I'm 17 years old. And I can't even listen to this song without crying. When my mom and dad got divorced when I was 8, my dad used to blast this song in the house and sing it so loud. It still to this day makes me so emotional to even listen to it. It makes me so nostalgic.
Heard him joke of one of those PBS specials, I think it was, that at his age, some of those notes were coming out of his butt, or some such thing as that.
Now wait a minute dude, I have been tone deaf all my life. This means when I try to sing and I feel like I'm doing great, in reality I'm suffering from what's called a tin ear. But believe this even though I can't sing I can damn sure hear with the best of em.
Always loved this song, but never saw the group. Boy, it was really nice to see such handsome young men with no piercing, tattoos on every part of their body, no long messy hair, torn jeans, fireworks that are not necessary if you have a good song & a voice that could melt your heart.
No flames shooting to the ceiling and catching the room on fire, no blue hair. I'm a guy, and while it may not melt my heart, I know a little girl that it will melt hers, and in less than a year, she and I will dance to this. She says we have different tastes in music. Let's see whose taste changes after we dance to this. You can understand every word, and it makes sense ! Plus just to add to it, This guy was professionally trained as an opera singer.
+lenspaulding Wow. Clueless (meaning you). Jay and the Americans were wonderful, and the 60s was a time with amazing diversity in music. On the radio, you'd hear Motown followed by British Invasion followed by cross-over country or folk or ...
This kind of music never dies & I really don't know what one calls this so called music today & the way these people dress is something else!!! Jay Black wi) always be missed & never forgotten!!!
I just thought I would add, that I am always impressed with how graceful the silhouette dancers in the video are. I really don't know how many times I have watched this video, but it is quite a number.
My tears are streaming down my face as I listen to him sing! His voice was incredible and filled with such emotion! I was only 11 IN 1965 when this song came out and have been listening to it ever since! A true musical genius; may he rest in eternal glory. Jay, you will forever be missed!
For me, when the Beatles hit Ed Sullivan was the day the music died. It's never been the same. Don't get me wrong, the Beatles were good (their hair was better). Mick was fun, at least you could dance to the Stones. Lots of good British stuff from back then. But they killed off pop songs like Cara Mea. Land of a Thousand Dances. Town Without Pity. Yakkety Yak. Crying. Over the Mountain. Even Hound Dog. The Beatles were the Greatest, but so were The Drifters. Even the Supremes. That stuff evaporated and was laid to rest when Sugar Hill Gang came along. That was surely the end of black men who could sing.
One thing can't be denied about music at this time, it was eclectic. It ranged from Chuck Berry singing Maybelline, to Duane Eddy doing a guitar instrumental "Rebel Rouser" to Jay and the Americans doing this, the Penguins singing, "I Only Have Eyes For you" to Japanese Kyu Sakamoto singing "Sukiyaki" in Japanese! to Elvis singing Hound Dog or Little Richard, "Tutti Fruity." to Marty Robbins, "El Paso" or silly things like, "Purple People Eater" or "Runnin' in the Jungle" and the ultra-soppy "Teen Angel" Slow songs, fast songs, Cha-cha tunes, even a waltz or two. The music scene was wide open. If you could come up with something a little different, even off key, you had a chance to get it on the air. Fun times.
Jack Sprat Jack we were so blessed, and spoiled to have our music. Every generation is different of course, but there is no comparision to what passes for popular music on the radio today, than what we got to listen to every day for two decades. the other thing is the media itself. We all had the same radios. AM and then FM and the same music no matter if you were in Sitka Alaska, or Key West Florida. This generationally shared music will never happen again. Whatever the music quality, people are now too fragmented with their own choices to take a kid from Nome and a kid from Key West and have them know each others songs lol
impactite yes but who could possibly know that we would be listening to the same crap for 40 plus years.....over and over and over again until we got sick of it!!

