Hi everyone. Jimmie is my Dad and I thought I'd shed some light on why he plays guitar the way he does. :) 1: He mostly taught himself. Grandma Rodgers taught him piano when he was young and he used that knowledge to figure out a style that worked for him. 2: What most people don't know about him is that his hands are like clubs! He loves gardening and landscaping. That and a baseball injury when he was a kid meant he had to come up with a simplistic way to play guitar. He briefly trained marti
I've loved this song for so many decades..............first remember my father listening to it, whenI was a child...........it resonates so well with my own feelings on what is wished for to live a happy life
"Secretly", "Honeycomb", "Oh Oh I'm Falling In Love Again". All good songs by him. I remember when they came out and know almost all the words, still :)I think Rock n Roll of the 50s was the best, then 70s and downhill after that unless it was Motown :)
This reminds me so much of my teenage years. My dad, rest his soul bought this when it first came out, and raved about it. We miss you dad, always remember you when I hear this song. Thanks so much for posting.
This is my favorite of Jimmie Rodgers' songs! In the mid '70's, I had a a 1950's party. I had put out hints of song titles all over the house, and had people guess their names. Of course, I had this one. A bottle of wine with candy kisses placed all around it. Believe it or not, but no one guess it! I couldn't believe it. What got me looking him up today, because it has been a while since I even thought about him (sorry) was there was a movie on cable tv.
Jimmie Rodgers is the father of folk-rock, a singer-songwriting genius who invented folk-rock back in 1954 while working in Nashville's Club Unique where he packed 'em in nightly singing uptempo electric guitar numbers with a heavy backbeat long before Bob Dylan or The Byrds ever picked up a guitar. This guy is the most underrated figure in history of modern music & deserves a MAJOR revival for massive new recognition & respect. PUT HIM IN THE ROCK 'N ROLL HALL OF FAME! PLEASE!
On this day in 1958 {February 20th} the debut show of the six-date, 12 show 'Big Gold Stars' tour opened in Orlando, Florida... One of the acts* on the bill was Jimmie Rodgers; and at the time he had two records on Billboard's Top 100 chart, "Oh-Oh, I'm Falling in Love Again" at #25 and "Kisses Sweeter Than Wine" at #63... * Other acts were Jerry Lee Lewis, the Everly Brothers, Buddy Holly & the Crickets, and Bill Haley & the Comets...
I wonder if he used two identical guitars in concert-one tuned to minor and the other to major. It also explains how he was able to change keys so easily.
@@pithovat4457 His Son posted a tuning he used. Very slack. EG#BEG#B. I have not run into this tuning before. They say he was self-taught, so maybe he made it up.
Be proud of your Dad...he came from a time that unfortunately will never be repeated, I was born in 1970 and to this day wish I was born sooner..it will never be the same
Jimmie F. Rodgers passed away on January 18th, 2021 in Palm Desert, California at the age of 87... Between 1957 and 1967 the Camas, Washington native had twenty-five records on Billboard's Top 100 chart, four made the Top 10 with one reaching #1, "Honeycomb", for two weeks in September of 1957... Besides "Honeycomb", his other three Top 10 records were "Kisses Sweeter Than Wine" at #7 in December of 1957, "Oh-Oh, I'm Falling In Love Again" at #7 in February of 1958, and "Secretly" at #3 in June of 1958... He just missed having a fifth Top 10 record when his "Bimbombey" peaked at #11 in December of 1958... May he R.I.P.
Your dad gave my family a heck of a lot of enjoyment over the years. My parents married young in the early 1960s. They didn't have a lot of 45's, but these were among them & I remember these songs being played even through the mid 1970s when the record was all scratched up. My dad would dance my mother between the kitchen & the living room & would twirl her around & even bend her over backwards while we kids were laughing our guts out. Hug & thank your Dad for me. He made my life richer.
My father loves jimmie rodgers so much that he tune our guitar the way jimmie tune his, and friom there he can sing and play almost every jimmie rodgers song,...godbless
Ricky Nelson also tuned his guitar, and it was used primarily as a prop on stage in his early career. Remember when Jimmie Rodgers appeared on Sha-na-na in the early eighties, and he could not hit the high notes any longer. Still great fun to see him again.
Anton, Thank you so much for uploading these videos. It's so much fun to see and hear Jimmie Rodgers again -- especially singing Kisses Sweeter than Wine. Gosh, I had been out of high school for three years. Guess that makes me an Old Broad, for sure !!!
I just ran across this. Than you for posting it. What a treasure.I was a young kid, and loved every song. I still love him. God Bless. An enormous talent, that touched everyone in this country.
Besides that I have always loved these songs. I used to sing them with my mother when I was little. Great memories. Besides, this guy is adorable to watch...
Thank you for sharing the reason. A wonderfully talented man with a unique voice and style. We are blessed by his music. Child of Clay is so very meaningful it breaks your heart.
Jimmie Rodgers died in 1933 of tuberculosis... He couldn't be alive today anyway, since he was born in 1897. But his music is still very alive, and hopefully it will remain this way!
A signature feature in both songs is a modulation so that he raises the whole song a half tone after the 2cd or 3rd chorus. His guitar style allows him to modulate very efficiantly--just move the thumb up one fret. It is a very simplistic and unsophisticated guitar style but it works really well for his style. The rhythm is a key to both of these super hit songs--and they were super hits in their time. They really should do a bio movie of his life and hi "accident."
Sanjuroxxx, ilove your Dads MusicI am 62 and have followed Jimmy for years.Who knows what may have been,if he had not gotten pulled over on the road and beaten up so bad.Take Care,GOD BLESS!!
É uma pena o mundo não ter conhecido o trabalho deste cantor fabuloso!!!! Nasci em 1960, mas por acaso ganhei um LP do Jimmie Rodgers e nunca parei de ouví-lo!!! CONGRATULATIONS JIMMIE, AS FOR ME YOU ARE BETWEEN THE BEST!!!!!
Wow, true? Jimmie Rodgers is your Dad? I love this. His Kisses Sweeter Than Wine was the first 45 record at our house. We danced to it about a million times on a tiny square portable turntable. Honeycomb is on the other side. Five kids in our family and we loved, loved, loved dancing to it. I am happy to know Jimmie is still alive and I enjoy reading your contribution. Much love to you father.
I was sitting at my desk in the first grade of school, when a cute girl walked up to me, stared at me, bent down and kissed me on my lips! Needless to say I was 2 shades of red. Her name was Tina and for days I went around singing Tina's kisses were sweeter than wine, recalling this song..
@dbeatlefreak He did actually have to re-learn the guitar after his famous "accident" in 1967 when he had part of his skull crushed. Interestingly, the version of this song on Jimmie's 1st lp on Roulette "Jimmie Rodgers" features an alternate version with added drums.
Sorry, I just mispelled Jimmy's name. Still can't believe two people didn't like this. Jimmy has a Christmas Album on Itunes. Some really nice stuff; including O Holy Night. I just love the clarity and tonality of his voice. Thanks for posting.
@mollymitch1 hmmm.. not sure quite what you are askin' here... Country Rock, to me, is a product of the mid-to-late 60's, created by musicians like Poco, the Eagles, Flying Burritos, etc- groups that had both Country AND rock in their backgrounds. Jimmy R. to me, was always pretty much a pop singer, at least on most of his singles. Nonetheless, A GREAT Pop singer to be sure !!
He was such a great man I miss him so much! He passed Monday morning 18th of January... My uncle was a great man😪💚

