Disillusion was my second favorite progressive metal album of the year (Wilderun Epigone just beating it out for me). Still so happy they are getting some love it's totally deserved. So stoked In The Woods is getting some love as well. That album has grabbed me and hasn't let go yet... listening to it multiple times a week at the moment and it found its way into my top five of the year as well. Can't say enough about Woe from An Abstract Illusion, and it's easily my AOTY. Just please listen if you haven't... it's too good to ignore. The only major omission I would point out is Kardashev - Liminal Rite. That was my AOTY until Woe kicked the doors down and stole the crown lol.
Nice list guys, and I suppose here is an opportunity to post mine. I'm still catching up on albums for the end of the year, but as of now, here are my top 20 metal albums of 2022. Aeviterne - The Ailing Facade An Abstract Illusion - Woe Aronious - Irkalla Artificial Brain - Artificial Brain Ashenspire - Hostile Architecture Bekor Qilish - Throes of Death From The Dreamed Nihilism Blut aus Nord - Disharmonium: Undreamable Abysses Dream Unending - Songs of Salvation Grima - Frostbitten Hath - All That Was Promised Hissing - Hypervirulence Architecture Imperial Triumphant - Spirit of Ecstacy Inanimate Existence - The Masquerade Innumerable Forms - Philosophical Collapse Krallice - Crystalline Exhaustion Soul-Glo - Diaspora Problems Ultha - All That Has Never Been True Wake - Thought Form Descent White Ward - False Light WORM - Bluenothing
Great list. I agree with An Abstract Illusion as AOTY. I also have 5 of your choices repeating. But nothing tops WOE. Amorphis and Persefone are also worth the time
I was actually so glad that In the Woods... and Blind Guardian learnt from their recent feedback and perfectly constructed what their fans wanted! Also, here's my top 10 (no order) that a lot of folk haven't heard: Bootes Void - C.O.L.D. Vorga - Striving Toward Oblivion Ripped to Shreds - Jubian Phobophilic - Enveloping Absurdity Gutvoid - Durance of Lightless Horizons Tzompantli - Tlazcaltiliztli Daeva - Through Sheer Will And Black Magix Ellende - Ellenbogengesellschaft Vorbid - A Swan by the Edge Misþyrming - Með hamri A lot of fantastic releases this year but some of these actually pulled me into a vortex of nonstop headbanging vibe.
Totally on board with Sigh, An Abstract Illusion and Hath. My top 5 (as in the 5 most enjoyable metalreleases) further includes Septic Flesh and Imperial Triumphant. Yours is overall a nice list though. Keep up the good work guys.
nice video, really great quality for a small chanel My #1 is also Woe, and "Ash in the Realms of Stone Icons" and "Tiktaalika" are also great albums that were not mentioned
My top 10 this year (in no particular order): Fer de Lance - The Hyperborean The Otolith - Folium Limina Sigh - Shiki Hammers of Misfortune - Overtaker Immolation - Acts of God The Chasm - The Scars of a Lost Reflective Shadow Disillusion - Ayam Hath - All That Was Promised In The Woods - Diversum Ashenspire - Hostile Architecture
While there were a heck load of albums I greatly enjoyed this year, there are 3 albums that blew me away to a point where they might even land in my top 20 fav metal albums of all time. And heck, all three were included in this vid. Disillusion - Ayam An Abstract Illusion - Woe Fallujah - Empyrean Overall a really amazing year for metal.
HATH is one of my favourite albums of last year. Another one is WHITE WARD ‘false light’ - absolute beauty. I love sax and trumpet in metal. Must be my favourite discovery of 2022. Reminds me of PAN-THY-MONIUM (rip)
Awesome list. The Sigh and Hath albums are so good. Here are my top ten favorite metal albums of 2022. 1. Static Dress - Rouge Carpet Disaster (post-hardcore/emo pop/metalcore) 2. Nechochwen - Kanawha Black (blackened folk metal/progressive rock/death metal) 3. Marrasmieli - Martaiden mailta (atmospheric pagan black metal) 4. Brutus - Unison Life (post-hardcore/math rock/post-metal) 5. Mossgiver - The Song Among Branches (atmospheric black metal) 6. Blackbraid - Blackbraid I (atmospheric black metal) 7. Darko US - Oni (progressive deathcore/nu metalcore/mathcore) 8. White Ward - False Light (avant-garde post-black metal) 9. The Callous Daoboys - Celebrity Therapist (mathcore/post-hardcore/pop punk) 10. Wormrot - Hiss (grindcore)
Darko's Oni is rank 1 for me by far. Everything else I've heard in 2022 makes me go "Oh, this is some good metal, made by human beings". But when I listen to Darko it's just a level above.
Top 10 2022: Top 3 in order: 1. Rolo Tomassi - Where myth becomes memory 2. An abstract illusion - Woe 3. Allegaeon - DAMNUM Remaining 7 are in no particular order: 4. Fallujah - empyrean 5. Meshuggah - immutable 6. Sikasa - Matter Earth 7. Neurotic Machinery - A loathsome Aberration 8. Miss May I - Curse of existence 9. Xaon - The Lethean 10. Lamb of God - Omens
Stuff I had on repeat this year in chronological order of release (I hope): Cult of Luna - The Long Road North [AOTY] (cannot wait for the Cult of Luna + Russian Circles tour next year) Zeal & Ardor - Zeal & Ardor (one of the best concerts I went to this year!) Sylvaine - Nova Absent in Body - Plague God Novarupta - Carrion Movements White Ward - False Light Final Light - Final Light Panzerfaust - The Suns of Perdition, Chapter III: The Astral Drain Russian Circles - Gnosis Blackbraid - Blackbraid I A few honorable mentions: Wiegedood - There's Always Blood At The End Of The Road Vorga - Striving Toward Oblivion Devil Master - Ecstasies Of Never Ending Night An Abstract Illusion - Woe Gaerea - Mirage + a lot, lot more I need to start digging into Shiki by Sigh. Somehow I missed it (or avoided it?).
