    this video is very helpful! I've been growing a bunch of avocado trees (in soil) during quarantine and they will definitely need to be re-potted soon.

    [ clean quick easy way to mix soil ]:
    Just planted my seedling with root ball into a pot, and realized it was TONS easier to mix the soil in a trash bag or large plastic bag that will not leak ( mixed in seconds )
    Toss in portions of each part of the soil you want, then grab two sides of the bag and raise and lower each side alternatingly in order to mix/toss/roll them together. happens in seconds vs adding water to it like in the vid and using a trowel.
    no mess, all contained in the bag, and hands stay clean. jus scoop out portions of the soil mix with a large plastic cup instead of using hands or trowel, into the desired container afterwards.
    Thanks Scott !!!!

    My current situation is cold weather and no window that faces the Sun well 😬 my avocado sprout looks very healthy. It's getting tall and slender which is a sign that it needs more sunlight but it took to transplant very well. I may have to opt for a grow light. It's a Band-Aid when it comes to replacing natural Sun but it's something. My soil mix was a half and half between a proper soil suited for avocado growth and the local dirt since I eventually want it to grow in the ground. I figured the mixture would help acclimate it for less difficulty later. I did the same thing by keeping a little dirt in the bottom of the water jar

    Hi Scott, thanks for sharing. On your moisture meter (assuming 1-10 scale), at what number do you know to water? I've heard that avocados in fast draining soil need to be watered when it's still "moist" at 5-6 on the scale, but the dry scale is from 1-3.

    Thanks for your videos! I just started growing avocado and you help alot. One quick question, would it be best to put some soil into the water jar a couple of weeks before transplanting? just to minimise the transplanting shock. Thanks :D

    So ive had one of my two avocados roots turning brown/black while being in water, but there was still new roots growing out of that brown ones so i tried scrapping that rotten part with a toothpick and it was all good inside so i planted both of my seeds in mix of perlite, soil from my front yard and something called trest here. Should seeds that already started rotting be planted at all? And is the yard soil any good for planting avocados? If you can please make a video on diseases that can happen while growing it in water, cause i got root rot on both of them and some white crystal like stuff growing on other one, but great stuff mate cheers

    Hey! Great video. Have been growing my avocados for 9 months now and transplanted them to pots today. One of them is 10 inches Long and the other is 6. Should I prune them? And should I put them in a shady area(under the trees) or keep them where they are where the sun is 6-9 hours directly on them? Thanks a lot.

    Hey Scott! Your vids are very helpful but I have a questiom my avocado plant has brown root... and I notice that the root is no longer growing larger or spreading out is that a problem?

    • @ScottGrowsanAvocadoTree
      @ScottGrowsanAvocadoTree  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question, Michelle! A brown root- unfortunatly, is most likely dead. If the seed is still alive it'll put out new white ones and all will be well. I discuss this briefly in an upcoming video (early September). Hopefully it puts out some more roots!

      @@ScottGrowsanAvocadoTree Thank you jeez my plant is unhealthy. Luckily my plant is growing an white root. Also I think there this white bumps that form around the plant thats attached to the seed. I'm not sure if its fungus if so its fugus can you exclude some tips in the upcoming video on how to prevent it? I'll be sure to watch it! Thanks for the reply. 😊

    This video is very helpful. But if the water is Not draining through the bottom, what could be my problem? What part soil and what part perlite should I use?

    • @ScottGrowsanAvocadoTree
      @ScottGrowsanAvocadoTree  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I use about a third perlite. On trees that have had some root rot I’ll up that to about half. ☺️

    Hello Scott. Last year I tried 6 avocado from seed, but they all died in the summer at 20" high because of root rot (I watered them every day, not using a draining soil). Now I have 2 new young seedlings in pot thootpicked in the winter, I used more draining soil and watering way less, about once a week when the top soil seems dry. I notice that you use a moisture meter, but more or less how often do you water the pot?

    • @ScottGrowsanAvocadoTree
      @ScottGrowsanAvocadoTree  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Francesco! I do use a moisture meter whenever I water any of my indoor plants, it's just such a helpful tool for avoiding root rot and it wasn't expensive - I highly recommend getting one.
      In the summer, I'll generally water my indoor, potted trees once a week. Now that it's winter in Australia, I'm doing it less, maybe once every week and a half :)
      Good luck!

    I have to wonder why they don't die of root rot with the tooth pick method. They're literally sitting in water.

      Ah, my mumbling Australian accent!! That's slow-release fertiliser. It's broad spectrum, just to get some additional nutrients in the soil over the next few months. I'll fertilise again in a few months time :)

    They actually grow stronger and fuller when you grow them directly in soil the entire time, not from water to soil.

    Your pot is too small.

    • @susancham6025
      @susancham6025 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      No it's not too small. When transplanting a plant whose fragile roots have only been in water, they need to feel cozy in a pot this size 👍🏼
