When I saw this, I thought it was the greatest action movie I had ever seen. Then I saw the sequel.
The sequel is utterly exhausting, and I mean that in the best possible sense. It's just like, "how many action scenes can we fit into a 120 minute long film... oh the answer is 8? Let's do 16!"
My son refers to this film as “The Action film by which all other action films should be judged”.
Bro Rama fought non stop for multiple floors before he got to Mad Dog. He was at a massive disadvantage vs a Mad Dogg that only had 1 fight before this. Mad Dog was a different breed though. The Raid 2 is even better and shows what Rama is truly capable of.
right, i think if Rama in his prime condition he would give Mad Dog a hard challenge in 1 v 1. but again, he is called Mad Dog for a reason.
There's an interesting story of how the movie came to be in the first place: Gareth Evans, a director and cameraman from UK traveled to Indonesia to film documentaries, but he was so fascinated with Iko Uwais' martial skills that he decided to make a full-length movie. I'm so happy they managed to do it.
Pardon my English, I'm not a native speaker.
I disagree. Your English is so good I wouldn’t have known if you hadn’t stated otherwise.
Gareth married an Indonesian after meeting her at university. There was no opportunity to make action movies in Wales so they moved to Indonesia where he met the gang. Iko Uwais (Rama) and Andi are both in his first film Merantau which is a very slow and meditative film compared to this one. They also both appeared in The Force Awakens on Han & Chewie's salvager.
*Further proving that anyone named Gareth is utter rubbish.* Gareth Edwards, Gareth David-Lloyd, Gareth from The Office.
3:28 Sam: "I wonder how brutal this is going to be."
Me: "YOU HAVE NO IDEA."
The fight choreography is insane in these movies
Joe Taslim, who played Jaka was Sub-Zero in the most recent "Mortal Kombat."
Mad Dog was the fight choreographer, and folks loved him so much that he came back in the next movie as a different character.
Man's used to train Paspampres, Indonesia's equivalent of the Secret Service (president's bodyguards).
iirc, he was the actual main antagonist in the second film (the actor, not the character). They already made and trained the final fight, I've seen the footage on youtube. But apparently they don't have enough budget to make the movie after all, so they decided to create a much cheaper 'promotional video' to raise budget, and the promo was the movie you just watched. The Mad Dog actor had to portray the villain here, and would be weird if he returned as another character in the actual movie, so they recasted the villain role. And as you said, Mad Dog popularity unpredictably went through the roof, so they created a new character for him to return.
The sequel is even better, one of the best action movies ever.
It is aptly compared like The Godfather Part II to The Godfather.
The Raid 1 is excellent, incredible film. The Raid 2 is a masterpiece.
agreed, this film is insane, but to me it felt more like a flex of all the people involved, you know, director, stuntmen, fight choreographers etc. Berandal does the same but expands the story and characters, it feels like an actual movie. 😁in any case, they're both fucking awesome.
32:54 "Mad dog deserved to live..."
Raid 2: hold my beer!
@@C.N.R_SportsChanel His name is Yayan Ruhian, aka Kang Yayan. He played Mad Dog in the first movie, as Prakoso in the second movie
It's still criminal we never got the Gareth Evans Deathstroke movie. You guys should watch The Night Comes For Us, too.
The Raid 2 is the greatest action movie ever. Also watch Chocolate.
aww a man of culture, I have also seen Chocolate back when Netflix still had it.
@@steefisgod3917 Yes, THE NIGHT COMES FOR US is the best of the three.
The action, the story, and the choreo is top notch.
7:48 I don't remember the technical reason, but the director's commentary said that they weren't able to actually film that slow mo shot of firing the shotgun in slow motion, so the actor had to mime it in slow motion, and the muzzle blast was added in post production.
Just say "door kill" to anyone who's watched this movie, and watch the pain on their face. 😆
I remember when this movie came out. Almost immediately, bootlegs were being passed around by fans like it was the hot new drug everybody had to try. The Raid had such a massive impact on action filmmakers that we definitely wouldn't have John Wick or *its* imitators without this movie. In fact, Yayan Ruhian (who plays Mad Dog here) and Cecep Arif Rahman (from The Raid 2) both cameo in JW3 to give Keanu the business.
Did you guys recognize that mad dog was one of the two guys who fought with John Wick in that glass room?
They will see the other guy soon too^^ Really Iko Uwais is missing in the John Wick world! 😢🙏
I saw this and Dredd back to back, one of the best nights of movie watching ever
If you enjoy the action sequences and fight choreography in this film, Raid 2 turns it up to 11. The budget for this movie was only about $1,000,000 and the story that was originally planned had to be rewritten and actually ended up as part of Raid 2 due to the budget constraints for this movie.