Thank you guys for the awesome work you do. I cannot thank you enough for introducing An Abstract Illusion, this made my year. 2021 and 2022... man so much good metal music has been produced, it's hard to chose, honestly. But still, my top ten for 2022 would be: Greylotus - Dawnfall An Abstract Illusion - Woe Fallujah - Empyrean Vanaheim - Een Verloren Verhaal Spire of Lazarus - Soaked in the Sands Panzerfaust - The Suns of Perdition - Chapter III: The Astral Drain Shadow of Intent - Elegy White Ward - False Light Nighted - Absence Cult of Luna - The Long Road North
I have to say of all the metal channels I follow my tastes seem to most align with that of your own. Can always rely on this channel to send me in the right direction to find new albums that are right up my ally. Some of my favorites of the year have been Allageon, and Oceans of Slumbers new albums. My daughter is 4 and she loves singing along in the car to the new oceans of slumber album. It was the soundtrack to our family vacation to myrtle beach this year. It's not as heavy as if like but father daughter bonding puts it to the top of my list of favorite albums this year!!!
Bout to go listen to In the Woods now. Definitely sold me on that one. I completely agree with Abstract Illusion (thanks for putting that on my radar awhile back), Sigh, and especially Hath!!! I can’t even put into words why they’re so good but certain parts of that album are pure perfection
Since you asked, here’s my death metal Top 15 (alphabetically because ranking is too difficult): 1. Allegaeon - Damnum 2. An Abstract Illusion - Woe 3. Becoming the Archetype- Children of the Great Extinction 4. Catalyst - A Different Painting for a New World 5. Decapitated - Cancer Culture 6. Fallujah - Empyrean 7. Greylotus - Dawnfall 8. Hypermass - Empyrean 9. Ingested - Ashes Lie Still 10. Kardashev - Liminal Rite 11. Obsidious - Iconic 12. Psycroptic - Divine Counsel 13. Soilwork - Övergivenheten 14. Spire of Lazarus - Soaked In The Sands 15. Xaon - The Lethean
My top 10 metal albums of 2022: Wormrot-Hiss (kickass grindcore from Singapore) Watain-The Agony and Ecstasy of Watain (evil black metal from Sweden) Rammstein-Zeit Megadeth-The Sick, The Dying... and the Dead!! Municipal Waste-Electrified Brain Immolation-Acts of God (I saw them a month ago with Cannibal Corpse) Crowbar-Zero and Below Decapitated-Cancer Culture Septicflesh-Modern Primitive GWAR-The New Dark Ages
Great List. I have to check Hath and Sigh. My top albums would be: 1. Amorphis - Halo 2. An Abstract Illusion - Woe 3. Porcupine Tree - Closure Continuation 4. Drudkh - All Belong to the Night 5. Et Moriemur - Tamashii No Yama 6. Saor - Origins 7. Revocation - Netherheaven 8. Rammstein Zeit 9. Vorga - Striving towards Oblivion 10. Blind Guardian - The God Machine Some honorables: Septicflesh - Modern Primitive Ryo Okumoto - The Myth of the Mostrophus Darkest Era - Wither on the Vine Marrasmieli - Martaiden Mailta Temple of Void - Summoning the Slayer Aeternam - Heir of the Rising Sun Te Ruki - Marako Te Ruki Bloodywood - Rakshak Stangarigel - Na Severe Srdca Hällas - Isle of Wisdom Immolation - Acts of God Blut aus Nord - Disharmonium Deathspell Omega - The Long Defeat
An Abstract Illusion - Woe, is on the top of my list as well. First part of the album sounds like a modern version of early Opeth (still life era), while the second part has many more influences, with a prevalent While Heaven Wept sound (of empires forlorn era). What an album!
My top 10: 1. Visions Of Atlantis - Pirates 2. The Halo Effect - Days Of The Lost 3. Brymir - Voices In The Sky 4. An Abstract Illusion - Woe 5. Defacing God - The Resurrection Of Lilith 6. Soilwork - Övergivenheten 7. White Ward - False Light 8. Oceans Of Slumber - Starlight And Ash 9. Ibaraki - Rashomon 10. Avantasia - A Paranormal Evening with the Moonflower Society
Not giving away my list because I'm still catching up on some albums I missed, but there are a couple hardcore albums from this year that I absolutely loved. Comeback Kid's Heavy Steps and Dead Cross's II for example.
My top picks are: 1: Zeal and Ardor - Zeal and Ardor. 2: An Abstract Illusion - Woe. 3: Peth - Merchant of Death. 4: Aenaeon - Mnemosyne. 5: Still undecided…10,000 Years - III so far…
Y’all might enjoy The Devils of Louden released this year. Fun, heavy, neoclassical Death metal. Haven’t seen many people talk about them. Another might be Soreption- Jord. I’m not the biggest DM fan but these guys have some groovy/heavy yet technical approach. Both near the top of my 2023 DM list!
Top 10 of the year for me 10 Devin Townsend-Lightwork 9 Author and Punisher-Krüller 8 Venom Prison-Erebos 7 Imperial Triumphant-Spirit of Ecstasy 6 The Chasm-Scars of a Lost Reflective World 5 Blut Aus Nord-Disharmonium 4 Voivod-Synchro Anarchy 3 Shape of Despair-Return to the Void 2 Negative Plane-The Pact 1 Dream Unening-Song of Salvation
Hey, your taste is very often similar to mine, so it's really fun to watch your toplist! All those gems like catchy Soilwork, big Disillusion, backtotrashy Blind Guardian. Maybe I also miss Wilderun a little ;-) Thank you for all those great Reviews this year!! I discovered AnAbstractIllusion because of you! My celebrated Album Number 2 after Soilwork is Stormruler. In my opinion it is one of the underrated Albums this year! Now I have to check InTheWoods! Cheers!
