About time someone finally stood up for our boy. I feel like a lot of people have the wrong approach for toon link. He's not your typical zoner. He's a rushdown character with zoning tools to mix up his combo game. Everyone seem's to forget that Toon Link has the fastest ground speed of the 3 Link's.

I prefer Toon Link over YL by a lot, and I think it is because he fits my defensive playstyle the best. YL can put out offensive pressure that makes the enemy choke while they juggle their defensive options, but TL is better at punishing unsafe approaches with relatively quick kill options. I do like big Link as well, but I'm too in love with zair!

Toon Link does struggle to land a lot more than the other two. Not only because he is noticably floatier, but because he also doesn't have very good hitboxes below him. The other two Link's can struggle to land too... But they also have big stupid lagless nair's that helps them a lot in landing situations.
that’s true. Part of toon link’s play style is to always have a bomb out which is a big help, but their nairs really do help the other two land better

I actually find Toon Link to be better than Young Link more than half the time, but we just saw more Young Link overall so he was just developed more, this issue is not just for T. Link though, this is for more than half the cast (I feel a great example is Marth himself) just cause better or easier alternatives exist

Toon link is honestly my favorite and best link and is one of my secondaries, so its really sad to see my boy being played so little and being called the worst link by some people...
Toon link was always my favorite. I’ve played him since brawl and he was my main for an incredibly long time until I switched him for my secondary (wario) I quite literally chose him because I thought his down taunt was funny and liked his voice the most. Also preferred his design and thought his name was funny. That’s it lol. And I played wario as a secondary in brawl because I thought his jerky animations and wario man were funny. He just happened to end up being a top tier in early ultimate. I actually stopped playing toon link for a while and this has convinced me to pick him up again.

Drop wario, he is disgusting, yes, I know he's objectively good with very fast aerials and a grotesque kill move, but where is your self worth. It is only acceptable to play wario once per opponent you verse in a tournament as a troll move to disrespect them, and once you've tilted them by playing such filth, you are legally obligated to shower and then switch back to your actual main. Ooorr you could just shower before the tournament and play any other character. If trolling your opponent is such a high for you, may I recommend any of the mii's they can provide the perfect ammount of disrespect and best of all they don't have a sharty ko move that makes you feel like sewage. Obviously if you enjoy the character, keep playing him, my commentary was meant more humorously than seriously, I genuinely think you need to rethink all of your entire life's worth of decisions, but respect your right to make said decisions. With love -just another opinionated smash player 😝

As someone who plays all 3 Links, and someone who enters Squad Strike at my local with my Squad being all 3 Links, yeah I can agree with all this
I technically comain Sora and Link but honestly been looking into Toon Link over Link rn just because he's more simple and covers more gaps in Sora's matchups

also yeah picking up one of the links seems to always cover at least a couple weaknesses. I main lucina and toon link is a good change of playstyle without losing speed (bc i suck playing slower characters except maybe byleth)
Toon Link is definitely an underappreciated character. I'm a Falco main myself (I love putting people into cutscenes), but I do play Toon Link occasionally. He is the easiest of three to pick him up and play a game. "Big" Link is too slow for me and with Young Link I can't kill opponent until 200%. It's understandable why higher level players pick "Big" or Young Link over my cartoon-y boy.

as a toon link main, he is my only elite smash character for a reason. Yes people dont like him because of reasons. I dont care. He is so goofy and amazing and i feel like people just need to get a new perspective about the my boy TL. No i'm not biased because my favorite zelda game is wind waker. Out of all three links he has.

Man you know I really get sick of everyone worrying about where characters are on the tier list and whos better and whos worse, cant we just agree that this is the most balanced smash game and that all characters can get saucy?

