Thats what makes this whole movie awesome. And the sequel. The intensity and pace of the fights is off the charts. You really believe that those guys are in for the kill. I can remember, after the first time i've seen the first raid, I rewatched the first ong-bak and only then I realized how slow and deliberately paced to a certain rhythm the fights were with lots of pauses in between moves, lots of stances. The raid ruined ong bak for me forever.

BadS breathing techniques if used on a daily bases can make you do some superhuman shit. Great example is that guy called “the ice man” he has 27 WR and even has his own breathing technique. Humans are great at adapting

Probably one my favorite fights in both Raid movies. And let’s not forget. Mad Dog was totally whooping their asses. In a 2 vs 1 fight 😂🤣😅 as much as I usually root for the good guy, Rama and his brother were getting their asses kicked. They totally got lucky with that broken light bulb. IMO.
Indonesia has really relaxed labor laws when it comes to stuntmen so most of the moves you see are done at full speed and power, they just try to tap instead of hitting through the target though. Less painful that way
What I love about this director and these actors is that they're good enough for the director to not use those quick cuts and up-close shots like the disgusting cinematography in RE5. They kept the camera away and you can tell it was all just a single take or two.

If y’all didn’t know. This fight scene inspired some of the choreography for Iron Man v Cap America and Bucky in Civil War. (The Russo brothers favorite movies at the time were The Raid movies)
If you guys saw the movie, you would see what type of character mad dog is. He is truly the crazy "stupid" cocky type. He had a gun aimed at one of the good guys (their leader) but he slowly brings him to a secluded room, puts the gun down and tells him that he prefers killing with his fists cause the rush is more enjoyable. That scene made him seem like the joker for one minute. So even in this fight scene where you see them picking each other up at certain parts when they were on the ground, it's like they were still honoring the "hand to hand combat rules" of fight me until you can't fight anymore right up till the end where he won and the good guys had to "cheat" (use a weapon) in order to win the fight. Cause if he wanted to, mad dog could have shot all of them with his gun. and he didn't even need to untie the other guy. But yeah, fucking adrenaline pumping movie from start to finish.
He's not stupid. Mad dog is written to be a psychopath who likes to feel blood on his skin. He find amusement in making his preys hurt, scared, desperate and fight to death rather than granting them a fast end. That makes his character scarier than others

To answer your question about why it looks so real, it's because for the most part these stunt guys are actually taking full blows to the head / body. Safer that way so that it doesn't mess up a shot if you're the only one missing / rolling off a punch / kick.

If you take one of those punches like that, its game over man. Now in a life or death situation, the adrenaline rush can make you take a few more of those but still, even with an adrenaline rush and a life or death situation, you would not be fighting for this long when you just got punched into the liver, stomache and i cant even count how many times in the face.
I worked at a theater when this came out. This fight got a standing ovation from the crowd.
