  • I feel like it has been awhile since I started some seeds! Today I am starting cut flower seeds including gomphrena, cosmos, and saponaria. Growing cut flowers from seed is a great way to save on cost and also explore some interesting varieties.

    Thank you for actually showing how to sow these seeds. Most videos show the plants after they’ve germinated, but it’s important to show what depth to sow the seeds.

    I feel behind too but not due to keeping up with the Joneses as you put it. We are already in ninety degrees and it’s hard to start seeds in that weather. But such is life in the tropics. I wouldn’t change it for the world! I’m just going to keep plugging along.

      Gardening in the tropics is it own entity … so much to consider and deal with!

    Isn’t it great that we can get seed starting kits sized for home gardeners, not just the ginormous ones for flower farmers? Now we get colors too. Not everyone starts seeds in a basement. Or even has a basement.

      I have no concept of a basement 😂 I’ve never lived in a house with one!

    I'm feeling exactly the same way, so probably going to scale back a little and enjoy what I have 😊

    The Dutch Irises are gorgeous! You're saving so much money by starting from seeds. I've grown spoiled as I've aged and either direct sow into the garden or go to the nurseries to find the plants already started. I grew up on a farm where we started everything from seed either in greenhouses (hot beds) or direct sow, so, even though it costs more, I indulge myself and peruse the nurseries for what I need. BTW, my Bluestone Perennial order ships this week!!!

    Thanks for this honest assessment of where you are at right now. I can totally relate to being behind and overwhelmed at times and this is one of those times. I tried starting some gomphrena with the winter sowing method but none of my seeds sprouted. I think I planted them too deep, after watching this I'm going to try another round. Thanks Amanda!

    Yea!!! I love your flower arranging, and I'm glad you're starting!! I love even the simplest of arrangements.
    I, too, bought the same seedling trays since I'm just growing for myself, but I've had a heck of a time getting strawflowers to germinate this year. I'm on my 3rd try and not yet ready to give up. I'm wondering if it's my seed starting mix.
    The purple irises I have are from rhizomes (maybe Siberian), and they spread big time, and mine don't bloom until May. But when they do, there are a lot to cut from! I hope I can pair some with my hot pink peonies in an arrangement.
    Glad you found what you needed to keep going. I'll be watching to see the progress and those beautiful arrangements!!

      I’ve found that my strawflower seeds don’t keep more than a year .. how old are yours?

    • @hd1ab1
      @hd1ab1 ปีที่แล้ว

      @She's A Mad Gardener That's good information. The first 2 tries are with new seeds (Eden Brothers), the 3rd try is the new and some old. I just checked, and the old seeds (1 year) are sprouting. Isn't that crazy! Thankfully, I'll have something to put in my garden plan. Of course I threw in a ton of seeds into the trays to try and get anything and now I'll have to do all that editing.😕 (Of course, both packs came with a ton of seeds.)

    I don't grow gomphrena only because I don't have the space for them. The pink and white gomphrena will look like a flower girl bouquet. I am just wondering if any one wanted to use your purple gomphrena bouquets for their wedding. Enjoy the rest of your day.

      They germinated but unfortunately I missed watering them and they shriveled and died … I’ll be trying again!
