The difference is pretty minimal. The grigoras is supposed to by a front tuck with a half turn out of it, whereas the maaranen is a half twist straightaway into a back tuck. I personally think they should be worth the same since they are so similar
Thank you, I enjoyed every minute of this! It was great to see these acrobatic skills performed so fluidly and flawlessly. Especially appreciate the content and names from the 70's and 80's era (my era in the gym). I swoon at the sighting of a perfect valdez on beam. And the front walkover called Tinsica... I haven't heard that word in over 40 years. Loved this video so much.
@jovani2293 If you mean the back handspring into three layout stepouts then yes but you wouldn't get much for it because in the old code (I know in 1996 it was this way) three layout stepouts were considered an E element and there was a connection bonus. In the new code, you would only get credit for one layout stepout and no connection bonuses.
@QueenieQue The code makes no distinction between skills done from a stand and skills done out of a combination. It should be noted that by connecting a back handspring to a tuck back full (or any F or G skill), you would gain a .2 in connection bonus.
I've really learnt a lot about elite level gymanstics through your guides and about scoring, now I can watch routines and understand why athletes are scored the way they are not cry blasphemy everytime I see a low score for a routine, The new judging code is a step in the right direction after all and I'm waiting for an athlete to score 17. :-)
this will help me ALOT!!!!!im a ten yr. old gymnast but I learn how to do skills by watching other people preform them.I used 2 love beam but ever since last week im not 2 sure...I tried 2 do a switch leap, but I stradled and hit the middle of the beam.
I love the side backhandspring with the back hip circle! And lots of the other moves are so cool but I don't feel like they show up in USA girls' routines much anymore D: All i remember seeing is lots of wolf turns haha
It's been an F since the new code in 2006 because they needed to create a difference between a full-twisting tuck and full-twisting layout, which is a G.
There are 4 G skills, but three of them are dismounts. The full twisting layout and for dismounts they are: the Patterson ( double arabian), full twisting double tuck and full twisting double pike
Actually, she does it "piked" (its usually closer to tucked). the new COP does NOT list saltos to scales as one element - they just receive .1 in connection, and must be true saltos (as in, no more front aerials to scale, or onodi to scale)
Do you ever think there should be an un-connection bonus? lol just kidding, but some moves such as a back layout salto look like they're more difficult from standing than when they follow a flic flac.
Love the video! Nice to know the names of things that commentators sometimes throw in. The music is wonderful... what pieces did you use? The first one sounds so familiar but I can't quite place it!
@bunbacheso Nothing, it's just different terms for the same move. Some people like to call a handspring step-out a flic flac, though. Others make no distinction/
I thought that the Flic-Flac with 1/4 twist to a handstand was known as the "Miller" as it was Shannon Miller that first preformed it? Just a thought..
The Miller was a flic-flac with 1/4 turn to immediate 1/2 pirouette. However, the Miller has since lost its standing in the C.O.P because the flic with 1/4 turn and the 1/2 pirouette are now considered two separate skills, as opposed to one continuous skill; much like what happened to Nastia Liukin's eponymous free-walkover to scale skill in 2008. The downgrade occurred because the the 1/2 is performed after her hands make contact with the beam. Also, Shannon Miller was really the only gymnast to perform this skill in the intended manner. Dominique Moceanu, for example, would perform the Miller, though hers was not as fluid, polished, or as quickly connected as Shannon Miller's.
I doubt it, I've seen a beautiful gainer onodi. I believe an aerial onodi would be an arabian layout stepout like they used to do on floor in the 70's.
The difference is pretty minimal. The grigoras is supposed to by a front tuck with a half turn out of it, whereas the maaranen is a half twist straightaway into a back tuck. I personally think they should be worth the same since they are so similar

SOOOOOO glad you posted this I have been searching for the names of those moves for centuries!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YOU are a LIFE SAVER!!!!
Thanks for this! So helpful to have these examples, and to see elements side-by-side. Thanks!!

