Was really excited to find this in my FLGS. My first game was Dr Fright and really enjoyed the boiler room mechanic idea to make the theme pop just that little bit more.

This game is so awesome. I've only played once (Hans + Camp Happy Trails, got obliterated as expected), so seeing how Dr. Fright and the Carnival work was a lot of fun. I really like the Boiler Room mechanic, in part because Dr. Fright is weirdly cute when he pops up in the background. ;)
I'm torn between wanting to see more and not wanting to be spoiled on the other content!

One thing that seems neat about this game (and perhaps even _more_ on brand for slasher movies) is that if everything goes unusually well, it represents you being in a comedic / parody horror movie.
How I imagined the end...

Nancy: "Is he... finally... dea-"
Dr. Fright: (*poof in*) "YES! Yes, I'm dead! You won! You kicked me in the groin and repeatedly whipped me to death! Ugh... women." (*poof out*)

Fun playthrough as always! I completely ignored this while it was crowdfunding but it looks extremely thematic and a good time. I can imagine losing wouldn't feel too bad either as it appears to be a good experience regardless.
That’s the overriding feeling I got. It’s fun to win or lose :)

Nah, not a cheat. Trust me, in this play I would’ve considered cheating the other way to make it more of a challenge. But I use a program to automatically remove silences from the video and my headset’s audio, and that weird cut there was a victim of the program.
Mathematical strategy for the Boiler Room (assuming one in each quadrant):
1) Decide on one pair of directions. (Up-down, left-right) The example below shall simulate a left-right choice.
2) Slide card to the right for simulated example. (in practice, decide on whichever suits you, if you're a southpaw like me sliding to the left feels more intuitive)
2a) If the 1st card reveals Dr. Fright, pay attention to where Dr. Fright shows up. Switch direction choice to up-down. If he shows up at the bottom-right quadrant, slide down (down has a 66% chance of missing whereas up has a 33% chance of missing). If he shows up at the top-right quadrant, slide up instead. (same theory)
2b) If the 1st card is a miss, you may assume that the first card hid Dr. Fright somewhere on the left. Slide to the opposite direction. (left has a 66% chance of missing whereas right has a 33% chance of missing)
3ai) If the 2nd card reveals Dr. Fright, all bottom / top Dr. Frights are revealed & that direction becomes safe, allowing you to take a maximum of 2 damage in the boiler room.
3aii) If the 2nd card does not reveal Dr. Fright, continue sliding in the same direction. Dr. Fright is in a 50-50% state at the moment, the 3rd card will reveal whether you take 2 damage or 1 damage.
3bi) If the 2nd slid card has Dr. Fright, that means all remaining cards on the right has Dr. Fright hidden. Simply swipe left from this point on, you'll take 1 damage in total.
3bii) If the 2nd card is still a dodge, slide in the same direction as step 2. Dr. Fright is in a 50-50% state at the moment, the 3rd card will reveal whether you take 1 damage or no damage at all.
4aii) The 3rd card will pinpoint Dr. Fright's position, you will leave the boiler room either with 1 damage taken or 2 damage taken. Be careful not to slide wrongly.

Idk bout those dice rolls lol I'm seeing some jump cuts in a few spots man haha..I just late pledged this game with the Dr.Fright and Into the Abyss(Alien) movies and it comes with a zombie "vignette" and some other cool kickstarter extras. It's gonna be awhile before I get the game which is why/how I found you but I'm psyched for this to get to me.
I sometimes call a “solo do-over” when I’m playing games, but this particular play was as insane as it looked ;)

Have you tried Too Many Bones? I'm backing their last expansion. It's one of my favorite newer games and is one of those that's great for a group or solo experience but you have to really like rolling dice haha. I personally love the luck and tactility of chucking dice but know it's not for everyone

