  • We help a fellow cruiser (Emily) from DinghyDreams raise her mast. We raised her deck stepped mast without the use of a crane., instead using another boat and several control lines.
    Those involved in this adventure:
    Emily
    Johnny
    Tony
    Tom
    Maddie (behind the camera)
    Herby
    Then we venture into the Green Market at West Palm Beach and enjoy some local music.

    Thanks for helping out Emily , she is a good friend of 'the accidental sailor girl' Cortney. I like the use of a buddy boat to raise the mast. Way easier than rigging up shear legs or similar! Cheers warren

    Let's hear it for the one-armed sailor! Now that is what I call a real enthusiast. You were so nice to help step his mast and how clever you were in doing so.

    a lot of farmer's markets are that way- they are venues for eco-posers and cost far more than even a regular grocery store.

    That was educational but crazy. Yes, protective footwear can be hard on deck, but losing toes or worse can be harder on a sailor.

    Good seeing you get the mast stepped. That looked like work for sure. Nice farmers market with lots of good things to eat. YUM. Always lots to do on a boat and it seems like you never get caught up. Hope you have a good trip across the Gulf Stream.

      That anchorage was my favorite place to anchor. A short dinghy ride got you to anything you could want and all the food you could need!

    I soloed my Pearson Ariel to from Morro Bay to Mexico and back. Great little boat, and tough too. Hit a whale, hit 50 knots and was pooped, survived a 90 degree knock down. She got me there and back. Only thing I wish I had was more standing headroom! Good luck with the journey!

    No crane at my marina except for launch and haul, so a lot of masts go up and down with a gin pole, very similar. If you tie a loop just under the spreaders, INSIDE the shrouds/stays using a halyard and a line tied lower as guide ropes, you don't have to climb the mast to retrieve your lift line.

    Wow, what courage to set Emily's (Emilie's?) mast (sorry, wind noise garbled her mention of her boat's name) using only one companion sailboat. What a crew! Wish everyone had been introduced and documented in the comments, though I suppose the sailing community knows all the able, clever, and helpful folks.

    West palm is very expensive. Miami is putting in a Publix with a dock for shopping before heading into the Gulf Stream.

    A friend bought a boat on-the-hard with the proviso that it be fully-rigged, floating and ready to sail at delivery. The yard dropped and pretzeled the alum mast while rigging the boat. The sale obviously was cancelled, but the owner's insurance and the yard's insurance eventually scrapped the boat since they couldn't find another mast, and manufacturing a new mast and all the rigging wasn't justified by the resale-value of a 40-yo sailboat.
    Masts and rigging can be even more expensive as new marine diesels...

    Y'all are just the right amount of nuts. How do you measure rig tension?

    • @RiggingDoctor
      @RiggingDoctor  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I do it by feel. Loos gauge is a good start but not very useful when it comes to tuning the rigging.
      The feel comes with practice.

    I recently bought a 18 ft sailboat and cannot raise the mast, it is too heavy and unwieldy for one person, even with my neighbor helping it is too much. Need special instructions please.

    • @RiggingDoctor
      @RiggingDoctor  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If it’s too heavy to handle, you might need the service of a crane. Being an 18 footer, you might be able to get away with using a tall tree with a strong branch as a lifting apparatus to get the spar in the air so you can place it onto the step.

    cool project- your original setup would have worked fine , I think, if you had let the front boat come back towards the rear boat as you raised the mast. . I can really identify with a lot of the stuff you encounter and do. Thanks !

    A Gin pole would be a little easier.

    • @RiggingDoctor

      We tried that method first but the mast was a little heavy and we were worried about dropping it into the water!

    I thought you distinctly said “without a crane”, the other boat is a crane, is it not?? Click bait.

    • @RiggingDoctor
      @RiggingDoctor  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The other boat is as much a crane as every winch on your boat is a “winch” (they are actually all capstands).
      Being how “crane” tends to mean a hired piece of equipment that is either mounted to the shore line or drives over to you on wheels or tracks, I would say that this was doing it without a crane (you just need a friend with a sailboat).

    • @RiggingDoctor
      @RiggingDoctor  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      We did attempt the “gin pole” method, but without a tabernacle, it was going to end badly. If you don’t have a tabernacle, I would suggest using an external hoisting method of your choice, similar to what we did here. If you do have a tabernacle, all you need to do is the gin pole method we attempted to do in the beginning of the video.

    • @derekdrever3470
      @derekdrever3470 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RiggingDoctor Without a tabernacle, a gin pole can be a serious hazard. I’ve seen broken bones from accidents. Great job using what you have available.