I love all three links so much, they're all so fun
toon link and young link are probably the most enjoyable to me, but that's primarily because adult link teases the idea of having a reworked moveset and then just doesn't. adult link is still fun, I just wish his moveset was reworked more to be more botw than "link in smash."
toon link has the silliest bomb confirms, and really interesting combos, as well as a fun gameplan. whenever I see TL gameplay I want to pick the character up again but I personally struggle to do much more than basic stuff with any of the links.
guess I have no choice but to continue playing Zelda, she's the character that just clicked with me when the game released and I've loved every second of playing her since.
Toon Link has the same situation going for him like Doctor Mario and P. Plant; there is another easier character for you to play just 10 slots to the right that probably will get more results. or it may be that they play weirdly, or some other point a Joker main probably made. I like TL because, simply put, it was a "Goldilocks situation" for me. Link was too slow, YL was too fast, Link had weird frame data, YL had WAY too fast frame data, so on and so on. but TL was just like, perfect I guess? I liked the sound effects, bomb smoke was cool, he's fast and has a nice kit in general, and I liked the pirate ship stage in brawl a lot.
the point is that there are too many underrated characters in smash, whether it be Toon Link, Doc, Plant, or your 500th swordie.
Actually, Toon Link has the best frame data of them all, making him actually quite nimble when alongside its above average movility and range, making him very flexible compared to Young Link's strong but predictable Zoning, while Toon Link can go for either Spacing or Zoning even though it has worse combo conversion.
It's actually debatable if either Young or Toon Link is better since both are showing signals of being High-Mid tiers as 6-7/10 characters (Good but unspectacular), but one thing is sure: ADULT LINK IS BAD and the worst Link overall; gimmicks don't replace a solid moveset, physics, gameplan or combo route.
Im a YL main but i always think, Toon link is the best, with wave bounces he become crazy and his proyectiles become safe, and you can mixup your landing with a wave bounce of down b because TL bomb animation its fast
Unpopular Opinion: Tier Lists are useless/pointless at best, and a complete joke at worst. (Seriously, they're nothing more than a meme)
As someone who believes that Toon Link is strictly mid tier and is possibly the worst Link (debating between him and Link), I believe the problem is that Toon Link is simply a better character on paper than in practice. He's usually considered a mid tier primarily due to his individual tools just feeling a bit undertuned despite having a lot of really good attributes.
Like he's fast as fuck sure, and that's by far his greatest strength. He's got range, projectiles that combo and can be good for zoning, and he's got some individually very good buttons, but the problem is cohesion. He's balanced a lot like an all-arounder, he technically has an answer for everything and his weaknesses aren't exactly TERRIBLE. However the problem is that they made him TOO much of an all-arounder with very linear win conditions and not great enough neutral to compensate for mediocre disadvantage + advantage state.
Toon Link's lack of prominence comes from a death of a thousand paper cuts. Like he's fast and his boxing is decent but he isn't like let's say Mario or Roy where you get 70% for scrapping with the oppponent with your better frame data, in fact Toon Link frame data isn't anything too crazy. It doesn't really help that none of his aerials will be particularly safe on shield due to the nature of being a floaty so his -3/-4 on shield N-Air would actually be more like -11/-12 landing in most cases, his rising aerials don't play very nice vs shorter characters and are only frame 6 at the fastest (with Neutral-Air and Back-Air) which for a disjointed move is fine but the actual reach of Toon Link's sword isn't enough to make it anything crazy. N-Air also doesn't have a ton of follow ups and Back-Air follow-ups are pretty specific and don't really have the confirm potential as other back-airs that send up such as Mythra nor does it kill confirm while landing.
Toon Link is in general quite weak on shield because none of his kit is particularly safe on shield and all of his projectiles obviously lose to shield. His grab is relatively slow due to it being a tether while not having the ridiculous range of most tethers and he lacks a real combo throw with his kill throw being pretty fake with good DI so it's hard to really threaten the opponent if they don't constantly panic jump shield to get hit by a Rising F-Air.
Toon Link obviously struggles to land like you said, he's a bit stubby and doesn't have anything to threaten people with while being floaty and kinda light with pretty average air speed at best so he gets smacked around a lot as well, don't really have to bring up too much of it. It's not the WORST disadvantage ever, not even top 15 worst, but it's quite subpar.
A lot of these are genuinely issues that Young Link struggles with too, in fact both characters have relatively linear win conditions, in fact Young Link's lows are quite low. He absolutely CANNOT stand characters that out-range him or can deal with his zoning while Toon Link has some more failsafes with his great mobility and having a bit more reliable kill power while not needing to worry as much about dropping combos. But here's the issue, Toon Link's lows are not super low especially compared to most of the cast, but by being a jack-of all trades his highs aren't that great either. F-Air is scary and getting jab lock f-smash'd for missing a tech vs like Z-Air can also be threatening but that's really all he has in the late game. So often times Toon Link will have to over-fish for rising F-Air's or be forced to camp hoping that he gets something but his ability to camp is quite ho-hum compared to most zoners. Boomerang has the universal issue with all the links where you can easily disable it by hitting it and Bomb toss trades poorly if the opponent decides to smack Toon Link first due to it being an item. Toon Link Arrows are FINE but compared to something like Young Link Arrows they're not good enough to make for a really strong long-range game and they don't really pose real threats. It's very easy to disengage with Toon Link without consequence or to just play grounded and just play defensively enough to avoid Bomb F-Air. There's a lot of top Toon Link matches where its minutes of nothing going on because Toon Link cannot find a real opening and doesn't want to risk dying to like an Up-Smash OoS or wants to be sent offstage from Grab OoS because nothing he has is super safe on shield.
He generally gets out-zoned by a lot of zoners, out-ranged and sometimes even out-frame data'd by a lot of sword characters, and doesn't have a strong enough neutral to really command respect from a lot of advantage-state heavy characters. In a meta that's requiring characters to have either an overcentralizing neutral (Young Link) or a strong ability to either hold a lead or rob people of stocks (Link) Toon Link's ho-hummedness makes him rather average. Like he does fine vs a lot of characters worse than him and he has the occasionally decent top/high tier matchup but he just both isn't played a lot and never really broke out because he isn't a super great bracket character in the long run that requires a lot of maintenance and talent to work.
There's a lot of other small issues with the character I could bring up but that's my two cents on why Toon Link is both regarded as pretty mid and why I don't really have a great opinion of the character from the perspective of a DDD main who has a -2 matchup on all three links.
I’ve also been maining Toon Link since Brawl, and I’ll admit I called him the worst link in Ultimate, but he’s the most fun to play

