    The Gameboy lasted over 10 years till the GBA came out so Nintendo is probably going to do that. Especially since they have said they wanted this generation to last 10 years. So we need a Gameboy color soon.
    The important point to note with the Game boy color versus other upgrade systems is that the Game boy color got a lot of exclusive games whereas the DSi only had like 3 games and the 3ds XL only had like 6.

    Horrific to think the Switch is 6 years old already...But I think you nailed it with the point that a true successor isn't coming anytime soon. There's essentially zero market pressure to do so, and historically Nintendo has never jumped ship off their successful handhelds so quickly, they keep making slight upgrades. It's just doing way too well still to just wave goodbye to it.

    Great thoughts as always! I've got great memories of playing Smash Melee and FIFA on the GameCube with my college roommates. We also had a PS2 at our house but the GameCube saw the most action by far. I'd love to see more GC content on the Switch. I think GC games can be too easily "remastered" and marketed as a full price game so I don't see GC games being included in a Switch online membership. I have a Switch OLED but I would seriously consider buying a special edition GC-themed Switch (target market right here).

    The retention of the Original Wii was abysmal. Some signs that the Wii users would not stick with the Wii u. It is clear to see why they moved on after 7 years, but with the switch, it seems to be a greater attachment to the device. I give the thing 9 years of official support, meaning they send new consoles to the stores. But the next year is the last we will see first-party games on the switch. Maybe a Kirby or another small game on the 8th year.

I also like it portability and versatility where I can play in docked In handheld mode, which is how I play my switch, mostly because of that gorgeous OLED screen, Super Mario, Odyssey, and super Mario Bros, wonder and breath of the wild looks stunning on the OLED screed.

    The retro game service on the Wii and Wii U was called Virtual Console. But you actually bought each game individually on there and technically 'owned' them rather than the Netflix style service we have now on NSO. Strangely enough the original VC on the Wii was probably the best one. It had the largest selection of games and the most supported consoles including the Master System and TurboGrafx-16. It even had amazing TurboGrafx-16 gems like Castlevania: Rondo of Blood and Lords of Thunder. I agree with you 100% on the Switch. Having an absolutely gigantic install base like the Switch has is a very rare thing so they want to milk it for all its worth as that is a shit ton of people to sell software to. I think this is why they made a sequel to Breath of the Wild for it, another Splatoon and why they're making a bunch of new DLC for the 9 year old(!!) Mario Kart 8. They know the next MK is still a long ways away with the Switch successor so they decided to add 48 more courses to tide people over. Some kind of upgraded model akin to the Gameboy Color also seems likely. Mostly just to appease 3rd party developers who are probably always complaining to Nintendo about the Switch's dated hardware. Metroid Prime Remastered also shows what that dated hardware is still capable of in the right hands. Really incredible stuff, amazing that old Tegra X1 can do that.

    • @GenerationZ313
      @GenerationZ313 ปีที่แล้ว

      Honestly I'm sure whenever the next Nintendo console comes out they may just re-release Mario Kart 8 Deluxe with the Booster Course pass included and call it the MK8 Super Deluxe Edition or Booster Edition. As for retro games, I wish Nintendo took the Microsoft approach and just let us buy the games outright and offer a discount for each title if we have an NSO subscription.

  • @HedgehogY2K

    17:16 that's an interesting point, TV screens are taking a new direction with quantum dots and organic cells. I wouldn't use an OLED on an irreplaceable handheld. That was a very strange decision Nintendo made with the Pro variant. A more stable option would be more traditional like LCDs, however 720p LED still kinda sucks. I think since LED technology has become so cheap, Nintendo might use either QLED or just plain high quality IPS 1080p HDR 8 bit+FRC screens now that they're incredibly available, and maybe docked 4K upscaling.

    i believe that the major update may come in the form of a dock! with a chip that enables super resolution or DLSS to improve graphics and frame rates in docked mode. because portable mode is just perfect the way it is. We can't see higher resolution in the portable screen, it's just not confortable to read text in higher resolutions in portable screen. but the dock with DLSS is the closest to a switch pro, without making the general public feel that they've been left out

    • @lordeilluminati
      @lordeilluminati ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It is just not possible because the video output is very barebones and the console is not intended in any way to have a external chip helping with processing power. On the best case it can have something like a Marseille upscaler built in, something to "beautify" the image quality, but improving framerates is impossible. If the console had something like a proprietary protocol or something like Thunderbolt it could had a dock that improved the performance like Macbooks can use external GPUs.

