One of the reasons I was actually afraid for some of my favorite Clone Wars characters to appear when it came out because I knew it was going to make them look incompetent.
He actually did not lose the Battle of Atollon. Thrawn managed to force the rebels to retreat and he also destroyed the vast majority of their ships. He may did not end the Rebellion, but this battle was his victory.

I think there is a deeper reason behind Thrawn refusing to accept surrenders at the beginning of the battle, other than just 'being a villain'. He knows, that Hera and the others would never surrender. If they would, he would immediately know, that it was a trick and that they were stalling. He wants them to surrender and take them prisoner, but not before he defeats them, because at that point, they shouldn‘t have another trick up their sleeve. If he lets them surrender, before he has beaten them, they still have their whole strength and could try something, that could mess with the succes of his mission. That‘s why he doesn‘t want them to surrender until he has taken most of their assets out of action.
The only assets worth taking and the equipment the rebels have which is stolen from the empire for the most part, taking away Ezra so he can become a inquisitor and in all likelyhood disposing of Kanan and the rest.

I'm not a literary expert but I've never read or heard of or encountered a villain that is so meticulous and thoughtful and forward-thinking as Thrawn. He is literally the definition of three steps ahead.
Timothy Zahn (Thrawn Creator) has stated that Thrawn cannot be defeated, except by things he cannot predict or things that are outside of his control, like the force or insubordinate servicemen. I think Filoni adhered to this principle very well.

I love Thrawn but this part here gets Thrawn completely wrong “I want you to know utter defeat and that it is I who delivers it” he is described several times in the books (specifically canon) to not be gloating when he defeats an enemy and looks to prevent as much loss of life as possible.

Because hypersspace travel is, well, complicated to say the least. So you probably know about hyper lanes, being the safest and basically only way to travel through hyperspace. Most factions wouldn't have big enough fleets to completely surround the planet. Some planets, are the end point of a hyperlane, which makes it so there's only 1 way out of the system. A blockade works by positioning a fleet outside of the planets gravitational force, but on the exit/entrance of the hyperlane, which means that ships leaving or entering can only go through the blockade.

Strongly recommend anyone who enjoyed thrawn in rebels to read the characters origins in Timothy zahn’s original “heir to the empire” book series. Yes, it is no longer canon and you have to go into the book remembering it was written well before the prequels were even being discussed, but it is a FANTASTIC series and while thrawn is not a protagonist, he is definitely treated as the focused character. You’ll get a deeper dive into his motivations and thought process there. He is not a character that would be classified as good, but he does have his own sense of honor

One might say that Thrawn lost on Atollon, but he actually had more of a victory than the rebels did. The rebels may have escaped from Thrawn, but they lost the majority of their fleet and their base on Atollon, whereas Thrawn only lost a few cruisers. The only reason the rebels escaped with what they had was because of Konstantine being incompetent, as well as the unexpected arrival of the Bendu, neither of which Thrawn could've predicted. And even though Konstantine getting himself killed may have set Thrawn back, he still almost captured the rebel leadership despite that.
When Thrawn says "It's crew is irrelevant." Does that mean he's ordering their destruction or is he letting them go. The crew on the star destroyers asked the same question.
I just couldn't believe that Kanan and Ezra didn't just take this opportunity to snap Thrawn's neck. Sure, it'd be dishonorable and Dark-Sided, but come on! Take one for the team! Luke did in ROTJ when he choked those Gammorrean guards in Jabba's palace, and he's the most light-sided character in the movies barring Qui-Gon. Why can't these two twerps make that sacrifice, too?
Luke didn't kill the Gammorrean. That would be commiting to the dark side. Using the force choke but not killing is one step away from turning to the dark side, since only Make Windu used it and he was a prick.
Not every force-user is capable of choking someone via hologram. I know Vader was able to do it via video call, but Vader is in an entirely different league than Kanan the annoying blue-haired twerp.

It could be seen as out of character for Thrawn to gloat like this, but in my opinion is all part of his tactic. Makes them believe that they are facing another snob imperial officer, while also putting them under pressure as they realise that he is telling the truth about their situation .

I loved how Thrawn was actually a tactical genius...it was refreshing to see a smart bad guy. It also caused Ezra to grow as a character and learn how to outsmart Thrawn. TL;DR Even though Thrawn was playing chess, Ezra learned to play 4D chess

Some thing to use a lot of in Star Wars is the XNY axis but no one talks about the Z axis, why can’t you literally fight under the blockade? Because the blockade is only a certain dimension thick in the Y axis so theoretically it be like easier to fly down and around them then directly at them as space is vast empty, I genuinely don’t understand in these shows why people always have to head straight through the blockade, space is big enough you could fit like 1 billion of your spaceship in between the two closest planets and your decision is let’s cry and complain about the blockade rather than going over it or under it🙄????
At sublight speeds, they'd still never break the blockade without an opening. Eckhart's Ladder has done some great videos explaining egress points on planets and systems regarding hyperspace lanes and their essential purpose in hyperspace travel. The Alliance fleet is heavily outnumbered and outgunned, so if they break their formation they will be much easier to pick off, and if they all try to fly together in strength under or over the blockade it will just adjust it's position and all they will really be doing is flying closer to what they are trying to avoid, and further away from the safe jump point, it would be a pretty useless gesture. The outcome would be more or less the same as what happens in the episode.
Considering how badly the Rebels were routed from Atollon, I’d say he did bring them the crushing defeat he promised. Phoenix Cell effectively ceased to exist after these two episodes.