My top 10! 1. Aeternam - Heir Of The Rising Sun 2. The Halo Effect - Days Of The Lost 3. Blackbraid - Blackbraid I 4. Marrasmieli - Martaiden Mailta 5. Hath - All That Was Promised 6. Wormrot - Hiss 7. The Otolith - Folium Limina 8. An Abstract Illusion - WOE 9. Septicflesh - Modern Primitive 10. White Ward - False Light
Thanks guys for an awesome year's content and shining a light on In The Woods - some how I missed it's release. Top metal album for me this year is ARÐ - Take Up My Bones - monastic/Northumbrian doom which was released way back in February, followed by Disillussion, Messa - Close, Remina - Strata and Imha Tarikat - Hearts Unchained At War With Reason
I am enjoying your channel, keep it up. I am all over the place as usual, but here are my tops of 2022. An Abstract Illusion - Woe Hath - All That Was Promised Gaerea - Mirage Celeste - Assassine(s) Rolo Tomassi - Where Myth Becomes Memory Dorment Ordeal - The Grand Scheme of Things Cult of Luna - The Long Road North Immolation - Acts of God Misþyrming - Með hamri Spectral Wound - A Diabolic Thirst Devenial Verdict - Ash Blind Nihility - Beyone human Concepts
My top 10: Lilith's Revenge - Children From Eden An Abstract Illusion - Woe Allegaeon - Damnum Skid Row - The Gang's All Here Exocrine - The Hybrid Suns The Halo Effect - Days of The Lost Fit For An Autopsy - Oh What the Future Holds Brymir - Voices In The Sky Lorna Shore - The Pain Remains Lamb of God - Omen
Great list as always! Woe is definitely high on my list for AOTY, although I have to admit Lorna Shore's release is also amazing. I also had a lot of fun with Vorga's album Striving Toward Oblivion. Awesome atmospheric black metal
Great list! My picks for 2022 are: Meshuggah - Immutable Animals as Leaders - Perrhesia Fallujah - Empyrean I Built the Sky - The quiet place away Autonoesis - Moon of foul magics Lamb of God - Omens Lorna Shore - Pain remains Zeal & Ardor - S/T
Woe is obviously my no1 but dayum… I forgot about Hath. What an album. When it first came out I was smashing it.. good picks guys. Awesome 👏 Thanks for all the music this year 🔥🔥
Couple of surprises here, especially In The Woods. I like Abstract Illusion too - may be not as much as u but I jam it quite often. Here are few of my favorites: Messa - "Close" Trhä - "tálcunnana dëhajma tun dejl bënatsë..." Eric Wagner - "In The Lonely Light Of Mourning" Chat Pile - "God's Country Devil Master -"Ecstasies Of Never Ending Night
Great picks guys, here's my top 10. 10. Druid Lord - Relics of the Dead 9. Blackbraid - Blackbraid I 8. Ripped to Shreds - Jubian 7. Conjurer - Pathos 6. Grafvitnir - Tunes of Sitra Ahra 5. Vorga - Striving Toward Oblivion 4. Immolation - Acts of God 3. Temple of Void - Summoning the Slayer 2. Hath - All that was Promised 1. Allegaeon - Damnum
Heaps of crossover with mine. Great to finally see. My top 20 1. An Abstract Illusion - Woe (progressive death metal) 2. Drift into Black - Earthtorn (progressive doom metal) 3. Mist of Misery - Severance (symphonic black metal) 4. Ancient Settlers - Our Last Eclipse (melodic death metal) 5. Shadow of Intent - Elegy (symphonic deathcore) 6. Disillusion - Ayam (progressive metal) 7. Ash of Ashes - Traces (folk metal/melodeath) 8. Ibaraki - Rashomon (progressive metal) 9. Northlane - Obsidian (melodic metalcore) 10. In the Woods - Diversum (progressive rock/metal) 11. Machine Head - Of Kingdom And Crown (groove metal) 12. Invictus - Unstoppable (melodic death metal/ groove metal) 13. Saor - Origins (melodic black metal) 14. Fit For An Autopsy - Oh What the Future Holds (melodic deathcore) 15. Brymir - Voices in the Sky (folk metal/melodeath) 16. Tersivel - To the Orphic Void (progressive groove metal) 17. Arch Enemy - Deceivers (melodic death metal) 18. Rammstein - Zeit (melodic industrial metal) 19. Kardashev - Liminal Rite (atmospheric black metal) 20. Illvilja - Endless Rivers (synth black metal)
Yep. I seem to like the same stuff as you two. Interesting, inspired metal that’s got hooks, different sounds and passages, song variety. The memorable stuff
Fantastic picks. In fact, this video encouraged me to go back and revisit An Abstract Illusion, and holy shit! I'm glad I did. I kinda sorta made a half-assed attempt at it a couple months ago and i'm ashamed to admit (now) that I wasn't really feeling it and stopped about 1/3 the way through. Today I sat down and really listened deeply, all the way through, and I'm absolutely blown away. This instantly rocketed up to my top 10, maybe even top 5. Just an absolute triumph of a record - I just ordered the CD. Even the artwork is magnificent. so, thank you for that suggestion! I also really dug the Blind Guardian and Sigh albums. In my opinion, both of those were some of the best records they have each released in MANY years (possibly even decades, at least in GB's case) Now I need to go and check out the M. Romeo, Hangman's Chair, and Disillusion... The rest of my Top 5 looks something like this: BAD OMENS - The Death of Peace of Mind NORDJEVEL - Gnavhòl ROLO TOMASSI - Where Myth Becomes Memory RAMMSTEIN - Zeit
Fantastic list, Forgemasters! As of this moment, my top ten (based on level of obsession lol): 10. Undeath 9. Blackbraid 8. Strychnos 7. Temple of Void 6. Faetooth 5. Revocation 4. Devenial Verdict 3. Wilderun 2. An Abstract Illusion 1. Wake \m/@@\m/
Great list guys. I’ve been watching a lot of 2022 top metal reviews on TH-cam and you guys are one of the best. Great list of songs. Here’s my top 10: 1. Aeternam - Heir of the Rising Sun 2. Shadow of Intent - Elegy 3. Disillusion - Ayam 4. Blind Guardian - The God Machine 5. Soilwork - Overgivenheten 6. Startovarius - Survive 7. Sakis Tolis - Among the Fires of Hell 8. Ghost - Impera 9. Civil War - Invaders 10. Praise the Sun - The Proffer of Light
I'm more of a Prog/Power/NWBHM guy. My top 5 Judicator - The Majesty of Decay Doublegeddon - Geddon Dangerous Ironflame - Where Madness Dwells Avantasia - Moonflower Society Spell - Tragic Magic EP: Dark Forest - Ridge and Furrow
Yes! I'm really glad to see the Sigh album on your list, A+ album. For me I do not have any good objective metrics to quantify what my "favorite" releases are but some I really enjoyed are listed below in no particular order. * Devin Townsend - Lightwork * Deathwhite - Grey Everlasting * Nechochwen - Kanawha Black * Zeal & Ardor - (Self titled) * Phantom Spell - Immortal's Requiem * The Halo Effect - Days of the Lost * Soilwork - Övergivenheten * Somali Yacht Club - The Space * Marrasimeli - Martaiden mailta (I need to put it on some radars, amazing folk BM, I haven't been much into BM this year, but if I did, this would be on that list).
