Aretosophy is the Wisdom of Ethical Excellence
Excellence or Ethics?
The study of human excellence is a core concept of modern coaching -
yet many people tend to believe, that in order to achieve personal success one needs to have sharp elbows and that you cannot have both personal excellence and high ethics.
My approach is to show that unlike this believe, on the highest level of peak performance Ethics and Excellence are both one.
The ancient Greek philosophers and the wise men of olden times knew that and it is illustrated in the allegorical parable of “The Choice of Heracles (Hercules)”.
Also known as “Hercules / Heracles at the Crossroads”
when young Hercules meets Vice and Virtue at the Crossroads, Vice offers pleasure without work, but Virtue inspires Hercules to earn his glory and it is this choice that made him become the greatest of the Greek heroes.
The Greek name of Virtue is Arete.
Hercules chose the path of Arete (Virtue) and became the greatest of the Greek heroes.
But it is not only the case in ancient mythology and philosophy, even in modern scientific experiments in the field of Game theory, which is really the study of successful strategies, there are many experiments in which the honest player always gains a huge advantage over the dishonest player.
The honest player gains a huge advantage.
Many systems of thought have a philosophy and a set of ethics, which are often unfortunately completely ignored in the process,
Yet ethics should not just be an “optional addition”, but an integrated part of the entire process - inseparable from the core principles of successful performance.
