How fun. I might just try this with my kiddo. He'll be starting school this fall, but how fun would it be for him to grow his own tree. Also, I'll use a clear container for both soil and water. Love seeing those roots
I’m growing 4 right now. The original one has 4 roots as of right now and the rest have one. Just transferred one from the paper towel into a water jar. For now they will stay in there until I can get the right potting mix! Thank you for the help
When growing an avocado seed, should it first be germinated in water, then transplanted to soil??? My avocado seed rooted in water is now 7" tall with 5 small leaves. Another stem is 1" high. I suspect its time to cut it at the node. However, should it be transplanted first then pruned or vice versa?
Hi Scott! I discovered your channel about a month after you uploaded the video of the hypothesis and I asked if I could still participate, you said yes and the next day I started the experiment. Unfortunately, my avocados didn't grow the five centimeters before the end date of the experiment. But I share my results. Until just a week ago, my avocado seed in soil reached five centimeters. And my avocado seed in water, it's barely two centimeters high. My results are the same with your hypothesis and the results obtained. note: use common soil with compost. I'll be ready for the next experiment!!
Thanks for sharing your results here, Berenice - it’s certainly consistent with what we found! Thanks participating ☺️ I’d love you to join for our next one… whenever we run it! 🥑
I’m sure you’ve covered it but I’m doing three in water after germinating under the sink. After about 4 months and pruning all are about a foot tall now. One seed has turned black and shriveled. Plant still looks ok still. Chuck that one or…?
Hey Scott, quick question, how long does it take on average for an avocado tree to start growing after pruning, I've pruned 3 of my 30cm ones like 10 days ago
I noticed this was about a few weeks ago so I came to ask, is there any other sort of mix I could use instead of peat moss with perlite and cheap soil mixture for my avocado plant? Because we don’t have it over here as much so it’s kinda hard to get. 😅
Currently running my own little experiment that's very niche. Do Cosmic Crisp apple seeds germinate more consistently in straight perlite than potting mix. Teeny tiny sample size of 5 control and 5 experiment and yeah. Cosmic Crisp seeds do in fact seem to be germinating more in straight perlite.
Hi Scott! I always enjoy watching your videos, they are always so informative! And this one really surprised me! I was always under the impression that it was better to germinate the avocado seeds in water but the results of this experiment proved otherwise! I have some seeds germinating in water now... and even though I also like to see the roots develop in water, I think I'll plant them in soil to see what happens! Thank again for a great video! PS : Count me in for the next international expriment! 🌿🙂
If anyone sees this please help me out! I grew mine in water for about 7 months now and I want to put it in soil, how? The roots have grown quite a lot and I'm really confused, do I trim them? Do I leave them fully in the soil?
I wonder if there is any difference between using toothpicks for the water vs using one of those avocado seed floats. Also what might happen if the seeds placed in soil have toothpicks placed in them before being put in soil.
I filled out the form but I was an anomaly - the only way I've ever gotten avocado seeds to germinate/sprout was to wrap them in a wet paper towel, put in a ziploc bag, and toss in a dark corner for a few months. My first one was a twin - two growing out of the same seed. I just pruned him (yes, I think it's a him LOL) like Scott suggested (I carefully watched the video), now the poor things are leafless. I do have a second one that just came out of the baggy and is in soil now ... just waiting for growth. The other two still in the baggies need to come out to soil soon (was just waiting for roots to grow more). I doubt I'll ever see an avocado with any of them, but the process is fun!
If I’m honest - I’ve never had much luck with the water and toothpick method myself. My big batch I’m following in the avocado diaries videos were germinated in a fish tank, which is much warmer 😅 otherwise, for me it’s a zip lock bag or straight in soil. I hope your tree pushes out new leaves soon 🤞🏻
Does anyone here know when and how I should plant an avocado seed after it has sprouted from being in water, the root is very long and I’m not sure if I should coil it around a pot or get one as long as the length of the root
I find that growing them in soil works better and quicker. My trees are 4ft tall now :)
Do you have a well drained soil pot. As I find leaves tend to fall down instead of perk up.

That sounds like a wonderful project to do together! All the best 🪴🥑

Very interesting & informative. I'm just getting ready to attempt to grow an Avocado from a pit, so really appreciate the info.
Now that I’ve seen this video I get it!! I’ll def participate in the next international experiment.
Wonderful!
Idk i had a bit of trouble growing avocados in water bottle but when i just wrapped a avocado with wet water and a ziplock bag grew roots in a week

My control still hasn’t grown 5 cm. It’s growing all weird like a flower! I’ll have to send it to you on IG. The roots are crazy though.

@@ScottGrowsanAvocadoTree definitely!! I'll be waiting for another experiment!! thanks Scott 🙌

I have the same question. I pruned mine 2 weeks ago. Nothing so far. I read it takes up to a month.
@@0xeb- 15 days later the highest 2 nodes on each avocado show signs of growing, the growing parts look exactly like the stem in the beginning
@@ivailokindjakov I will reach the 2 weeks mark and I am not seeing much progress. I will stay hopeful. That plant was striving but only vertically.

This is a great question! Perhaps one to investigate in the future 🥑

@@ScottGrowsanAvocadoTree Me too. The twins look funny as just green stalks. hehe But it's a healthy green so that's something.
Really cool!
I started off growing my seed in water until rooted, peeled seed, and stem started. Then I moved it to dirty and lots of sun in the afternoon..

Great experiment! Thx! Why is growing avocado trees so addictive?
Because it’s so easy. I can’t stop either! Now I have a pineapple going too 😫 science is fun!
Love ❤
I have an avocado seed with about 8-9 sprouts. Help!
Hi Scott, I love your videos. I just wanted to say that isn't Columbia, it's Colombia.
OH MY GOSH I AM SO SORRY 😭
that’s super embarrassing. I’ll do better in the future.
hey i enjoy your videos
Ive grown them in both.water and soil
Any advice on moving to soil an avocado seed that has been growing in water
I sure do! th-cam.com/video/7zSIHjcw9ZA/w-d-xo.html
We need a new experience now ! 😅
