Oh how terrible! The German soldiers can no longer fight and kill for the German Nazi government! Disgusting! This propaganda movie has nothing to do with reality! The German submarine sailors and especially the captains were heroes to the German Nazi propaganda. They were heroes of Nazi propaganda and they were very happy to be! In this German propaganda movie the opposite is shown and these Nazi soldiers are turned in this movie into heroes who were actually opponents of the German Nazi government. Really evil, mendacious propaganda! If one look closely. One can't see a swastika under the eagles on their caps. If one wonders why. A Swastika on the cap does not suit to a German heroes. The Nazi submarine sailors and officers played a special role in German propaganda. They were the heroes of the entire nation and they enjoyed the bang. There were especially many honors for them also receptions. They were courted like movie stars. All Germans loved them as heroes! In this movie they are actually treated like stars, there is also a reception in honor of the officer on a cruise ship. This ending sort of ruined the somewhat realistic (not very accurate by many aspects) atmosphere of movie.

@@KretinoSantino The movie had one of the biggest budgets of any German movie ever. Blowing a whole lot more for a few seconds would have been hard to justify. This was before the days where you could add as many AAA as you wanted via CGI. Just like they had to do with what planes they could get their hands on. And the scene was supposed to take place in La Rochelle

Buchheim wrote a sequel named "Die Festung" (The Fortress)
It´s again about Lt. Werner and the nameless Kapitänleutnant from the first book, who survived his injuries (which was not intended by Buchheim when he wrote the Original ending. It is very clear, that the captain was mortally wounded, and it´s also the last sentence in the book*)

I saw this movie in the theater when it was released in 1981. I remember on the lobby poster it said "Das Boot", and in smaller print, "The Other Side of World War II".
When the air raid siren sounded, I almost jumped out of my seat in shock. I thought, "Oh, no!! After all the crew has been through, they get bombed!" When I left the theater, there was an odd tug at my heart. Even though the Germans were our enemies in WWII, this film portrays them as human beings, doing the job they were ordered to, just like any Allied serviceman. A lot of them didn't make it home, just like a lot of Allied servicemen.

As impressive as those U Boats are, they are very cramped on the inside. There is a captured German sub, the U-505 on display at the Museum of Science & Industry in Chicago. If you were tall, you had stay stooped over, so you wouldn't hit your head on all those metal pipes. And there was only 1 latrine available, and no showers and no laundry facilities. At the end of a tour, the mattresses, bedsheets, pillows, blankets and clothes had to be burned, they were gross out filthy. And there was no refrigeration, either. So many times the sailors had to eat spoiled food, even thought the galley cooks tried to disguise it with a lot of flavorings and spices. You have to pay extra to get a guided tour of the inside of the sub, though, but it's worth it.

Great use of cameras to show the claustrophobic nature of duty inside a U-Boat and the beards, something German submariners took great pride in on returning from a long patrol, since fresh water was at a premium and usually reserved for cooking.

This was the time just before the US entered the war. The Royal Navy had learned to deal with U-Boats (as we were able to witness through the movie) and as a result, more and more boats never made it back to their bases. That flotilla was likely pretty far from full strength and had most boats out on patrol, so of course the reception of a returning boat would be pretty depressing.
Funfact: When the Americans entered the war, the U-Boats experienced some kind of a second spring for a few months because initially the Americans made just the same mistakes as the British did and subsequently left more opportunities for U-Boats to attack Convoys and slip away before the US Navy could pin them down. This of course changed rather quickly with the Americans gaining experience and receiving advise from the British.

I once read a saying that "only ants and humans make war on their own kind". It's true!
My mother is from Wiesbaden, and she remembers the air raids, running for the basement, going to bed hungry and waking up hungry, there was never enough of anything, and wondering if she would ever see her Papa again (he was in his mid-30s when he was drafted into the Wehrmacht, where he was a payroll master). He came home safe and sound, and he never mentioned the war for the rest of his life. Ever. He was disgusted by the whole thing, and just wanted to be with his wife and three little daughters. He hated Hitler and the Nazi Party and wanted nothing to do with them, but, when you got drafted, you had no choice but to obey. Or face lethal consequences. Whether it's Das Boot, or Saving Private Ryan, it makes you realize how nasty war is, friend or foe. 😢

@@lindaoneil5085 Part of the reason is simply that the first nuclear test (Trinity) was on July 16, 1945, i.e. over two months after Germany surrendered. And in the last months of the war the damage to all substantial German cities was already so extensive that a nuclear detonation might not have been very convincing, whereas Hiroshima had been deliberately left not attacked so that both the USA and Japan could learn what the effects were. After the war ended it was concluded that neither Japan nor Germany had been working very effectively towards a nuclear bomb, although interestingly although the USA "Manhattan Project" was a vast undertaking, Germany actually spent more than that on the V2 rocket program, i.e. only achieving the ability to drop one ton of explosives quite imprecisely into a target area 200 miles away. Also noteworthy is that at the behest of Leo Szilard, Albert Einstein wrote to President Roosevelt warning of the consequences of Germany creating nuclear weapons - so two Jewish emigres from Nazi-dominated Europe were instrumental in propelling the USA to besting the German efforts.