This is an Indonesian film. They are using a martial art called “Penkat Silat”
It is the #1 deadliest martial art in the world. This martial art is ONLY used for killing and maiming. In training for this martial art you need to defend against 2 or more knife attackers at once.
*Pencak Silat. The competion are very funny to watch. Looks like dancing routine and the martial artists do it with real weapon.
th-cam.com/video/8H0x1AKlpM4/w-d-xo.htmlsi=6H7MnDtibn0Se5KT
Pencak Silat is the regulated form and more artistic. While the original, the more dangerous, the "dirty" form is called Silat. So it's two different types of Silat.
Ah yes, the 4 stages of watching The Raid. (°_°) (°o°) (°O°) (O__O)
Easily the best depiction of Pencak Silat in cinema. It's a very interesting martial art (as is the Malaysian form, just known as Silat), but relatively unknown outside of SE Asia before The Raid released.
For another hard hitting martial arts extravaganza - The Protector, with Muay Thai phenom Tony Jaa
It is the art of lethal striking with knees and elbows I was informed. You really see that in Mad Dog's style.
I love seeing “Jaka” blow up the way he has the last few years. He was amazing as Sub Zero.
@@andyandys5356 That’s probably his best role! Sucks that show ended!
I love his resting bitch eyes in that. lol he was so good in both these movies
That rection at 17:39 is what we were all waiting for. It's a great bit of SFX and stunt-work. REALLY makes you feel it. Edit: AND the one at 18:41 lol
There's a really cool movie that came out in 2008 called Chocolate. An autistic girl learns martial arts by living next to a school that teaches it.
I coincidentally rewatched Chocolate just a few days ago. Awesome movie! And Yanin „Jeeja“ Vismitananda is amazing!!
So glad you two are reacting to this movie! It's hands down one of the best action/martial arts/crime drama films ever made! And straight up hardcore!
Now you're obligated to watch the sequel, it's wayyy better than the original and that shows how top tier it is surpassing this piece of fine cinema
It's such a different film I wouldn't say it's way better. This is just a pure action film and Raid 2 is more of a gangster/action movie
I liked this movie more than the second one.
Although the second one has the best fight scene of both movies, imo.
To me they are like The Godfather and Godfather 2 for action films. So well done.
I can't imagine how hard this was to edit for TH-cam. Great reaction guys.
I really hope you guys watch the second one as well really builds on top of an already amazing movie.
The sequel is probably one of the best action films of the last ten years. You’re in for a massive treat.
The two on one fight with mad dog is so good.
What John Wick is for guns The Raid is for hand to hand combat
The Raid movies have absolute contempt for knee ligaments 😂
Fun fact : Iko uwais (Rama) is actually broke his ligaments in the making of the raid
"I wonder how brutal this is going to be."
The answer is yes.
wow finally, i have been waiting so long for you reacting to the raid... lets go...
also "the raid" is the original title, for some reason it got changed to "the raid: redemption" for the US market
Now you have to watch Raid 2. One of the greatest sequels ever made.
When this hit the states in springtime of 2012, done deal.
One of the most influential action films ever.
Following the buzz and it's debut at the Toronto International Film Festival.
This was the next new phenomenon and we wanted more.
Very few theaters had it.
But the DVD, On demand markets made sure it was available for major viewing.
In those days of the 2010s, Guerilla filmmaking at it's finest.
Iko Uwais and others physical dynamos involved with this are still the future of action.
Oh boy, after Crouching Tiger, I wanted to see your reaction to this, just to feel the contrast between them!
The choreography is 🔥
The Raid 2 is one of the most violent movies I've ever seen
I recommend the 2003 action film "Ong-Bak: Thai Warrior" which also has a "Mad Dog" and a fridge involved in a fight.
I love this movie. The action scenes are so fluid. The little guy with the long hair was the fight coordinator for this and its sequel. Also, the main group of actors in this movie also show up as the raiders in Star Wars Episode 7 who board the Millennium Falcon looking for Han with those weird octopus things. Lastly, this movie gets credited for being the inspiration for “Dredd,” since that movie, while awesome, is pretty much a carbon copy of “The Raid.”
I don't know why, 'Dredd' was written in 2007/2008 and filmed in 2010, just unfortunate timing of being released after The Raid.
Yes, This Movie the Raid more more realistic. Absolutely Amazing Ever
one of my fave theatres experiences. we werent prepared for some of these fight scenes. unless i missed it in this video, if it was even included, is it this movie or Ong Bak that has a fight scene where someone smashes someones head into a wall three times, and the camera follows each hit all the way down lol i swear it was this movie
Ong Bak had some brutal hits and it's actually my favorite Tony Jaa movie. The Protector was cool and had a bigger budget, but I preferred the smaller scale close-in fighting of Ong Bak.
