  • How to replace the wear ring on a Sea Doo jet pump that has seen its share of salt water. The jet pump on this Sea Doo SPX was very oxidized. In this video I show you how to remove massive oxidation, replace the wear ring, change the jet pump oil, and remove the jet pump from the Sea Doo. The jet pump was stuck to the jet ski. Thanks to a few buddies who stopped by to help pull it off.

    Thanks for all your videos Steve. I went to an Auction about a month ago and bid on a shipping container lot. You don't get to go through these things prior to bidding so never any telling what you get... This one was the best ever, it had three Sea Doos buried in the back, 2-99 GTX RFI's and a 96 XP. I have been reworking cleaning replacing seat covers and getting them operational ever since and have watched ALL of your videos and have , sucessfully-ish, so far appliied all your fixes. I have the gtx's running and am on the XP you are a wealth of knowledge and I really appreciate your videos.
    Thanks and keep them coming

    Decent Hillbilly engineering to get the thing apart, but I see two areas that could really cause someone grief.
    1st- if you need a breaker bar to undo a bolt, DON’T use an open end wrench! That is a surefire way to strip the bolt head, now you really have a PITA. Use a socket, preferably a 6 point, the bolt will snap before you ever strip the head.
    2nd- the little plug where you add gear oil to the cone. Make sure you coat the threads with a thread sealant, else you will end up with water in the oil. Mention to only screw the plug til it’s flush, it will continue to screw, without resistance, until it goes right into the cone.
    Good idea to freeze the wear ring. We used to freeze the sleeve, & put the cylinder in the oven at 350F when rebuilding Rotax engines for Can Am motorcycles. You have to be organized as you only have a few seconds to drop things into the proper place.
    I would place the wood block across the wear ring right from the start when seating the wear ring. If you start with just a hammer it is very easy to get it a little off square. The it’s a bitch, or you wreck the new part.

    RPM is through the roof and ski can’t get out of its own way...if I gradually add throttle it will eventually get on plane. Would a bad wear ring cause such an issue? From what I’m reading everyone says my issue is cavitation. I’ll be using your video this weekend if so!

      Sound like you nailed it. Some sea grass or fishing line wrapped up in the impeller will case those problems too but it’s easy to inspect on a trailer. Good luck!

  • @bobreichel

    Just wondering how tight the impeller was to the wear-ring. I bought a wear-ring on eBay and I'm seeing a 0.039 gap between the impeller and wear-ring. The wall thickness for the wear-ring was 0.275 the wall thickness for the old ring was 0.275 as well. I understand the gap is supposed to be between 0 -.15 thousands with new install, which means the wall thickness should be somewhere between .024 to .039 thicker or my impeller is worn. not sure which.

    I replaced the wear ring and impeller on a 2012 Seadoo Challenger 180 SP, only to discover I still have a cavitation problem. My boat is over revving and I have lost a lot of top end speed. I now understand that the third culprit in cavitation is air infiltration and that is caused by a bad carbon seal and boot. I must now take the pump back off and change those. Do you have any video's on that procedure or have you seen any?

    Got the same ski as you and have had problems when accelerating, the engine revs high but I don’t immediately go. It slowly picks up speed so I’m guessing wear ring? If you could let me know what that sounds like that would be great!

    • @StevenVigus
      @StevenVigus  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep. I would start by looking at the impeller section. Grass wrapped around the impeller can cause cavitation and loss of power. So can a bent impeller or badly worn wear ring. If this condition came on suddenly you might just have something stuck in the impeller. If you can get it out of the water check the intake grate as well. Where I live I'm routinely sucking up some seagrass.

    • @loganl5027
      @loganl5027 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pulled the pump off today and wear wrong looked the same and if not worse than yours, but impeller looks fine. Ordered a new wear ring and going to put that in once it arrives. Quick question. Is there a seal between the pump and where it bolts onto the ski? In the video it’s hard to tell when ur bolting it all back up if there is a deal that needs to be replaced there. Asking because when I removed the pump, there was a sort of ring of what looked to be a old seal that I could just pick off by hand. Anyways thanks for the help.

    • @StevenVigus
      @StevenVigus  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes there's a neoprene seal that goes there. Good luck with the rebuild. Hope yours isn't as crusty as mine was!

      @loganl5027 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry to bother you but I’ve got One last question. My impeller shaft is stuck in the impeller just as yours was. What’s the best way to get that out with out bending the shaft. It’s just pressed fitted in right? No bolts need to be undone? Thanks again for all the help I’m trying to avoid going to the mechanic and this stuff interests me.

    • @StevenVigus
      @StevenVigus  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No worries. Yes, it's a straight spline. No bolts or clip rings. I recommend some PB Blaster or other thin penetrating oil to free it up, maybe even multiple applications over a couple of days. Some people will tell you to use a torch to loosen things up. Maybe that would work but I just soak it with oil and pound on it. In the video you see that I rigged up something to pound in the desired direction of travel but you should be able to loosen things up by hammering down on the shaft (toward the pump) as well. There's a small rubber bumper on the end of the shaft that keeps it from rattling (when it's not rusted solid). This should allow it to move forward when you whack it. Obviously you will want to protect the cone or just remove it so it doesn't get damaged by this barbaric process. BTW, if you do remove the cone, be prepared to catch the cone oil so it doesn't get all over the place. That stuff smells nasty, even when it's brand new. Let us know how it goes.