Frayle - Skin & Sorrow Faetooth - Remnants Of The Vessel Blackbraid - I Ard - Take Up My Bones Tishina - Uvod Halberd - Parasitic Humanity Author & Punisher - Kruller Consecration - Cinis Strigoi - Viscera Mare Infinitum - Cryosleep (Just came out on Dec 16th!)
Oh great list : Top 10 Enterprise Earth - The Chosen Shadow of intent - Elegy Lorna Shore - Pain remains Consvmer -Obession Sold soul - I hope we make it out of this live A Wake in Providence - Eternity Meshuggah - Immutible Aviana. - Corporation Darko US - Uni Sprite - Hangman
I thought nothing could beat Hath for me, but An Abstract Illusion did it. This year as a whole was just... holy shit. Hath, An Abstract Illusion, Fallujah, Wake, White Ward, Disillusion, IATT, Tómarúm, Psychonaut, Aeternam, Allegaeon, and although it won't end up on anyone's year end list, for me Iomair's Fishing for an Apparition is the first folk metal record that resonated with me. Edit: And the hell with it, I cannot do without mentioning Iapetus' The Body Cosmetic, which while not released in 2022, I only discovered this year, and ties with An Abstract Illusion for my overall favourite album of 2022. I spent a long time trying to decide which I liked better, before coming to the conclusion that doing so was missing the point entirely, and that I can just enjoy the fact that I gained two albums that will be with me until the day I die.
I like the Sigh pick here, very underrated group (was actually part of the first groups of the second Black Metal wave). What I was spinning this year: - Falls of Rauros: Key to a vanishing future - Misfyrhming: Med Hamri - Blut Aus Nord: Disharmonium - Wiegedood: There's always blood at the end of the road - False Light: White Ward
I have to go back, but from the top of my head. Zeal & Ardor - Zeal & Ardor Lorna Shore - Pain Remains Blackbraid - Blackbraid I Spiritworld - Deathwestern Venom prison - Erebos
Really like your list and thanks for getting me into An Abstract Illusion, awesome stuff! You forgot one real awesome album you could mention in my opinion which is "Divine Council" by "Psycroptic" my favorite Tech Death release this year. Take a look at it if you haven't! Keep up the awesome videos!
So great to see In the Woods… and Hangman’s Choir get some love! These are definitely 2 of the most underrated albums of the year that I don’t hear people talking much about.
Nice list, more albums for me to look into. My album of the year would be ORM - Intet-Altet, a Danish Black Metal concept album about the 4 stages of life. It's 90 min long and only 4 songs so not an easy listen but wow, what an album. Most listened would be Blind Guardian and Bloodbath, both fantastic releases from "bigger" bands. One of my favorites would also be the just released re-release of Axamenta's full length of 2006. "Ever-Arch-I-Tech-Ture" was criminally underrated upon release so I'm hoping more people will look into it. It's again a concept album with a story worthy of a blockbuster-movie, combining the best elements of Dimmu Borgir, Soilwork, Evergrey, (later) Emperor, ... 1 song even sounds like Finntroll. As weird as it may sound, please give Axamenta a listen, you will not regret it
Cool video. You spoke about some really cool albuns, and I am going to check out some that I didn't listen. My top 5: 1 - Zeal & Ardor - Zeal & Ardor 2 - Wilderun - Epigone 3 - Porcupine Tree - Closure\Continuation 4 - Cult of Luna - The Long Road North 5 - Amorphis - Halo
Some great picks here guys, especially Blind Guardian,Michael Romeo and Dissilution! My only slight gripe with Ayam is that I wish it was a little heavier, but when those parts hit,it sounds so impactful.
Pretty solid list, Forgemaster dudes! Totally agree with the selection, especially In The Woods, An Abstract Illusion and Hath. Lorna Shore's The Pain Remains would be my only addition, I wasn't expecting something like that at all. Soilwork's effort for me was in the deceptions of the year. I'll give a listen to Sigh and Disillusion, they went under my radar.
