@@mattkessler-revelo I got my first compass when i was 12 or 13 from my brother a forester by trade. At 16 i joined CAN CADET CORP my most detailed training, then in mid 20s, maritime navigation. I still have that first Silva compass its 50 years old now.

I guess I'm old school be it in a canoe, on a mountain range, 4hr trip or month long adventure. I always take a map and compass, NO BATTERIES required
