You should take in volunteers like the other Chateau owners do, you acn get a lot done for food and lodging, and the volunteers really seem to enjoy rebuilding history.

Brambles ! No one loves them but at the end of the summer, they gift us with blackberries. I remember, as a kid, when brambles were more common along the small roads around my grand parents house in Brittany, we went to pick up the blackberries and we often came back with buckets full of them. My grand mother used them to make confitures. Lots and lots and lots of confitures pots. It usually took her a few afternoon to cook it. A few dishcloths and rags became purple black during the operation but they were exclusively used for it so… we were allowed to take a few pots (jars?) back home to retain a taste of Brittany during the winter. Be mad at the brambles but do not forget the potential confitures!
About your cottage, I find interesting to see these paneled walls: I remember that our « maison bretonne » had one, back in the days of my great grand parents. I don’t know if they were used anywhere else in France but wood panel walls were a bit common in Brittany. Back at home, they also had this deep dark wood color which gave the house a rather « strict » look. My grand parents tore them down when they moved in and refurbished the house a few years later. Anyway, you have two very « breton » cottages. :-)
One last thing: we tend to build things to last: don’t expect the bar to accept to go down without a fight!
Thanks, as usual for the taste of Brittany in your vlog. It means a lot to me as I am far away. Cheers from Brussels ! M.

Ah yes! We do take advantage of the blackberries :) We have SO many at the end of summer.
Very interesting regarding the paneling - I must admit I do like the black color! Thanks for your comments, it's nice to have a real Breton chiming in :)

@@OurFrenchChateau Dark wood panels could be absolutely awesome with the proper interior design, I agree. Besides that, wood treated properly can create an olfactory signature that would really make such places uniques.
I'll follow with great interest your future work on this part, on top of the great pleasure to see a breton chateau resurrected!
Have a nice sunday, best, M

Really cool cottages! They'll be so nice and useful when restored! A couple of other chateaux channels I watch have a bed and breakfast during spring and summer months and rent out rooms. If you wanted you could make some decent money by renting the cottages out. If they had kitchens you wouldn't really have to cook for them. They could just rent the cottages for a beautiful place to stay while visiting the area. The two channels I watch the most are Chateau Diaries and How to Renovate a Chateau (without killing your spouse). You might wanna check them out! Can we see a tour of the chateau with any history you know about it? I would love that!

A walled garden is so special and absolutely needed in order to become more self-sufficient. Do you have a green house of lean-to cold frame? Needed. I hope your kids will take this over one day and end up with a chateau they grew up in and remembered Mom, Dad, animals and Grandma and the cool car-as well as make friends and enjoy school there. Do you all speak French? It's beautiful there. Such a great thing to do when you ar young an energetic enough, have the moola to do it right and encourage each other. A lovely thing. Best, TS, USA

You could bolt steel bars on each side of the beam and into the wall then box them in or paint them with the beam if you want to keep an open space. The most important area is where the beam enters the wall. We took several tons of earth and bricks from the upper floor of our home and the whole floor raised up 10 cms so it no longer rested on the main beam. We then had the whole room sandblasted, it was messy but worth it. We painted the beams to give the room more visual hight and cover the repairs.

You should check out Justin Rhodes channel. He rotates his stock using movable electric fencing. I think it's called Perma Fence (?). Anyway, why mow when you could have the donkeys eat and fertilize your lawn? The hedge looks great. FYI wisteria will tear a structure down. Cut out all the oldest branches by 1/3 or 1/4 every year. Trust me, you can't hurt it. The worst you treat wisteria, the more it comes back.