I really enjoyed Disillusion - Ayam, and An Abstract Illusion - Woe, however Soilwork - Overgivenheten just didn't hit the spot for me to be that high in all the albums I listen to, but it's still better than a majority of things I've listened to this year. I think Astronoid - Radiant Bloom was another of my favourites for the year, maybe post-metal, I group it with Prog Metal, it's so dense and does something completely different. I discovered it around the same time as Kardashev but it has a more open and receptive warmth to the sound while maintaining some sonic density that I really appreciated. Every time I put it on I want to listen to the whole album from start to end. While it was only released last week, I thoroughly enjoyed Sieze The Fate by Nemophila. I don't know what to say about it just yet, but they're probably my favourite band to put on while going for a run, nothing super aggressive, but fun and a bit heavy. Cheers for pointing me in the direction of some wicked releases this year.
My Top 10 of 2022: Venom Prison - Erebos Devil Master - Ecstasies Of Never Ending Night Arch Enemy - Deceivers Megadeth - The Sick, The Dying and the Dead... Slipknot - The End So Far Vorga - Striving Toward Oblivion Abyssus - Death Revival
Darko US - Oni for 2022 Rank 1 for me. Nothing comes even remotely close. Tom Barber is just an animal, and Baby J doing two entirely different instruments and producing the freshest sounding metalcore ever made in the history of the genre. Do not sleep on this album and band.
@@forgemastermetal surely not, but it belongs to metal lifestyle and partially defines you as a metalhead. That's why lots of metalhead that biologically lose their hair decide to shave or have very short haircut. Other styles are not typical for metal.
My top 10 of 2022 10. Crimson Steel - Night Creatures 9. The Troops of Doom - Antichrist Reborn 8. Wind Rose - Warfront 7. Terra Atlantica - Beyond the Borders 6. Fellowship - The Saberlight Chronicles 5. A Sound of Thunder - The Krimson Cult 4. Acid Blade - Power Drive 3. Albert Bell - Sword of Fierbois 2. Leather - We are the Chosen 1. Riot City - Electric Elite There was no contest for Number one, by far the album of the year. Regardless of genre.
You guys turned me on to what turned out to be my favorite album of the year, Voices of the Kronian Moon from Nite. I haven’t heard anyone else talk about it.
Everyone missed the last Sigh album "Heir to Despair" for some reason. I think because it came out at the very end of 2018. I love that album. This time it was me who didn't realize they had a new album out. I'll be sure to check it out. Best Thrash of 2022 was Traitor "Exiled to the Surface." I can't figure out why nobody mentions it. It's phenomenal.
I'm not a fan of super clean sounding prog metal I guess ;) My favorites of the year are Tzompantli, Daeva, Djevel, Gudsforladt, Messa, Wormrot, Origin, The Otolith, Putrefaction Sets In, Mizmor/Thou, Undeath, Slowbleed, Father Befouled, and Pharmacist.
Hey guys, Parasitario.. a death metal band from Japan just released their new album called.. everything belongs to death. It's old school with Pestilence and skeletal remains influences. I think it's really awsome and can't stop listening to it!! Would love for you guys to review the album and give it a wider audience. I really think they deserve that!
I don’t know why but the Disillusion album took me a few more listens to hit me. Generally, my initial reaction to an album dictates how I will feel about an album. I usually go through an album 4 to 5 times before garnering my opinion. It’s crazy but some of the albums that grow on me ends up being the ones I end up loving. Ayam is definitely in my top five of 2022. The description Ben came up with was perfect. The word, epic, gets overused for a lot of albums, but this one deserves to use that word.
@@forgemastermetal I think it depends on the person. It makes music so much more rewarding if you have patience to let stuff that might not hit you immediately absorb. And it’s a progressive metal album which is usually not my favorite subgenre for metal.
I do enjoy soilworks new album but I just don't think they are ever going to top The Living Infinite for me personally. Glad I stumbled upon your channel and for what it's worth my album of the year was NetherHeaven by Revocation
My 15 favorite albums of 2022 in alphabetical order: Aethyrick - Pilgrimage Allegaeon - Damnum Arkaik - Labyrinth Of Hungry ghosts Black Void - Antithesis Bloodbath - Survival Of The Sickest Devin Townsend - Lightwork Gaerea - Mirage In Aphelion - Moribund Kvaen - The Great Below Negativa - 04 Negative Plane - The Pact.. Revocation - Netherheaven Sigh -Shiki Ultra Silvam - The Sanctity Of Death Zeal and Ardor - Zeal and Ardor
Bjorn has transformed as a singer due in large part to The Night Flight Orchestra. Their albums have really stretched his vocal talents and made him a better singer all around. It is also too bad that the other main driver in both Soilwork and TNFO, David Andersson, is no longer with us. That is a huge blow still. Even though this list is now old and 2023 is at an end, my favorite metal album (still) of 2022 is Bloodbath's Survival of the Sickest. Nick Holmes finally sounds at home in the band, and they were in top form for that album.
Top 10 for me are as follows : 1) Septicflesh Modern Primitives. 2) Sakis Tolis Among the fires of Hell 3) Blackbraid -Blackbraid 4) Blind Guardian - American Gods 5) Kreator Hate Uber Alles 6) Behemoth Opvs Contra Natvram 7) Arch enemy Deceivers 8) Amorphis Halo 9) Venom inc There's only one Black 10) Lamb of God Nevermore
This is the first year I have felt truly up to date on a lot of stuff, while fully knowing there's tons I have missed...not ordered yet, but... The Chasm Negative Plane Blackbraid Riot City Sigh Grima Imperial Triumphant Spell Autoneosis Misþyrming ...most likely top 10. Still a couple weeks of furious listening to do!
