You are correct. Her last letter said she'd be coming home but she never made it back she was on the list of the army dead. The end was all flashbacks. It really hits the heart.

Well she did come home but it was in a casket...so sad, but what harmonies

No, she died. The rest of the song was a flashback to their one special night together. Her second-to-last letter said she wouldn't be able to write for awhile, alluding to going into a dangerous situation. Her last letter said she'd be home soon and was sent before her death. Her last flight wasn't in the passenger compartment. It's a powerfully emotional song. The original song was about a male soldier and the female waitress he met before deploying whom he sent letters home to, and Home Free flipped the genders for their version. I love their cover.

I''ve put off watching this one because it tears me up every time. Did it again. Great reaction, this song is so beautiful! Always want to hear more Home Free :)

She did die. She was writing she’d be home soon but she died before she made it home. It was written in the 90’s I think with a Vietnam soldier and then made popular by the Dixie Chicks now known as the Chicks. Home Free changed the soldier to a woman and put her in the Middle East which I liked. They are so good and so versatile. Want to hear Pop listen to Meant to Be or Country Fried Pop Medley; R & B, try Blue Ain’t Your Color, End of the Road; Gospel, How Great Thou Art, O Holy Night; Country, Country Roads, Hillbilly Bone; Christmas, Angels We Have Heard on High, Do You Hear What I Hear. So many genres and every one is good! Good reaction BD Heath

Yes the soldier was coming home but it's not always the way we want the soldier come home.

This was covered by the Chicks but was written and originally performed by Bruce Robison.

Yes she died, but she sent that letter before she was killed. So he got that last letter, after he knew she was already gone. The harmonies here are so GOOD. The song was written in the 1990s but the biggest hit anyone had with it, was the Dixie Chick's in the 2003/2004 time but of course it was written as a male soldier dying but Home Free reversed it

The telling lyrics -- during the first part of the song they sing, “You’ll never WANT TO hold the hand of another guy.” In the last part they sing, “You’re never GONNA hold the hand of another guy.” This one gets me every time!

Never want to be alone when THE letter says a soldier's coming home. Not her letter...

they changed two things from the original:
    - the original had the guy as the soldier and the girl back home
    - the original was about the vietnam war, here she was drafted in the middle east
also fun fact: the actors are actual army vets!

My dad knew a family who's son lost his life in Vietnam on the day he was discharged from the army and, it was also Christmas day. He was a civilian just waiting for the chopper to take him away when the base was hit by the enemy. Things like that happen and its really sad, the almost's in life are the things that really get to us.

Others have already addressed that the soldier died, but notice the lyrics change on the last chorus from "You'll never want to hold the hand of another guy," to "You're never gonna hold the hand of another guy." Keep up the good work, BD!

Love this song.. I too was hopeful that she hadnt died and was headed home, but alas.. she did die. Home Free can do absolutely anything. If you get a chance.. see them live the experience is just jaw dropping. Please react to more Home Free.. I just love your reactions! Have you see Austin' Brownns "SIgned Sealed Delivered"? .. He sings that with friends.. among them is Jenika, Tim the super bass's wife... So much fun as are really any of their songs.

The original was by the (Dixie) Chicks - Home Free reversed the sexes of the soldier and wait person from the original. Back in the day, people were notified by telegram that a loved one had died in the war (apart from rare exceptions, the deceased was buried where they died, whether that was Italy, Germany, etc.). Now they receive a letter advising of the death and when the deceased will be 'coming home'. Her last letter is so sad since she believed she'd be coming home on leave . . . Thanks for playing it & your comments.

She had mailed her letter before she was killed. I guess that is what she meant when she said that it was getting rough over here.

Reactors often get caught up in the technical details and can miss the
lyrics which are pretty important in alot of the storytelling genres of folk, country or Americana music as they call it now.
When you get to Avi Kaplan's solo music his voice always carries emotion very well and it can vary widely from one song to the next.
"Change On the Rise" is the starting point for that.

I'll put in again for Love Me Like That to get reacted to. Another emotionally powerful song by Home Free. Definitely worth watching completely unspoiled, I hope noone else has spoiled anything about it for you yet.

Sometimes there needs to be a balance in listening harmony and what Homefree does best and listening to the lyrics. This one was a miss. Such a great song with a touching story. I think you should give it another listen. It was a little hard when they were singing about her death and you were jamming to air drums. I think you do a great job but missed this one. 🥺.
