The San Jose Sharks Bring Back Playoff Hero Barlcay Goodrow And Trade For Ty Dellandrea

  • The San Jose Sharks made several moves as the National Hockey League got a jump on the offseason. Start with the Sharks claiming playoff hero Barclay Goodrow from the New York Rangers. Start with why this move is head-scratching from the Sharks' perspective, as they already have a player in the same vein in Luke Kunin, why Goodrow doesn't help Macklin Celebrini and Will Smith, and whether Goodrow even wants to be in San Jose. Next, the Sharks traded for Ty Dellandrea from the Dallas Stars for a mid-round pick; what are they getting in Dellandrea, and why the cost was negligible? Finally, the Sharks have been reportedly kicking the tires on Cam Atkinson from the Philadelphia Flyers, but Atkinson does not want to go to San Jose. Why the Sharks should be looking for these types of deals.

Goodrow here not to play with Celebrini and Smith on same line, he is here to protect/watch kids. Goodrow not afraid to fight and Sharks really needs this kind of player around younger players.

I feel you, but in that case I’d want a domi ideally, e Kane, Wilson ilk. Skill and toughness needed. When playing helps the youth. When someone gets outs of line. Steps in to detour further issues. Not a next shift, or next your on ice player in the bottom 6. Also doesn’t tip the scales putting you ahead of where you actually are.

Hi JD. Barcley Goodrow scored just 6 Goals in the Pkayoffs and he is right in his prime. He just has a bad contract and thats all. He is a fourtliner and an exellent penalty killer. A guy where young kids can look up to how much work it takes to be an NHLer. He will not play on a line with Celebrini or Smith. I don't get why this is a bad move. About every NHL Team would love to have him just not with that contract. I have to diagree with you on that. Love to hear your episodes in morning.

(Dellandrea) I like this pickup. It reminds me of Zadina and Kostin last year. Dellandrea knows what he is and plays like it. He is young and can develop into something better but should end up a good third line forward. He is the type of player you need on a winning team. Everything I have read of him and the videos I have watched tell me the Dallas Stars fans would have rather he stayed. He is a rink rat and a great teammate. He was a captain of his OHL team. Worked his way up and earned his minutes. Last year Dallas acquired some veterans and had other more talented prospects surpass him in the depth chart. But, when given the opportunity and minutes in 2022-2023 he put up good numbers for a third line forward. I think he slot into the third line. This could be bad news for Bords as he was a third line staple by the end of the season (maybe being moved?) and I think it also points to Graf going to the Cuda for more seasoning. His age is good because if he improves a bit he could be with the Sharks when they get better. Depth is key and he is depth. We need guys at his development stage to add to what we have. he has played over 150 games so is an NHLer which we need at a low cost high reward pickup. We have a lot of guys not ready just yet, in the minors and just coming in to the team as rookies. He fits in timeline with Zetterlund, Kostin and Eklund. So he adds to that mix of players. I think he will be like Kostin and find a home on the third line.

I don't mind the Goodrow move, but the only thing I don't like is that 3rd year. I don't mind trying to make the penalty kill a strength. With Goodrow and hopefully Couture coming back you will now have a stable of dudes to choose from for the PK. Nothing could be worse for a younger team than giving up a goal or two a night on the power play. For years back when the Sharks were first starting to build something under Daryl Sutter, it was the penalty kill that gave them a chance every night. Because the Sharks always had an iffy Power Play back then. Not a great move though, by Mike. I hope there's some future unknown, beneath the surface, considerations for this gift to the Rangers.......😂