Mr. Rodgers very alive. Age 79 and deserves every bit of it. Taught me the birds and bees with his tune. Thanks!
Heard 'Kisses sweeter than Wine' on Liza Tarbuck. Very haunting melody, and pure class. Never to be repeated.
Fantastic love these songs from jimmie
A great singer with a great voice. He made some quality songs.
This song, Kisses Sweeter Than Wine reminds me of my mom and dad who had 10 children. My mom and dad are missed. Thank you for posting.

+sauquoit13456 Sauquoit: Thanks for the information. That was back in the day and I do remember them all -- it was so much fun then !!
A real bird and the bees song. Learned it as a child from Rodger's recording. "Oops, Oh Lordy, I was the father of twins.....". Loved singing along.
Te amo Jimmie Rodgers...te pareces a un gran amor que tuve hace muchos años atras..Lindo,hermoso...
I rmbr hearing his music when I was a kid. Now many years later my son has gotten to like it too. When listening to music he will request it.
A great old song. And he does this very nicely !!
Learned to dance with this tune on our little 45 record player....the basement, the 50's, Ohio and big can-can petticoats on.
Great performance. Interesting how he's got that guitar tuned that he's barring it with his thumb.
+39thala Open tuning,minor,than major,like for dobro guitars.
+Tonton Grenade Thanks. Yes, I hear the minor chords on Kisses...At 1:53 for Honeycomb, it seems he has it tuned in major.
Jimmie was great talent.
So romantic ❤️

He was the main star in an old movie called "The Shepherd of the Hills." Well worth watching! It's free to watch on TH-cam.
I think you mean "The Little Shepherd of Kingdom Come."
You're correct! Sorry! Thanks! :)
"The Shepherd of the Hills" is a great old John Wayne movie and is also on TH-cam. At least I guess it still is. I saw it a couple of years ago.
look above you
nobodys saying
i grew uo listening to his music. His voice is just so great1

Thank you for sharing the reason. A wonderfully talented man with a unique voice and style. We are blessed by his music. Child of Clay is so very meaningful it breaks your heart.
Anyone else notice Robert Plant applying the intro vocal from Kisses sweeter than Wine into middle if Zeppelin's How Many More Times. ??
+ziad bassaj im here doing that research. just now. im 53 been listening to zeppelin since i was 16.
+jackc396 i been a huge Zep fan myself, Im 47 So yeah. I think good ol' Plant probly listened to that song then improvised it on How Many More Times.
listen to Jimmie Rodgers for 20 seconds and its clear he's just brilliant....

I have to say, the backup singers give this song a deeply eery and disconcerting feel.

I cannot believe there are two people on the planet who do not like Juiiy singing this.
One of my favourite "voices" of all times.
