    Speculation is fun and your enthusiasm is great. Two elephants in the room though.
    1. The only reason the French trains have a short single-deck section is due to height restriction, i.e. they can't fit a pantograph on top of a double-deck car. This is not an issue in Sydney.
    2. There's a reason the T4 is all Tangara. The power supply in the underground section is inadequate for higher powered IGBT Waratahs and Millenniums. Any direct replacement for the T sets would need to have a low-power mode.
    The solution to higher frequency is not going to be a new design train but Automatic Train Control. Already, without it, 3 minute intervals are an everyday thing on the western line and when ATC becomes operational on the T4, and the Metro extension frees up more line space and stock, I expect frequency will improve there too.

    • @CityConnectionsMedia

      1. no? the MI-09 I show in the video is fully double deck and has pantographs on the double deck cars. This is true for most of Paris's RER network.
      2. Tbf nothing I discuss excludes addressing that. Imo the better option long term would just to upgrade the substations, because we're going to have to do it eventually anyway.
      And yeah, ATC will increase frequencies, but a train can't depart if it's still loading.

    • @peterelvery
      @peterelvery 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I should elaborate. It's not the 4.32m maximum height itself (100m less than Sydney) that is solely responsible for this design on the Regio 2N.. It's also the choice to maximise space by having full length upper and lower decks, no doors and open gangways at both levels on the main cars, that leaves no room for pantographs, requiring some cars not to be dual.level and with all the electrical equipment on the roof.

    I think that the design you've proposed of a combined double deck and single deck set up is great, however I would make one change to your design. I think the end carriages should be the double deck section and the centre carriages should be the single deck. This can be achieved either through a D-S-S-D-D-S-S-D set up (where the D is a double deck carriage and the S is a single deck carriage) or a D-D-S-S-S-S-D-D arrangement. The reason I think the latter would be better is because for the most part at most stations in Sydney, passengers tend to crowd around the station amenities which in most cases are around the centre of the station (I know this isn't always the case, but does fit the bill more often than not). This means that in this set up there are more doors where the people are. Short distance travellers will hover around the centre of the platform, and long distance travellers will go to the end carriages to find a seat and settle in. Having all the single deck cars connected also gives more seating options to passengers needing accessible seating, rather than them being stuck in the one or two cramped vestibules of the double deck carriages. It's a radical idea, but honestly, the issue of boarding time is becoming the limiting factor on the network. At the same time, we also aren't ready to give up our double deckers yet. In the eyes of the general public, because a double deck train moves more people it's a better option. The average commuter doesn't understand the science of headways, acceleration and dwell times and how all of these can add up to get a higher People Per Hour rate of movement from a single deck train than a double deck train, even though each double deck train can move more people per train. Based on this logic, I believe that a completely single deck train would be rejected by the general public.

    • @maccomplex
      @maccomplex 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      While a completely single deck set may not be ideal to the public, the union may support the compromise if it avoids further sections of the network to be converted to metro. Totally agree with the balance you have described.

    • @staryoshi06
      @staryoshi06 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@maccomplexUnfortunately being single decker is not the reason the government liked the idea of the metro. Otherwise they would have ordered single decker trains a while ago.
      I don't think many (or any) more sections will be converted though. The bankstown line conversion is due to it causing many issues with scheduling on other lines. Also, the other lines need to remain interconnected to support intercity services, freight trains and special event services.

    In brisbane we have longitudinal seating on the 2 most inner cars which means at peak hour the two cars where people are most likely to board from have the most capacity and then the other sections have our standard seating I think that would work well for Sydney like having single deck where you have the most people board and then the normal seating for those longer commuters so that if people are only on it for a short journey they can just stand and those that will be on it longer can find a seat

For example, "customers" getting on a City bound V set at Eastwood were told by the guard that "this train has 16 doors, not just two!" as they were all trying to get into the first car which would be closest to the exit at Central Station.

    I think that regarding the mixed-deck design: I believe that would be most optimal, but the double-deck cars should be more targeted to the edges. Passengers crowd to the middle of the platform, so that should be the section designed for highest throughput. (also means you can just copy the double-deck cab cars from the current waratahs!)
    And also, you simultaneously encourage passengers to move to the ends of the platform to nab a good seat in the double-deck cars
    So basically, ends of train are for long-distance, middle of train is for high capacity

  • @w1ll14m6

    Part of the dwell time issue is station infrastructure.
    .Stations with platform heights that vary along the route. and stations where the only entrance and exit funnel people to say 3 cars rather than spreading the load.
    Given that much of the station infrastructure dates back to the steam train era. its only those that have been disability upgraded not focused on Load sharing. the signage about which carriages are full and empty are misinterpreted.A urgent need due to the rapid increase in density of areas around train stations. the need for better access and a common platform height.
    But Curved station platforms remain an issue some of Sydney's busy stations have curved track alignments and so putting more doors per carriage wont help. you just have pass angers falling onto the rails more frequently and Delays lengthen accordingly.
    So, Fix the stations and dwell time and congestion might be achievable

    Every Sydney Trains / City Rail train released after the Tangara is based off the Tangara's design and are in fact, 2.0, 3.0 etc. That means Millennium, Oscar, Waratah and the not yet used Mariyung. I think it was a design that's stood the test of time, similar to how the Windows 95 interface is still used today.
    That said, I wish the Mariyung trains were a modern take on the V set, not an continuation of the very suburban design of the Tangara.

