  • Teenage Engineering just released a 6 stereo channel, battery-powered mixing console about the size of an external hard drive! And yes, this thing is prohibitively expensive! So let’s talk about who is this thing is actually for. Just how versatile is a product at this price point?
    Thank you so much for joining me here on ShinesTV!

    I’ll tell you exactly who it’s for. Have you ever been to a chiptune concert? There is a concert that originated in Australia and also goes to Japan called Square sounds and a lot of Chip tune musicians will use a music app on their modded DMG Gameboy and a pocket operator or two but unfortunately at least back in the day there was no mini mixer so they would have to plug stereo cables directly into the main mixer for the club now we have a tiny mixer that can fit in your pocket. Many of the chiptune artists just kept their game boy and pocket operators and when the opz came out, in a little shoulder bag so that’s what this is for.

      I'll check that out, thanks!! I really dig chiptune stuff and have been learning how to use the music engine for the Playdate console. Hope to have some videos on that soon!

    It's cool, ngl. Would never be something for me when comparing the price to what you get, especially because I am not very portability focused, but the idea and design is of course very teenage engineering, which means very cool :) About the drum maschine/synthesizer/sequenzer part... well, if we agree to not call this whole thing a gimmick, then I will at least have to call that part one. Doesn't seem to be such well of a developed idea with the sequences being pre-programmed and stuff, the synth also really does feel quite toylike for me, like they had to stuff something else in there.

    • @ShinesTV
      @ShinesTV  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agreed 100% AFK Pilot! A fun product for sure, but that price is going to turn many people away when this could have been the best portable mixer for the masses.

    The way I see it, they can charge whatever they want. Leave it to the masses to vote with their money. IMHO people getting upset over price is pretty wild. After all, if you feel that strongly over the recent product prices, don't buy it and be done with it. But seems people really REALLY need to make the price a huge issue and create so much negative backlash. So I see it as, those people complaining really WANT to buy it, but can't. So let that sink in...the products "are" desirable, but unaffordable. I make this distinction because it seems a lot of people are pitching their negative criticisms as TE making lifestyle products and nothing more. I don't think that's accurate.

    Ordered one today (lucky to find one 'cos they've sold out). Just to answer your 'who's it for'? answers:
    1) DAWless- definitely not. I'm getting one because it's capable of multitracking 12 mono / 6 stereo signals INTO a DAW (like Logic hopefully)
    2) Drum machine - not really interested tbh
    3) Portability- 100%. Not just a little bit of portability though- crazy portability even just around your own studio. Until Jan I was using a Focusrite Saffire Pro40 8in8 (which I loved) but on an old laptop still IOS compatible w/ Focusrite's firmware (ba-powwww). All those interfaces though are pretty chunky so you don't move them around much- which means your laptop is only as far away from the interface as the longest firewire / thunderbolt / etc. cable you can get. Not anymore baby! Now my (potential) 12 input multi track interface is constantly near my laptop (powered by my laptop) so I can hop around the studio to whatever gear and plug it in direct w/out shifting gear or running long leads all to that chunky interface I'm too lazy to move.
    Who do I reckon it's for?
    1) This thing has 'Eurorack' written all over it. Even a modest Eurorack setup might have 4 or 5 voices coming out of it at once that you want to multi track record into a DAW and pick apart later on... this can do twelve at once. 4 of those might be Pocket Operators synced to the Eurorack, who cares?
    2) Me- cos I was about to drop $2K on a 2nd hand Focusrite Scarlett but this thing is heaps more convenient!

    • @ShinesTV

      @@sixdonuts yeah definitely not if you're using a tower but laptops are ultra portable.. I'm a TE fanboy for sure but, really, you could probably get a bunch of the functions that I want out of it just using a Zoom H6- in Australia you can pick them up new for AU$500 which is like a quarter of the price!!
