    We use "3D Nesting" in the industrial space all the time. The machines are cheap, but labor is expensive... so having a nested build, especially when you know your printer and your process are ultra reliable, makes perfect sense. Massive scale improvements in manufacturing require this type of printing, while keeping printing costs very low.

    • @HuntingHeresy
      @HuntingHeresy 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      But isn’t that also a massive waste of resin? Are resin parts recyclable? Wouldn’t it be more cost/time effective to use flex plates and just pop parts off more frequently than have to cut apart a nested print like this?

    • @williamsteele
      @williamsteele 2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      @@HuntingHeresy No, the material cost is usually the minimal component cost... And in some cases, like powder bed printers, there is no waste. It all depends on the particular process.

    • @n.v.4702
      @n.v.4702 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@williamsteele I will agree that material cost is a minor part if you compare extra resin usage to saving time with fewer intervals in cleanup and print setup. Though the comparison to powder seems unfair to the resin printer ;) With powder you want to use as much of your build volume anyways since you can't reuse it (without drawbacks and limitations) like resin. Powder printers have a clear advantage in stacking prints though, since gravity and supports aren't really an issue there. I've seen Joel talk about stacked resin prints before though it seemed to me that the part geometry should be optimized for it. Stacking complicated figures and the like on a resin printer seems like asking for trouble (As seen above)

    • @williamsteele
      @williamsteele 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@n.v.4702 Well, really, the above sample is a horrible implementation of supports... it's wasting so much space and material to make it not actually worth it. In the real world, supports are minimized and the parts themselves make up a lot of the supporting structure for the parts above and the supports are relegated to primarily serving the roll as stabilizers instead. (Tensile strength is needed for lifting... but very little lateral support is needed, and those loads can easily be transferred into the parts.) Optimizations (and knowing how to do it) is the whole reason some companies exist... it's a key part and doing it right can save you significant bucks in the end.

    • @Sir83chris
      @Sir83chris 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@HuntingHeresy consider it in terms of labour though - the Mars 2 Pro tank is what, 260ml to the Max line? And that whole thing printed just fine, so let's say you can definitely print three lots of Magneto for a fair bit less than a bottle of resin - so easily less than £25 in consumable cost, WAY less if you consider manufacturers will get all sorts of discounts on bulk purchases. If you print them separately, you then need a labourer to clean the print up THREE times every 1.5 hours (so call it 3 hours of labour). Fairly skilled labour at that, handling hazardous materials with care - so let's say £15/hour. With the nesting, you only need someone to clean up the print once - 1 hour of labour. By spending an extra £ or so on resin consumables, you've now saved yourself £30 in labour (or effectively freed up that employee's time to post-process other prints, so you could even consider that you can save a whole extra employee's wage in this way).
      Bear in mind I'm massively oversimplifying obviously, but that's the concept. Real companies will also put considerable time (as William mentions) into optimising the material useage so there's much less material waste than is shown here, and make it so they can do things like pop the entire thing into a bath and pop the supports right off in no time.

  • @TheDevilOnLine7
    @TheDevilOnLine7 2 ปีที่แล้ว +33

    I do this all the time, I get presupported miniatures, "float" them in the air on my second/third layer and then let Lychee auto generate supports to it. I then remove the supports that don't go the to the raft of the raised models. This minimizes the amount of waste (I guesstimate the supports uses less resin than the platforms), still allows you to stack multiple layers in an easy way and way cheaper (as you can just use your normal slicer).
    All you have to look out for, is to make sure that you don't have to many rafts at the same level, I always offset them a little bit from one another, so there isn't to much "pull" on the whole structure (and prevent the issues you were having with the rafts being seperated from the frame floors).

    • @MrDanderskoff
      @MrDanderskoff 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Could you do this but invert the models next to each other at an angle? Then could you just scale that layer vertically with the bases of the inverted models supporting the additional layers?

    • @TheDevilOnLine7
      @TheDevilOnLine7 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MrDanderskoff yes, but placing things at an angle, usually increases the space required and therefore limits the number of models that fit within the space.

