Dr. Gary, with all due respect, it feels like a contradiction to discourage an applicant from trying to sound unique, but then criticize them for making "cliché" statements. One minute you discourage negative banter (which I agree with) but then you also take issue with applicants sounding overly positive, ie. feeling energized or excited about the day. I think there is nothing wrong with being super positive or relating something unique about yourself, as long as you can do it in a way that does not feel forced, sensationalized, or embellished. I am a dental student and I know the rush I felt the first week I assisted in Oral surgery. It was a gruelling experience without lunch and barely enough time for a water break, yet I left the building with a sense of excitement and contentment. After a year, the novelty of surgery has certainly diminished, but the interest and passion still remain. So when someone tries to sell their excitement, if it comes off as cheesy I would say it is more of a semantics issue rather than an "incorrect" approach.

My son is undergoing the process. This video tells me that there is a lot of simple luck in this process. Clearly, he is a better candidate than most who are featured in these videos. When schools only have to except 2 to 4% of all applicants, anybody can be left out simply by luck. I would go to this guy for my doctor.

    Definition of ecclesiastical
1: of or relating to a church especially as an established institution
2: suitable for use in a church
I don't even know how he was able to use this in a sentence lol. It's my first time hearing this word too. All I knew was Ecclesiastes from the Bible lol

Yeah I agree with the whole religious/ecclesiastical point Dr. Grey points out. If a school has an issue with that in one’s activities, it’s probably not a good fit for that applicant. In his activity, I don’t see anything controversial mentioned (abortion, euthanasia, anti-vaccination, ect), so I don’t really get why schools don’t like that? If those schools value diversity in all of its form then shame on them.

Dr. Gray has clearly never been to Provo, UT haha. It is very common for the former door-knocking missionaries to do pest control door-knocking. They are known as “summer sales bros”

the first thought that enters my mind when i hear ecclesiastical is church. it's really just a fancy word for church.. not sure who told him it separates him from religion

This guy got a total of 10 interviews his app for was fine on paper. Yeah he didn’t do things the way Dr. Gray like to see but he got plenty of interest and would likely not have had so much trouble getting in if he had better interview skills.

Hi Dr. Gary!! I noticed all of your videos emphasize the importance of submitting the application early, which I definitely will. My main worry is my school has a health evaluation committee and they do not begin the process of writing a letter until August (the head told me). Will this put my application behind?! Should I apply without the committee or is that a red flag for schools???

August is very very late in the application cycle.

You can apply without having the committee letter in hand.