  • @v666fromhell6

    I was thinking the Tangara replacement being just another 4G train upgrade like from Millennium to Waratah like maybe same layout as Waratah with a more sleeker front end design and a few extra features to make things more convenient like vestibule seating that can flip up for bike storage since the current Millennium/Waratah trains don’t have all vestibules for wheelchairs, so it would be good to see what that space could be used for. Worst case scenario a Waratah Series 3, but the Waratah design now looks too “last decade “ so a new refresh should be on the cards at the very least, if not a new generation train entirely, but keeping it all double deck but with better access.

    as much as I think partially single-deck rolling stock would be a good idea, the orange/yellow double decker trains are kinda iconically Sydney, and it would probably not be politically feasable given that the average person probably sees that as a decrease in capacity (bigger = better in the average person's mind).

    I was at Sydney Terminal the day the Tangarbage was launched. I rode on that set, which was at that time "TAN 1" and later T20, many times over the next 15 or so years. I soon took an immense disliking to them. They initially had noisy brakes, bad seats, bad internal doors, and nowhere to put a bike. The G set was an improvement, but only in the seating department as they had reversible seats and a slightly better external appearance.
    The C sets, which were originally numbered from K40 upwards, were never good trains. They had rock hard, fixed seats, and were noisy. Couple them with an S set or a regular K set, and your ride just got worse! The K sets, which came in two batches, had problems too. They weren't originally air conditioned, having only "forced air ventilation," and were heavier than an S set because of this. They only had S set running gear, and so suffered poor acceleration, and bad braking.
    Newer trains such as the Oscars and Waratahs I never had much to do with before I moved south to Victoria. The Melbourne Comeng sets rate as our best trains, with 3 sets of double doors per car, good ride quality, and ok air conditioning. The X'traps bounce all over the track, while the Siemens only has 2 sets of double doors, but at least they ride ok. Then there's V/Line, but that's a horror story, and I'll save those comments for another time.

    I think making the staircases "double width" (so they go from the wall to the centre of the car, wide enough for 2 people to walk down side by side) would do a lot to help the loading. I don't know if they could do this, because right now they used that space for equipment, but it should be something they look into. Then you either make 2x2 seating on each deck, or 1x3 seating. 1x3 might sould stupid, but since the stairs are offset to one side, it would make sense for the seating to be as well. Also what I have experienced from most trains, is that longitudinal seats take up the same width as two transverse seats, because everyone's knees stick out. Meaning not only is the isle practically the same width as a train with 2x2 seating when loaded, but the extra "standing room" really isn't worth the cost. It would be better to put in 1x1 transverse seats, not only does this provide even more standing room, it also give people more personal space away from others and they can sit facing the direction of travel. Yes that means even fewer seats, but whatever.
    Also the longer dwell times from double decks comes from three factors.
    1. They fit more people which means more people have to load and unload which obviously takes longer (most single deck metros in crush load can get short dwell times because a lot of people are left on the platform becuase the train is full). (Note more standing room in single deck trains will have the same effect).
    2. They normally have fewer doors for the amount of people they fit, but this also applies to single deck trains with too few doors
    3. When they the stairs are too narrow, they can be a bottleneck when loading and unloading, though this isn't always the case and is mainly only a problem when a train is unloading or loading more than 50% of the passengers.
    Anything that reduces the impact of those three factors will reduce the dwell times.

      The Tangara stairway was classed as double width compared to the earlier generation stainless steel trains (S, C, K, V sets & Tulloch double deck trailers). I agree there is still room for improvement to made the steps wider. When you consider human behaviour, most people stand in a way that obstructs the stairs from being 2 people side by side anyway. I remember being impressed by the Dutch DDIRM which managed to have double width stairways with an elevator in the middle of them to lift the passenger attendants catering trolley between decks. However they have a wider loading gauge than Sydney does.

    Maybe UGL should just be asked by Chris to build Tangara 2… and make it a sequel to the original ,but make it more modern. Like metro are doing with the X2 trains

    Problem with the current government ordering replacements for the Tangara is the last 2 orders Labor government made for new trains failed (for reasons that have become someone fluid) to run on the T4 line leaving only Tanagaras on that line, I'm concerned we'll all be walking which was a suggestion when a Millenium train shutdown the line between Mirana and Sutherland. Chris Minns is also all about locally built transportation while pointing a finger at the former Liberal government while forgetting it was his own party who outsourced the Waratah building to China rather than going with a locally built train from UGL which would have been the actual successor to the Tangara

    just take the current carriage but put a back to back row of flip up seats as the accessible section in middle of carriage and then make the doors MASSIVE.
    *I know not really possible but imagine a door than double the width would be hilarious to see*

    Also I hate to break it to you no matter how many doors you have people will always crowed around a certain door.
    Longitudenal seating wont help as double decks hold an extra 600 - 1200 passengers compared to a single deck train.
    Mixed train stock COULD work but improving the time table would solve a few issues.
    From what ive heard Tangaras will be a mix of waratah and tangara.

