Nazi prejudice and propaganda - the racist crimes against the "children of shame" | DW Documentary

  • After World War I, relationships between French occupation troops and German women were banned. But they happened anyway, and liaisons involving black soldiers produced a number of mixed-race children. Many were later persecuted by the Nazis.
Around 100,000 French troops were sent to occupy Germany's Rhineland region in 1920. About 20,000 of these soldiers came from the French colonies of Tunisia, Morocco, French Indochina, and Senegal.
The African troops became targets of a harassment campaign called "Die Schwarze Schmach," or "The Black Disgrace." German political parties, the media, and many organizations tried to discredit French occupation policies by falsely claiming that black French soldiers were systematically raping German women and children. The presence of black, North African, and Asian troops in Germany was depicted as a threat to the "German race" and the future of European civilization.
Between 1919 and 1928, several hundred mixed-race children were born in Germany's Rhineland region -- the product of liaisons between local women and French occupation troops. These children, their mothers, and extended families were socially ostracized from the very beginning.
In the 1930s, these children became victims of racist Nazi policies. In 1937, Adolf Hitler secretly ordered hundreds of them to be forcibly sterilized. A special unit of the Gestapo was set up to carry out this task.
This documentary, directed by Dominik Wessely, tells the story of a forgotten crime. It also explains how propaganda and toxic "fake news" reports can create an environment in which horrific crimes can be committed.

The story of little Willi Barth broke my heart. We must protect the most vulnerable of every society. I cried when they killed him, after he was so excited about being "accepted" into the military. Absolutely disgusting monsters we have on this planet amongst us even today. Do not be silent. Stand up for the most vulnerable among us.

Human nature is to beware of strangers. We are hard wired to be tribal. Forcing ppl to integrate (assimilate) led to children being born into a life of non belonging before the German culture could evolve.
Some of the WWII allies propaganda is still being utilized. YT channel "British pathe" has film of Dachau concentration camp being liberated & the film is blatant PR spin.

It only seems that way on the face of it. I lived in Germany as a child, and though they have laws against many things that even hint to Nazism, the reasons behind all these laws and posturing are never discussed. One of my clearest memories was spotting what I later learned was an Auschwitz tattoo on my favorite teacher; she caught my look and hid her arm in embarrassment. This was not an isolated thing; if I hadn't had parents so interested in our education, I could have easily left the country I lived in from 88-92 knowing nothing about the Holocaust.

I once had a project in school where we would go to the city archives of some towns in the area to collect information about people that got euthanized and sterilised during the nazi regime. Some People with disabilities often just physically, got deported to special hospitals and horribly experimented on. Often just children. We collected there stories and told them on an memorial event. Only if we stop telling these stories their murder truly wiped them out and the nazis won.

They had family and friends there, spoke the language and just wanted to be included. They should be able to feel accepted in their home countries.
Secondly, not everything would be perfect if they went to a mixed country. In Brazil and other places in Latin America, the high percentage of people with mixed heritage also came about because the colonial authorities literally encouraged "breeding out the blackness/ indigenous/...". Idk about Brazil I particular but "mejorar la raza" still is a commonly heard "joke" harking back to this practice. It means to "improve the bloodline" and especially older/conservative people like to make this "joke" when someone with deeper skin colour is dating someone with lighter skin (= presumably more white heritage). I finished school this year and had history class every week where we discussed almost every little detail from the 13th century until the 1980’s. I never got taught about this. It is a shame. Unbelievable and disgusting how the authorities acted. I was never aware how racist Germany was (even before the Holocaust). Teacher need to teach more about those horrific actions to educate kids and prevent further racism. Thank you for this documentary. I am absolutely heart broken.

