Worked for me! Also I’m a longtime Amon Amarth fan and didn’t like Great Heathen Army on first listen but damn I got hooked on the second half of the album and then it all came together. As a comparison, I didn’t like Berserker at all.

I am a big Megadeth fan, but this last one is BOOOOORING. I think Super Collider is better. The last album was awesome, but I can't get into this one. It might also be the production; they need a less clean mix. Thats just me though, maybe a few more listens will change my mind.

I usually hate worst albums lists. Those that do that are usually people who don't know enough about music to say anything interesting. So they just bash. But you guys do all sorts of lists : best albums, most underrated, what we missed, etc. And you do focus on the fact that these are disappointing albums; albums for which you had great expectations. There's a huge difference between that and just bashing. The WHVT HVPPVNVD joke was hilarious. Keep up the good work guys!

Do you really need to know about music theory and time signatures and scales to understand music? I mean we all have ears, therefore we can have opinions. Of course it's always interesting listening to people who know about metal and can cite the creative riffs and writing from members of different periods or whatever, but for example, I don't think Megadeth has put anything memorable out in a long time. I'll never know how to play guitar at good as Dave, but I don't need to to understand how to play and write music to know their new shit is boring, generic, and nothing we haven't heard before

Nice video, guys! I liked so much that you mentioned the strong and the weak points of those albums instead of just bashing them. Perfect balance. My most disappointing 2022 album has to go, unfortunetaly, to Deathspell Omega - The Long Defeat. It's not bad, it's ok, a few solid tracks, some good moments, but nothing special. I was expecting something as creative and unique as their previous material and it kind of sounds like a b-side album from Mgła. And I love Mgła, but you get the point. THANK YOU!
For calling out Megadeth on their super mediocre new album. I CANNOT understand the universal acclaim they get for such a terrible album - down among The World Needs A Hero, 13, and The System Has Failed (the "pop" songs, not Kick the Chair) imo.
-The fast track are cheesy 80s speed metal (and then Metallica tried the same with Hit the.. I mean, Lux Æterna).
Célebutante was one of the 3 "good" songs to me, and I'll probably never put it on again, despite the change-up before the 2nd minute mark. They did it better on Headcrusher (2009) already, let alone the 1985-1992 albums. And the new "speed metal" songs have hardly any harmonies or new licks.
-Plenty of non-aggressive 160-180 bpm thrash (Title Track, Life in Hell, Junkie, Killing Time, Soldier On (at least it had lead guitar in the chorus), Mission to Mars)
-cheesy 'poppy' vocal lines choruses (Life In Hell, Killing Time, Mission to Mars (those lyrics, YUCK!!), Police Truck, This Planet's On FIre)
..not much different from Public Enemy no 1, Something That I'm Not, Blessed Be The Dead, let alone all the songs in 1985-1994.
You wouldn't see anyone raving if a new band released the same album. Where are the twin riffs? Where is the memorable 20+ second solo? The memorable bass line? The 'caught you off-guard' tempo change like Hangar 18 outro, Endgame outro, Wake Up Dead outro etc (only Célebutante really tried)?

  • @demonryucg

Disagree with Stabbing Westward but that's probably because I can overlook the lyrics, Chris Hall has always been this cringe from the beginning. Even though I gave it a B+, what was more disappointing was after all the delays a bunch of the songs were re-used from the 2020 EP. I wanted more new after an almost two year gap, and they have to have even more written. For most disappointing for me, maybe Lost Society? They've already been pivoting from their strong retro thrash in their earlier days towards more modern metal but this one was just boring.

Funny thing is, out of the several bands I regularly enjoy on this list, meaning past albums, I haven't checked any of these out yet. I think I have the Behemoth one on vinyl but I can't recall if I ever spun it or just forgot it. The other including AA I haven't even gotten to yet. As there were so many other great albums I'm still discovering having sort of spaced on half the year and only recently got back to checking out new stuff. So I am a bit behind on 20222. Guess I'm not missing much as there were tons of great underground and returning bands that didn't disappoint that I am still stoked on.

Actually, it's pretty cool that Celestial Season even got a mention (the previous album 'The Secret Teachings' from 2020 was a better album but for 2022, I would say 'Mysterium' is an overall decent release). Been a fan of Celestial Season since the summer of 1997 when my brother bought 'Solar Lovers' cd at a local record store. That album blew us away with the excellent stringed arrangements over the depressive death-doom metal sound. I ordered 'Forever Scarlett Passion' towards the end of 1998 and absolutely loved it as well. Unfortunately they had become a stoner-rock band by that time (and I figured they were done) but it's really surprising to see them return to their original death-doom approach in these strange modern times. I guess it depends on your perspective of drab...if a band is going for a depressive atmosphere, then drab may be considered a good thing (especially in the death-doom genre). But like I said, it was great just to see an overlooked and somewhat obscure band like Celestial Season to get some attention.

Ooof, I was totally on board until you did Stabbing Westward dirty lol. Man that is one of my absolute favorites of the year. Yeah the lyrics can be simplistic and even cringe at times, but they kind of always were. He's not the most poetic or deep writer. But for being away for like 18 years and then dropping a record of this caliber totally blew me away. Like they never missed a step. I feel that should be taken into consideration, because personally I can't think of too many artists who can do that and do it well.
I personally enjoyed the Ibaraki, but I completely agree regarding how it was marketed. I was fully expecting a savage black metal ripper, and there was hardly any BM to be found. However, because the record was still good I let that little mishap slide.
The Dark Funeral and Behemoth albums were certainly not the best, but far from the worst. The behemoth was a big step up from the shitshow of the "I loved you" album. Dark Funeral was safe for sure, but still elite to me. They are incapable of putting out a "bad" record if you ask me. So it isn't my AOTY by any stretch, but definitely no slouch of a record!

