    Your explanation of value really changed the way I look at charging people. As a side effect though it also further justifies the inequality in the value the client receives. It completely makes sense that a business is receiving a high value since they use it to represent their company and that is one of the things that helps them make money.
    When it comes to the people who can't afford your service you can't look at all of them as a business, some of them are individuals with no income who are trying to get started in the first place. The "value" they are receiving is something that may be seen by enough people to count on your fingers, most which will probably not be clients, and that generates hardly any more income for them.

    This is a great and much needed video! It's hell that we can't, as a society, just recognize the value in design and art without having to explain it every time.
    Edit: Also as a retail worker I agree with so much of this. When you freelance you're the business. You have the prerogative to refuse a sale to someone not willing to pay your prices. If a store said yes to everyone who wanted a discount they'd be out of business.

    One of the reasons why I fear charging clients a “high” price is the competition that can somehow offer extremely lower prices.

    Also this makes me feel a lot better about that one time I refused to do a freelance job because they basically wanted someone to work for free. Hey Will. When you're pricing a logo project, do you base it around an hourly rate? Do you offer multiple pricing options to the client, or just one price? Do you charge more for a larger company than a small one, despite expected difficulty? Just wanted to get your thoughts on these things. Thanks.

    Yeah, that's a very big question that pops in most of the budding designer's mind. And what makes it more confusing is people around start counting years after college and ever now and then pokes with this suggestion "Y U are NOT DOING FREELANCING"? WHY? WHY? WHY?
    But trust me I fail terribly to make them understand that freelancing is not a kid's job. I need lots of self-control as well as precision. One has to be mentally prepared for it, just an experience of two or something year will do better than living me into the level of regrets for that decision of mine. As my DAD says, and I belive that things happen when they have to happen and its best executed when we are fully prepared for it with all the related tools (metaphorically speaking). SO m preparing myself to give my best. next month will be a life changing moment for me as a designer. :)

  • @jaredk.6185
    @jaredk.6185 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Do you just do the logo for a client? Or do you do a bunch of branding as well? What I mean is lets say they are a new company and they come to you with very little in terms of materials. Do you go in making a logo and let them brand around that or do you go in and help them with that branding so that the logo you created is used in a good manner by the client? I ask this because I often find that a client will come in asking for a logo but they do not have any other branding and they are going to build the brand around that, or even worse they come with a brand and ask for a logo but don't tell what the current brand is. I don't know just a question that popped into my mind.

    well,, that video sounds awesome you have done a great job,, my case is very different ! i live in Jordan and I am not afraid of charging my clients, therefore the clients thinks that i am overpriced for charging 250JD (aka 352$) for a logo giving them a free business cards design.. some other designers in Jordan do a "LOGO" design for 50$ (aka 35JD). and i think it would give the clients a heart attack to ask them to pay me "anywhere from 1000 to 10000" !! you may have passed through this phase and can help me out

      @DeathnoteBB 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      geckonia From what I've heard, you probably will alienate clients. That's just what happens when businesses change. On the other hand, you could attract new clients, ones who came in knowing your higher rates and will pay you more.

    • @daedaluxe

      Imo the best way to do it is start at a price point you feel comfortable with, and then when your workload is getting too big to manage then start increasing your prices, this way your time becomes far more valuable and allows you to manage your workload more efficiently.

      DeathnoteBB yeah dude i hear ya. Will is right though. That logo I sold made the band that bought it a lot of cash in tshirt sales. The trick is explaining to the customer exactly what they're getting and if you can give an example of your skills 'working' then the price is easily justified.

    This is easy to say when you already have a name in the desing world, for a new designer it's much harder to convince clients that your work is valuable, and also you can't just pass on a job opportunity when you need to, you know, EAT.

      It does. He's not saying to sell your work for $10000. He's simply saying, know your worth, and charge your worth. Why charge 10 clients $100 for a logo when you can take the time to find 1 client who's willing to pay $1000?
      You're saving time, money, and resources by charging more. You'll have less work, but more money