Jesse Owens was the most decorated athlete at the Berlin’s Olympics. His top- competitor was a German athlete named Luz Long. Blue eyes, blond hair, the proto-aryan all designated to become the villain we were taught to hate. What hollywood and MSM in the US and antiracist bs groups don’t like about the following true story is that it doesn’t fit THEIR narrative.
Luz Long and Jesse Owens became best friends at these Olympics. A bit of research with tell you why. Interesting stuff. And there is this also:
"The Nazi officials at the Berlin Olympics", Jesse Owens told reporters. “would invite me in their VIP section, shaking my hand amd congratulating me warmly everytime I stepped down from the podium with a gold medal . I was treated like a dignitary by the Germans. The US president didn’t even bother to call me, for any medal, not once. I returned to the USA a Olympic champion, but I was not allowed to drink from the same waterfountains as the white people, couldn’t sit just anywhere I wanted to on buses. I was not allowed in this bar, that hotel, that swimming pool. None of that was happening in Nazi Germany. I met black folks who were just as German as the blondest of them”.

@@pinkpolka4229 The only people I can think of that fought for the Americans are the Filipinos and they were actually fighting a guerrilla war to win back their freedom from the Japanese. The Philippines was not a colony in the sense of British and French colonialism. The US granted the Philippines independence in 1946. Britain's grants of independence were hard wrought and only because it no longer could afford the troops it took to keep it's colonies. France was still fighting civil wars with its colonies until the 1950s. France doesn't actually free its colonies but keeps them bound with treaties that force them to use French companies for construction and to borrow only from French banks. France's Haitian colony was more an abandonment than a grant of freedom. Britain's hold is more a romantic attachment called The Commonwealth. I believe The Commonwealth will fall apart upon the death of Queen Elizabeth II.
The US kept Puerto Rico but doesn't rule it as a colony. At one time it was a major cog in the Caribbean defense network keeping the Russians and their Cuban client at bay. With the collapse of the Soviet Union PR doesn't hold the strategic value it once did and most of the US military bases have closed. There are discussions within Puerto Rico about becoming a US state or remaining a commonwealth. Statehood would be a mistake in my opinion ( I lived there for four years ) because in its present state it gets all the benefits of a state without an obligation to pay US income taxes. Not that they'd pay any since the majority of the population lives below the US poverty line and wouldn't pay any at all. A large part of the population receives SNAP (Food Stamps) which came to the island in the 1970s and replaced the Mantenga which was the distribution of US surplus dairy products. If the island voted for independence the US would benefit financially on the face of it. But practically, the new nation would just get foreign aid instead, a bribe to keep them away from the new danger, China.

Watching this just makes me think, when I was young I felt accepted I had many friends of all races , now I have this feeling racism can approach a person in the form of jealousy, I understand it's not a new way of thinking or concept but an excuse, a excuse to degrade a persons way of thinking, a person could question themselves, asking where do I really belong, it's only been 70 years since these events in these documentaries took place, and the generations that live in these times the ideology of then lives on, I mean a person only has their own experiences to make sense of things.
And again I ask this question is racism the same as going to the shop and having a choice out of what's for sale. Is it actually a choice or is it based on experiences.
When I watch these documentaries knowing that it wasnt that long ago life was like this,
and its still like this in the minds of many, am I safe from racism, did I get blamed for something a person of the opposite colour would get praised for.
Not only is there competition in the work place but now I feel it more, that a person of colour should be below the counterpart that would use colour as a benchmark...
Just those words even though I have many more, racism can steal a persons reality . .

Lol. The government knows the truth they are choosing not to see it and they know that they are wrong .. it's easier to redirect the focus on something else then yourself and so they feed into the distraction because the truth is painful and ppl don't want to hold themselves accountable for their bullshit .

I watched a interview of a Hamburg woman in USA. Her father was an African sailor. Interestingly she and a sizeable community lived through the war. With no government interest aside from exclusion from schooling. Her biggest danger, in her words, was the Allied bombing of Hamburg. I wish I could remember her name and reference that video here. I seem to remember she was in a Southern State in USA where she emigrated to in the late 50s. Very interesting accent. That high lilt Americanised and cadence slightly faster than American speed of speaking.

This is not some old-fashioned way of living, but it still applies to a large % of the world's population. Most people of today still rarely see any foreigners, guys. There are black youths in the USA who never encountered a white person well into their late teens or early twenties. For me that speaks of defacto segregation. On the plus side, I hope, those youths had relatively peaceful lives (?) because majority police force are white males.