I saw Amon Amarth on the 18th of December at the LA Forum and they did great their sound as you said was tight it was super fun. However not EVEN CLOSE to how badass they used to sound on their older Albums. All their new songs were definitely watered down and more tame. The crowed was receptive though and the show was still fun but when they played Destroyer of the Universe the place went insane it’s one of their older songs and its a banger, I can only imagine if they played more of their older stuff like Risen from the Sea. Would’ve went so hard.

I don't know some of the picks, but ones I do, I agree with all of these picks. A lot of these legacy metal acts are very hit or miss, mostly miss though. It's just hard to care about a lot of these older bands who used to be controversial or bad ass and now they're just old, don't sound as good, very generic, or just not memorable. Amon Amarth has been very generic and formulaic since like 2010. A band like Lamb of God unfortunately has fallen into this as well. I still like LOG and will fuck with em until I die, I think they've only gotten better live with age and their shows are always sick, but their albums since like Wrath or Resolution have just all sounded the same. For a band who was always doing something new and heavy, their sound has devolved into to just unmemorable monotony. Their production sounds legit the same for their last two albums, I can't even tell them apart

I haven't listened to most of these except Megadeth, Ibaraki and The Gathering, and I can see where you're coming from with the last two. Ibaraki is a lot better labeled as a progressive metal album than a black metal album. In complete agreement that Gerard Way should've done vocals for the entire album. I knew he was talented (delusional MCR fandom aside) but he blew me away with how fitting his vocals actually were.
Not much to say about the Gathering. Your critiques are definitely valid, but they just didn't bother me near as much. I don't really go into an album looking for cohesiveness or any other traits. I just go off of whether I like it or not.
I gotta question what you're talking about with the Megadeth album. I understand not liking it, but you characterized the album as them desperate to prove they've still got it, but I don't think that's ever been in question at any point. I can count their true duds on one hand. I don't like TSTDATD as much as Dystopia, but it's more than fine for a band that's been around almost 40 years, and quite a few of the songs on the record are in regular rotation for me.

Hard disagree on Celestial Season. I mean, their first two albums are good, but what they've done on The Secret Teachings and the two Mysterium albums is absolutely their finest work yet IMO. @@forgemastermetal I mean their albums before The Secret Teachings are inferior. I look at it as a band that have grown up and seen the world, who have experienced LIFE, and have composed songs expressing all of it. Like the song "Endgame" on Mysterium I - that song, to me, feels like it carries the weight of a lifetime: it's lovely, joyous, and sad, and mournful, and whatever else. Maybe I was just in the right frame of mind to appreciate both I and II for those reasons . Either way, I'm all over Mysterium III when they eventually release it.

One of my most disappointing listens from this past year had to be Lorna Shore's new record--a controversial opinion, yet not without reason. The songs wash, rinse and repeat the same formula again and again and again and AGAIN to the point that when I got to the Pain Remains songs at the end, I felt exhausted. That album shouldn't have been an hour long, and to be honest, the Pain Remains suite felt... cheesy and overblown to me, not emotional like a lot of reaction channels were saying it was like.

Then the following songs from the EP came out. Then followed the album and I was exhausted. Nothing absolutely sticks out to me. That’s what happened to me with Carnifex when World War X came out. Just lost interest. Kind of why I’m sticking with Shadow of Intent and Fit for an Autopsy at the moment.

I agree with Ibaraki. There are some decent riffs and tracks; and you don't hear many 7-strings or Japanese elements in black metal, so that was cool. The main thing holding it back is the vocals. Matt's singing fits, but I wish Ihsahn would've done the screaming because Matt's screams don't fit well. The vocal production isn't as powerful as I'd like: for example, in the first single, the chorus starts with a bare melody but adds harmonies as the song progresses. It's a fine idea, but the first chorus sounded so weak that I thought it was a demo. The vocals are trying to cut through a wall of guitars, bass, drums, and keys, and it sounds like they aren't even doubled. I also hate the art direction. It looks as if they slapped it together in five minutes, the text and logo don't mesh well with the dull, hideous visuals, and the logo looks like it was made in MS Paint. Overall, I'd give it a 7/10, it was cool, but it could've been better.

*Most Overhyped:* Albums that i think are good but personally i don't think they deserve such praise.
*Most Disappointing:* Albums that i anticipated and ended up letting me down.
*Worst Of The Worst:* Self explanatory
With that out of the way, let's get started:
    Most Overhyped Albums Of 2022:
    5) Wilderun - Epigone
    4) Bloodbath - Survival Of The Sickest
    3) Undeath - It's Time... To Rise From The Grave
    2) Megadeth - The Sick, The Dead And The Dying
    1) Lorna Shore - Pain Remains
    Most Disappointing Albums Of 2022:
    5) Dark Funeral - We Are The Apocalypse
    4) Amon Amarth - The Great Heathen Army
    3) Candlemass - Sweet Evil Sun
    2) Kreator - Hate Uber Alles
    1) Behemoth - Opvs Contra Natvram
    The Worst Of The Worst:
    5) Motionless In White - Scoring The End Of The World
    4) Parkway Drive - Darker Still
    3) Architects - Classic Symptoms Of A Broken Spirit
    2) Rings Of Saturn - S/T

Kreator's new album was really disappointing...Amon Amarth has been a disappointment since the late 2000's, they hit their peak around With Oden at Our Side. I prefer Behemoth's earlier material like Satanica and Zos Kia Cultus although The Satanist was pinnacle, and their best album from the previous 10 years or so.
As I get older (I am 52) I find that many bands that have been around for a while, 15 - 20 years or more are absolutely sounding uninspired and using the same formula album after album - it gets tiresome.