Before I watched this film, I could never have imagined to ever hate the allies. Being British, I naturally lean toward the allies in war films. But this film got you so invested in the characters, you lived and breathed their ups and downs. You were elated when they made it home. Then the allies attack by air and most of them die and the boat sinks, after having endured and survived so much. For that moment you despise the allies.
    That is good movie making.

Haven't watched the movie....does it show this u-boat sinking merchant shipping and leaving thousands of men to die in the water...or surfacing and shooting the survivors in cold blood? Because that's what really happened. No sympathy for them.

      @ralfwk 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

@@arthapeterson5239 Since you didn't watch the movie, they also showed how they sank a ship with a "Fangschuss" (a final torpedo to make the ship sink), assuming that the allies would have rescued the people on board by then. As they realized there were actually people on board, they were crying, as they couldn't rescue them.
Just one little advise to you: don't make comments about a movie you haven't watched.
Wars are cruel and no nation has been a saint in history.
In a way, in particular with this ending, it is a anti war movie.

@@arthapeterson5239 Indeed, there are without doubt many incidents were Germans committed unspeakable atrocities, but also many incidents where Germans have shown resistance and helped victims of the 3rd Reich. In that context a lot of the resistance came actually from within the German army (e.g. Stauffenberg, among others). But in a fascist autocratic regime resistance is difficult as can be sadly witnessed today in Russia. If Trump wins the next election, the US might head into that direction too.
The point is that you made a fool out of yourself by making a comment about a movie you have not even seen and could not possibly get the message behind it just from short clips on youtube.

    Some facts:
The captain was actually Heinrich Lehmann-Willenbrock. He served as an ensign on the "Karlsruhe", later trained officers for the Reichsmarine. He then took over an old U5 before being promoted to Lieutenant First Grade (Kapitänleutnant zur See) and finally got the command of U96, on which the movie plays, later U305 (he actually survived the harbor attack ...) and after the war of the "Otto Hahn", the first and only German freighter that had an atomic reactor as main energy source.
The Ensign who was present on U96 (which ran on ground not as spectacular as shown to over 280 meter ever, but actually did two times at a depth of 50 and 70 meter) was Buchheim, the author of "Das Boot" which was the novel behind this movie. Willenbrock and Buchheim were good friends and the captain was actually a mentor of Buchheim and proof read his novel after it was finished. But their friendship ended in 1986, when Willenbrock spoke very positive about the German submariners without any critics on the political background of the Nazi war they participated in. Buchheim was disgusted by that and told that to his former idol. Only weeks after, Willenbrock, "the old man", finally died, after he had actually received the German Federal Cross of Merit a decade earlier, the highest civil medal you can ever achieve in our country. Buchheim died in 2007. Their friendship was destroyed by the fact that Buchheim distanced himself from everything the Wehrmacht had made him do while Willenbrock, albeit never a convinced Nazi, stayed fond of the Wehrmacht and defended their actions, especially the submarine force. After everything we learned from Buchheim, I gotta come to the conclusion, that he was the one who was right.

The cinematogrophy trick with the admiral coming into scene and the camera following him to lure the viewer into thinking we’re about to see an exchange between the admiral and cpt heinrich. You think your about to see somes sort of summary of the movie just to to have the fanfare interupted by the air/raid-klaxon is so fucking great. I love this movie.

As an English child, I think older primary school age, seeing this film and this sequence. It sort of broke my brain (in a good way) a bit in being a key learning moment for my worldview. My father informed me it was the RAF attacking, and in my young mind, the world til that point was split between 'good guys' and 'bad guys'. This ending taught me it wasn't that simple, and while of course the Nazis were villainous and condemned to be evil in history, this story about regular combatants in the war has stuck with me since.

This movie was serialised on TV and that's where I saw it though I can recall when it first came out in the cinemas I didn't really want to see it but I then read the book. Great book. You know they're the bad guys, but you can sympathize with their situation. There's a scene where they're being depth charged or torpedoed and it is so well done. Truly claustrophobic.
The other WWII movie I like is A Bridge Too Far. It's like an ode to Murphy's law.
    Thanks for the post.
