please keep making more videos like this. its really super helpful and makes me want to play guitar more. I'm 29 and ive been playing since i was 14, thats more than half my life! pretty crazy to realize that, i've never done anything this long, actually. anyway ive spent most of my guitaring years playing the same stuff over and over slowly getting better and learning new techniques here and there. i just recently started slapping, this video really drove home some points that i was starting to figure out on my own. you're a legend brah. thanks for slappin huard
Just started working on Guile's theme and I have been struggling with this. This video was a perfect help. I am indeed a beginner all over again. Thanks.
Good stuff. After 13 years of playing melodic metal on electric guitar, I finally wanted to get into chord melody and your videos and tab database on Patreon are helping me learn some new tricks. Keep up the good work.
This tutorial came at the perfect time for me as I am learning a piece with thumb slap and flick together. I was confused how to do it. Then getting it down is like returning to being a beginner. When I heard the recording I thought they were using the sound of a metronome but as you explain, if you slap the strings against the fretboard you get that great percussive sound. Thank you for explaining it really thoughtfully.
THANK YOU SO MUCH! I was trying to play Jonathan Edward's Sunshine and slapping all my strings and wasn't keeping up with the rhythm. Focusing on the thumb hitting the low E string is a game changer.
Bro, thanks so much Sam! I've been searching for years for someone to explain slapping while playing the melody, but this one is definitely the best. This will help me so much when I practice!
SLAPP LIKE NOW! I needed this one, as I'm trying to learn it to use it on my compositions, and start a war against Davie504 hahahahaha when I get to a good level.
SAM THANK U FOR THIS VIDEO Realizing I needed to add a flick to hit individual notes instead of whole chords helped me realize this technique so now I can refine it! I’ve been meaning to add this ti my repertoire for a while man.
Thanks for this man. I've always had such a hard time with this technique and it's always limited what I can learn. This helped a lot, even for someone who has been playing guitar for 20+ years. Please keep making these kind of tutorial videos. The way you explain everything is very easy to understand. Keep it up dude. Also can I request A Cool Reception from Shovel Knight? Easily my favorite track from that amazing OST.
Interesting. If you watch Lucas Brar, for example, he does percussion with his right hand in a way that allows him to pluck the strings as normal. Additionally, with his technique you can have percussion even while plucking the low E string. Both methods seem to have their uses, but I think it’d be interesting to see what you have to say about this other method as well.
So helpful!. I've watched other videos, and yours is the most clarifying as to what you're really trying to accomplish with this technique. Thx so much!
I really love the way you're making this series of "guitar lesson"! God tham bro! You made me laugh while I was slapping my guitar! You're the man! Love you!
Thx for this! I have only learned f a classical teacher and play intermediate level -looking to enhance that of course, but grateful your teaching is totally articulate and mirrors where I am approaching this from. One in a million! Thx algorithm subscribed💯
I used to dread and get so frustrated from strings ringing out that I didn't want to play. Now I've realized that it's just another huge area of skills to learn; you've gotta get creative as Sam said. You have a toolkit that can help you mute those strings, and you use creativity to find the best way for you. There's often many ways to go about it. Love the vid Sam! Definitely have to try this out.
I've been doing this for several years. I just kind of picked it up on my own, so I learned it kind of slowly. I'm still not amazing at it, but it is really cool to do. I think I originally learned it because of certain songs that did it and I wanted to try it. There's also even crazier slapping, like what Andy Mckee does (I like his song "Drifting"). Also, Ioved the Davie504 reference. Before I clicked on the video, the thumbnail and title made me think of him. He's such an amazing bass player!
Great video! The moment I heard your BOB OMB Battlefield I just knew I had to learn it, because it IS the perfect guitar arrangement for that song. I ended up figuring all these stuff by myself and getting the slap flick mute was the hardest part... Worth it tho!
Bro this was super useful and well taught. Thank you. I’ve been doing it all wrong, making a weird slapping sound with my nails against the strings vs the strings hitting the frets like you taught. It all makes sense now!
dude thanks for making this vid, I ended up figuring out the slap+flick after trying to learn ur gweelee theme arrangement and thinking there had to be a better way than slap+pluck lol, so I went back to check how you were doing it
There is actually different way of snare + melody. You need to lay finger(s) on certain strings before incoming snare and then pull it/them together with the snare twisting whole hand. I may video response with this later.
You're such a good teacher! I'm trying to learn some John Mayer songs that use slaps and am running into that problem with bumping into strings I don't want to ring.. Gonna give the muting technique a try !
First? A big THANKS for the best slap-technique video on YT. I've tried to find something like this forever - and you finally did it. Second a question... Instead of "Flick" why not a Free Stroke with A, M, or I??
Ha I had to figure out myself how you were doing those more advanced slaps watching you in slow-mo. I'm glad you covered this!! It is super tough at first but I'm getting a lot better at it. Very helpful tips here . ty
Thank you so much for this! There's so many of your tabs that I can't play because of my lack of slappitude. Off to go practice my thumbin'! Soon I'll be like that guy with the giant thumb from Mighty Boosh! You da best!!
lol, i've been trying to play guitar, my fingers are not made for it, they are not nimble but i still enjoy my beginner style playing, also kinda like how you started off with the classic Davie504 intro
You and Beyond the Guitar need to collab on some stuff. Like trade vids or something. It's like Batman and Joker coming together to solve a mystery... Superman and Lex Luthor... Link and Ganon... Hunters and vegans... you get the idea.
Haha who else liked the video and subscribed before the end and started rolling just for that I had to slap the bell 🤣 ya got me mate and thanks for the amazing content
Have you tried instead of slapping it like this, which results in a really loud "thud", just gently tapping the strings like Kent Nishimura does? Even his sound is a bit loud, but the harsh/loudness of all this slapping is kinda distracting. I realize your technique may be much easier to master than the softer tapping technique.
Sam! I got some of your tabs but they are a little too hard for me, i understand they are advanced. but I wanted to ask for your recomendation on some beginner pieces, that being your arrangements or just another song that you recommend. thanks a lot in advance, cheers
as a piano player we have keys to hit all the notes...I look at guitar and its like u open the raw belly of a piano and all the strings are just there and you gotta find all the notes and hold those strings down...I can't do it. really cool and wish I had started on guitar young but my parents didn't want me to be a rocker
Flying battery sonic 3 and knuckles please do a cover. All I have is an acoustic now and I'm trying to figure out this song. I wanna mix the bass and guitar parts into one if possible
who else knew before clicking on this that it would have a Davie reference hahaha
100%
Approved.
i want to like the comment but 69 is a davie reference
everyone.
Pretty sure he owns the word slap at this point
Besides being hilarious, you're actually a damn good teacher. More!
Thank you for this. People like you who willingly give up their time to help other people out don't get enough credit so seriously thank you.
Appreciate those new editing skills! You've come a long way, Sam :)
Greetings from Germany! 😊

i'm so happy i can finally know how to properly give my guitar a good slap - thank you, sam!
Thank you, this is tough and cramps the hell out of my hand. I need to learn this, its tough controlling the sound. I'm glad you made this video!

Word. Left hand muting is like half of all guitar playing. Nice!
Despite the humor, this is actually a super solid lesson. Nice one, bro!

"Usually it's gonna be the index finger but get comfortable with that middle finger too." Words to live by
The intro had me laughing my buttocks off! I swear, if you close your eyes and hear it you'd think it was 504 himself.