Jay Black (born David Blatt; November 2, 1938 - October 22, 2021) was an American singer, also known as "The Voice," whose height of fame came in the 1960s when he was the lead singer of the band Jay and the Americans. The band had numerous hits including "Cara Mia," "Come a Little Bit Closer," and "This Magic Moment." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jay_Black

He is definitely amazing more people my age (14) should appreciate this type of music such as Frank Sinatra and Jay and the Americans. Now everyone listens to the terrible trap music
I would add that I'd prefer a longer and more developed set of lyrics. Too many good songs were short of their potential because of repetitious lyrics. 'Stella by Starlight' is another example. 'Marie' by Irving Berlin is still another.
I wish I could roll back the clock and take all the sadness away , but I have a feeling that if I did , all the joy would be gone as well ! 😂 Take Care my Friend
Fond memory...I was in a friend's car who was driving us to a NYC beach. He would punch the radio station buttons continually looking for a station that was playing this song. After finding it, listening to it, he would start punching the buttons again and again to hear another station play it. Same routine when we returned from the beach. We must have heard Cara Mia at least 10 times or more. Great listening to a beautiful voice!

Jay, Gene Pitney, Roy Orbison, and Johnny Maestro are the four "GREATEST " male voices of the Doo Woo era. I can listen to their music all day long , over and over. It's impossible for me to decide who is number # 1. I'm so glad I grew up in that time frame and today their songs generate GREAT MEMORIES.
Jay Black (born, David Blatt) became known as "The Voice," and with just reason. His range and power were (and at last listen, still is) something to behold with wonder. The cat "has the pipe" as they used to say, and it is a pleasure to hear him sing these classic '60s songs.
I remember watching Jay and the Americans with my Mom and Dad about 25 years ago on PBS. My Daddy Loved this song and remember him sing along with it. My parents are now in heaven. I would give anything to go back to that time with them. Watching this video helps me to do so. 😢
Not true man all you gotta do is look in the right places rather than be pessimistic and look at the shittier side I really encourage you to discover and find talent everywhere
during a time when EVERYONE spoke and sang in impeccable English, singing songs that touched the heart but were intellectually sound, understandable, moving and eternal. nothing today compares.
@@maryann1531 the sad thing I have seen is ever since we have been mandated to love each other somehow or another resentment, anger and revenge got a foothold, language changed, feelings towards each other changed, the Mills Brothers, Ella Fitzgerald, Johnny Mathis, Nat King Cole, The Platters and on and on and on, same with Sinatra, Como, etc. their diction impeccable, simple stories simply sung with intelligence and emotion, all went by the board when somehow or another the mandate to love in the 60s led to people allowing their worst side to show as in 'you better like the way I talk, walk etc. etc. or else. so, the music world reflects this. screaming instead of singing, ranting and raving instead of telling a story, noise replacing intellectual silence. thanks to You Tube we can get a taste of intelligent singing.
And, why is that? Are you going to elaborate on your comment, or are you going to just leave it at that, so that those of us who read it might think that the real jerk could be someone else?

RIP Jay Black His voice is beyond words and everyone knew it.
What a singer!I was fortunate enough to see him in person at UNC in 65 or,66.So sorry that he is no longer with us.
Quite possibly the best vocal performance of the rock era. RIP Jay Black. Your legacy is your voice indeed the music you leave behind. Thanks for sharing your gift with the world.
OH YES
Listen to Roy Orbison. Roy also wrote or co-wrote a lot of his hits. Black WAS excellent, however.
I'm 17 years old. And I can't even listen to this song without crying. When my mom and dad got divorced when I was 8, my dad used to blast this song in the house and sing it so loud. It still to this day makes me so emotional to even listen to it. It makes me so nostalgic.
They are awesome harry Hollewood
so sorry
Cheyenne !.....BODY !!.. saludos desde Perù !!..chau amigo !!..
I am crying just reading this. Not only is the marriage destroyed but the children suffer for the rest of their lives...
Cheyenne Hayes ....hugs....heart breaking about divorce
No auto tune , pure voice
hell yea!
How can a perfect voice be auto tuned anyways ?
@@hollywoodjoe123 Auto tune didn't exist back then, is what the comment meant.
When it came to singing live onstage back then you either had it or not - JAY BLACK and The Americans HAD IT ! @@kibblenbits
He was just fantastic, we’ll be hearing this record forever
So true
I can't stop listening to Cara Mia. Only Jay could sing like that! May he rest in eternal glory. Amen.
One of the best 'voices' ever recorded. Jay Black performed a true classic here, in every sense of the word. One of the best recordings ever...
He is one of the greatest singers of all time ‼️ 2023 😊
Love him love this song! He hit the same notes in his sixties on into seventies.pure talent!
Heard him joke of one of those PBS specials, I think it was, that at his age, some of those notes were coming out of his butt, or some such thing as that.
Only those who are tone deaf would vote this down...this is the best vocal performance in the history of rock and roll !!!
Now wait a minute dude, I have been tone deaf all my life. This means when I try to sing and I feel like I'm doing great, in reality I'm suffering from what's called a tin ear. But believe this even though I can't sing I can damn sure hear with the best of em.