Hux is an interesting character in his own right I think. I'd recommend reading the Phasma novel, it gives some really interesting insight into why the First Order's officers are seemingly incompetent. One of the few things I loved they carried over. Refusal of surrender. Why do you accept surrender? That means the enemy is cowards and willing to give up. That’s bad. Eliminate them before accepting them.
The problem aint they being cowards, the problem is Thrawn knows the rebels will never respect the conditions of the surrender, and will sabotage them and run away the first chance they get, so to prevent further losses to the empire they are to be put down, it´s common sense

I just couldn't believe that Kanan and Ezra didn't just take this opportunity to snap Thrawn's neck. Sure, it'd be dishonorable and Dark-Sided, but come on! Take one for the team! Luke did in ROTJ when he choked those Gammorrean guards in Jabba's palace, and he's the most light-sided character in the movies barring Qui-Gon. Why can't these two twerps make that sacrifice, too?
Luke didn't kill the Gammorrean. That would be commiting to the dark side. Using the force choke but not killing is one step away from turning to the dark side, since only Make Windu used it and he was a prick.
Not every force-user is capable of choking someone via hologram. I know Vader was able to do it via video call, but Vader is in an entirely different league than Kanan the annoying blue-haired twerp.

@@GhostRavenFIN Vader also had training with Force choking and with the whole visions thing from Sidious he probably gained a higher range of Force abilities, Ezra and Kanan will never come close to this, this kind of force feats are at least Rule of 2 Sith level for a reason.

It could be seen as out of character for Thrawn to gloat like this, but in my opinion is all part of his tactic. Makes them believe that they are facing another snob imperial officer, while also putting them under pressure as they realise that he is telling the truth about their situation .

I loved how Thrawn was actually a tactical genius...it was refreshing to see a smart bad guy. It also caused Ezra to grow as a character and learn how to outsmart Thrawn.
TL;DR Even though Thrawn was playing chess, Ezra learned to play 4D chess

Some thing to use a lot of in Star Wars is the XNY axis but no one talks about the Z axis, why can’t you literally fight under the blockade? Because the blockade is only a certain dimension thick in the Y axis so theoretically it be like easier to fly down and around them then directly at them as space is vast empty, I genuinely don’t understand in these shows why people always have to head straight through the blockade, space is big enough you could fit like 1 billion of your spaceship in between the two closest planets and your decision is let’s cry and complain about the blockade rather than going over it or under it🙄????
In star wars a blockade of a planet is atleast a fleets worth of ships covering all vectors of escape ad entry to a planet
At sublight speeds, they'd still never break the blockade without an opening. Eckhart's Ladder has done some great videos explaining egress points on planets and systems regarding hyperspace lanes and their essential purpose in hyperspace travel.
The Alliance fleet is heavily outnumbered and outgunned, so if they break their formation they will be much easier to pick off, and if they all try to fly together in strength under or over the blockade it will just adjust it's position and all they will really be doing is flying closer to what they are trying to avoid, and further away from the safe jump point, it would be a pretty useless gesture. The outcome would be more or less the same as what happens in the episode.

O_O, FKG GOD, really hope one day all disney's film crews including producers, will join hands and jump from a cliff. They are an insult to everything cloe to art. Hux is an interesting character in his own right I think. I'd recommend reading the Phasma novel, it gives some really interesting insight into why the First Order's officers are seemingly incompetent.

One of the few things I loved they carried over. Refusal of surrender. Why do you accept surrender? That means the enemy is cowards and willing to give up. That’s bad. Eliminate them before accepting them.
The problem aint they being cowards, the problem is Thrawn knows the rebels will never respect the conditions of the surrender, and will sabotage them and run away the first chance they get, so to prevent further losses to the empire they are to be put down, it´s common sense

This animation style looks like shit. Like, it's entirely down to how smooth and play-doughey everything looks.
Abyssmal writing. This has anime quality. Having the bad guy directly say what they think and pronounce it in such an open, childish and brute manner is simply not something anyone would ever do. How about a little more subtlety, a little more "let actions and demeanor speak for themselves"? Ah I forgot, this show was actually made for children.
