See what you could accomplish with that piston and a few minutes on a polisher wheel. Then polish the inside of the cylinder. If you can smooth the scoring out, install the piston 180 degrees from the original position and see if it will run.
Nice teardown but imho rarely worth even tearing those lower end machines apart other than for curiosity. Unless they ran it with the air filter off and sucked something in i would agree that some little chunk of something internal broke off or a burr from casting let loose in there.
To me it looks like the piston and crank are bone dry. Even when looking through the exhaust port the piston looked dry. You should expect oil on the interior of the engine. That blower was either straight gased or they had poured something else in the fuel tank.
I always put more oil in the mix than recommended, especially on break in . I never have had a problem. And thorough mixing the oil and gas in the container is very important.
I have the newer model of this. I just found 4 of the RY38BP on ebay for less then $70 bucks that seem to have the same issue. (Them all being sized) So purchased a parts blower. Looks brand new as well. I WILL be making a video on my failure as the DARN FAN seemed to have came off! I noticed something was wrong when it started to vibrate a lot more. Then it had trouble keeping up RPM. Then today? POOF! The engine went WAY up in RPM. And hardly any air was coming out of the blower. Yup. Has to be a fan failure. Looked up the part for the fan, and found I could get an entire blower sent to my door from Ebay for just a few dollars more. So jumped on that offer. Since the Blower is Plastic? Its pretty easy to fix anyways, but thought it would be a good idea to have lots of spare parts on hand. BTW? you can always use a heat gun or Soldering Iron to Heat up the bolt as well. Worked for me a long time ago. Also, I wonder if you can just rehone the bore and polish the piston a bit to put it back in service?
FYI, years ago I was doing some front end work on a Ford and the bolts were immovable, until I heated them with a torch and doing that loosened a ton of thread locker on the threads. Heated them, cleaned them up and it was smooth sailing from that point forward. I put thread locker back on the bolts but not quite so much. No point putting that thing back together. It truly is a "basket case". You are one dedicated soul!👍
Ryobi is known for issues with getting parts, can’t find individual parts. Like a stocker stud on a 4 stroke weedeater. They want whole motor replaced or nothing internally. I found that you can take a Troy Bilt stud and use a tap and die set to get Troy Bilt one into the ryobi. Got a few seasons out of it!!!
I had been using Ryobi 4-Cycle weed-eater handhelds, with inter-changeable attachments, for decades. Last year, I purchased a Ryobi 2-Cycle weed-eater handheld at Home Depot. It's compatible with my legacy attachments. I was very worried that the same thing might happen to my new small engine purchase that you are talking about with the Ryobi Blower that your customer brought to you. So, I only use Amsoil SABER Professional Synthetic 2-Stroke Oil, by Amsoil in Superior, Wisconsin. I'm not an Amsoil salesman. I'm just trying to improve the odds of getting my cheap Ryobi 2-Cycle machine to last.
May be able to measure the rings and speak to an aftermarket supplier to see if they can provide an equivalent. Try HLS, they might be able to match them. You can probably just lhone the cylinder, clean up the piston and put new rings in it.
Check the spark plug for missing a portion of the electrode. Also what is the date of Mfg, Ryobi has a 3 year warranty. since the block assembly is no longer available, (and can’t get any warranty) free up the rings and flip the and he may get another year out of it…
These sell for about $200 new. Ryobi handheld equipment is low grade. A customer dropped off a blower just like yours in video. I used the carburetor to repair another customer's Ryobi blower.
Great how-to! I was able to find a new power head on ebay for $47 +freight! I was surprised that it came complete with carb, flywheel and muffler! I watched this video so I could put it back together! Lol
Unfortunately, most of the Ryobi equipment I have dealt with ends up like those old gas station flashlights with irreplaceable batteries. When it quits working, throw it away. Your mileage may vary.