It is true, Jay Black has a great vocal gift and will always be one of finest singers of all time.
Yes I agree ,I've never heard a voice like is love it💯🎶
Always loved this song, but never saw the group. Boy, it was really nice to see such handsome young men with no piercing, tattoos on every part of their body, no long messy hair, torn jeans, fireworks that are not necessary if you have a good song & a voice that could melt your heart.
wut
No flames shooting to the ceiling and catching the room on fire, no blue hair. I'm a guy, and while it may not melt my heart, I know a little girl that it will melt hers, and in less than a year, she and I will dance to this. She says we have different tastes in music. Let's see whose taste changes after we dance to this. You can understand every word, and it makes sense ! Plus just to add to it, This guy was professionally trained as an opera singer.
Amen brother, I couldn’t have said it better myself.
Thank you Lord for giving us this wonderful voice of Jay Black!
For music, the sixties had it all. And Jay and the Americans were a part of some great music
Embree Walker II is a jerk off plain and simple....(very poor tastes in Music)
lenspaulding Don't you have homework to do???? Is your Mom going to catch you on the computer again when you should be studying?
+Embree Walker II Even the sixties singers who had "bad" voices (and there weren't that many) were at least unique.
+lenspaulding Wow. Clueless (meaning you). Jay and the Americans were wonderful, and the 60s was a time with amazing diversity in music. On the radio, you'd hear Motown followed by British Invasion followed by cross-over country or folk or ...
+Janet Aldrich ....well I disagree Janet.
No auto tune BS. Just *Pure Talent* .
Absolutely right.
Simply put A gifted talent
Breath control, vibrato, and how many octaves?? Yes, power and range as well. Truly gifted and still is!
He had the most beautiful soulful voice in the world. I won the 45 of Only the Lonely on "Name it an claim it" when I was 11.Still have it.
Jay could hold a note like no else in rock and roll.
This kind of music never dies & I really don't know what one calls this so called music today & the way these people dress is something else!!! Jay Black wi) always be missed & never forgotten!!!
I read of Mr. Black's passing this morning. This is my favorite of his vocals. Such a wonderful talent. Rest in peace, dear Sir.
There will never be another voice like Jay’s
I was seven. I remember.
"Holy crap"! what a voice !
Yes indeed!
And he is cute as well
Wow what a voice love him 💙💕 not like crap you hear these days 😉
So romantic and a lovely voice. Thank you.
Beautiful, beautiful.
Rest easy and sing with the angels, Jay. I wasnt alive during this era, but your voice has touched me since the 1980s❤
The BEST....I graduated in 1965....this was the best of the songs in 1965!!!! Music hasn't been the same after the 60's!!!!!
Born in '64 so I missed the 60's when they came out, but still enjoyed their sounds as I grew up, it was a sound that stuck with you!
Every time I listen to this tune I get teary-eyed and choked up. Beautiful memories I wish I could re-live again.
I feel the exact same way!
Cece Davis me too stay safe
You and me both. We are a close-knit generation.
And some I would wish could forget..
Me too Cece
What a voice. I loved this when it first hit the airwaves & still love it now
Jay had one of the cleanest and full voice control of any singer coming out of the sixties.
I grew up in the 60s listening to his music. That music will never die! I am 68 years old now and still listen and love Jay! He will be sadly missed!
One of my favorite groups growing up in the 60s.
The man has one of the greatest voices in Rock N Roll.
JAY BLACK CAN NEVER BE REPLACED REST IN PEACE MY FRIEND!!!
Whatever the music quality, people are now too fragmented with their own choices to take a kid from Nome and a kid from Key West and have them know each others songs lol
impactite yes but who could possibly know that we would be listening to the same crap for 40 plus years.....over and over and over again until we got sick of it!!
impactite yes of course. I think something evil has overtaken our great Country don't you?
lenspaulding Yeah idiots like you are what is wrong with the USA go troll beiber cyrus and all the other studio enhanced voices of today people like you have piss poor taste in music and life and this music will live forever unlike the crap we hear today apart from Jackie Evanch and singers similar to her