This is an amazing movie with awesome fight choreography...great reaction as usual y'all.
You'll never hear the end of it if you don't watch The Raid 2, it's just as awesome, picks up right after the first one. in fact there's a deleted scene for it called 'Gang War' on TH-cam that contains no main cast or spoilers so can be watched as a teaser, and you'll think 'holy fuck, if this is what got cut out what got left in' haha. Also there's another movie that preceded The Raid films called 'Merantau' by the same director if you want more Iko Uwais ass kickery action.
The Raid stars also got used in many other movies and shows following these, they were Kanjiklub in The Force Awakens right out the gate.
Great reaction, so happy you finally took the plunge, I knew you wouldn't regret it, in fact you'll watch it many more times in future I'm sure. 😃
This movie and Judge Dredd are very similar and they're both awesome in their own way. The sequel to this film is so much more ambitious and quite a bit better than the original. I hope you get to see it soon. Cheers.
The raid 2 is a must now lol they had a lot more money to play with in the next one. One of the best action movies ever imo.
I was one of the first people to see this film in the U.S., as I seen it at a film festival with a small audience and I got to meet the director. After I seen it, I was telling everyone I know to seek out this film. It has since been declared a modern action classic. And yes, I think the sequel is even better and is a classic in its own right.
I have never heard a cinema audience make as much noise as they did through this masterpiece.
Director Gareth Evans is Welsh. The sequel is even more brilliant, I'd call it the Godfather of all action movies. He uses camera angles and camera movements in fight choreography that nobody has thought of.
Evans also did Apostle which is mind blowing and a TV series called Gangs of London which is as hard hitting as this. He also did a short horror movie on the anthogy movie V/H/S/ 2. One of my fave directors.
Ok like the others have said, the sequel is one of theeeee best action films Period.
What's even more impressive is that this isn't even the movie they wanted to make. They originally wanted to make a movie called Berandal but couldn't get funding so they made this lower budget film almost like a proof of concept. When it turned out so well they were given funding to make a sequel so the re-jigged the original project they wanted, Berandal to tie in with The Raid and called it The Raid 2
Gareth Evans also directed the folk horror film Apostle. Currently on Netflix. I hear his UK Crime series Gangs of London is fantastic.
I was waiting for their reaction on the "broken door takedown" move... didn't disappoint. 😁
Hope you guys watch the sequel. One of the greatest action movies ever made.
It was fun watching this again with you guys. I saw this in the movies 2 times and I loved it. The second one does not disappoint! That’s all I’m gonna say. Great reaction.
The best action film!
Its just such great pleasure to watch actual martial artists duking it out with wide shots instead quick pace close ups and constantly changing camera angles every 2-3 seconds to hide stunt performers that most Hollywood films are full off.
Mad Dog actor is also the fight choreographer for the movie.
Ok!!!!! Nice! This is the first one. I thought y’all went straight to the second one. And I was so ready to say “ you guys should definitely watch the first one!”😂😂😂😂😂
Hell yeah! What a surprise. Best action film I've seen in a looong while.
Yes such a classic that redefined action just before John wick. Such a classic
If you liked this one you'd adore the sequel the final knife fight is still my favorite
On to part two. Sooner rather than later, hopefully.
I remember watching this movie for the first time and like 20min in thinking "they really frontloaded the action to grab our attention, didn't they ?" NOPE ! The pace is just on another level and it's so fun !
Gonna jump on the hype train for the second film. It gets SOOOOO much better.
Mad Dog. Remember the name.
Thank you again for finally reacting to this. But the sequel... MY GOD. You have to finish the story, like Cody Rhodes. 🤣
So happy they're reacting to this movie. I used to go to the latest times in theaters growing up.(Late night drives are therapeutic.) I went to watch this movie randomly with no knowledge and left completely amazed. So glad I saw this on the big screen of an empty theater.
The Raid: Redemption soundtrack/score was composed by Linkin Park's co-vocalist Mike Shinoda, who also serves as producer for the album along with Joseph Trapanese.
But authentic previous sountrack's version has been more "indie" and I prefer that 1st version instead of later re-imagination with Shinoda. 1st one perfectly fits to the whole harsh tone of the movie.
I saw this at the cinema when it first came out. The buzz in the auditorium was amazing and when the mad dog vs the brothers fight ended everyone was clapping and cheering. It was like we had been collectively holding our breath. Oh and totally agree about the fridge scene, beautiful.