My Top 13 Maul High command Grand harvest Autonoesis Ripped to shreds Sumerlands Devnial verdict Tomarum In aphelion Sonja Immolation Psychonaut Brutus
I have read the comments people left their top 10 bands, and I watch the video… I guess there’s not very many Origin fans here. They released a new album this year, the skill and the songwriting they display is heads above most things released this year to me …Also soilwork lost me after Chainheart machine
Hell of a list! Whats with no one mentioning Tomarum - Ash in Realms of stone icons? I thought that was one of the best black metal releases this year...
My Top 10 of 2022:
An Abstract Illusion - Woe
White Ward - False Light
Dream Unending - Song of Salvation
Djevel - Naa Skrider Natten Sort
Disillusion - Ayam
Gudsforladt - Friendship, Love and War
Sigh - Shiki
Devin Townsend - Lightwork
Brymir - Voices in the Sky
Blind Guardian - The God Machine
Nice list dude! I tried on that Dream unending record. I don’t get why it’s not resonating.
Its not your typical death doom. It sounds like if Steve Vai collaborated with a death doom band except with not as much shredding.
Great list
Lightwork is significantly weaker than other albums on your list, but you do you.
False Light blew my mind
My Top 10 of 2022:

Hey Jose! Thanks for sharing your list!
Abstract illusion is our top. Similar thing happened with me and Kardashev lol
All those are near the top of mine. Epigone came out first week of 2023 and I knew it would be an AOTY contender.
Thank you for listening to the new In The Woods… album!🤘
Nice list guys, and I suppose here is an opportunity to post mine. I'm still catching up on albums for the end of the year, but as of now, here are my top 20 metal albums of 2022.
Aeviterne - The Ailing Facade
An Abstract Illusion - Woe
Aronious - Irkalla
Artificial Brain - Artificial Brain
Ashenspire - Hostile Architecture
Bekor Qilish - Throes of Death From The Dreamed Nihilism
Blut aus Nord - Disharmonium: Undreamable Abysses
Dream Unending - Songs of Salvation
Grima - Frostbitten
Hath - All That Was Promised
Hissing - Hypervirulence Architecture
Imperial Triumphant - Spirit of Ecstacy
Inanimate Existence - The Masquerade
Innumerable Forms - Philosophical Collapse
Krallice - Crystalline Exhaustion
Soul-Glo - Diaspora Problems
Ultha - All That Has Never Been True
Wake - Thought Form Descent
White Ward - False Light
WORM - Bluenothing
Dude what a killer list!
Great list. I agree with An Abstract Illusion as AOTY. I also have 5 of your choices repeating. But nothing tops WOE. Amorphis and Persefone are also worth the time
🔥🔥
I was actually so glad that In the Woods... and Blind Guardian learnt from their recent feedback and perfectly constructed what their fans wanted! Also, here's my top 10 (no order) that a lot of folk haven't heard:
Bootes Void - C.O.L.D.
Vorga - Striving Toward Oblivion
Ripped to Shreds - Jubian
Phobophilic - Enveloping Absurdity
Gutvoid - Durance of Lightless Horizons
Tzompantli - Tlazcaltiliztli
Daeva - Through Sheer Will And Black Magix
Ellende - Ellenbogengesellschaft
Vorbid - A Swan by the Edge
Misþyrming - Með hamri
A lot of fantastic releases this year but some of these actually pulled me into a vortex of nonstop headbanging vibe.
Would have loved to see this list on our Underrated Albums video!!
Totally on board with Sigh, An Abstract Illusion and Hath. My top 5 (as in the 5 most enjoyable metalreleases) further includes Septic Flesh and Imperial Triumphant. Yours is overall a nice list though. Keep up the good work guys.
Those are solid additions!
nice video, really great quality for a small chanel
My #1 is also Woe, and "Ash in the Realms of Stone Icons" and "Tiktaalika" are also great albums that were not mentioned
Thanks for the kind words!
My top 10 this year (in no particular order):
Fer de Lance - The Hyperborean
The Otolith - Folium Limina
Sigh - Shiki
Hammers of Misfortune - Overtaker
Immolation - Acts of God
The Chasm - The Scars of a Lost Reflective Shadow
Disillusion - Ayam
Hath - All That Was Promised
In The Woods - Diversum
Ashenspire - Hostile Architecture
Ashenspire 🖤
While there were a heck load of albums I greatly enjoyed this year, there are 3 albums that blew me away to a point where they might even land in my top 20 fav metal albums of all time. And heck, all three were included in this vid.
Disillusion - Ayam
An Abstract Illusion - Woe
Fallujah - Empyrean
Overall a really amazing year for metal.
Love those!
HATH is one of my favourite albums of last year. Another one is WHITE WARD ‘false light’ - absolute beauty. I love sax and trumpet in metal. Must be my favourite discovery of 2022. Reminds me of PAN-THY-MONIUM (rip)
White Ward and Hath are both excellent
Awesome list. The Sigh and Hath albums are so good. Here are my top ten favorite metal albums of 2022.
1. Static Dress - Rouge Carpet Disaster (post-hardcore/emo pop/metalcore)
2. Nechochwen - Kanawha Black (blackened folk metal/progressive rock/death metal)
3. Marrasmieli - Martaiden mailta (atmospheric pagan black metal)
4. Brutus - Unison Life (post-hardcore/math rock/post-metal)
5. Mossgiver - The Song Among Branches (atmospheric black metal)
6. Blackbraid - Blackbraid I (atmospheric black metal)

8. White Ward - False Light (avant-garde post-black metal)
9. The Callous Daoboys - Celebrity Therapist (mathcore/post-hardcore/pop punk)
10. Wormrot - Hiss (grindcore)
You gave me a few to check out here!
Darko's Oni is rank 1 for me by far. Everything else I've heard in 2022 makes me go "Oh, this is some good metal, made by human beings". But when I listen to Darko it's just a level above.

Cult of Luna - The Long Road North
Thanks for being part of the journey! We’re stoked we found AAI too.