About that, Nintendo actually made up tilt to up air a true kill confirm in the hint section for toon link so getting that isnt too hard, maybe even easier than trying to land a bomb especially when the opponent has no range and must approach the little sword man with the frame data of little mac
YL is overrated. I’m pretty sure TL has better results then the other links. I see more TLs then the other 2. TL kills more consistently and his combos are much easier to learn. His dash speed and air speed are faster then the other 2 which makes his projectiles more useful for zoning. I also think a longer timer on bomb is better because you can have the threat of it out for longer. It leaves more time for mix ups.
The real reason people don't play Toon Link is because of his sword sound effects. Just imagine if they were more like the wind waker sound effects, since they clearly wanted a unique sound from other swords

People usually look over Tink because he has the least development when compared to the other Links I think. Young Link doesnt really need an explanation, but initially big Link was getting a ton of traction between bomb setups and combos to make him technical, while Tink was just...there..for alot of people.

Tink is my favorite character but I wish he was just a little bit better because some of his moves make no sense. If they made his back air kill easier (like joker bair) or even combo easier (like mythra bair) he would be so much better. A lot of his moves have the same problem where they don't kill or combo so they become borderline useless. Down tilt is probably one of the worst down tilts in the game, dash attack doesn't do anything, nair is just a much weaker samus nair, weak up air should be a reliable kill confirm into strong up air but there is only like a 10% window where it both combos and kills. So many things could be slightly changed about this character to make him more viable but nintendo will never do it smh.

He's definitely not "the worst". It's a classic example of the competitive Smash community just endlessly propping up the same characters over and over (aka Young Link, Wolf, Cloud, etc) and then automatically assuming everyone else is bad

I love this content because young link being the "best" is blasphemous, the link archetype is a zoner and young link is a terrible zoner, every single of his projectiles have verticle knockback, he can't play a zoner's game of knock your opponent off stage and then safely keep them away from stage with projectiles, if young link tries that he just helps is opponent recover by giving them verticle height, the only time young link zones properly is if his opponent has horrible joycon stick drift and can't return to stage due to controler issues. I personally prefer adult link, but hold toon link in a higher regard than young link every day, but I do sometimes wish toon link had a sex-kick neutral air with long lasting lingering hitboxes, I love nair to fast falling on my opponents
super fair, I think people would say YL is better in a more general scale even though toon link is the better zoner, to be fair I don’t even know how I’d rank the three links but I can 100% agree yl sucks at zoning because it sounds like he was mostly designed to convert off projectiles