Thanks for putting Koko's Onodi as an example. I love the way she does her Onodi!
No matter how much I look at it, the Teza ( 3:29 ) will never cease to amaze me.
i really like the worley, it looks really nice and different
I believe that in the front with a half, you twist after the flip, but in the back with a half, you twist before the flip.
Where do you get all these wonderful pieces of music for your montages.
thanks for your guides, I learned a lot from them !
and also from your routine guide, I finally understand the UB scores ^^
A whipback is done on floor. Essentially it's the same move, but the technique is somewhat different.
great editing, I learned a lot
@missmouse35 Changes in the 2009-2012 FIG Code of Points meant that the skill is no longer considered as an appropriate skill.
@bunbacheso I think handspring can mean both forwards or back but flic flacs normally mean back.
thats amazing work ! where did you get these videos ? Answer please
Why is nobody doing the Kochetkova anymore? It's such a cool skill when performed correctly, especially by the originator.
The Rulfova and the Teza just scare me every time. I hate to think what happens if the gymnast misses. Great skills - but very dangerous.
I noticed the Kolesnikova in this video did not have the 1/2 turn after Pavlova's hands were placed. Is the 1/2 turn required in the skill?
I can make a dismount one and some other event ones, they take a while to do though as I have to try and track down some of the obscure moves :)
i luv ur gymnastics guides
just wait until Biles throws double double dismount on beam
cts sam you can predict the future 😯
she did
how’d you know 6 years earlier-
This is hilarious! 🤣
Wow
this is great!! could you make one for the jumps/turns etc?
It says Vera Cerna not Vera Caslavska
i like that! it looks really pretty and like it should be in the code
It's been an F since the new code in 2006 because they needed to create a difference between a full-twisting tuck and full-twisting layout, which is a G.
what's the second song?
I don't understand how one-armed walkovers versus two armed walkovers can be valued the same. It's harder to keep your balance on just one arm.
@MrJST94
little correction,
she only did it before Onodi did it :$.
I wonder why gymnasts don't compete the Maaranen or Produnova (on beam) more often... I've never seen that done in a competition before.
Simone Biles does a Maaranen and Chellsie Memmel used to compete a Produnova.
Beautiful music. Awesome vid.
Beautiful Mostepanova fan!! I guess you're aware of the Garrison layout performed at the AYOF by Sasada. It's a G. Amazing!!
I love the Yurchenko loop and the Teza but I don't think I've ever seen them done cleanly :(
The skill is named after her in the code of points but the FIG recognizes the skill as a combonation
wooooh.. nice!
what's the name of the gymnast who preforms a back walkover with support on one arm?
what's the difference between the front tuck salto with a half twist and the jump half twist back salto? they look exactly the same
Is there a reason there's no standing full? Is there no difference between that and the tucked back-salto performed here by Nistor?
3.54, 5.308 looks fantastic!! I luv it but hey, I would like to know those songs?? Tell meeeee
There are 4 G skills, but three of them are dismounts. The full twisting layout and for dismounts they are: the Patterson ( double arabian), full twisting double tuck and full twisting double pike
Mounts:ergeg, layout full
that was awesome..any chance you could do dismounts and other events?
@Mrmartinnico LOL, salto and somi are actually from one word, somersault!! They refer to the same thing :-)
Actually, she does it "piked" (its usually closer to tucked). the new COP does NOT list saltos to scales as one element - they just receive .1 in connection, and must be true saltos (as in, no more front aerials to scale, or onodi to scale)
anyone know why full-twisting back pike salto is not in the code? I know Amy Chow used to do it.
Does anyone know the name of the second tune? It's so music box .... sounds like something that one would use for a ballet.
what about the 3/4 turn to yurchenko svetlana does that same with ykaterina lobyunuyk
awesome!!!! also, what's the music?
Is it possible to do a front flip with a full twist on beam?
ummm what video is the first skill performed by oksana omelianchik from? could have sworn id seen every video she's in...
@Manutdcailin Does that mean that we'll no longer see the skills performed?
Can you remake montages of your favorite beam workers, vault, etc again? Why did they become removed?
what is the difference between a flic flac and a handspring?
It is an instrumental version of the duet from the opera Lakme.
what is the sing called? i love i. ive herd it before and i know it's originally classical.
what would a back with a full be
Do you ever think there should be an un-connection bonus? lol just kidding, but some moves such as a back layout salto look like they're more difficult from standing than when they follow a flic flac.
whats the first song again? i know its a remix version of it. do you know what it's called?
Just wondering, is the onodi to tic toc in the code? I do remember seeing someone do it once.
this may be stupid, but why is it more difficult to take off from two feet than from one?
There was a move performed by shushunova which looked like an aerial cartwheel swing down. Is it in the code? It's in 0:59 in this video v=pL6vSLtxeRw
Love the video! Nice to know the names of things that commentators sometimes throw in. The music is wonderful... what pieces did you use? The first one sounds so familiar but I can't quite place it!
what's the second song called? it's so pretty
@bunbacheso Nothing, it's just different terms for the same move. Some people like to call a handspring step-out a flic flac, though. Others make no distinction/
seriously what is the name of the song cause i really want to use this as my floor music?
is it possible to do an aerial onodi?
just wondering..
Do you plan to remake this for 2010, or will you just put the changes in the information box?
can you please upload a tumbling pass guide ?
I'm confused about 5.611 and 5.514. What's the difference?
what happened to stephthemagicdragon?
hi where do you get to read the code of points? can you send me a link or something? thanks!
what is the name of the first song?
I miss the old days
the tuck side salto is called side summi
It's on the FIG website.
What's the music?
is zhang xia deng linlin's coach?
May I request an UB pirouettes montage?
I thought that the Flic-Flac with 1/4 twist to a handstand was known as the "Miller" as it was Shannon Miller that first preformed it? Just a thought..

B W I am curious however... When "The Miller" was part of the C.O.P. what grade did it carry for difficulty?
isn't the one at 2:38 an an onodi?
the pike side salto was actually performed by proskurina, not koval yo :).
3:28 I kid yall not, the words, "OOOOO SHIT!" Came out of my mouth instantly... O.O How on earth did that girl do that! Elvire Teza that is
why didnt u hav that cool airbesk one footed thing that nastia does?
Not all the skills are in this video, can it be?
garrison roll, garrison, gainer layout step out, gainer flic, chen flic, korbut flic, front toss, back tuck, gainer tuck
can you tell me the time?
0:43 i thought that a tinsica was a cartwheel but you end like a front walkover
Well done!
Yeah, a barani is a front with a half, or a no handed round off, same thing.
Where's the Liukin and Memmel?
btw, I cant find the aerial cartwheel..? XD
I doubt it, I've seen a beautiful gainer onodi. I believe an aerial onodi would be an arabian layout stepout like they used to do on floor in the 70's.
imagine…
flic flac?! you mean back handspring?
actually its an F. the layout is a G, so I wonder what they would put pike as (my guess is F)
@Hasoginy
Still Water by Maksim Mrvica
My account got deleted :( I'm trying to get my old videos back up, I will probably remake my favourites montages again, they need updating :)
You can download it for free from the FIG homepage.
@bbhouk1 You're right!! Thats not worth that much it should be an A or TA!