And all that furniture, packed away... I was thinking, it might be easier to assemble, than you think. I don't know what paint you use but if you have a 'Leroy Merlin' near you, they have all the Farrow and Ball paint recipes in their computer and you can have the same colours made up at a much cheaper price and for me the coverage is so much better. I just bought F&B for my kitchen and after FOUR coats I'm still not happy, it was yellow over white so not that hard to do. I keep telling myself NOT to buy their paint. Little Greene seems a better quality and also Edward Bulmer, harder to get here. Looking forward to following your adventure, you can never have enough 'new' chateau owners in France ! I live in Dordogne where there are over 1000 registered Chateau ! xo

You are right : F&B is very good at marketing, but not so much at quality. The colours seem always very beautiful when you look at them, but they are not high quality, and they don't last. I used to work with scenographers, and they all buy their products at Tollens… which is an industrial brand ! 🙂 They can make the coulour you want. Cheaper, and super resistant.

When onlookers ask,..just tell them that the giraffe are large dogs...that produce many lively babies...that kind of look just like goats. :-/
And as long as you don't teach the giraffe or goats any French, they cannot be questioned about any of it.

Where visitors could imagine men shooting arrows then retreating back to the protection of the merlin to reload and muster the courage to fire again while being fully exposed to the enemy. Oaky...okay I concede. The hedge looks perfectly beautiful as it is. I wonder if the industrial mowers used on the side of the roads by maintenance crews could easily be converted to fit your tractor....or if there is one such trimmer for designed for small tractors. Once the is for certain, all of these "little" jobs in the garden require a week or two of work at the start of the season followed by two days each week throughout the season. Investing in modern tools goes a long way to free up your valuable time. Perhaps you could find a local landscaper to barter and trade with. Do you have extensive woods to harvest timber or firewood? Possibly offer growing space or fruit, veg, and flowers from your "organic" walled garden to trade for services or equipment rental. Offer a room for them and/or their guests during the off season. One of the advantages of having such a property is the endless opportunities to barter and trade goods and services with friendly locals and those looking for a working holiday on a budget (trading their muscles or skills for room and board). The downside to having such a property is all of the chores are on a super-sized scale. Nevertheless you two make it all look so effortless and beautiful.
Yes... the two bedroom cottage only requires a lick of paint, spit and polish. The soot adds that layer of homey many find impossible to replicate. Lucky you. Cut a dowel or plant of wood to fit across the window to rest on the batten following the angle of the roof on either side. A board propped against the window could be worked lose if there is enough of a breeze rattling through. The upper area with the fireplace makes for a great winter salon. All of the heat from cooking rises to heat the second floor. The fireplace will keep the second floor toasty all night, provided you're able to install a good amount of insulation. Please kept in mind the wood and lime need to breathe. Don't follow the methods of other château DIYers by sealing everything up tightly. I fear those intrepid owners may find themselves spending millions down the road on repairs because due to their use of modern techniques and materials for insulating modern structures caused extensive damage to the wood and lime. A few of your fellow château owners seem to be collecting and trapping moisture in the form of condensation in their walls thanks to the materials and methods employed to insulate and finish off attic spaces. Expert advice is key to ensuring you are not unintentionally harming the structure. Im sorry to say advice from the lad at Brico Dépôt does not suffice. Haha. Those cottages will be so charming and popular amongst self-catering guests when finished and available for let. You will need to break it gently to your mother. If necessary she may need to give up her cottage from time to time when guests book it despite being on offer for triple the market rate. If someone is willing or naive enough to pay triple the market rate, mama will be forced to camp out in the attic guest room during their stay. Everyone (aka a select few) must sacrifice for the good of the châteaus finances....at least until the château can pay her way in this modern world.
    Cheers!

having a post placed in the middle of the sagging beam is not going to fix it. Does it have woodworms in it? why is it sagging?

Do you have a local library, or historical association around there?
I learned so much about the properties where I've lived researching those sources ❤

Someone, who loves history, about thirty or more years ago, made all these xeroxed 'books' with old photos, and filled with local lore from around here (SW Colorado)...
Maybe someone did something similar around your land?

Back in the day you were charged tax by the amount of windows you had. Many properties had their windows closed off.

Si vous prévoyez de conserver la haie, il faut vraiment vous équiper de matériel plus sérieux, un équipement filaire est trop pénible et pas assez puissant.
If you plan to keep the hedge, you should buy a more serious, powerful and uncorded tool. This type of hedge (laurel) grow fast !