I can understand how you think TL is a good character, but not how is Up-B is the best. Having an oos that has multiple uses is a bad trait to have. For oos options is much better to do have major strengths, even if it means having major flaws.
In higher level matches, you should only land oos if your opponent makes a major mistake. It’s better that Adult Link fully capitalises on mistakes, than TL’s Up B covering slightly more options, due to these situations being rare in the first place.
Yink’s Up B also combos, which synergises with the rest of his kit.
The other Links have Up Bs that synergies well with their kit, and make constantly pressure opponents to be cautious around their shield. TL completely fails to do this, having many mediocre traits doesn’t give the move purpose, especially in niche situations.

this dude downplayed yink so hard. sure up b doesn't kill but its borderline safe on block and impossibly hard to di correctly most likely resulting in an up air which kills anyways. you can hit any one of yink's projectiles from anywhere in the general vicinity of an opponent and turn it into a long combo, stock, or both. and slow projectiles arent everything, if your entire caracter's kit is slow it can result in a predictable tempo which tink doesn't really have a way to break. yink's projectiles are pretty similar speed to each other as well but are fast, safe, and convert much better, making them harder to play around
The only thing I agree with here, and it’s a strong argument, is that you can’t change up if EVERYTHING is slow. And that honestly is the thing that has help TL back a lot.. But a strong support to your argument would be this: Steve Minecart is strong because if your not paying attention, it can suddenly be super fast,making it inconsistent to contest it without a tool like Cloud Bair. But what if it was ALWAYS the same speed. Even A Greninja could bait and punish way easier with his forward air.
I think Young Link is by far the best of the three, but Toon Link is better than BotW Link imo. They’re close, but Toon Link is like, the top of midtier

Tl arrows are better than links arrows by alot. Links arrows are no real neutral tools... they are almost non existent in neutral only remarkable in some edgeguards scenarios. YLs arrows are insane no need to talk about them. But TL arrows are kinda like falcos laser in melee. By shooting 1 above the oponent and 1 at the oponent you can approach for free. Link cant use them like that because his arrows got a weird angle if not fully charged. You can jab lock the oponent with the arrows in range and because they are not that fast arrow into grab is a nice option. So i would say YL TL L when it comes to arrows. Recovery is bs TL got a much better time recovering than YL. He can drift back to oblivion while yl has a certain timing to respect due to his fast falling. And because TL is so floaty he has time to decide between z and normal recovery while covering edgeguards with his projectiles.

You wouldnt notice that imediatly because young links neutral is broken and the offstage situations are not as often as the other 2. Tl has much more room to recover than yl thanks to his air speed and floatyness. Tl is also the fastes of the 3 on the ground but yeah Link got nair and bomb combos which are in theory broken if you master them. YL is the best in neutral and has absolute no struggle in killing if you forget about the usual 120% range is kill range... just start and 150% and you re fine also fire arrow is broken. Toon Link is worst than those 2 and loses the match up vs those 2 but got his strength aswell. Thanks to floatyness he can mixup with b reverse and wavebounces much better than the other 2. His back air is his best sword atk but is a bit akward to use. I would say YL is the best thanks to fire arrows but got a bit of the sheik feeling of beeing too light + hard to kill with. Link is second... thanks to nair and thats really it. And TL would swap placement with the big bro if he would have the same nair. TL nair is fine its actually pretty good but not comparable to the 2 others

@@blackberry4322 I mean that would take a long time but if you give me 1 char I can talk a bit about the matchup. I can start with the most obvious one samus. Samus wins the matchup, but not by alot like 55 - 45. TL has to camp samus with bombs and arrows and cant go solo sword mode in. The matchup can be boring as hell if both players dont engage in cc. On battlefield TL can be anoying as hell with bombs and plattforms and samus has to aproach at some point. Samus is not helpless in cc but instead of a 70 - 30 matchup against oponents who cant rly force samus to aproach like DK it is a 55 - 45