    Release with added bonus levels flying the arwing. Then if it does great in sales, greenlight a part 2 with expanded story and gameplay and multiple playable characters each with unique level mechanics ie: Fox is the baseline obviously and just give Krystal adjustments in speed and strength, Peppy levels play like stealth, Falco maybe has timed gaunlet element to parts his stages to utilize his speed, and Slippy can a glass cannon overall build that has QTE elements in his control scheme when in combat making him feel very unique from the others. You hit the nail on the "Gameboy" model. I always noticed from the design philosophy, and the way it's advertised that from Nintendo's POV the Switch isn't a home console you can play portably; it's a handheld you can plug to your TV. The fact they made a handheld-only version of it and one with a better screen kinda supports that. And it's very possible that's how most consumers use it as well, since they wouldn't do these without any backup from statistics.
    On your claim on GameCube ports on the Switch, that could probably extend to PS2, or even Dreamcast (tho the Dreamcast stuff could only be a one-time collection).

    On your point about market pressure, I think systems like the Steam Deck are creating that. One of the early selling points for the switch used to be that it was the only proper way to get AAA gaming on the go. The deck definitely took that away imo

    I have a strong gut feeling that Nintendo will likely stick to hardware similar to the Switch for the foreseeable future. What I really love about it is the fact that they now can consolidate their handheld and console games into a single platform. As a consumer, it’s a godsend not to have to buy two separate devices in order to play all the games I want to play. I imagine for Nintendo it’s also a huge weight off their shoulders not having to market two systems simultaneously.
    I think it’s paramount that the next console be backwards compatible with the Switch. Having an already great library of games be accessible right off the bat along with new titles make for a much more enticing system.
    As for NSO and the Gamecube; I feel that the overwhelming majority of games from that era are sophisticated enough to warrant the effort of remastering them, as opposed to simple emulation.

    In my eyes the Wii U is a repeat of the GameCube and the Switch is a repeat of the Wii. A console that sold badly yet had great games but forced Nintendo to completely rethink it with the Blue Ocean strategy so both the Wii and the Switch became massive successes.

    Remember Nintendo is relying on third parties for their chip production, so that's where any reliable information on upcoming Nintendo hardware will come from.
    There were reliable outlets (especially Digital Foundry who knows a lot of developers and hardware people) who reported that Nintendo told Switch developers that a Switch with 4k and DLSS capability was in the works , but it got cancelled because of the chip shortage.
    The Nvidia leak revealed a Tegra successor that is more powerful (think base PS4 level) so I think it's plausible Nintendo uses that chip or something based on it . With PS4 level graphics and DLSS capability we can have some solid looking games.
    The Switch OLED uses an upgraded version of the original Tegra for better battery life and thermal performance , so I think Nintendo is fine with upgrading hardware.

    I get not wanting to speculate, but the 4chan post was way too specific and accurate to not believe that the switch will be getting an upgrade/successor later this year. I thought it might drop with zelda but dropping it later and showing off upgraded visuals for previous games (zelda/pokemon) makes a lot of sense.

    I don't use handhelds (just not for me) so I'm still waiting for a stand alone switch that just connects to the tv like the ps tv for the exclusives. If we can have a full handheld only in the lite, then i think we should be able to have a tv only one too. Integrate the dock, remove the screen, battery and joycons. Throw in a pro controller.