Great list! If I should pick one, it gutta be Blut Aus Nords last album. Best nightmare I've had in years
They’re great at that vibe
I have to say of all the metal channels I follow my tastes seem to most align with that of your own. Can always rely on this channel to send me in the right direction to find new albums that are right up my ally. Some of my favorites of the year have been Allageon, and Oceans of Slumbers new albums. My daughter is 4 and she loves singing along in the car to the new oceans of slumber album. It was the soundtrack to our family vacation to myrtle beach this year. It's not as heavy as if like but father daughter bonding puts it to the top of my list of favorite albums this year!!!
Your daughter has wonderful taste! That oceans of slumber record is a powerhouse.
They have good taste as well as Questy.
Bout to go listen to In the Woods now. Definitely sold me on that one. I completely agree with Abstract Illusion (thanks for putting that on my radar awhile back), Sigh, and especially Hath!!! I can’t even put into words why they’re so good but certain parts of that album are pure perfection
Excited to hear your thoughts on In the Woods

An Abstract Illusion - Woe, is on the top of my list as well. First part of the album sounds like a modern version of early Opeth (still life era), while the second part has many more influences, with a prevalent While Heaven Wept sound (of empires forlorn era). What an album!

Iberaki was a great and unexpected collaboration .
@@andyventures6574 Indeed. I knew that it wouldn't be a regular Black Metal record, so what I heard pretty impressed me
@@xPushTeTx Never a fan of Heafy's other stuff , but as Insaahn was involved I gave it a chance and was glad I did .
Not giving away my list because I'm still catching up on some albums I missed, but there are a couple hardcore albums from this year that I absolutely loved. Comeback Kid's Heavy Steps and Dead Cross's II for example.
Dude that comeback kid record SLAPS
My top picks are: 1: Zeal and Ardor - Zeal and Ardor. 2: An Abstract Illusion - Woe. 3: Peth - Merchant of Death. 4: Aenaeon - Mnemosyne. 5: Still undecided…10,000 Years - III so far…

I liked Persefone and Allegaeon albums, Kardashev too. Have a blast with An Abstract Illusion thanks to your list!
That Allegaeon album is awesome!
Definitely one of my top five tech death albums of the year.
Soreption was siiiiick

1 Dream Unening-Song of Salvation
Great list - I don’t get this Dream Unending hype. I feel like I’m missing something lol
Cheers!

In my opinion, both of those were some of the best records they have each released in MANY years (possibly even decades, at least in GB's case)
Now I need to go and check out the M. Romeo, Hangman's Chair, and Disillusion...
The rest of my Top 5 looks something like this:
BAD OMENS - The Death of Peace of Mind
NORDJEVEL - Gnavhòl
ROLO TOMASSI - Where Myth Becomes Memory
RAMMSTEIN - Zeit
I’m so glad you dug those man! That Nordjevel record RIPS too.
Fantastic list, Forgemasters!
As of this moment, my top ten (based on level of obsession lol):
10. Undeath
9. Blackbraid
8. Strychnos
7. Temple of Void
6. Faetooth
5. Revocation
4. Devenial Verdict
3. Wilderun
2. An Abstract Illusion
1. Wake
\m/@@\m/
Nice! Love that Undeath record
@@forgemastermetal It, the new Autopsy, and Phobophilic are like the most brutal of Lazy Susans on my OSDM rotation 😆
Great list! No one mentions the prog metal core of Shadow of intent. That Elegy trilogy on Elegy is epic!
It's brilliant isn't it!

3. White Ward - False Light
2. Imperial Triumphant - Spirit of Ecstasy
FAVORITE ALBUM OF 2022: Gaerea - Mirage
Solid and well rounded list Mate!
Love your list mate!
Top 3 best of 2022
3 Imperial Triumphant Spirit Of Ecstasy
2 An Abstract Illusion Woe
1 Dream Unending Songs of Salvation
Killer final list. I wanted to like Dream Unending, just didn’t stick for me.
I like the Sigh pick here, very underrated group (was actually part of the first groups of the second Black Metal wave).
What I was spinning this year:
- Falls of Rauros: Key to a vanishing future
- Misfyrhming: Med Hamri
- Blut Aus Nord: Disharmonium
- Wiegedood: There's always blood at the end of the road
- False Light: White Ward
Great picks there JW!
I have to go back, but from the top of my head.
Zeal & Ardor - Zeal & Ardor
Lorna Shore - Pain Remains
Blackbraid - Blackbraid I
Spiritworld - Deathwestern
Venom prison - Erebos
Nice!!!
That one will be on another list!
Good to see the fellow Sigh appreciation! Goddamn they're unreal
It’s crazy how good that record is
So great to see In the Woods… and Hangman’s Choir get some love! These are definitely 2 of the most underrated albums of the year that I don’t hear people talking much about.
We can't listen to them enough!!
Thank you so much for the support regarding our new album Diversum🤘
My top 5:
1 - Zeal & Ardor - Zeal & Ardor
2 - Wilderun - Epigone
3 - Porcupine Tree - Closure\Continuation
4 - Cult of Luna - The Long Road North
5 - Amorphis - Halo
Some great picks here guys, especially Blind Guardian,Michael Romeo and Dissilution! My only slight gripe with Ayam is that I wish it was a little heavier, but when those parts hit,it sounds so impactful.
Fair feedback on Ayam!
Thanks for your input! Lorna Shore definitely put out a good record.
Astronoid is awesome dude, glad you dug that album.
Some of my favourite metal releases of 2022 included:
- Ashenspire - Hostile Architecture
- Negative Plane - The Pact...
- Swampborn - Beyond Ratio
- Pyrithe - Monuments to Impermanence
- The Devil Wears Prada - Color Decay
- Autopsy - Morbidity Triumphant
- Imperial Triumphant - Spirit of Ecstasy
- Ebony Pendant/Lamp of Murmuur - Plenilunar Requiems
- Grave Pilgrim - Molten Hands Reach West
Lots of underapprrciated ones here!
