This is amazing. Back in the 1970's I controlled F-106's, F-101's, and F-4's and whenever they fired a missile they had to keep their onboard radar painting the target because that provided guidance to the missile. This, of course, had my guys vulnerable after missile launch. "Launch and forget" was not a thing. I love how much things have improved.
Of course it was nice to have the Genie with a nuclear warhead. That was launch and forget but only because it had no guidance system. Due to the size of its explosion it was more of a “launch and get away” scenario.

@Tracking Phoenix I keep seeing people mention that the f-18 datalink is better than the Viper. Could you explain in detail how? In my mind, just the datalink track altitude being shown all the time in the Viper is making it much quicker to work with. The radar outline and the radar cursor in the HSD certainly help as well.
The Hornets radar used to work as far as the Vipers but they nerfed it for realism IIRC. From what I've read on the forum the F16 should also get a nerf and should have a less capable radar than the Hornet. Also keep in mind there is no PRF setting selection for the F16 either and you can use that to help find targets in the Hornet.
This brings me back to my favorite mission from F-22 Lightning 3 where you had to scramble against multiple Blackjacks inbound with nukes to take out your base. But there were Migs and flankers already within strike distance of the base raining hell around you. You could see friendly SAMs returning fire and everything. Super cool
hey Growling, After your first fox you turn left. Wouldn't that put you in a very bad spot if it misses? If you turned right you would still have enough distance between you and the other 3 targets to engage the 1st target without having to worry about the others. Or am i missing something?

Basically, the plane's radar emits a cone of detection from the nose, and only what falls within that cone can be locked up. It's not fixed, however, and can rotate slightly on a gimbal. So, when he's locking a target at the gimbal limit, it means it's at the very edge of how far his radar can rotate (and therefore lock up a target). He did that here specifically to let him fire off a missile and turn away more quickly than if he had taken the time to get the target into the centre of the radar cone.
gimbol limit means the farthest u can point your nose away from your target while still targeting them with your radar. you do this to continue helping your missile reach the target while trying to defeat enemy missiles
@@barbaros99 thanks so much- so the radar cone has to be turned at an angle to lock it? what about in the rws (I think) mode where is it scanning the whole range?
@@sabadab0766 The radar cone doesn't have to be turned for a lock; your target just needs to be within that cone (ie: you're "going hot"). You can see him setting up the gimbal lock in the right side radar display at 4:45. The blue arc shows what his plane's radar can lock onto, and it's tilted to right (ie: the gimbal it's mounted on has rotated to the right). The reason he can pick up aircraft outside of that cone is due to his data link with another radar platform (either ground-based or AWACS) that can see a 360 degree view of the airspace and send the info to his onboard systems. He can't use that to lock up a bandit, but it helps his situational awareness.

well u said it there urself, it has to be fast, have fox 3s, and pull some hard gs lmao. it's not easy to maintain the sheer speed that the f16 does in its high-g maneuvers.

In real work TWIZ or TWS has a very limited use, TWS locks are easier to defeat and even in DCS are harder to maintain, seems STT locks are more reliable, and I only did TMS up 1 time which means I didn’t even hard lock them into a full STT but I did that cuz they were already so close I was confident even if the lock was broken the amraam would find them on it’s own.