    • @Adamtendo_player_1

      This will work. I think the current switch works so well because you’re given a choice of whether you want to play docked or handheld mode or tablet mode or tabletop mode as they call it. Why should we have choice removed because you don’t like handhelds? Your idea of an Nintendo Switch, the only connect to the TV will not come to fruition for me to switch lite it’s fine, not for me only for those that prefer the smaller screen and to be completely handheld, then the switch light makes a lot more sense than your switch tv.

So many rpgs, indie games & solid first party exclusives. It hasn't been perfect as I wouldn't call the console the best system for online multiplayer & I don't think the prices for Nintendo online especially the expansion pack are not worth for what you get.

    It is sad to see how much Nintendo has changed in 6 years. With the Wii U, the focus was on the first party games and using their quality to save the console sales. With the Switch the focus is on the marketing, on selling the same console over and over with different color combinations, on re-selling every Wii U game at full price, on renting emulated games behind an expensive subscription. Everything is more expensive than on the Wii U, everything you buy these days feels like a bit, or a lot, like a ripoff. Because, as you said very well, the typical Nintendo customer "will buy it anyway" and Nintendo is counting, now more than ever, on that. Times have changed.

    • @ThePreciseClimber
      @ThePreciseClimber ปีที่แล้ว +2

      > "re-selling every Wii U game at full price"
      Yeah, that's pretty weaksauce. I remember back on PS3 a PS2 re-release would only cost 10-15 bucks.
      Hell, the Nathan Drake Collection on PS4 was $60. That's still $20 per game instead of $60.
      And the price of Playstation and Xbox games actually lowers over time. Imagine that.

    • @PianistTanooki
      @PianistTanooki ปีที่แล้ว

      As a Wii U owner, that generation sucked. Many of the games were fine, but none of them ever panned out to be games where I felt "glad" for owning the system. The Wii U saw no exclusive Zelda game, no Metroid games, and the mainline entries to their longtime franchises such as Mario and Smash Bros. were… fine. But again, nothing spectacular. I was much happier with their Wii lineup, to be perfectly honest.
      The Switch launched with one of the best Zelda games, it gave me a Mario game that I'd been waiting over a decade for (Super Mario Odyssey), it saw the first mainline Metroid game since Metroid Fusion (a 19 year gap), not to mention the remastered version of Metroid Prime, and it saw a far more consistent lineup of games.
      No, I'm not going to defend them pulling shit like charging $60 for Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze on Switch when it was $50 on Wii U, but I'd much rather take today's Nintendo over what we had in the Wii U era. Wii U era was just downright depressing.

    • @starpier
      @starpier ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PianistTanooki Honestly speaking, for Zelda you were covered. Apart from Wind Waker and Twilight Princess, Breathe of the Wild was developed first and foremost for the Wii U and ported to the Switch at the last minute.
      The Wii U is the console with most Zelda games available. I understand you had to wait the end of the console cycle for an original game, but it was at least worth the wait.
      Bayonetta 2, the best game in the series, made me glad to own the console. Same happened when MK8 came out (original MK games on Switch are still missing).
      SM Odyssey is very good, indeed, but we had Super Mario 3D world which was just as excellent.
      If you look at the amount of original first party titles that came out during the Wii U era, you will notice they were significantly more than on the Switch. I was more than happy that Metroid came back on the Switch, but during the years before we saw mostly remasters or ports (BOTW) rather than original exclusive games. If you looked at the top selling games on the Switch, during the first years, you would find Wii U games at the top of the ranking.
      My biggest complaint about the Wii U is the lack of JRPGs (Xenoblade X and very little more) and the third party support (Square-Enix) to bring them to the console. In this regard the Switch made a better job for sure.
      Never the less, during the Wii U years, I felt Nintendo put us, the hardcore gamers, at the center of their plans. They tried to rip us off with the Amiibo or the DLCs of Super Smash Bros, sure, but for the most part they didnt treat us like walking ATMs. Can you say the same of the current Nintendo?

