Avocados don't grow true from seeds, so before you waste your time with 20 seedlings that will likely give you a horrible fruit tree, go down to a nursery and get yourself a grafted one instead. You'll get lots of fruit you actually want in 3 to 4 years instead of fruit you don't want in low quantities in 8 to 10.

How much light does an avocado need? I have a really cool avocado, and by cool I mean it was sitting near a window that had slipped open durring the winter and this plant grew up to that window crack and was leafing there in zero degree weather. And by zero I mean Fehernheight zero! The top of the plant at least was unaffected by the cold.
Sounds interesting!! Pretty unusual for it to germinate in such extreme temperatures - it wants to live!! Avocado trees are a _little_ fussy when it comes to light. If kept indoors - give it as much sun as possible. Sit it in a bright window. If kept outdoors, too much direct sun can cause the leaves and new bark to be scolded. Let it get a few hours of direct sun per day, then filtered light for the rest of it - especially when the trees are young. Good luck!

Hi there! My new soil mix is the same ratio as this - I just replace the peat moss with coconut peat (after it’s expanded in water). So, as you say, already hydrated. Though I’m also tending to go a little heavier with the perlite. Perhaps it’s time for an updated video!
What kind of avo trees do you have? I have a bacon and looking to buy some scions for other varieties. I have several seedlings too grown from a few types of avo seeds like hass, Shepard, gem and feurte. I can’t wait to see what they turn into one day lol if I live that long. But I will be using them for grafting too so that’s why I want the scions 😊
Hi Scott , My seed , sprouted in water . The seedling is a couple of inches tall . Can I plant it in soil already and if so how do I go about that ? Does the seed get buried completely or should the seed be exposed slightly like half in half out ?? .. please clarify
Hi Scott, I use coconut coir instead of peat moss as it's more environmentally sustainable in my area. Is this OK? Also can I add sand as its more native to my area (Dubai/Oman).
Alright i think ive found the perfect mix, take cup for mesure (0.5 liter was mine), 1 cup sand (all purpuse sand, just standard sand) - 1.5 cup perlite - 2 cups citrus soil mix - 1 cup treset (not the best solution beucase it has wooden chips inside, just use peat moss if you can get it, i couldnt). This is what i used but its based on 1 cup sand, 1 cup pumice, 0.5 cup perlite and 1.5 cup pet moss. Here in eastern europe its impossible to get peat moss or pumice, people just dont know what that is here so use the first mix i made if you cant buy that, if you can, use the other one with pumice in it. Both citrus soil and treset have acidic ph and drain really well and sand makes it more of a mineral soil along side perlite which avocados love i think.
My avacado seed split and is showed root and stem growth but it stopped and it still in water but what I can't understand what is happening water become opaque and smell of ammonia I change water daily
I’m so getting myself a moisture meter. Thanks mate that will help a lot. I hate sticking my hands in the dirt due to my health issues I have severe immune issues and have to be careful with potting mixes and compost etc.
I got mine from Bunnings! I use it whenever I water anything now - it's probably the best tool I've bought for keeping plants. Take care when mixing soil - I know it's not easy or super safe for everyone - remember that PPE and look after yourself. Best wishes :)
I'm excited to see how well my avocado will grow for its 2nd year this summer :) mine definitely needs a bigger pot soon... It started growing in my compost so I planted it up... It got 1 light frost and died back but I took it in and it grew back this winter bigger with some extra light on it... It's doing OK I think we still have a spider mite issue but it will do better in a bigger pot this summer outside in the breeze
Where do you store your bags of soil, etc? Mine always seem to get buggy, and then I feel like I can’t use it anymore bc I don’t want bugs in my house.
Happy new year! Yes! I’m using coconut peat these days - a little more preparation (you need to soak it before using it) but super cheap and much more sustainable. I use it the same way I use peat moss in this video.
Good information thanks, just a pity you didn’t show the planting stage because some bury the seed in soil, some get a pre root level for the soil and others leave the top bit of the seed above soil level. So which do you think is right for a healthy avocado conversion from water to soil?
@@ScottGrowsanAvocadoTree Thankyou! Now I can put my beautiful avocado with 6 giant green leaves in soil. Spraying 3% H2O2 on the soil now and again keeps fungal infection at bay, can the plant deal with that?
I’m from Uk but lived in Dubai for a few years and our wonderful friend/ housekeeper Celia was from Philippines where avocados are “pig feed”. They just Chuck the stones in the dirt or the pigs excrete them and hey ho an avocado plant grows like a weed . She found it hilarious that we in the West had a problem growing what she saw as native plant and would pay so much to buy them.
