- The fight for the final spot on the men’s podium at the 2016 Reebok CrossFit Games came down to the last event. The crowd had to wait for the dust to settle before it knew which of Canada’s top male athletes-Brent Fikowski or Pat Vellner-would stand with Mat Fraser and Ben Smith at the medal ceremony.
The Canadian rivalry continued this season as Vellner and Fikowski went head-to-head in Open Workout 17.1 at Reebok CrossFit YUL in Quebec. In this behind-the-scenes look at the athletes’ preparations for the announcement, it’s clear that their rivalry is suffused with a healthy dose of camaraderie.
Follow Vellner and Fikowski as they go about their daily activities: training, preparing meals, pursuing their careers and training some more. See them at their best, worst and weirdest.
And don’t miss the special punishment for the loser of the 17.1 showdown.

Really glad to see CF spotlight a couple guys who do something more than live in a gym all day. It's encouraging to see a full time employee and student who compete at the highest levels
Tyler Theune probably the most accurate representation of crossfit. Not everyone has the money to own a gym or do this full time.

I was subbed to the CrossFit Journal for three months, In that time I saw only TWO videos uploaded. Other than these few and far between videos we see that arent available on youtube the Journal is NOT worth it.

Vellner & Fikowski could not be more different. Vellner is free spirited and goes with the flow and Fikowski is so strict and regimented. I guess I know which one works now. lol
4 Years later, these boys are still sitting on the Podium!

Btw I died laughing: Fikowski is like waking up with the roosters, training like goddamn Batman, eating clean as most people never will, and Vellner is like 3 sets of squats, 3 sets of shoulder press, a lil bit of baseball and third place in the world. :D :D :D Better engine no matter what you do I guess (Fraser fans will disagree but whatever).

Some of these elite athletes live rather normal lives - school, work, etc.
In my opinion being able to be this good and hold down a job, is more impressive than someone like Mat Fraser who literally does nothing but train...or Rich Froning...

Fraser was a full time student in his first 2 years. Rich was a student did and then did coaching and now runs an affiliate. They are jobs too
B B Yes it's impressive to see them do so well. I wouldn't say more so than Fraser though. Look at their performances at the Games. Fraser, who put in more work than either of them, dominated by nearly 200 points in 2016 and over 200 in 2017.
Yes, they're impressive, but they'll NEVER be as good as Fraser unless they throw their lives into it.
I completely agree. It’s kind of encouraging to see that I can go to school and still train and be relatively good at CrossFit. (Not that good though.😂)

Where is that Froning, Fraser 15.5 video??? Tried looking it up can't find it anywhere.....
Fraser and Froning did 15.1 and 16.5 (with Ben) together. 15.5 was Briggs, Leblanc-Bazinet and Thorisdottir.
I know not the announcements, the behind the scene video titled Froning, Fraser 15.5. Google it, it pops up but doesn't play anymore. Goodluck this year, the video was awesome!

Theo his regional is June 2nd-4th for Canada West. Canada East is the first weekend of regionals which is May 19th- 21st. 3 weekends for the whole world. But yeah none of them for 2017 have started yet.