    Rolling stock is generally intended to have a lifespan of ~45 years with 2 major refits every ~15 years. The oldest Tangara trains will be reaching 45 years old in 2033.
    Now there’s a chance that the section of the inner west line between central and Strathfield or Homebush will be converted to metro operation as the T3 line has. If that happens; there won’t need to be as many regular EMU’s and could reduce and/or delay the demand for Tangara replacement.
    But the sooner they look into designing the Tangara replacement’s the better. And rather than another tranche or a further development of the Warratah’s; they should be the next evolution of design with the latest practical developments and standards in electric multiple units. I think they need to abandon the closed doors between cars and embrace having people standing between cars.
    As for idiots crowding the doors; there needs t9 be education and enforcement from guards, etc.

    Tangaras replaced Red Rattlers that were on the network for 60 years. While I was going to school, it took damn FOREVER to get the Tangaras to replace them. If we’re going to lose nice features like curved windows, I want the Tangaras to also last for 60 years, why not? We had to wait forever to get them in the first place.

    Some point between 1992 and 1997, the entire idea of skylight & curved ceiling glass became “impossible” or out of fashion. No logical reason though. Same thing happened after the 1996 London Underground stock (Jubilee line). The original complaint was about the air conditioning being too drafty, but diffuser strips were added in the first 12 months of Tangaras, so what’s the real reason? Cost? Millennium sets, Waratahs and OSCARs are so unambitious in this.

    • @markpusko2480

      The problem with the Tangara upper deck windows is the curve meant that passengers would be placed inside the danger zone of the overhead wires should a window become broken, or malicious acts of vandalism. The increased window size allowing more light & heat into the carriages created additional heat load problems for the air conditioning

  • @BrettMonet

    Yes, the new Melbourne trains in theory have a "dedicated bike section." In reality its in the middle carriages. The most crowded carriages. Anyone who has ever tried to take a bike on a train in rush hour knows its an absolute joke to use the most crowded carriages for the bikes.

    So... I think 3 doors would be right. keep the carriage length the same. the two outer doors should line up as per the double deckers and add a middle door. The single deckers should be trailers. keep the cabs double deck.

      @ollie2074 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      if they increase the doors they should definitely keep the outer two doors lined up in the same position with older stock like you said as this would also mean that platform screen doors would be possible later down the track.

    The distances in Sydney and capacity means we need double deck suburban or full upgrade to metro standards with 1hr standing journeys. There is a better way. First stop should be passenger behaviour. Don’t ride three or four stations in the damn doors during peak, and make everyone else thread through you to disembark. This happens all the time, and the busiest lines are the worst. I am looking at you lower north shore. More education, and dare I say it fines. Don’t ride in the damn doors. How about a stop, do not board illuminated sign three seconds before the doors close? Next stop would be a little infrastructure work. Modify the platforms and bridges to allow another 6in width and put all that on the stairs and passageways. If possible, lengthen the car and although I have heard bigger doors are a technical problem, let’s look at slightly longer carriages and bigger doors and vestibules. Last, consider that a double deck sydney train with walk through carriages would essentially be an alternate single double train.

  • @nashorn9745
    @nashorn9745 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    The AC is probably not going to change this system as stupid as it is is pretty much standard on new trains. The train you have invented actually already kind of exists in the form of the Siemens Desiro HC in Germany. The way you put on the doors makes no sense doors in the middle normally need gap fillers not ideal and the single deck car will always be faster loading even on the Desiro HC where the single deck car has smaller doors.

    So basically this video is just a rehash of ideas & theories from the mechanical branch & C.M.E. going back more than 50 years. Or previously publicised in books such as First Stop Central & study videos testing dwell times that can be found on YT. The reason Sydney had a combination of single & double deck consists (M & W sets) wasn't specifically due to a lack of double deck power cars. It was an evolutionary step in making all double deck consists. There were no double deck power cars worldwide in existence then. Only non motorised control cars. More people per train by incorporating double deck carriages made up for the inability to provide more (single deck) train services on a network that was (still is) at full capacity. It would be a very backwards step going back to a single deck fleet.

    • @Reaper1770

      We moved to double decks to solve overcrowding and its an easy way to add more seats. Cutting seating capacity for technicqlly quicker boarding is trivial since boarding takes less than a minute on busy station with a good guard

The fact that they are still running shows just how good they are. Yep, bad seating by todays standards and the window aircon isnt good but you go elsewhere and see what they have. Stop whinging when you dont know how good you have it! Tr Amtrak and Canada's Viarail & Vancouver trains- some are nice- but our old Tangara is still better!