    Word of caution - after watching barely 30 seconds, I noticed a critical error: You should remove the steering cable from the directional nozzle BEFORE removing the nozzle. It doesn't take much force to bend the control rod and then it will never work right again. The forces from steering will bend it more and more as you ride.
    I know this from experience with my Doo when a rock got sucked up and caught between the impeller and the nozzle. Ended up buying a new cable as a result of the mistake.

      No. You supposed to change it every season, but it should not need topping up. It only takes a few ounces, & is sealed by an O ring at the base of the cone, & the little plug where he filled it. The plug should have a thread sealer applied to prevent water ingress.

      If you are talking about the surface between the hull and the jet pump, yes. You can buy a seal with adhesive on one side that sticks to the hull. The wear ring itself just presses into the pump and there’s a small lip one one end that presumably improves the fit for best water flow to avoid cavitation.

      The white one does around 45 MPH, the yellow one about 5-7 MPH faster. For me it's about the handling, particularly since these little machines guzzle gas at wide open throttle. You can go plenty fast on an old two-smoke. Maybe not as fast as a modern, 1000+ pound ski but for the price you can't beat the fun!

    Also how can u tell if wear ring is bad or not? Could you tell while riding?? Just trying to figure out my issue. Thanks

    • @StevenVigus
      @StevenVigus  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Measure clearance between the outside edge of the impeller and the wear ring. Spec is .04MM or .016 inches. When you are riding you will give it gas and the engine will rev up but the ski won't take off quickly. If it's really bad you will be hammering the gas and the ski barely moves in the water. Other things can cause this problem like a damaged impeller or grass in the intake grate. If you climb up inder the ski and find that the impeller's not dinged or bent and there's nothing in the intake and nothing wrapped around the ipeller (like fishing line), then check the blade to ring clearance with a feeler gage. As you saw in the "solved: jet ski wont start" video, it's possible to have a catastrophic failure of the wear ring where chunks fly out through the nozzle.

    Hey Steve sorry to bring up a new comment on an old video. I love your vids you and your neighbor are hilarious. Question: Did you replace all the bearings and all the seals as well with the wear ring and a new shaft also or just the ring? Mine is doing the same thing spitting plastic and just curious if all that HAS to be done. What actually caused the bad wear ring on yours?
    Thanks

    • @StevenVigus
      @StevenVigus  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pretty sure that the aluminum sleeve corroded, swelling and pushing the already brittle wear ing into the impeller. When I bought this ski it had been sitting on a boat lift for a couple of years. I did buy a bearing kit but didn't end up installing it because it seemed to turn fine. Yes on the new shaft seal. Let me know how it goes.

    Next time try putting the rotorhousing in the refrigorator for a hour or 3 then the ring pops out really easy
    Then heat up the housing and put the new frozen ring in the housing
    Greetings from the netherlands
    No need to force it guys 😂👍🏻

    • @StevenVigus
      @StevenVigus  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the pointers. I did use the freezer trick for installation but the ring was in backward and the forward lip interfered with the rear surface. After whacking it a few times I fugured it out and turned it around. Don't remember trying the freezer trick for removal or not. The housing was very corroded behind the ring but chilling it down to reduce the diameter might have helped. I'll try it next time and suggest that viewers give it a shot. We're learning together here.

    great video, I have a 94 SPX and I'm going to do the same thing for the graphics, except my hull and bumpers are teal, can they be painted?

    • @StevenVigus
      @StevenVigus  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The SPX is so much fun! You can certainly paint the bumper and rub rails with automotive bumper paint but it's going to get destroyed every time you dock it. I would probably just learn to love the original color. That teal hull might look good with arctic camo on top. Just tell everybody that the color is ice blue.

    not broke,but very worn steve. my manual trim.

    • @StevenVigus
      @StevenVigus  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      If the button still activates the motor then the relay is good. You can replace the motor with an electric window motor from a 1986 Nissan. Check out a couple of Nissan vehicles around that year and you will recognize the motor. The connector has to be cut off and direct wired but the motor is an exact match. You used to be able to get a used one for around $20 on ebay. I haven't bought one in probably 10 years so all bets are off. If you do go for the repair, be sure to replace the rubber boot on the outside of the hull. They get crunchy when they get old and you will likely destroy an old one during the replacement anyway. If it tears, the servo housing fills with water and both your motor and relay are toast. Good luck!

    great video man. at the end are you putting a bead of silicone on the housing surface? Also, did you use any thread sealant on the jet pump cone screw?

    • @StevenVigus
      @StevenVigus  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks. Yes, I use a general purpose silicone sealant around where the vacuum bilge lines go through the transome. Each line has an o-ring but I generally add some sealant in the general area as well. I have pulled jet pumps that had only the o-rings and the large gasket; seems to work fine that way but I just feel better knowing that there's some sealant in that area in case I screw up the alignment and knock an o-ring out of position during assembly. I apply blue Loctite to the screws that hold the jet pump cone cone on. I don't use anything on the o-ring that seals the cone. Good luck on your project!

Thanks for asking since it gives me a chance to show them some more love. Not sure if you will find most of the music that I use in Shazam - I use it under a subscriber license vice the Creative Commons music that a lot of You Tubers use. @StevenVigus  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good luck with that. Dont' be afraid to pull that bad boy off with a vehicle if you have to. Just consider where the pump is going to fly when it comes loose. The first time I did it, I tied the rope to my truck and roped the ski to a tree. The pump almost hit my tailgate. If you have it on a trailer you can hook the trailer up to a vehicle and tie the pump off to a tree. A much better setup. It's good, clean, fun for the neighbors to get together and watch. Add in the chance of damaging something and it's even more exciting!