That's a great question, Dawn - I'm going to have to try it out and report back my results. I don't often use self watering pots - I prefer to have water drain and soil dry out more often, but I'll have to give it a try.
Scott i'm freaking out! I don't know what to do i need your HELP!! The leaves on my avocado are turning pale green like a yellow green color. What should i do??
Feel free to send me an image on Instagram. There are a number of reasons they may be doing that, and to simplify it may be because the pH is too high (as I discussed in this video, avocado trees like slightly acidic soil). You can pick up soil pH test kits at any nursery or place that sells plants. It also could be due to low iron levels. Hopefully we can get to the bottom of this!
Thanks scott for the info. Yea i'm upset because today the leaves are a bit droopy😢. My uncle is amazing with plants and thankfully he is driving down here tomorrow to check him out. Fingers crossed we can save my first avocado tree. Thanks for replying i really appreciate. I would've loved to send you a picture but i'm not much of a social media person just TH-cam
The key here is that it’s still easily draining. I haven’t been able to put any of mine in the ground yet, as I am renting, so I’m out of my area of expertise because I dint yet have the experience - but I’d be preparing the soil over time with plenty of organic matter. Adding organic matter like leaf litter and manure can raise the acidity level too - but you can also add other commercially available chemicals to raise it.
Scott Grows an Avocado Tree okay, I know you said it’s out of your expertise but do you happen to know how far apart you can plant another fruit tree like a dwarf lemon tree? I know that from avocados to avocado it’s 15ft minimum but what if you plant a dwarf tree like 7ft apart from the avocado tree? Is that okay?
Scott I grew an avocado from seed it is about 1.5yrs old, it seems to be struggling so much in winter. The leaves are going orange/brown. I replanted in better draining soil thinking this was root rot. It is still trying to sprout new small leaves from the top but I can see already those tips are browning also 😢 Any ideas? Does it just hate the cold and should I bring it inside through winter?? I am in Perth
Do you have any updates yet on those forgotten avo seeds lol. 6 months wow they are troopers that’s for sure. Hope they are growing well. This comment was started on your forgotten seeds video but it has skipped to next video in playlist lol
Not yet! They haven't done much yet, either... I planted them at the end of autumn/start of winter, so I suppose that was to be expected 😅 Thanks for watching and commenting :)
Hi Vanessa! I used Perlite, Peat Moss and Potting Soil. My moisture meter I bought from Bunnings, as well as the other ingredients, but if you don’t have them in your country, they should be found in garden supply shops and nurseries. All the best!!
hi scott, I have an avocado plant that is about 2 years old and it has a really long stem with a few leaves on it and it is getting some new little leaves on it, should I just cut the stem and see if it will grow again, OR HOW CAN i RE-ROOT this plant again ????? thank-you
@@ScottGrowsanAvocadoTree Hi, Scott, thanx for getting back to me, I really do not know what to do with this plant, its pretty droopy and I might just throw it out....???
Hi Scott, have you ever used pummice (volcanic rock) as a soil additive to assist in moisture flow control and aeration of the soil? Was reading up about it and it sounds quite beneficial but don't know anyone that has used it as an addition to the soil.
Hi Scott! URGENT!! I’ve copied this soil recipe but I’m concerned it’s holding onto moisture for too long. How many days does it typically take for the meter to show ‘DRY’ after you watering it? Please get back to me ASAP! My plants have been 4-5 days moist.
I have a mexicola avocado in the ground. It is small, but putting out a lot of new growth. We just had a long rain... and I just noticed that 2 sections of the avocado’s new growth droopy. It was the top growth and the tip of a branch. Is this root rot? Should I replant it higher? Thanks!
Hmmm, it’s possible that it’s root rot - keep an eye on it. There are a handful of really helpful videos out there on planting an avocado tree in the ground - I’m currently just doing mine in containers because I’m renting. Many suggest planting them in slight mounds so as to enhance drainage.
Hi Scott, my avocado tree leafs have brown spots on them and it’s spreading to many of the leafs. There falling prematurely and the branches are drooping. Please help
Thank you!! It sounds like root rot 😬 make sure you’re only watering it when it’s dry. Good luck! It’s hard to rescue a tree from root rot once it’s set in but it is doable!
Thanks for sharing this! I've got quite a few avocado seeds to plant now so definitely useful to know the perfect soil recipe. I have some coco coir ( I think is coco peat), wondering if I use that to replace the normal pot soil portion in your mixture? Thank you.
Thanks for the kind words! I can't speak from experience regarding coco coir - but from what I understand, it's a good medium for raising seeds but lacks the macro nutrients to sustain long term growth. I wouldn't change it for the potting soil mix. But it's something I may experiment with someday!