This is the same blower I have if you noticed all the other BP 42’s have the fat filter cover and choke knob is on top vs side. I just rebuilt a carb ( try to find the right one) I found on eBay for a walk behind ryobi and I had to mcgiver the throttle cable assembly. If you know where I can find the proper parts for this model I would so appreciate. I’m still not running at full going to try to tweak the mixture when I get home today. If you have any tips. Thanks for your video
I'm in the same boat at the moment with a Remington badged MTD chainsaw with scoring from an air leak. No piston, or cylinder. The scoring isn't as bad as it looks. Doesn't run the full length of the piston, and cylinder. Hopefully I can "spit&shine" both, and install new rings. It's my brother in law's first chainsaw so I'm gonna do what I can to fix it, and tell him to retire it to a shelf since he has a Husqvarna 440 now.
many years ago I bought a Ryobi weed whacker that was 4 stroke...just put gas in it and go....seems like consumer models should all be like this to eliminate possible user error...it lasted 10 yrs before I gave it away....just went electrics and didn't need it any longer
I was checking out your video and noticed the blower you were working on was the same as mine. the problem I have with this blower is it starts no problem but high speed is not that good and I cant seem to adjust the speed due to not finding the high speed or idle screw and I cant find any information on this carburetor. This is where I would like some guidance.
Just checked... All I Gots is the newer RY38 BP Block. The 42 was a better engine, but the 38 was just a better blower all around. Both still throw aways. 🤷🏼♂️ That's a shame. For $50.00/$100.00 more they could have bought an Echo, but the Ryobi allegedly has a 3 year warranty on manufacturer defects. 🤔 Then again these haven't been sold for a few years. 😕
It's more trouble than it's worth, but you could tig weld the cylinder and re bore it and also tig weld the piston to build back material on each of them, then grind to tolerances and re install rings. But that's a lot for a leaf blower.
I'm working on a similar Ryobi backpack blower. The impeller fan rubbed on the outer housing causing it to melt and seize up. Have to replace the impeller and outer housing.
Bought the same exact blower 8 years ago, nothing but problems after 1 season. Got an Echo PB-580 as replacement, Ryobi doesn’t even come close in quality.
The cost of repair exceeds purchase price on most Ryobi machines. The manufacturers pretty much view these machines as landfill. You can see why guys like James Condon focus on generators. Other high end machines like concrete chainsaws and jetters are where there's justification for people to spend cash on repairs.
Interesting, they way the piston is scored in that one particular area and the rest is smooth including the cylinder wall, looks like something got in the chamber to cause that?
I’m having the same problem but the fan isn’t spinning… I have a newer model and the fan is just stuck… is it supposed to spin? Looks like it’s glued and not an actual fan blade. The motor isn’t stiff and spins around smoothly. The pull cord won’t budge.
The foam filter on the carb is Very Soft and weak. Just about every new one I've opened was folded one way or another... So YEAH, plenty of rubbish could have been sucked in ? 🤷🏼♂️ If you set it down, the bottom mounted fan throws up debris like a Rabid Harrier On Crack !!! 😳
So weird . Maybe one of the rings where to big . End cap over spec. ? Who knows . Does the score line up with ring pin or that area of piston ?I like how you checked the pull mechanism first. I’ve seen jamb up on other products before. To bad looks almost new.

I get my impact if my DeWalt drill will not break it looseand put my T27 bit in it. It will easily remove 120 foot pounds. Don’t you just hate it when they mix up torx bit screws and Allen screws?
Might not be a defect. My brother gave me his old one and said it wouldn't run right. I took it apart and seen a few scores in the cylinder wall and on the piston. Nothing dark, burned or seized. I asked him if he ran straight gas in it and he said no. I asked him how much oil did he mix with it and his answer was "I don't know, I never measured it, I just eyeballed it maybe about an once or so in about a gallon of gas". Not enough oil !!!

I always put more oil in the mix than recommended, especially on break in . I never have had a problem. And thorough mixing the oil and gas in the container is very important.
Generally it will not hurt the engine with more oil in the mix. At some point it will start smoking though.