Let's hit this one at a time. (Goodrow)
This is perplexing but not the doomsday scenario you have made it out to be. Here are some points that I think are relevant:
    1) The contract is no longer than GMMG would have signed other free agents for. The amount for Goodrow is way too much. It is more than he is currently worth but we have tons of space so the amount does not really matter (I agree with you there). As to its length. It fits with when we will need to start paying some of the current Sharks, so it comes off the books when we need it to. Also, if he gets waived and sent to the minors the contract cost changes.
    2) As andruk noted, he will not be playing top six minutes, and to be honest neither should Celebrini or Smith unless they earn it. So, no he will more than likely not be playing with those two. If he does, this would mean they are playing in the fourth line. Not happening. So, I expect him to be playing fourth line minutes but could get some time in the third line due to injuries. I would also not be surprised if he gets waived and sent to the Cuda. He is a depth forward only on an expensive contract the Sharks can afford.
    3) As to him not wanting to be traded to the Sharks. You do not know that. You are reading reports and listening to rumors. Maybe wait until you hear from Goodrow and GMMG maybe? You listened to rumors about Sturm and Coots. Both turned out to be wrong so how about waiting before jumping to conclusions on who thinks what until you hear it from them.
    4) Why make this move? I am not sure either but we all questioned (me included) why GMMG took what he did for Timo and look how that ended up. I think GMMG has earned some trust from us fans with the moves he has made and how he is a big part of turning the franchise around. I am hoping this is a part of a larger move or that the NYR GM now owes us one. This could pay off sometime down the road and sooner that we all are thinking.
    5) Goodrow is an excellent character guy. Tough and I think has more left in the tank. Yes, his point totals went down but so did his offensive starts. he went from the 40s to the 20s. This was the second lowest on the NYR. The reason is something we do not know but with more offensive zone starts and ice time his point totals should go up. With his intangibles I think as a fourth line depth forward he will be ok.
    6) Kunin replacement? Might be. You acted in your podcast as though Kunin is signed. He is not. In fact he is an RFA so there is no guarantee he is coming back but with what they have stated I think they will. I suspect third line minutes from Kunin. Goodrow is fourth line, which we did not have a lot of last year Reference Carpenter and Bailey, among others).
    7) Depth killed is last year. When we sustained injuries we had no players that we could call up in a pinch that should have been called up. I wreaked havoc on the Sharks and the Cuda. We had no real NHL players to call up. Bailey and Carpenter filled in admirably but should never have had no. We had no depth. Goodrow adds the depth we needed last year.
    8) Who care if GMMG helped the NYR out? They are an Eastern Conference team that we play a couple times a year. We are not expected or should make the playoffs so what is the consternation about that? The GM of the NYR is a close friend of GMMG and as long as they both remain GMs he will hopefully return the favor when we need it. Either this year or so. It is always good to have those chips in your pocket it you need them. Maybe helping to facilitate a trade for someone you want?
In the end we got a depth forward with a contract double what he is worth that creates a deeper roster of NHL talent who is high character and experienced for a team that will be filled with a lot of young forwards that need to learn how to play the right way. It helps to ensure that they are not dipping into the Cuda where those players are needed to help continue the develop of our prospects down there.

Maybe a deal with the Rangers is forthcoming where you trade Ferraro, (2 years left at 3.25mil) for Trouba, (2 years left at 8mil) and they add in Kako, (1 year left at 2.4mil) & either their first this year, (#30) or their 2025 first? There has to be some under-the-table deal between GMs otherwise the waiver claim makes no sense.

As to the last topic. It should not surprise anyone that free agents will choose not to come here. Especially the tier 1 free agents and players looking for one last run at the cup. Atkinson is not a player I would want them to get anyways. We will have to pay more than we should to get the types of players we want.
My hope is we get a second/third line tweener center/wing. I think we need one in case Coots can't go and because we do not have six top six players. We can say we have the makings of a good second line but first line players? Nope. In center our best is Granny and Coots.
Celebrini will be good but he is a rookie and should be playing third line minutes until he has earned playing time on a higher line (assuming he turns pro). The same with Will Smith. On wing our best is Eklund and Zetterlund. Both ok or good second liners but that is about it. So, getting the second/third line center/wing helps fill a void in our lineup. Then, for the last wing spot we can rotate players until someone takes the spot and holds onto it.
If all goes as planned the two rookies play higher in the lineup as the season goes on and the have earned it but they are 18 and 19. Let's not get ahead of ourselves. They will have to earn their minutes before sniffing a top six spot.
The future is bright but it is a bumpy road ahead. Fasten your seatbelts, 2024-2025 is going to be a bumpy ride but a fun one.

