In reality, the storm formed on top of them. They were heading home and the initial weather reports didn't say it was going to be as bad as it turned out to be, so they decided to keep on going. And they had traveled in bad weather before, so they likely initially weren't too worried. There was an updated forecast not long before the storm hit that made it sound worse, but still underestimated it. There's indications they tried to go a different way to escape it, but it was too late. They made it sound like they knew in the movie to make them seem more heroic or crazy or both.
Everytime I see this part I just think of Skip killed them men he should've turned around when he first got word about the storm😢 but I do love this movie because of the storm
In real life, based on the last known radio transmissions and reported position of the boat, they were a few days into their return trip home and got caught in the storm. Not like the movie where they were warned about it and chose to try going through it