    I believe it's been announced that the chip inside the Switch, the Tegra X1 is no longer in production. The console has a ticking clock. Yeah they have tens of millions of Tegras still but those will run out eventually. I dunno if Nintendo could really stretch that supply to outsell the PS2.

  • @TSA_57

    Cool video! Ever since the first/second year of the Switch, when everyone saw it was a big success, I thought the successor would not come in a long while. Nintendo even said at the time they were planning for the Switch to have a long lifespan. To me, that meant 7 years, and after seeing the success, I thought to myself 8 years. But I never thought of your idea that it wouldn't be a full successor after that like the Game Boy Color.
    I think it holds a lot of merit, considering the PS5 and Xbox Series are already kind of like that. Just beefed up 8th generation consoles with *some* exclusive games. Gaming landscape has sort of evolved to this point where it's very easy to make things backwards compatible, much like with PCs.
    I also checked just to make sure that the Game Boy and Game Boy Color are indeed considered to be in different generations, despite them often being put together. So it's interesting to think the "Switch Pro" or what-have-you we're going to get could also be considered a 9th generation console/hybrid, and have the old Switch stay in the 8th generation. And maybe for the 10th generation Nintendo would be more or less in sync again with the competition.
    Will be really interesting to see if it ends up playing out this way.
    Also, for the Gamecube stuff you brought up decent points. It's something that really appeals to me, I'm 24 now, and I grew up with the Gamecube and Xbox. One thing I've always been very skeptical about though is them releasing Gamecube games for their Virtual Console or Online service.
    My argument for a long time was that they had the best ever chance to do it on the Wii U which could natively play Gamecube games, but they never offered any official way to play them. That could of course be because it was the Wii U, and they didn't see the marketability at the time. Maybe this is the time they see it.
    My main worry now however with a Gamecube Switch Online service would be the file sizes of the games. For all the other consoles they've brought back, the games have been tiny for modern standards, and they could get away with making you download a bunch at a time to have a library like that. Gamecube games average maybe 1 Gigabyte per game. I think that somewhat limits the logistics of such a project with the Switch's paltry internal storage.
    I think that would make it a harder sell, at least for me, with Switch game updates and DLC already taking a lot of that space. I have a 128Gb microSD card in it, but I don't like to rely on it too much. I doubt a big portion of the market likes to go out of their way to get these cards either.
    So I still don't think a Gamecube Switch Online would happen. It seems to me they would much rather release remasters of a lot of the games. But if it does happen, it would be very cool, even if I wouldn't take advantage of it myself. I don't wanna pay for the more expensive Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscription anyway.
    Have a nice day!

  • @mileshollis6258

    My guess is a VR headset for an updated model of the switch. Comes with a new dock that connects to a headset - it'd have to have more powerful hardware for the VR, which could mean native higher resolution for TVs & still plays switch games. Even if the VR aspect falls off in interest like the 3D of the 3DS did, you still get updated hardware that's backwards compatible, similar overall to the 3DS upgrade from the DS.
    I feel nintendo focuses strongly on 'delivering a new kind of experience' with each new device to justify the hardware upgrade, and this seems like a likely fit to me.

    Remember some old interview, maybe it was mr. Furukawa who mentioned how Nintendo had plans for Switch at least eight years worth of support? It was maybe on 2018 or 2019? Not sure and I cannot find it anymore.
    For that reason my prediction is that somekind of upgrade might hit shelves march 2025. Maybe similar upgrade that n3ds did compared to the regular 3ds.
    But to make this thing to work, Nintendo still needs to continue the support all the way. Really hoping that they would have courage to release new games to IPs they haven't done on Switch yet, like Kid Icarus, Wave Race, Star Fox, F-Zero or Pilotwings.
    The 3rd party support is getting thinner probably, less and less new demanding games that Switch just cannot handle well enough. I am kinda worried if more and more games will release as an cloud version on Switch, that would make consumers vote with their wallets.
