon is software. It's like a word processor. Or a video encoder i open occasionally.
I’m leaving Threads for Bluesky for a single reason. In the face of the incoming administration, I do not trust Zuck to protect the privacy and speech of users on any of Meta’s platforms.
David is wrong about the iPad being a stay-at-home device. Every day at universities there are students, faculty, staff, and administrators walking around using iPads (and Surfaces) as their main device. Laptops are more of a stay-at-home device for people would be my argument than a tablet that is easy to carry and mimics a lot of the same UI as modern smartphones.
I've been on Blue sky about 8 months and I was slowly pulling people over. One by one. But as a entrenched member of black Twitter after this election I made a concerted effort to start pulling people over and to have them pulling their followers over. And that has led to what to a cascade or what we've come to call "The Skimmergration". I also might have yelled at The Verge Sunday night back on Twitter to get that Verge account they have had on there for a while to get going since I bot on a different account was just posting Verge articles. And they listened so kudos. But yeah, blue sky has all the juice. You can actually talk to other people there. And whether you want it or not, "skeets" is what we're calling it. We had Jake tapper live on a CNN saying 'bluesky Skeets'. It's beyond us now. 😌 🦋 It is a cool social. Feels very Facebook in 2004 Twitter 2009. But with much better moderation tools and features. Make no mistake though, this is an altruism. My prime directive is the crater elons X. This is sheer revenge.
Yeah who would want free speech! Keep trying to abolish it in the name of your goals. I know a few dictators that would be very proud of your ideas! Good job!!
Last night I created my first Bluesky account and was comparing it against Mastodon. Very interesting to hear your thoughts as I'm developing my own first impressions.
No protocol should "win". We don't need another platform as influential as twitter was/is. We don't need a global town square. It'll be better to have multiple smaller town squares.
"there is only one server" that's not true. There are many self hosted servers and anyone can host a PDS server of any size, you just don't see what server other users are on because it isn't tied to their identity. Many users on the platform self host, and I've even tried it, so I can confirm, there are other servers, however small, and however different from the idea of Mastodon servers.
Show and tell segment should be call "did you heard" like gossiping tech news 😂, however unless there's an specific topic is tough to come up with a scoring system.
I had the same thought; at least the Pixel Tablet can be used as a regular tablet. Just as confused as anyone as to why they're not just making a wall dock of some kind for the existing iPad line and calling it a day
I'm not moving to Bluesky because I don't want anymore new social media accounts. When I deactivate my Twitter account, that's it for me. I'll only have Instagram and TikTok left.
I don't feel like "show and tell" was any different than the lightning round, bc the lightning round rarely goes quickly anyway, so it's just each of you presenting something you read about that week anyway.
"AGI on current hardware" is the exact opposite of "Our new models are not better". As you said, a research breakthrough is needed, and that is not inherently dependent on boiling the ocean harder. I.e. volume vs quality
I think you have to be skeptical of anybody with financial interests in tech, but LLMs went from 10th percentile to 90th percentile on the bar exam in a year. Most STEM subject matter experts will tell you they're competive in their respective disciplines as assistants. The Vergecast always seems so dismissive with phrases like, "Line go up." And yet, you think the lessons from Facebook and Google will be the same we learn from Anthropic and OpenAI.
I don't like that the shift to Bluesky feels politically driven. My goal is to find a network design around connection and not around creation or news. I want people to talk to, not a place to be sold things whether thats a product or an idea, I just want a social network.
42:20 actually it’s a brilliant idea . Have you tried to engage old people with technology ? It’s not just and iPad I guess you don’t get the friction point that Apple is trying to solve
1:45 - Re Musk changing algorithm - is there an objective proof/article of this take? Surprised Nilay shared such a conclusive opinion as the Verge’s Leader on X’s platform without providing a meaningful verbal substantiation (saying they wrote an article etc). when i didn’t hear enough to objectively get beyond him sharing his own experience.
Buying Twitter was such a bad move that the only thing he got out of it is a privileged seat at the US government and becoming the right hand of the US president. Bad purchase indeed.
Let's be honest Threads sucked it is basically Instagram with some twitter like features added to it. X's biggest problem is the lack of moderation which is causing users and advertisers to leave the platform due to how toxic it has become. Blue Sky is similar to how Twitter used to be before Elon Musk single handedly destroyed the successful company by axing moderation staff and allowing the vilest disgusting posts and misinformation on the platform which would not have been allowed under the previous ownership.
Two things drove me away from BlueSky. The weirdo factor and the character count restriction. The latter is just too restrictive for someone who enjoys lucid writing.
That’s not actually the news - the news is that those brands collectively spent 98 percent less money on X in 2024 than in 2023 www.adweek.com/media/advertisers-returning-to-x/
Lols Nope. 1 million have left already. So much so BlueSky had to add more server capacity due to the instant shift, way more are coming. No one is going back. They're either closing their account and leaving social media entirely or migrating.
I get what everyone says about their Twitter complaints but it’s so easy for Americans and the tech industry to jump platforms when u do all together. Games media is still on Twitter. Local Canadian journalists are all still on Twitter. Film and TV are still on Twitter (not talking about actors who contribute nothing anyways). Tech is the only industry that’s saying no one is left on Twitter. But when I go to any other platform I feel like no one but you guys are there. And guess what, ur still all posting on Twitter too 😂
We'll see how that turns out in a year. Given everyone I follow has either left or is crossposting on both with their Bluesky handle as their Twitter use handle.
@ you’re honestly very lucky to be in that position. 90% of those I follow, mostly local journalists and gaming journalists are still mainly on Twitter. I wish I could leave but it’s just simply not as easy as The Verge makes it sound to be.
It's adding like a million users a day, and this weekend will probably be a big inflection point for it. It's the network effect in real time. Haven't seen this happening in real time since Musically became Tiktok.
Bluesky actually feels like a "Text First'" platform, unlike threads, which is basically the instagram explore page.
I love both tbh. Moving from Elon's Twitter to Threads or Bluesky feels like moving from a chamber full of toxic gas into nature with clear skies, green brass and fresh air.
Took the jump over to Bluesky and the platform feels alive unlike threads where you've got to dance around the algorithm

Look. Just the fact they call the posts on Bluesky "Skeeting" sold me 😂😂😂😂
Show and Tell should be renamed "Lightning Round Pro Max".
The problem is that the people who have clout on Twitter refuse to give it up in order to migrate elsewhere
Is it just me or does this episode have a LOT of words from sponsors?
Great episode team
I recently got back on Bluesky and I think it's a better interface than Threads...it just feels better.