@@ScottGrowsanAvocadoTree Thanks! I just planted one with coco coir mix, will feed some liquid fertilisers and see how it goes. Hope my experiment won't fail too soon.
Hi Scott, thank you very much for sharing these great tips and your experience! If I can give you an advice, it's better if you wear a mask when you move dry perlite, its dust can be dangerous ;)
hi scott, i just bought a haas and bacon in melbourne, they are about 5 feet tall and going to go into soil, but with lots of info on internet, not sure how to do it, will a raised garden bed of about 600mm height be any good with compost sand and native soil mix?
@@ScottGrowsanAvocadoTree hi scott, i bought these from Diacos lynbrook, and i think they have few more in stock if you are interested in buying from them
Great video, thank you Scott. So grateful to have found your channel. I've been breaking my head over what type of soil to use for the avocados. Also ........ Is it true that to get fruit there need to be a male and female tree?? ....... which will "hopefully" be cross pollinated by the friendly bees (if any come). I see fewer and fewer bees every year 😢😢 Blueberries like acidic soil.
That'll work but cut your perlite in half, especially if you're in a really hot climate. That will drain *too* well. So if it gets hot you'll constantly be watering. Also perlite isn't cheap, so you can cut your cost in half by using half of what you used there. You'll still have a super fluffy soil that holds moisture but won't rot your roots
The commercial nursery that I purchased my grafted avocado trees from published this recipe: 2 parts pumice stone gravel, 1.2 part clay gravel, 0.5 parts peat moss, 0.8 parts perlite, 2 parts composted bark. Perlite is great, but it is lightweight, so it will rise to the surface of your soil mix. Pumice stone is also a volcanic rock derivative, but it retains moisture and is heavier, so it will hold in place. You can use coco coir instead of peat moss to the same effect.
Hey Terry, I’d recommend improving the soil before planting. Adding organic matter (manure, leaf litter, mulch) and digging it in over time will help improve your soil both in nutrition and in drainage. Good luck!
Hey Gaurav - They'll really struggle. Once it hits 40C, most plants, including avocados, struggle to function effectively (for a number of reasons, including that photosynthesis stops working when the plant is 40C). If they're in the full sun, they'll also really struggle. It's possible that with adequate shading your trees may survive though.
Hi, I have several little saplings ( 2-3 inches ) in water and was looking for the right soil. Found you but was wondering if this mix was rich enough for the babies to grow. Would they benefit from worm castings or blood meal or fish meal? I have no clue but I want them to thrive. I was not aware that they don't produce the avocado they came from. Mine came from Hass avos. What kind of fruit will I get? Thank you.
thank you for this informative video, I'd like to ask what should I do if my avocado plant's seed is slowly rotting, not the root tho, its the seed and the growth of the plant has greatly slowed because of it. I have a batch of avocado seedlings that are germinated through hydroponics and seeing this video makes me anxious if putting a normal plot soil would rot my avocado plant root easily. Thank you for the pointers and I'd love to hear from you ^^
Hi! How long has your saplings been in water? Seeds do rot away, but in my experience it takes more than a year to start seeing it - it’s only once the energy reserves are totally depleted that the tree has no use and will allow it to rot. Whilst it is possible to keep trees alive hydroponically, it’s generally not advised - nutrition becomes an issue as well as roots and supports for the tree. If you use my mix in this video, I would expect your tree will be fine in soil :) all the best! 😃🥑
@@ScottGrowsanAvocadoTree that is a very good info, but I still doubt that it is already letting it to rot, I actually had some more seedlings that also rotted even when still germinating and I've seen the stunted growth similar to one that I have germinated. My seedlings are currently on their 6 month period and are still suspended in water, the other seedlings were still in very good shape and have grown maybe 5 leaves more than the one rotting seedling I am talking about :< I am actually thinking of finding the mix in our local market which you recommended in hopes that it might save the seedling from complete rot. Thank you for your response! I didn't expect you would answer my inquiry quickly, I really do appreciate it.
I love that everything that seems simple about plants when you're first getting into them is actually way more complex. People who don't know anything are like "water and dirt right" And we're like... "So the acidity of the soil" and "I can't tell you how many days between waterings bc our environment is too different"
Like any field - the more you learn the less you know. The world opens up the longer you look into something and I think that's really beautiful. I'm really loving getting deeper into gardening and caring for plants, there's so much to learn!
Hi Marty, thanks for your comment. In my experience, any less and your tree will die of root rot pretty quickly. Avocados need properly well draining soil; if it’s sitting in water for too long it’s going to die. My mix that I use for trees that are recovering from root rot is made up of 50%+ perlite. The idea being that it dries up quickly, therefore not giving the fungi a chance to establish and eat the roots.

