I've been watching cooking programs since I was in my teens, and to give you an idea of how long ago that was, the two that I watched were Galloping Gourmet, and Julia Child. I watched, bought the cookbooks but your recipes are the first that I've made consistently. Yesterday it was Apple Crisp. Thank you for bringing new life to this 70+ woman..
I can BARELY remember it, but I used to watch the Galloping Gourmet too. I was 4 or 5. 😅

I baked this and took to a dinner party last night. Big hit with everyone! I did add cardamom and allspice along with the other spices, and it was delicious!
I made this recipe and it was AMAZING!!! Only 1 modification which I strongly suggest: CUT THE CUPS OF POWDERED SUGAR BY 50%. I have a sweet tooth, and 3 cups was more than enough sugar, in fact when i make this again I am going to taste test at 2.5 cups. Other than that- perfect recipe and straight forward for a novice like me.

Just popped it in the oven. It's the third time I have made this cake. I don't frost it at all, I just sprinkle powdered sugar over it as it's already extremely moist and delicious. Oh, but I don't make it in rounds, I bake it in a 9x13 pan.
I used to make the spice cake from the box when I was younger and remember liking it. I can only imagine how good this homemade cake tastes. I want to make this. I love anything with cinnamon and love all these spices in this.
I am glad you clarified the use of oil in this recipe, I feel like I never want the make a cake without butter due to flavor but I once refrigerated a pound cake and it turned so hard. Lol. It still tasted good but everyone else in the house kept complaining about it being hard.
I have made this several times now and absolutely love this cake! I usually make the applesauce myself but this time I had some organic pears going soft so I made pear sauce instead. Oh and I cook it in a 9x13 pan instead and I don't frost it, I just sprinkle powdered sugar over it after it has completely cooled. It's so moist and flavorful that it doesn't need frosting. Of course, I understand that's a matter of personal taste.☺️

So I made this for Thanksgiving, John was such a lifesaver for me by his advice of using the scale for measuring. This cake was so good, but the frosting is super sweet. Next time I bake this I'm going to do 4 cups of powder sugar compared to the 6 cups the recipes calls for. I'm hoping that does not change the consistency of the frosting too much. Anyway, great fall recipe for family and friends 😋

"swoopy moment" I had to chuckle when you said that. It's such a joy to watch your cooking and baking videos cuz not only do I learn something but you always bring a smile to my face. I can't wait to go out and get some buttermilk today so I can make this for dessert tonight. Big question though my husband doesn't like cream cheese frosting so do you have a frosting you recommend that goes nicely with this cake?

I loveeee Spice Cake, my Grandmother made it often, but she made a lovely vanilla Buttercream frosting, once in a while she made the cream cheese frosting. This looks delish.

I made cupcake versions of this and they were SO GOOD!!! Such a moist cake with so much delicious apple and spice flavor! I ate it with homemade apple butter too! Your recipe from the book, of course! The apple butter really makes a world of a difference!

I made it! Delicious, aromatic, soft, … The smell in the kitchen was amazing! I made the cake to gift it. A success! My batter wasn’t as loose as yours, but I added a little more buttermilk. I made it the previous evening and assembled one hour before delivering. It was even better, I know ‘cause I tried the trimmings. 😉🤭
I’ll repeat the experience in a few days.

Amazing cake! To tie all the yummy spices together, my grandmother would add a few drops of anise extract and a pinch of salt to her frosting. It really made a delicious difference! Took up the flavor a few notches!

Spice cake is my very favorite cake to make and I think my recipe is similar to yours! I even add applesauce. It's the perfect addition and makes the cake so tender and flavorful! I usually decorate the top of the cake by sprinkling chopped pecans around the edge.

I tried making this both with and without cake strips, and it turned out better without them. With cake strips, it turned out a little underbaked…soft around the edges and slightly deflated in the middle. So, not totally ruined, but still better to skip cake strips for this one.

John, if you have hens that give you fresh eggs, may I suggest you add oyster shells, along with the gravel, to their feed? My grandfather used to say that it hardens the shells to keep them from being so "crumbly" when you crack them open.
