- Carmen Melanie Spitta is keeping the memory of her family alive, remembering other Romani people who were murdered in the Nazi concentration camps.
When the Nazis came to power in Germany about 90 years ago, their hatred and racism was primarily directed at Jewish people. Six million Jews fell victim to this hatred, but members of other groups, like the Romani people, were also mercilessly persecuted by the Nazis in various European countries, many being deported to the Auschwitz concentration camp. An estimated 500,000 European Romani did not survive the Nazi era, and among the victims were almost all of Carmen Spitta's relatives. The fate of her family weighs heavily on her shoulders, but that is precisely why she wants to make sure that their story is passed on to the younger generation.

You never hear the stories of any other minorities who were murdered during the holocaust. All of the other minorities who were killed always gets omitted from documentaries, or they're just left as an afterthought in history books.
This Romani story is important and I wish this was longer.
Not true at all. They are almost always mentioned, but numbers wise, none come close to the amount of jews killed.
I agree it is good to give the other groups their own stories, though.
@@Vanillevirus The records definitely exist of course, but tragically in 99% of the documentaries out there on the Holocaust, their stories are never told in any meaningful way. They’re just lumped in with other minorities and given a quick mention (if that.)

Hello I am Sinti from Germany. Thank you for the documentary about Sinti people during the Holocaust and talking about transgenerational trauma , many Sinti I know suffer from that including me 😢. Melanie Spitta did as a Sinti Filmmaker an important contribution for the civil rights movement. Without her it would have been not possible to reach such a big audience.
În the english speaking world people really don't care about Sinti. DW did again a good job giving us a Voice ❤ thank You or as we Sinti say: Bargrau man

Here in the US, I believe it's not that we don't care, but that our population is unaware of the Sinti in Europe and the challenges they've faced past and presents. In fact, until this video, I was unaware that Roma were known as Sinti, although because of my interest in cultures, history, and current events I knew your people are in every country there. In addition, I understand that you still face discrimination and worse in some countries. Something that I had hoped would've been gone in this century. I do hope progress continues and that we see ignorance and hate lose their voice. 💜🌍

Hey guys! I have read the comment section and I have a suspicion that most of you dont know who are Sinti. They have no connection with Jews whatsoever, they are completly different minority. Its shame that they are mostly omitted from history lessons, although they suffered the same horrific fate during world war.

The lack of action during the Holocaust remains a haunting and bewildering chapter in history. At the time, the world questioned why there was such a deafening silence, why couldn't people speak up about the atrocities?
Now, in an unfortunate twist of irony, a different conflict in the Israel-Palestine region has raised similar questions about silence and awareness. As we witness the distressing images about IsraelitEs killing Palestinians, so far we have witness the tragic loss of innocent lives, including the heart-wrenching toll on thousands of Palestinians children so far 10 000. There's simply no room for claiming ignorance or indifference.
The perplexity lies in how we can see such suffering and still remain passive. It compels us to acknowledge the situation and passionately advocate for peace.

About time certain people stop rubbing salt into wounds and making certain others feel guilt about something that happened over fifty years ago. Just like in my country, as government elections draw near, politicians are making sure apartheid is never forgotten by the masses and forgivenes not granted to the minority. 🤔
