    Nessun Dorma, transcribed for solo piano. "Nessun Dorma" has to be one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written. Puccini outdid himself! I've always wanted a piano arrangement of this aria that didn't stray too far from the original, but also really allows the pianist to have their own exclamation of "vincerò" at the end of the piece, with the grandest writing possible but that doesn't obscure the actual melodic and harmonic movement. I hope you enjoy this dive, my first, into transcribing arias from opera for solo piano! If you enjoy these classical arrangements, be sure and check out my others, linked below.

    This is beautiful!! I love the rise and fall of the shimmering sparkling textures. I'm actually quite surprised at how this arrangement is paradoxically very different from the original, yet so close to the original. It sounds like John Bayless's arrangement could've inspired this to some degree. Looking at the score and listening to this, its impressive how you've managed to weave the multiple concurrent melodies, harmonies and sparkling textures all together within the limits of two hands. BRAVOOOOO!!!!!!

      @@WSJade It looks like we will start the work on April 13! 8 of my hammers need to be removed and sent in for the company we are using to do the "prehang" of the new ones along the correct geometry for the instrument. So I'll be without a playable piano until the new hammers are all done and shipped back. They are also waiting on ordering my Renner parts until they get my samples so they order the right "size" blue point hammers for my instrument.
      So my hammers will be pulled on the 13th... the top 3 octaves' strings will also be removed that day. We will see how much more can happen right away. The capo bar will get sanded as possible as possible, and then we will also restring with fresh wire as soon as possible to help stabilize the whole register before the new hammers get shipped in.

      I'd love to! My acoustic at home has been struggling with 3 broken strings since the beginning of the year, and an upper register that isn't staying in tune for much more than a day or two. I've already had my tech out to work on the piano 4 times in just 3 months! That's why this and the other new arrangements this year are all recorded on my keyboard instead.

    • @HS-wp5vb
      @HS-wp5vb 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@CharlesSzczepanek Mhm, rather unusual for a Kawai. Maybe too much pressure on the strings? Or lack of moisture in the air? Could be an idea to tune the piano a bit below 440 Hrz. Anyway, the keyboard sounds stunning, too.

    • @CharlesSzczepanek
      @CharlesSzczepanek  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@HS-wp5vb It was a combination of a few things that have since been addressed! First off, the strings were mostly original and 23 years old, so they'd lost a lot of elasticity. That loss was one contributing factor to both the tuning stability and the breakage. The uppermost 3 octaves got all new string put on.
      Because of somewhere around 20 string breaks over the course of the last 10 years or so, the capo bar that holds the tension in front of the tuning pins was a bit dinged up on the bottom. It was no longer smooth, which meant on a particularly strong strike, a string could shift into or out of a small groove, which could cause such a large change in tension so quickly that it would snap the string... especially old strings. Once the uppermost 3 octaves were removed, the capo bar was sanded smooth and then the new string put on.
      Lastly, the hammers were also original and 23 years old... the upper ones had next to no felt left on them and I couldn't continue having them voiced down. SOOO, all new hammers, and shanks and flanges, have also been put on!
      I've found out that all of that work is very typical for a 23 year old piano and it's a bit astounding that it didn't have to be done sooner. I should probably plan for all fresh string in the upper register every 5 years to keep it the most supple (concert pianos get new string up there every year, and fully restrung every 5 years or so). Next time I get new string, if I still own the piano, it should probably get new string for the entire instrument, not just the top. And hammers have 20-ish years of life in them on average... less if you play a lot, more if you hardly play. Concert pianos get new hammers every 10 years-ish, and they don't get played for hours every day, but they get tip top maintenance!
      It's also not a good idea to change the A 440 center, at least not by more than about 1 Hz in either direction. The whole instrument is designed around the tension put on it when everything is tuned around 440. If that changes, even just to 435, the piano will get all sorts of false beats and other problems because the tension isn't holding the soundboard and therefore the bridge in the optimized shape. My tech recently had to work on an instrument who's owner tuned it down to around 435 or 432... he not only had to bring it back to pitch, but because it had "settled" low, there was about a week of work fixing other issues too! Pianos are interesting!

    • @HS-wp5vb
      @HS-wp5vb 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@CharlesSzczepanek Oh dear, the way you describe it makes it sound technical, but I sort of read all the pain and exasperation that process brough about in between the lines. I can imagine that after 23 years of intensive playing, there are extensive repairs and replacements necessary. It does sound like a rather hefty investment, too. Did you stick with the original Kawai hammers or did you opt for something else, like Abel?
      My neighbours are lucky I generally come home from work so late most of the time I can only play at the weekend, which is sort of sad. But then again I'm not a professional pianist and just play for my personal entertainment.

    • @CharlesSzczepanek

      @@HS-wp5vb I had three hammer choices I was considering: Abel Naturals, Ronsen Weickart, and Renner Blue Points. I ended up choosing the Blue Points based on recommendation from a tech I really trust. They are great! They only have needed a little voicing out of the box, when the Abels and the Ronsens probably would have needed a lot of juice to bring them up.

    • @CharlesSzczepanek
      @CharlesSzczepanek  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks so much for checking this one out, Ser Woolsley! And you have a great question...
      I'd usually prefer to record on my acoustic if possible. The week I needed to get this one filmed, I had 2 broken strings on my acoustic grand and the top register tuning was all sorts of bad... even though it was just 2 weeks after my tech's last visit, when I filmed Clair de lune. Btw, I broke both of those strings in one day doing a little practice of Chopin's Op. 10 No. 1 lol.
      I'm starting the whole process of getting new hammers, shanks, flanges, and knuckles, as well as sanding down the upper register capo bar and restringing the top 3 octaves, on April 13. I'm having Renner Blue Point hammers installed, which are the same series of hammer used by Hamburg Steinway, Bosendorfer, Fazioli and other great brands. The combination of all of that work should lead to a warmer and rounder tone overall, and much more stable tuning in the future. Hopefully that will also mean most all of my recording will be done on the acoustic at that point!
      Sometime in the next few years I really hope to upgrade to a completely new instrument, something like a Steinway B, a Yamaha S7, a Mason & Hamlin BB... but until that point, I'm going to try to make my Kawai the best I possibly can!

    Quelques fois des partitions ne sont absolument pas faites pour être jouées par un autre instrument en voici la preuve
