  • Grand Moff Wilhuff Tarkin, the Imperial Governor of the Outer Rim, lands at the Imperial Complex on the planet Lothal. Upon arrival, he was greeted by Minister Maketh Tua, who was surprised to learn of his visit. Tarkin then proceeded to reprimand her for failing to protect Imperial industrial interests. He then castigated Agent Kallus for allowing a rebel cell to flourish on Lothal. In response, Kallus told Tarkin that he had exhausted every resource to capture them. When Tua informed Tarkin that the rebel leader was a Jedi, the Grand Moff mocked the Grand Inquisitor's incompetence. He also expressed doubt that the rebel leader was a Jedi and asserted that the Jedi had all died. Tarkin then vowed to capture "this criminal" and prove that he was not a Jedi.

He made the officers be an example for Kallus and Tua to show them the consequences when you fail the Empire. He even turned his back to the officers and looked at Kallus and Tua so that they knew he was referring to them.

      @samsonguy10k 3 ปีที่แล้ว +40

      @@N7xVoss That's just a EU fanbase theory that's really honestly dumb.
      The Death Star was always meant to be a deterrent and a weapon of terror against any system that opposed the Empire. It would be the same as if a tyrant today decided to start advertising the willingness to use a nuclear bomb against any city that opposed them.
      The thing with the Death Star is by itself it is not a naval weapon. Even being attacked by cruisers it is quite vulnerable as the cruisers can get themselves out of being vulnerable quite easily, as was shown in Return of the Jedi when they enmeshed with the Imperial Fleet. Those same cruisers can carry hundreds of fighters which the Death Star is incredibly vulnerable to. That alone rather defeats some idea it was meant for some extra-galactic threat. Was the idea to send the Death Star to their worlds and start blowing them up? So many ways to stop that from happening by anybody who knows what's what.
      Let's make one thing absolutely clear that certain comic and novel authors can't get through their heads. Emperor Palpatine cared for nobody else but Emperor Palpatine. He was not working to improve life in the galaxy but to secure his own hold on it. And if he could not secure that hold then the whole thing could burn.
      This weird thinking that there was a single benevolent cell in such a creature as Palpatine is dumb thinking. We may as well think there was good in Hitler, Mussolini, and Tojo, too. Or Qadafi and Hussein.
      Maybe the Khmer Rouge did nothing wrong.
      Trying to flesh out an evil character by giving them benevolent actions but they still remain the evil character is poor writing. An evil character who does seek redemption is not poor writing, but that's not Palpatine. That story was for Anakin.
      That was one thing Rise of Skywalker did get right. Even in a clone, the personality of Palpatine is still a genocidal power-hungry maniac.

      Not just that, the way he handles himself, the way to subdue the hope around the Jedi and the correct view to stop the Rebel cells unifying.
      The actor, and the writing is spot on for me, though I'm not hardcore fan, never read any books, only films. But to me, Tarkin is exactly what was needed to make him look that much more ruthless and justifiably evil in the film A New Hope. In that film, he was just an evil leader. Now. We have true reason to fear him.
      He was always willing to sacrifice and cut off any weakness, ultimately leading him, to do the greatest evil. Destroying a planet, full of Imperial citizens, though rebellious.

      After he returns to the Empire, they assume he is a traitor for deserting the Empire (despite it not being true) and torture him. Finally realizing that the Empire were the villains all along, he breaks free of his bondage and declares himself a rebel (specifically, a "Skywalker").

      It was something for him to consider, to be sure. But he was still in good favor with Tarkin to be trusted to get his work done, and while he did fail on capturing the rebels, he did achieve other goals in the process.
      While Kallus was loyal to the Empire, as he was buying its message of peace throughout the galaxy, he also was able to respect Kanan and the Ghost Crew for what they were able to achieve with so little. Sun Tzu has a few words on that matter. However, to him they were still criminals who were only inevitably going to screw up.
      That's why his time being marooned with Zeb was the turning point for him. Kallus never expected to be treated well by the rebels, and here he had Zeb splinting his leg, giving him warmth, and helping him get out of that hole. And then Zeb did the next unexpected thing. He gave Kallus the choice to come with him onto the Ghost, without being a prisoner.
      I don't see Tarkin's execution of these two officers as a turning point for Kallus. But it was certainly something to reflect back on as he started being aware of what the Empire truly was.