Listening again pondering my life at 72 how beautiful this music is spectacular compared to today's how lucky we were it makes me feel happy inside to know we were in this ERA thanks Jay and the American's for the beautiful music I will play at my funeral
Born in 52 , the 60s the 70s the 80s music was real music!!¡!!!!!!
I'm 75 My Daughter has my Playlist for My Funeral.
I'm 59 years old and have all their albums. I knew he was special when I was a teenager....just like him. Love to see young people appreciating his voice. He was awesome.
He is definitely amazing more people my age (14) should appreciate this type of music such as Frank Sinatra and Jay and the Americans. Now everyone listens to the terrible trap music
This guy could have sang the phone book and I would have bought the LP!No other like him! I also love "Sunday & Me".
He still is awesome, and can still hit every octave of that song.
There’s only one thing wrong with this song-it isn’t long enough! His vocals and range are great. The singer on the left smiles at Jay in admiration.
That's what the "replay" button is for! ;-)
I would add that I'd prefer a longer and more developed set of lyrics. Too many good songs were short of their potential because of repetitious lyrics. 'Stella by Starlight' is another example. 'Marie' by Irving Berlin is still another.
Records back then were cut to 2 minutes.

An Incredible vocalist - I've never stopped loving his music since I saw him on TV as a teenager. RIP
I still cry when I hear his singing that lovely song, what a voice. What a gift from God that voice is.
Truly a unique voice! That voice can only come from God!
Mein Papa hat dieses Lied so geliebt; darum heißt mein erstes Kind Cara was lieb, wert und teuer bedeutet und zwei Jahre nach seinem Tod geboren wurde❤
Thanks Jay, your voice & music are never forgotten by our generation. None other like it,
I went to every performance at Westbury, L.I., New York!
Rest In Peace Jay!
What A Voice!

How GREAT was The Voice, Jay Black!?!! Irreplaceable. 🤗❤️
Jay Black (born, David Blatt) became known as "The Voice," and with just reason. His range and power were (and at last listen, still is) something to behold with wonder. The cat "has the pipe" as they used to say, and it is a pleasure to hear him sing these classic '60s songs.
Will Ruha ...He could have sung opera and 🎭 broadway!
When he first sang these songs, they weren't classics yet. :-)
The stars aligned on this one. Pure perfection. RIP Jay.
I just listened to this song 6x straight. ALWAYS loved it and always loved Jay's voice. Jay you will be missed but not, NOT forgotten.
Listening to his voice in this song, the range and clarity, gives me goosebumps, just like when I was 16.

I love these oldies by Jay and the Americans. Yesterday's music was the best. Talented singers like Jay without the need for electronic enhancement.
this guy could SING!!!
+Jan Trieger That's why they called him "The Voice," which is also Steve Perry's (Journey) nickname.
+Jan Trieger Still does.
+Jan Trieger my he could ,we brits missed out
+Jan Trieger And for real. No lip syncing. No auto tune. If memory serves, Jay had a choice to study opera or do more popular tunes.
And there's crossover, too: Some Enchanted Evening was written for Ezio Pinza, an opera star. So of course Jay and the Americans covered it.
Love Jay Black - Cara Mia is a classic. In there with Gene Pitney, Roy Orbison. Phenomenal range/voices, all .🎶🎶🎶🎵🎼🎵🎼🎼🎼

I remember watching Jay and the Americans with my Mom and Dad about 25 years ago on PBS. My Daddy Loved this song and remember him sing along with it. My parents are now in heaven. I would give anything to go back to that time with them. Watching this video helps me to do so. 😢
I'm 37 and this song is just amazing. What an amazing voice! No contemporary singers are as good.
He had a great voice, not like the rubbish around now.
Too right Susan great all round
i agree more than i would like, they all use voice mods

He still has a great voice!👍🏻
Definitely.
during a time when EVERYONE spoke and sang in impeccable English, singing songs that touched the heart but were intellectually sound, understandable, moving and eternal. nothing today compares.

Today's musicians couldn't make a patch on music like this, his voice is amazing!