Had no idea In The Woods… dropped a new album. Just checked it out and it sounds really good. Thanks for putting it on my radar guys.
It's amazing.
Thank you. We worked our asses off on it.
My Top 10 of 2022:
Venom Prison - Erebos
Devil Master - Ecstasies Of Never Ending Night
Arch Enemy - Deceivers
Megadeth - The Sick, The Dying and the Dead...
Slipknot - The End So Far
Vorga - Striving Toward Oblivion
Abyssus - Death Revival
Venom Prison 💚
Darko US - Oni for 2022 Rank 1 for me. Nothing comes even remotely close. Tom Barber is just an animal, and Baby J doing two entirely different instruments and producing the freshest sounding metalcore ever made in the history of the genre. Do not sleep on this album and band.
I also really enjoyed Enveloping Absurdity by Phobophilic. It's a brutal album and the riffs are so good
Missed that one! I’ll scope it this week
Finally some metalheads in TH-cam with long hair. So many other so called experts without basic specs 😻
Your hair length doesn't determine your passion for music!!
@@forgemastermetal surely not, but it belongs to metal lifestyle and partially defines you as a metalhead. That's why lots of metalhead that biologically lose their hair decide to shave or have very short haircut. Other styles are not typical for metal.
Some great picks here! Loved Disillusion, In The Woods, Soilwork.
What about Amorphis Halo? Amazing album!
That album is awesome! Brandon put it on his best of melodic death.
My top 10 of 2022
10. Crimson Steel - Night Creatures
9. The Troops of Doom - Antichrist Reborn
8. Wind Rose - Warfront
7. Terra Atlantica - Beyond the Borders
6. Fellowship - The Saberlight Chronicles
5. A Sound of Thunder - The Krimson Cult
4. Acid Blade - Power Drive
3. Albert Bell - Sword of Fierbois
2. Leather - We are the Chosen
1. Riot City - Electric Elite
There was no contest for Number one, by far the album of the year. Regardless of genre.
Nice unconventional list dude!
@@forgemastermetal thanks. If you like straight up, undiluted heavy metal listen to the top 4 on this list as I saw a lack of those on your list.
I do. The one record in that genre that really hit me was Sumerlands’ new album. I’ll scope your suggestions!
@@forgemastermetal Sumerlands is a great one, just not top 10 of the year for me.
You guys turned me on to what turned out to be my favorite album of the year, Voices of the Kronian Moon from Nite. I haven’t heard anyone else talk about it.
It’s so good!
Great list. A lot of names I'm gonna have to check out. Cheers!
Enjoy!
Great list- freaks me out when you don’t look at the camera when talking tho 😂
Get me a teleprompter then 😝
Everyone missed the last Sigh album "Heir to Despair" for some reason. I think because it came out at the very end of 2018. I love that album. This time it was me who didn't realize they had a new album out. I'll be sure to check it out. Best Thrash of 2022 was Traitor "Exiled to the Surface." I can't figure out why nobody mentions it. It's phenomenal.
Their discography is stunning.
That Mizmor / Thou split is CRUSHING.
You mentioned Sigh and you got a thumbs up right from the start.
They rule.
Nice! Thanks for the suggestion.
Why do you think it takes so many listens for it to "click"?
@@forgemastermetal I think it depends on the person. It makes music so much more rewarding if you have patience to let stuff that might not hit you immediately absorb. And it’s a progressive metal album which is usually not my favorite subgenre for metal.
Great reviews, guys.
Glad you like them!
I do enjoy soilworks new album but I just don't think they are ever going to top The Living Infinite for me personally. Glad I stumbled upon your channel and for what it's worth my album of the year was NetherHeaven by Revocation
We're glad you're here! Revocation is DOPE
My 15 favorite albums of 2022 in alphabetical order:
Aethyrick - Pilgrimage
Allegaeon - Damnum
Arkaik - Labyrinth Of Hungry ghosts
Black Void - Antithesis
Bloodbath - Survival Of The Sickest
Devin Townsend - Lightwork
Gaerea - Mirage
In Aphelion - Moribund
Kvaen - The Great Below
Negativa - 04
Negative Plane - The Pact..
Revocation - Netherheaven
Sigh -Shiki
Ultra Silvam - The Sanctity Of Death
Zeal and Ardor - Zeal and Ardor
Solid!
Thanks for tuning and dropping your thoughts, Forgemate!
Top 10 for me are as follows :
1) Septicflesh Modern Primitives.
2) Sakis Tolis Among the fires of Hell
3) Blackbraid -Blackbraid

Sumerlands
Devnial verdict
Tomarum
In aphelion

Nice!
Shiki is soooo good! Also need to add that it’s got the most tasteful metal drumming I’ve heard all year.
Everything is top notch
I have read the comments people left their top 10 bands, and I watch the video… I guess there’s not very many Origin fans here. They released a new album this year, the skill and the songwriting they display is heads above most things released this year to me …Also soilwork lost me after Chainheart machine
Origin released a fine album! Definitely not anything groundbreaking, though.
Deathless Legacys new album from start to finish is pure gold.
i missed White Ward and Wake on this, and maybe Conjurer or Cult of Luna. But Hath i agree on, its such a sicccck record
Some of the bands you mentioned are on some lists we have coming up.
I love Soilwork absolutely a favorite of mine.
So good!
My playlist is going to increase drastically
Welcome to the Forge! 2023 is off to a good start, too.
Ellende, Grima, Dreariness & Isafjord
Hangman's Chair was my favorite metal release of the year. So good.
Love it
Hell of a list! Whats with no one mentioning Tomarum - Ash in Realms of stone icons?
I thought that was one of the best black metal releases this year...
We still have best black metal coming up this month!
