    When Brian can just pull out the bricks with his hand effortlessly, you know the stone wall was too fragile. Glad you found a solution that will make the building stronger, without compromising safety. Never apologise for prepwork, and for recording that prepwork. Some channels don't show the hard and boring prep in their desire to show a quick turn-around. We appreciate every bit of your work, Dan, and Nick and Brian. We'll be here watching until it is done. The mortar between the bricks/stones is there not to stick them together but to keep them apart - this is a classic principle of masonry, so that fact that Brian can pull out the bricks is no indication of the integrity of the wall. All of this masonry is bedded in lime mortar, which has the attribute that it allows the wall to move during expansion and contraction.

    • @SuziSellsSound
      @SuziSellsSound 20 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      Agree!! Prepwork is key. It's important that people see the prep so they understand that a "quick turn around" is video magic. Doing your own DIY means plan and prep for a good outcome.

    It's definitely wise to dismantle those wall sections. Heat (from fires) rises and clearly that mortar is fire degraded. Collapses are foreseeable. Please apply that understanding throughout the upper floors. I see the front archway being tied in with the mansard rafters. That is a positive development.

    Just found your channel, well done so far,, truly a lot of work, I know what you are going through, have bought a chateau in Upper Normandy, being 4 floors, and cellar, this was in 2016, still now and over many,, many visits to hardware stores replacing all the 3rd and second flooring joists, flooring and plaster work from bottom to top, looking at your project you are a brave man, bravo mate I enjoy your enthusiasm, possibly a labour of love so to speak,,,,,,
    Having removed and replaced all my 36 windows through 4 floors just now with PVC triple glass windows; all the windows were different in size and had to be made on site,,, a lot of hard work and swearing, only thing left is introducing a solid state cast iron wood burner in the fire places x 3, had to remove the old diesel fired hot water heater as it sucked 800 euro fuel every month and converted to gas,, one tip mate you need very deep pockets for this venture in France and I wish you all the very best,,,,, then look at the end of the day if all your work can be returned if you wish as an investment ,,,, looking forward to your final video and the completion, that I most admire,,,, Cheers for now,,,, Peter

    Juste one concern about fire regulation and security, that horizontal piece of wood against the chimney need to be at a minimum distance of the inner side of the brick wall equal to 18 cms . Check out french regulation about roofing against chimney.

    Just a little advice before you finish the roof. You might want to hire a mason to fix and repoint the chimney on the roof side of the chimneys. If you put the plywood on you won’t be able to get to certain parts of the chimneys and some stone work.