I have several seedlings too grown from a few types of avo seeds like hass, Shepard, gem and feurte. I can’t wait to see what they turn into one day lol if I live that long. But I will be using them for grafting too so that’s why I want the scions 😊
Hi Scott ,
My seed , sprouted in water .
Thanks looks like a good soil mix
The trees love it :) I've had far fewer problems since switching to it!
Can you plant directly into the soil after you get a seed to sprout and it has roots and stem
I just potted mine using your advice
If I use terracotta pots, I would need to repot it frequently as the tree grows. Is alright to have repeated repoting?
My avacado seed split and is showed root and stem growth but it stopped and it still in water but what I can't understand what is happening water become opaque and smell of ammonia I change water daily
I’m so getting myself a moisture meter. Thanks mate that will help a lot. I hate sticking my hands in the dirt due to my health issues I have severe immune issues and have to be careful with potting mixes and compost etc.
I wonder if Bunnings has them 🤔
I got mine from Bunnings! I use it whenever I water anything now - it's probably the best tool I've bought for keeping plants.
Take care when mixing soil - I know it's not easy or super safe for everyone - remember that PPE and look after yourself. Best wishes :)
Been binging your channel !!!
Sounds great! Good luck :)
@@ScottGrowsanAvocadoTree thanks... It has a few crispy leaves but it's looking great on top nice buds starting... I'm enjoying it as a house plant
Can I use gritty mix that's marketed for succulents/cacti?
Oh lol he said you were switching with worm castings later… Same thing
Please tell me what should I doing turning bit brown and bit green
How you recommend peat moss? It’s not sustainable and is banned in many soil products. Do you alternative for that?
In more recent videos I’ve spoken about how I’ve switched to coco coir - a much more sustainable option. 🥥
@@ScottGrowsanAvocadoTree Thank you for the tipp. I probably missed the newer videos
Where do you store your bags of soil, etc? Mine always seem to get buggy, and then I feel like I can’t use it anymore bc I don’t want bugs in my house.
Hiya, happy new year! Have you found a substitute to peat moss?
Happy new year!
Yes! I’m using coconut peat these days - a little more preparation (you need to soak it before using it) but super cheap and much more sustainable. I use it the same way I use peat moss in this video.
@@ScottGrowsanAvocadoTree thank you so much !! I'll try that
Nice tutorial
Thanks for watching :)
Thank you.Cool style too
Good information thanks, just a pity you didn’t show the planting stage because some bury the seed in soil, some get a pre root level for the soil and others leave the top bit of the seed above soil level. So which do you think is right for a healthy avocado conversion from water to soil?
That’s a great question! I detail it as I transplant a seed from water to soil in this video :) th-cam.com/video/7zSIHjcw9ZA/w-d-xo.html
@@ScottGrowsanAvocadoTree Thankyou! Now I can put my beautiful avocado with 6 giant green leaves in soil.
Spraying 3% H2O2 on the soil now and again keeps fungal infection at bay, can the plant deal with that?
I'm looking forward to the video about avocado varieties and how they grow.
So am I!
Interesting! I’ve never grown a avocado from a seed before, maybe I should try! I think I need to be using my moisture meter more. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching, Sarah. I'd love to see you grow an avocado tree!!
The moisture meter is a game changer.
I do have one question. Where did you get your hat?
Hi there, any suggestions for sustainable sources peat moss? Or alternatives?
Would a self watering pit work?
That's a great question, Dawn - I'm going to have to try it out and report back my results. I don't often use self watering pots - I prefer to have water drain and soil dry out more often, but I'll have to give it a try.
Will worm castings retain too much water?
Thank u so much I needed to know this
And you are absolutely gorgeous
Thank you so much!! 🥰
I would've loved to send you a picture but i'm not much of a social media person just TH-cam
we are about to transplant a 2 foot avocado tree, does it need to be grafted> It was started from a store bought avocado seed.
What mix/soil do you recommend when transferring to in ground??
It is still trying to sprout new small leaves from the top but I can see already those tips are browning also 😢
Any ideas? Does it just hate the cold and should I bring it inside through winter?? I am in Perth
It's not easy to get perlite where I live. Can I use sand in place of perlite?
Hey! Yes ☺️ I’ve used sand for many of my trees and it’s done the job
Great. That's the answer I was looking for. Thank you!
Hi Scott, what are the names of the three ingredients that you mixed? And where can I buy them from? Also, where did you buy the water thermometer?
