I made this recipe and it was AMAZING!!! Only 1 modification which I strongly suggest: CUT THE CUPS OF POWDERED SUGAR BY 50%. I have a sweet tooth, and 3 cups was more than enough sugar, in fact when i make this again I am going to taste test at 2.5 cups. Other than that- perfect recipe and straight forward for a novice like me.
I am a sixty plus woman and due to two cardiac arrests I suffered hypoxic brain injuries that caused me some difficulties with doing one of my favourite things cooking. Your videos and recipes have allowed me to enjoy this again. It is you delightful presentation that makes one feel that I could make that. I have also introduced my daughter to your channel.
I baked this and took to a dinner party last night. Big hit with everyone! I did add cardamom and allspice along with the other spices, and it was delicious!

It still tasted good but everyone else in the house kept complaining about it being hard.
My grandmother made a spice cake every Christmas, she’d decorate it brandy cherries. I think I am bring this back this year, thank you for the inspiration!

I just discovered this video December 2023! I am making it for Christmas Eve with family coming over for desert! It smells sooooooooooooooo good! I am making it a day in advance and will keep it in the refrigerator. I also found your recipe for the perfect Turkey!
I have made this several times now and absolutely love this cake! I usually make the applesauce myself but this time I had some organic pears going soft so I made pear sauce instead. Oh and I cook it in a 9x13 pan instead and I don't frost it, I just sprinkle powdered sugar over it after it has completely cooled. It's so moist and flavorful that it doesn't need frosting. Of course, I understand that's a matter of personal taste.☺️
So I made this for Thanksgiving, John was such a lifesaver for me by his advice of using the scale for measuring. This cake was so good, but the frosting is super sweet. Next time I bake this I'm going to do 4 cups of powder sugar compared to the 6 cups the recipes calls for. I'm hoping that does not change the consistency of the frosting too much. Anyway, great fall recipe for family and friends 😋

Amazing cake! To tie all the yummy spices together, my grandmother would add a few drops of anise extract and a pinch of salt to her frosting. It really made a delicious difference! Took up the flavor a few notches!

I loveeee Spice Cake, my Grandmother made it often, but she made a lovely vanilla Buttercream frosting, once in a while she made the cream cheese frosting. This looks delish.
I made cupcake versions of this and they were SO GOOD!!! Such a moist cake with so much delicious apple and spice flavor! I ate it with homemade apple butter too! Your recipe from the book, of course! The apple butter really makes a world of a difference!

Spice cake is my very favorite cake to make and I think my recipe is similar to yours! I even add applesauce. It's the perfect addition and makes the cake so tender and flavorful! I usually decorate the top of the cake by sprinkling chopped pecans around the edge.

John, if you have hens that give you fresh eggs, may I suggest you add oyster shells, along with the gravel, to their feed? My grandfather used to say that it hardens the shells to keep them from being so "crumbly" when you crack them open.

I tried making this both with and without cake strips, and it turned out better without them. With cake strips, it turned out a little underbaked…soft around the edges and slightly deflated in the middle. So, not totally ruined, but still better to skip cake strips for this one.

How long do you bake it in a 9" x 13" pan?
