Why the Ferrari 512 BBi is a piece of history.

  • Ferrari’s has always tried to put their racing technology into their production cars. In the early 1970s, the flat 12 “Boxer” technology used in the early 1970s Ferrari Formula One and Ferrari 312 PB Sports racers found its way into Ferrari’s flagship 12-cylinder sports cars, the 365 GT4 BB (“Berlinetta Boxer”) and the 365's successor, the 512 BB/BBi.
The Ferrari 512 BBi also commonly referred to as the Ferrari Boxer due to its flat-12 Boxer-style or flat V-12 engine. During10-year production run of the 512 BBi there were 3 variations. While all three models may look similar they were indeed very different from each other in numerous ways. The Ferrari boxer family was first introduced in 1973 with the 365 GT4/BB, standing for Berlinetta Boxer, it was a successor to our personal favorite car the Ferrari Daytona. in 1976, the Ferrari 512 BB was born, based off the 365 BB. It received numerous upgrades, including a wider rear track, a lower front air dam, a wider, longer body, NACA ducting for the rear brakes and a slightly lengthened tail section. The final version of the Ferrari Boxer family was the Ferrari 512 BBi which was introduced in 1983. The "i" in the name indicates that the model was now fuel injected.

It's not a Boxer, the real name is ''Berlinetta Bialbero'' (twin cam in Italian). Unlike a Porsche or Subaru engine (Boxer), where the opposed pistons have separate crankpins, the ferrari flat 12 have opposed pistons that share the same crankpins like the 60° v12s, so when one piston is up, the opposed one is down.

I am contemplating purchasing a Ferrari BBI. I found it strange Ferrari spent a fortune for this flat 12 cylinder, and stopped immediately after the last BB was built. It also lost nearly a thousand RPM’s, and sounds like the oil pan is full of rocks. It’s predecessor the Daytona has the best sounding engine for all Ferrari’s past current and most likely future. I think Ferrari was at its finest with the car’s from the sixties to eighties except the 308 which Ferrari just sold because of the name, and horrible handling and total lack of performance. Late Models sound like a Japanese motorcycle. Also I was always nervous about the rubber band on my Ferrari versus chains that I understand have been brought back. These later car’s will be junked at a young age because of the ridiculous abundance of on board computer’s that will likely not be available.

Nice video, the engine is a V12 (with a 180 degree V-angle). The conrods of the opposing banks share the same crank pin. Unlike an actual boxer engine...This engine also sits high up in the car as it mounts above the gearbox, which most likely compromises the handling. Not that I would know from experience, as I'm not lucky enough to own such a thing.

  • @stevenrobertson7643

Great video again. A few corrections. The French actress you referred to is Brigitte Bardot, not Birginette Bardot. The Flat 12 engine was used in F1 with the 512F1 (1.5 litre flat 12) in 1964 and 1965 as you said. The 212E was used in 1969 and the Flat 12 engines were used in F1 between 1970 and 1980. Top speed of the 512 Boxers was way higher than 150 (or was it 160 mph you said?) mph, at 174 mph. The lighter 365 GT4 BB with 4.4 litre engine was more powerful, but with lower torque, and a higher top speed. The clutch is stiffer on the 365 GT4 BB being a cable clutch. The 512 BB and 512BBi have hydraulic clutches. The BBi has lower profile Michelin TRX tyres of the same size and and same size wheels on all 4 corners. Regarding the cam chains you got it the wrong way around. All 3 iterations of the BB have cam belts, not chains.

Out in the small hours years ago, I pulled up on the right rear quarter of a BB. I savored the anticipation as I rolled down my window.
As heard in this video, that BB ran with a guttural, mechanical drone very unlike the ripping song you hear from the V-block cars. It was a revelation to a tyro. I had idealized the muscular profile and functional detail of this car over the side-straked TR since the first newsstand cover I'd spotted.
To this day, it puts me in mind of a young Arnold Schwarzenegger. If most of us do not see something both contradictory and comparable in the two, that also puts me in the minority.

I tried it on and it fit me like the proverbial glove. Smelled like a new car too. The salesman was giving me the hard-sell. "So, how much?" $41.000 "41?!" It's negotiable but fairly firm. "Let me think about it.." So I call my dad and beg him to go in on it with me. I couldn't convince him that I knew more than the guy selling it. It's a v12 dad! Buy it yourself, he said.
I could go 20k, but not 40k. Went home, tail between the legs. Within two years they were going for 198k! I was So pissed! Those cars are pure magic🎩

Almost 100% of Ferrari owners are male. The firm I work at buys Ferraris for the lawyers (all males). Once you have the Ferrari...you have the women.
My point: using a woman to sale a Ferrari is like employing a fly to sell fly paper.
Ever seen a Ferrari try to SELL you a woman? You don't need to. Having a Ferrari attracts women like flies to fly paper. Get a male to sell the car; have the girl go along for the ride.
And before claiming sexual discrimination, see, United States v Virginia Military Institute 518 U.S. 515 (1996) majority opinion written by Ruth Bader Ginsburg. You can uniformly discriminate based on gender unless you receive government funding or are a publicly traded corporation on a U.S. stock exchange. Neither apply to you. We checked.

They were so favored by the Ferrari factory because he bought and imported 99 512BB's that the factory reps came to them for advice that led to the USA version Testa Rossas being first sold in California. Their sign was the same as the factory's at 2270 S Huron, Santa Ana. Back in the mid 80's I worked in what was called the gray market . We converted a few of these to be legal on the U.S. highways. They had a chassis dyno that they would use for part of the testing process and to here a flat 12 running W.F.O. it's something else. But having said that I still like a original Ford GT 40 better it just sounds more angry.

Out of all of the places that I have worked they were the only one that did not worry about money. If you needed anything they just went and got it for you. I think what makes the GT40 sound so Bitchin is the headers are "tuned" meaning they are built with the firing order. They are often called a Bundle of Snakes because that's what they look like.

In 1981 I was working at Budget rent a car on Harbor Blvd Costa Mesa. I was asked to take a customer to the old Newport Imports location by the Arches I believe. Near where Sterling BMW was a few years ago. The man had a cast on his foot, he played pro football for the Oakland Raiders. I dropped him off to pick up his BB 512. Bob Chandler, his car was sitting out front ready to go. I will always remember that sleek looking car, and it is my favorite Ferrari design.

Your production quality is very high. I might suggest cuts between dialogue. Not less dialogue. But cutting after 5-6 sentences, soliloquies are hard for people to focus on. We all have such short attention spans. But congrats on such an awesome channel!

I could buy a current Porsche GT4RS or GT3 for the same money buyers are asking for this car!

@@FerrarisOnline I know you're biased, but I disagree. The GT4RS will likely be the last naturally aspirated mid-engined Porsche before they go electric...the last of it's generation, and is a full GT car designeed by Andy Preuninger making it a rare and collectable car

About the two tone/slender: When you cut an object in half, horisontally, it will look longer from the side, and wider from the rear and the front. The design is a bit "stubby" with the car being, as you said, short. So to make it look a bit more elegant, a two tone, or a blacked out horisontal section, can be a solution. And can make the car look more slender.

Really enjoy your videos and your studio is spotless! With regards to the clutch on the BBi it is actually made to be lighter in operation than the previous two BB models, so similar to a 308 of the same era. Subsequently the BBi would eat their clutches regularly...