@@ArtU4All Interesting comment! And I hope so, too, and I agree 100% with you. Imo (and I have travelled to quite a few places) mixing of cultures and races doesn't work... because humans have the "us vs. them" mentality engraved into their DNA. Kids vs. adults, men vs. women, my family vs. the neighbours, students vs. teachers. Only if you destroy all humans will you destroy this mentality. So there is no reason for anyone to be offended about that. Humans are tribe animals. Take away the tribe and the single human will become sick - mentally and physically. Also, and I digress, but I never really understood the word "cultural appropiation", cause the line is very very thin on what is "culture" and what is "mine", what is "yours". Potatoes originate from China, so is planting potatoes in my garden a "cultural" thing that I took away from the Chinese? What is "Chinese"? Cause China is big. Also, how much time has to pass until it is "accepted" that I, as a white person, do something of another "race"'s culture? Almost every "traditional Austrian dish" here is actually from another country.
I have met many East Asians, Nepali, Ivory Coast(?), and Khenians in the recent years, and they were all so happy when I tried on their clothes or tried their food. No one was ever "offended" that I wore a hanbok or a yukata. Only do I hear the hypocrite US-media (US-media is not leftwing, btw! Both democrats and republicans are by definition conservative/rightwing parties) cry about such issues, while the actual people themselves don't have any issue with it. To me, the media seems to be censoring minorities' way of life that way. It sounds in my ears like this: "Don't explore other cultures, don't try out anything from them, don't even dare to think about becoming interested in it!" Soon, you will not be able to say "black" anymore. Way to censor black people!
If I happen to ever go to the USA, I will definitely not treat any POC like some toddlers whom you need to be careful what you say around. I will treat them with respect and...for the lack of better word: normal! (The media is treating POC like mentally disabled people sometimes, and I am very surprised how hardly anyone is noticing it.) I have worked with a black person from Chicago once and he told me that my way of thinking is not at all offensive to him (I specifically asked him) and he could tell by my "directness" (Germans and Austrians tend to be more direct than where he is from) that he can actually trust that I am not slimy or shady.
I might sound like the biggest biggot right now, but honestly, to me personally it sounds rather positive that there are black kids in the USA who grow up with mainly black people. So I agree with you. It will make them become mentally stable (at least much more than what kind of confusion is going on in mixed neighbourhoods) and I regard this less as seggregation, but rather as an opportunity for a rather normal and decent childhood. (Of course, I can't really know what racism feels like. I've only been discriminated against in Korea and China as a white person, but it wasn't really aggressive, dangerous, or "evil". I will never know how people feel who are scared from white police officers.) I just hope those kids are ok, and sometimes I wished the movements of people to the USA and all those colonizations never happened. Maybe the world would have been a bit of a happier place then. Maybe.

Thank you Deutsch Welle for this wonderful and brilliantly informative piece of documentary. What I have learned from this documentary was that the rise of Adolf Hitler's National Socialism and the German Nazi Party was actually somewhat linked to the collapse of the German Monarchy. Something I have never thought of during my time as a history student back in university. I thought Hitler's rise to power was due to the widespread global economic depression in 1929 and German nationalism against the harsh terms of the Treaty of Versailles against the German National Interests after it's defeat in the First World War. But not all, as the documentary suggested, many ordinary Germans and nationalists regarded the Weimar Republic and the new democratically elected SPD government as traitors for signing the Treaty of Versailles. They wanted strong man rule, a new figure that can "make Germany great again" after the First World War. Therefore Adolf Hitler capitalized on this situation, by promising the German public to abolish Treaty of Versailles and to "Make Germany Great Again", Hitler automatically became the symbol of the new "German Kaiser".
Meanwhile, by signing the Treaty of Versailles, it allowed the French military to pull in African and Asian soldiers to police on German territories, the great racial humiliation contributed greatly to the latter German public's support to the Nazi Party.