    The main place I've seen this done is for dental prints, and the resin they use is waaay more expensive. Looks like part of the secret sauce, based on the video you shared from Formware, is that even the small rafts connected to the supports are perforated to reduce suction force. I'd definitely try and set up something like this if I were printing things that I planned to sell lots of copies of, but wow the potential for failures is huge!

    • @UncleJessy

    The other thing to try is bump up your layer time. That took me from hit and miss prints to perfect every time. And when you don’t care about print time (especially when printing over night) and extra few seconds per layer will make a huge difference. I bet that is why you still have some separation at the tower top and part bottom.

    • @logan_kes

      Sls is the way to go with this as you don’t lose any material to support as it’s just re used. The coolest part isn’t just doing layers, but sticking parts in the middle of other parts just floating there

    I've had the Mars 2 pro for a year now and I just got the Saturn a few weeks ago and the single most important thing I've bought for both of them is magnetic flex plates. I knew how much I loved that for my Mars, so didn't even use the Saturn a single time before plopping on its magnet - makes quick swaps so much easier. So don't think I'd even be able to do this as the magnet can't take so much weight (I'm mainly doing thin things (hence why I cant live without the flex as the main gripe with SLA is how incredibly stuck things can get). Also I recommend only using water washable resin, so much nicer for clean-up.

  • @a_pullin
    @a_pullin 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Using "platforms" is probably the most difficult way to do this, as you are aware (and have made videos about) the problems with flat surfaces.
    That being said: there's no reason you could not set up an optimization problem where models have a required orientation, and then a solver positions them relative to each other and make a huge, multiply branching tree of supports.
    It would be a super interesting computational geometry problem, really.
    It's too bad these extremely hard computational problems are holding back the resin printing toolset.
    Form Labs has some experts on this, but their tools are all platform locked.
    You should put out a request for a PhD candidate to tackle this and publish a paper on it.
    You could probably crowdfund a bounty to pay their stipend for a semester, requiring the implementation is open-sourced.

    Build the tower (successful one) then cut just the supports and have small park covered buildings. Then create scenes out of them! The larger supports look pretty cool! Maybe use other thin rafts as walls

    Did you try bringing them all into other slicers as a single stl model yet? The auto generate builds the supports without spearing through the parts. No special platform needed.

    Just ordered my first Saturn and it will arrive on the weekend.
    Keep it up m8

    Really cool concept. Might try using this for tabletop stuff since so many pieces are really small and doing a single layer ends up with a lot of extra time wasted by having to scrape them off and start another batch. Really curious how you got the smooth constant upward motion in the timelapse, though! I don't see the print head lowering back down for each layer. Did you figure out continuous printing somehow?

      @MrCow579 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a camera trick. If you get a light sensor, put it in the printer, and attach it to the remotecontrol shutter on the camera you can use the light that each layer uses as the trigger for a picture. Then each layer, the camera makes a picture. Then you simply put them from the first until last picture in a video editor and render it at however fast you want it (for example 24 pictures per second). Then it'll look like a video, but it is just a lot of pictures in reality :)

      I would love to see you like your zoom setting to future videos, for your Elegoo printers. Otherwise, this is an interesting concept, but seems easier to just print 3 plates in the same time as 1 super tiered plate.

    An automated resin refill system would make a great after-market product for people who employ the stacking technique.

    I think you could benefit from "stacking" if you put arrange the prints in a way that you used the empty volume of a print for another print.
    An example would be if you have pyramid shaped prints and then turn another "layer" of them upside down and in the empty spaces (stylized: AVAVAVAV).
    This way you would spare some time.

    resin getting cheap enough that for me at least when i have a ton of smaller prints stacking actually a good idea. Its very niche use case, but i once had to make 10000+ same ship mini details each about 10 mm. I did stack by hand in Fusion and printed whole order in one night on two anycubic photon s. That impressed my customer, but still was niche thing ever since. When you doing stuff at home you almost never will need to stack resin ever. Still good to know about the option tho. Good vid!
