    Love your videos. I just started reading about picking in the last couple weeks. Took up the hobby a week ago and have been practicing two hours a night. I've picked a couple of locks laying around the house and this morning managed to pick my front door lock in under a minute. Such a satisfying feeling when it all "clicks"!

      Thank you, you did a GREAT job on this one. I put a package in the mail to you yesterday. BTW, I got the American padlock open. You were probably having trouble with it because the body and shackle were pinched together.

    Hi Bill, In pin position two the plug has been filed with a round file. We occasionally used to see this in old locks, as during the war brass was hard to come by, and if the "locksmith" only had too shorter pin and nothing to replace it, he often filed the plug to suit. It is not in any way an anti pick - just the opposite I guess. Regards, Brian.

    wow, what a beautiful looking lock from an aesthetic point of view. Its like Lock art!

  • @mikrobspen
    @mikrobspen 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    The plug was probably filed in chamber two to create a larger shear line. Many years ago a person rekeying a lock might not have a complete pin kit with every length of pin. If a pin was too long you would file it down (I have old Corbin pliers that were designed to hold a single pin to be filed). If your pin was too short you could file the plug to reach the top of the pin, thereby creating a larger shear line. Not a recommended locksmith procedure (as a larger shear line makes picking easier) but something I have seen many times.

    I wonder if magnetic keypins and drivers would help fool the picker...
    If they attract each other then it would feel like the pin is bound even when picked to the shear line encouraging an overset.

  • @Ralesk
    @Ralesk 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Beautiful, beautiful pins! With the super long key pins though (in 1 and 3) it feels like it's a bit of a waste, though who knows what those would have done if someone not knowing the bitting overset them...

    Still too new here to understand what you meant when you said it would have been more difficult if #2 had been "threaded". Was still fun to see you NOT get into this one in 2 seconds! ;) thanks for the learning

    The Groove is for if you don't have a long enough pin you'd file the hole down to fit the pin if that makes any sense

      +Den Brass I'm really new to this art, but from the videos I have seen, your work on the pins has been the most impressive so far. I can only begin to imagine the intricacies needed to produce such work.
      Congrats sir, real skill.

    That notch on the cylinder at #2 essentially makes the shear line sloppy and easier to pick.

    I think groove on top would work with a deep spool allowing it to rotate to a deep fault set and seal off the core and top would only rotate till ledge.... least that's my idea

  • @dangerrangerlstc
    @dangerrangerlstc 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I am by no means a lock pic pro, but I was just looking at this as someone who has no experience. You often talk about threading the holes to give something for spools to catch on. Would it be possible to use machine screws small enough to pass through the threaded hole as a driver pin? With the head cut off of course. Seems like a quick easy way to make pins without having to get detailed with a file and dremel.

    • @HelenaOfDetroit
      @HelenaOfDetroit 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's possible, but machine screws don't hold as much pressure on the threads. Which basically means it's easy for them to get "smushed" and flattened by picking or even just by using the key. Once that happens, then they are essentially just a regular pin.

  • @arthurmiller4806
    @arthurmiller4806 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    also please make some video about cutting keys on the machine anyway keep up the work on the videos I like them.iam learning to become a locksmith and you are helping me thank-you.

      I think TBD means "to be determined". I mean I dont think that, thats what it means. I think it just means the winner hasnt been chosen yet although something I find weird is that most of the time the pick kits end up going to professional locksmith services so I dunno.

  • @jfett737
    @jfett737 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    hey Bill. stupid question for ya. as I am learning how to read key biting to picking would the deep pins one and two basically mean you wouldn't have to really touch them much. their travel (to me) us pretty much nothing? or do I have it backwards jn my head?

    • @bosnianbill
      @bosnianbill  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends on the lock manufacturer. Some use 1-2 to indicate shallow cuts, while others use 1-2 to indicate deep cuts... If that isn't confusing enough, some number the pins from bow to tip, and others use the opposite. What I'm saying is there is no right answer...

    Have you ever tried "threaded" pins instead of serrated pins, with matching threads in core or bible? Or would that make the key bind up too much?