    Couple thoughts.
Goodrow deal not done. I’d expect a second trade coming with more value to the sharks. Otherwise not a smart move. I’ve heard a possible second move is in the cards. Me or a not needed player for a 2nd. I’m ok with move. Spot and cap holder + a 2nd.
Don’t expect big name players in free agency. 2 spots already filled today. That’s good imo. Maybe one or two targeted players. But id expect the skill level of a domi. Second line skill at most brought in.
Grier has said he doesn’t want to skip steps. Hopefully he sticks to plan. Skipping steps would be to overdue good free agents pushing you more to bottom 10 then bottom 5. That would really hurt the sharks. I hope we target a player like max domi ilk. Has skill but also that protection player. Anyone touches Mack or will. Domi down to step in. Can also help with some skill, but not enough to tip the scales.
Smart still taking shots on reclamation/new scenery moves. I wouldn’t mind a couple more. Especially on the D end.
I’m on board for looking to flip Ferraro at this draft for a late first or early second. If need to add a sweetener to get, I’m down. Ferraro and a 5th/6th or 7th. Anything later then top 40 pick. Just keep ferraro. Replace temporary in free agency with around a rutta skill level, short cheapish contact. Same with kunin, if you can get a mid/late 2nd or a 3rd this or next year.
Please tell me whoever was in the ear for gaudrea, baupit, emond. Is long gone. Please be miller and someone new providing the intel for our next goalie picks.

Great on PK as you said, great fore checker, and he is a great player on a shut down line. Another thing, excellent in the locker room and getting guys going. Every team needs that. I think you're a bit harsh on him, though I do think the salary is more in the 2 million range. As well, I do think it sucks for him, if in fact, San Jose was on his no trade list. And if I recall correctly, most of us myself included weren’t very big on Granlund. Bad numbers in PIT and looks like a waste of cap space, yet look how valuable he was last year.

You can never have enough Kunin & Goodrow type players on a rebuilding team. Goodrow played almost every game on the team that won the President's trophy. He has won two Stanley Cups. It's wild to say this move doesn't help Smith or Celebrini. He was an undrafted player who grew up in the Sharks system and has worked for everything in his career. He has heart and character, which the Sharks severely lacked this past year. He will be a mentor and a great leader a la the "A" on his sweater on a stacked NYR team. We can't all sit here and say the Shark should have got a pick etc as we were not in on those negotiations. Maybe the Sharks were not Goodrow's first choice, but this is a business and he would not have signed here had he gone unclaimed on waivers and was free to sign anywhere. The Sharks have plenty of cap space and need to hit the floor. This is a business, and the Sharks gave Goodrow his shot in the league, in the NHL you reciprocate and remember those things; just like potentially this handshake agreement Grier and Drury had prior to him being put on waivers. We never know what else may come around. Free agents will not be dying to come here, and a short-term commitment many proven hockey minds love this move for the Sharks.

I don’t see how we lacked character last year. We look past the vets we already have because of outcome. But if you look closely, you had all the vets you need.
For vets, we had a past top pair defenseman in vlassic. Had a top line forward in granlund. Had 4 former/still top 6 players in duclair, barabanov, Hoffman, lebanc. Those hard working players in carpenter, Bailey, rutta.
Don’t get me wrong in this sharks time frame. Sharks need vets. How they did this year was perfect. For most part, good vets who helped eklund and zetterlund, etc. but also did very little to tip scales to sharks wins. That’s what we need to be looking for again this year.

What makes you think they are trying to win right now? They aren't winning any games for a few years regardless of who they throw on the ice. Young players can still develop on a team not winning games, winning doesn't necessarily equate to having skilled players. You rang off a few current Sharks players that are veterans and have won.. what have they done or contributed to the organization? So what's wrong with adding another vet who might have a stronger impact? Goodrow isn't there to teach these guys how to do tight turns, stop and start, or how to shoot the puck. I can guarantee that guy has a higher hockey IQ than Kunin and most on the current roster. That's what young players need, they cant win just on their skill. Corey Perry, yes a different style of play, is a great example. His skill set is not even close to where it used to be but that guys knows how to be in the right spot at he right time. You don't play in 4 Finals in the last 5-6 years on accident. A guy who went from scoring goals to laying out to block shots. That's the mind set these guys need, if you aren't contributing on the scoresheet you need to find a way, put in the extra work and contribute in another way. I'd take a Bordeleau killing penalties effectively instead the one who avoids the corners.