Here you have two officers that have failed in their task but are absolutely Loyal to the Empire to a fault and they are executed for it, meanwhile, you have Admiral Konstantine constantly failing and yet never being punished for it. There's also how his superiors treat those below him, when the rebels came for Zeb, they gave him a warm welcome and were glad to see him safe and sound. Meanwhile back on the star destroyer, Kallus has nobody to welcome him, it's all distant and cold. I don't think that's what he was doing. He was neutral but then he narrowed his eyes to convey he was about to do something evil to the audience. That's not hesitation, that's basic "the bad guy now looks evil because he's about to do something evil" animation.
      I also really think this show has some of the worst expressions and conveyed emotions of any animated show. The animators really aren't good at animating eyebrows, it makes the characters seem too expressive. Like they don't react like normal humans beings, their eyebrows are doing a dance on their forehead and it confuses their emotions. It looks unnatural.
      To see this problem, take any scene in Star Wars Rebels and cover up their forehead. Look at their mouths and noses and imagine how their eyebrows should move to match those emotions. Then uncover their foreheads, do the eyebrow movements match? In nearly every scene, no. The fact is, the animators were good at moving eyebrows, but they didn't know how to use those moments to convey the correct emotions and it ends up muddling and overcomplicating the facial animation to the point where the viewer does not understand the expression the characters are supposed to be making.

Mickey Mouse send probe droids to every corner of the studio and the parks, Donald Duck post Stormtroopers at every entrance and exit. Goofy send Inquisitors to every movie critic in Hollywood. If anyone dares to speak ill of our movies, or if anyone insists on making more pointless sequels to our classic movies or more of these ridiculous tween shows, we will make examples of them.

    I really enjoyed this scene for several reasons:
    Those two imperials were really just stereotype comic incompetent comic relief bad guys as seen in many animated kids shows. With Tarkins arrival and decision to execute them for their failures it demonstrated the true tyranny of the empire, not tolerating incompetence. It also shows us more of how much of a threat Tarkin, ruling with fear and punishing what he considers as failures with death.
    Its the perfect way to get rid of the kids show image.

    Tarkin is EASILY the second most evil Imperial. Ordering to kill was of no second thought for him. No remorse, nothing. In fact, I think he took sadistic pleasure in killing/giving orders to kill and destroy. He is second in evil only to Palpatine.
    Vader at least had multiple episodes of remorse in his private chambers and suffered from severe depression because of what he had done. But was sadly too snared by the dark side to do anything about it, until he was saved by his son.
    Kallus looked truly horrified for those two officers here, and got a glimpse of the evil that was employing him. Though he didn't fully come to appreciate tgis fact until season 3. This moment here sowed questions in his mind.
    Tua was never truly even a bad person. She literally said she was simply looking out for tge people under her. And then of course seeing this cold blooded order and act of murder completely opened her eyes. Not only did she begin fearing for her own life, but she was truly repulsed at the evil that manifested itself right before her eyes. Not long after this, she attempted to defect. I wish she would have survived, she deserved better.

      In my opinion, Tua should have been spared long enough to become an unofficial pupil of Thrawn, becoming the 'Watson' to Thrawn's 'Holmes', so to speak. (Similar to Gilad Pellaeon's role in the Thrawn trilogy).
      And while it's certainly true that Tua "lacked imagination when it came to producing results" (according to Vader), I have a hunch that Tua would have outgrown this flaw and become far more effective under the guidance of Thrawn (who is described as "endlessly patient with those willing to learn").
      And considering how Thrawn's signature trait is his deep appreciation for the arts, it's very plausible to imagine that Thrawn and the cultured/ladylike Tua would have found common ground with each other.
      Anyway, even though Tua no longer has any future (as far as the current canon is concerned), there's always room for "what if?" when brainstorming for fan fiction. :)

    • @SirMarshalHaig
      @SirMarshalHaig 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@topnotchshinobi I thought the same. With Thrawn seeing the brutality of the Empire as a flaw (when I recall his novel correctly) Tua´s civillian ruler approach, that I see in what little we get from her, would have been much less dangerous for the stability of Lothal. Working together with Thran on a precise military solution, probably combined with improving the situation for the citizens, he and Tua could have damaged the rebels way worse than terror tactics.