@@OneStopCoopShop Nice! I'll check those vids out. Yea TMB is in my top 10 too. I think it's one of the best in the past few years. I love the puzzle mechanic of each gearloc which is so varied and ranged from easier to use to some being very nuanced. It's also a great solo game. Also, I didn't realize how important a games feel/tactility is for me until playing this a few times but wow man the character sheets, components and use of dice mechanics with trove loot and leveling is super fun
is it possible to combine cards from different films or can u only change or mix up the killers, final girls and locations as u want?
you can do whatever you want, of course, but by the rules as written you are supposed to use the cards from your location and your killer, and not to mix and match in cards from other sets. And it often wouldn't work to break that rule, because cards might refer to mechanics that don't exist for your killer or location, for example.
Which would you rank higher? Warp's edge or Final girl? Just SUPER curious. :) Both seems like Great SOLO games
Geez……. Maybe warp’s edge? Final girl clearly ranks higher for theme and cinematic moments, but I LOVE bag builders and how quickly you level in WE
This game being solo is its biggest weakness. This is like one of those "movie" style games, sort of like Dawn of the Zeds or Darkest Night. These games can be played solo, but I enjoy them more with a group. It seems too random for solo play for me.
This won’t work for everyone, but I play this game 2 player too. We take turns “running” the final girl. We discuss options, but the “leader” for the turn makes the final decisions. I’ve been doing this with many solo-only games recently.
I want to ask about the second turn, does the killer move and kill first (basic killer phase) or the terror go first (move to asleep mode)?
The killer will resolve the icon(s) next to the “K” icon on the left first (for dr. Fright this is a basic knife/attack icon, no movement) THEN the terror card’s effects. Maybe I messed that up on turn 2?
Just wondering how different this is (mechanically) from hostage negotiator? It looks like shares many details. If you have negotiator, is this just more of the same?
I’d watch my review video for a fuller discussion of the game, but basically:
- the core card and dice mechanic is the same, though the dice are more forgiving in final girl
- the addition of movement on the board makes the game feel drastically more exciting and tactical, at least for me, compared to HN’s abstracted take on things
- I find Final Girl more dynamic in play, and all cards seem useful every game, whereas in HN I often ignored some completely
I'm having trouble playing the game. I could sprint and bring victims to the exit. However I still have movement left over. Can I continuously move with my remaining movement or do I have to halt? Tried looking everywhere for it. The same for collecting victims (can I continuously move and bring victims as I move through spaces)? Or extra movement to move again (from sprint, etc) while I'm searching? The same type of rules. I tried the rule book. Not sure.
Picking up and dropping off victims does not end your movement. So you can sprint, use the first move to bring some victims to an exit, then keep moving. That’s all part of the same movement action.
However, you cannot start a new action while still “saving” movement. So for example, I couldn’t sprint 1 space, play a search card, then sprint another space. I have to finish resolving the sprint card before I resolve the search card.

I just played dr. Fright for the first time last night and had the same event card and read it as I had to deal with 2 asleep cards in the killer phase is that correct or is it only ever 1 card?

And im not sure the time in the video but one the first few terror cards where he puts you to sleep and have an option to reshuffle but if you don’t you have to deal with an extra card.
Guard is a reaction card (blue border) and is played after you’re attacked. Rulebook page 21.

I use a program to automatically edit out quiet moments in my recordings, keeping only the parts where I am narrating/explaining. Can create odd edits from time to time, but saves me hours of extra work!

32:08 I thought that if your action phase immediately ends it puts you at the red x and you can't buy any items that aren't 0 cost. Correct me if I'm wrong
What would lead you to that conclusion? The rules for the red X on page 17 don’t mention it, and later on that same page it says “once the action phase ends, whether by choice or not, you enter the planning phase”. It seems pretty clear that the action phase being forced to end does not in any way skip or invalidate the planning phase.
@@OneStopCoopShop the red x symbol for ending action phase is the same as what is below zero. I assumed it went there if your action phase ended.

For sure, randomness is a huge part of the game. If you don't like some luck in your games, I'd stay away.
Must be a easy game seeing so many TH-camrs reviewer's seem to be winning all the time when they play it. Saying they been beaten by it but every game they play through they always win.... Makes the game pointless if it's that easy lol.

I think my win rate is 60-70% personally, though it depends on the modular combination.
But I have a great time with the play regardless. I know some solo players need to lose a game often to have a good time, but that’s not me :)
I thought items stayed hidden unless you search. I have to look at the rules.
Set-up indicates you flip the top card of each item deck. However, after those items are taken, future items will be hidden on top of the deck until searched.
Forgot to take initial damage from dr fright at 23:55
I didn’t show it on camera at that moment, but I believe I took 2 life that turn (one from his initial attack, one from getting caught in the dream)

Well, at least for move it’s pretty balanced across results. On two successes you move further, and on a failure you take some damage as you move, but in any case you move. But yes, this will be too much dice rolling for many players ;)

Only thing actually holding me back is the amount of luck in this game, for sure there is some bad dice role mitigation, but if You constantly role bad one roll after the other, I guess You are screwed 😅

@matissmatiss3126 Victorum is solo only. Dice luck is pretty important in all the Hoplo games, though I’d say it’s a bit less than final girl. Remastered has 1-2 player solo/coop, but that’s the weakest way to play the game in my opinion. We have videos and reviews of all of these if you want to check them out