Yayan Ruhian aka Mad Dog was in John Wick 3 in the second last fight scene.
He is one of the great martial artists to come out of Indonesia.
Of course, you MUST watch "The Raid 2: Berandal" (2014) but I also recommend "The Night Comes For Us" (2018) starring Joe Taslim (who played Jaka in "The Raid") as the main protagonist, Iko Uwais (who played Rama in "The Raid"), and Julie Estelle (who will make a big impression on you in "The Raid 2").
I love this film. Mad Dog is so awesome. This movie got more reaction out of me than most. The scene when he kills the guy by leaping with him and driving his throat down onto those splinters made me yell.
The Raid 2 is worth it. But you might also like to know that a couple of the same faces appear in a Netflix action film called The Night Comes for Us. And my memory says... it has the same fight coordinator too?
Now you need to finish the story, with the movie that director Gareth Evans really wanted to make. "The Raid 2" is a masterpiece of action and direction.
"Push the light bulb in further!" 😄 🤣 Dan you crack me up mate hahaha 👏
Awesome review, guys!! I first watched your review of the "7 Samurai," and i enjoyed it as much as i enjoyed this review of one of the greatest actions films ever made. Great points of the memorable scenes of this film and looking forward to your review of the The Raid 2. Keep up the great work, and if i may, I would like to recommend 2 South Korean films that are really great - I Saw the Devil and The Man From Nowhere. You guys won't regret it!! Take care and greetings from California 😊
These movies are brutal.
I could've sworn you guys reacted to this before! Huh. Guess I'm in for a great reaction :D
16:28 Subtitle is wrong there, he's saying that if he *DID NOT* believed that, he wouldn't have opened the door.
I'm Indonesia amd I'm Proud of Silat, Iko Uwais and the Raid!
Unsurprisingly, Yaya Ruhian, who plays Mad Dog in this, used to train Indonesian special forces in hand-to-hand combat. Also, you guys have still not reacted to Once Upon A Time In The West.
TBR:”A little piece of light?” Samantha: “Bulb!” TBR: “Bulb, lol!”😂😂😂😂😂No idea why always catch those little interactions!
after this you need to watch the raid 2 and another iko's movie, the night comes for us...its more brutal
my two favorites for fights scenes are The Raid: Redemption and Man from nowhere. just so good.
I'm was very pleasantly surprised to see this reaction on my feed, I love this movie!
I will say this……there is a kitchen fight in the second one that is one of the best fights I’ve ever seen!
Hope you two are having an great and awesome day ❤
The captions were tough but that was very entertaining.
the dor kill was nasty
If you liked it I recommend Gangs of London. Tv series created by Gareth Evans (director of The Raid)
Remember, Dreadd shot almost two whole years earlier, these two flicks came out the same year, and the only reason they were “shot at the same time” was for the added 3d effects… by now Oscar winner Alex Garland. I worked on this flick in Africa. The director was about as smart as a desk lamp. Nothing on set worked yet he approved everything. Anytime I see a working computer monitor on screen I think “well done effects house.”
The next Asian action movies you two MUST watch are:
#title "S.P.L." (aka Kill Zone) - 2005
#title "Kill Zone 2" - 2015
#title "The Protector" (aka Tom Yum Goong) - 2005
#title "Hard Boiled" - 1992
#title "Skin Trade" - 2014
#title "Kung Fu Killer" (aka Kung Fu Jungle) - 2014
All amazing films!
I'm sure it's been mentioned 100 times already, but the second film has even better fight choregraphy and camerawork.
I went to see this in theaters with a couple friends when it came out. We were the only ones in the theater, but it was one of the best theatrical experiences of my life. By the end of the climactic fight we were screaming from excitement
What John Wick is for guns, The Raid is to hand to hand fights. Its the most under appreciated movies ever in my opinion.
Alright Here We Go Watching The Raid Redemption 🎉🎉🎉🎉 What A Great Indonesian Action Movie You Should Check Out The Sequel The Raid 2
So the guy who plays Mad Dog is a well renowned stunt/fight choreographer in Indonesia, but is also a highly skilled Silat(this type of martial arts) instructor. Also, served on government security, or at least trained them
I can only imagine the injuries most of the cast went thru making this awesome action film.
All action movies can now be classified as pre-Raid or post-Raid.
Yeah, but you can equally compare movies to pre or post Titanic. You're just getting overly specific.
*Nope. This is badly made "gun-fu" movie imitating Chow Yun-Fat's The Killer (1989) and Hard Boiled (1992) but without a hero to root for.*
@@hulkhatepunybannershame no one thinks like you do or maybe because you're wrong