Hi Vanessa! I used Perlite, Peat Moss and Potting Soil. My moisture meter I bought from Bunnings, as well as the other ingredients, but if you don’t have them in your country, they should be found in garden supply shops and nurseries. All the best!!
hi scott, I have an avocado plant that is about 2 years old and it has a really long stem with a few leaves on it and it is getting some new little leaves on it, should I just cut the stem and see if it will grow again, OR HOW CAN i RE-ROOT this plant again ????? thank-you
Hey Debby! I haven't tried propagating an avocado cutting before - I'm sure it's possible though. I'm interested to see how you go!
Hey Rael - I haven’t, but I would imagine it would work very similarly to perlite - I might have to investigate :)
Hi Scott!
Good evening may i know the measurement of vermicast that you use as fertilizer thanx
Hi Scott, my avocado tree leafs have brown spots on them and it’s spreading to many of the leafs. There falling prematurely and the branches are drooping. Please help
Also love your vids! 🥑
Thank you!!
It sounds like root rot 😬 make sure you’re only watering it when it’s dry. Good luck! It’s hard to rescue a tree from root rot once it’s set in but it is doable!
Does this work for a mango cuz i cant finde a mix for mango i saw that mangos nead drainage to .
Zhan .Chen I’m so curious to know how that goes! Please let me know ☺️🥑
Is the Chicago weather OK to grow avocado trees in my garden?
Hi Scott, thank you very much for sharing these great tips and your experience! If I can give you an advice, it's better if you wear a mask when you move dry perlite, its dust can be dangerous ;)
by the way, I'm Italian but I lived in Melbourne for 6 months last year, I left a piece of my heart there ... I really love Australia
I can't find out - how did your purchased avocado tree that you try to save work out?
I made a follow up video here where I go into depth about what happened. 😊 m.th-cam.com/video/Y10QJwjTKVA/w-d-xo.html
hi scott, i just bought a haas and bacon in melbourne, they are about 5 feet tall and going to go into soil, but with lots of info on internet, not sure how to do it, will a raised garden bed of about 600mm height be any good with compost sand and native soil mix?
That sounds good to me! Where'd you buy your trees? I'm still waiting avocados to be ready with the place I usually buy trees.
I see fewer and fewer bees every year 😢😢
Blueberries like acidic soil.
Do you add this mix to avocados planted in ground?
No worries. If your avocado tree fails you surely will still have a career with ZZ Top. Fantastic hair!
Can I use sphagnum moss in my potting mix?
thank you very much ❤️🙌🏾
Can I use cocopeat instead of peat moss
I cut of all my leaves what’s going to happen it’s a year old
I think if you swap out the crappy potting mix with compost it would be even better 👍🏻🤓
Is this a good mixture for citrus too?
I haven’t tried it with citrus! It may do the trick, but I’m not certain.
Dude what do you recommend if growing in clay based soil?
Hey Terry, I’d recommend improving the soil before planting. Adding organic matter (manure, leaf litter, mulch) and digging it in over time will help improve your soil both in nutrition and in drainage. Good luck!
Can avocado plant survive in 47 degree Celsius temperature ??
Hey Gaurav - They'll really struggle. Once it hits 40C, most plants, including avocados, struggle to function effectively (for a number of reasons, including that photosynthesis stops working when the plant is 40C). If they're in the full sun, they'll also really struggle. It's possible that with adequate shading your trees may survive though.
great vid.
@@ScottGrowsanAvocadoTree that is a very good info, but I still doubt that it is already letting it to rot,
I actually had some more seedlings that also rotted even when still germinating and I've seen the stunted growth similar to one that I have germinated. My seedlings are currently on their 6 month period and are still suspended in water, the other seedlings were still in very good shape and have grown maybe 5 leaves more than the one rotting seedling I am talking about :<
I am actually thinking of finding the mix in our local market which you recommended in hopes that it might save the seedling from complete rot. Thank you for your response! I didn't expect you would answer my inquiry quickly, I really do appreciate it.
tip: u can add aloe vera pieces to the base to avoid root rot
I love that everything that seems simple about plants when you're first getting into them is actually way more complex. People who don't know anything are like "water and dirt right"
And we're like... "So the acidity of the soil" and "I can't tell you how many days between waterings bc our environment is too different"
I know it's difficult growing gardens i don't know what i'm doing most of the time.
Like any field - the more you learn the less you know. The world opens up the longer you look into something and I think that's really beautiful. I'm really loving getting deeper into gardening and caring for plants, there's so much to learn!
IT wood be nice no music please, when you are hard of hearing the soft noise in the background throes thing off thanks
Hello
Too much perlite. that is going to dry up too fast.
